Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s Daughter Talks “Real Legends & Heroes” In New Film About Her Father’s Struggle Against Apartheid

“The Forgiven” Starring Forest Whitaker & Eric Bana Hits Theaters March 9 Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s daughter said she hopes a new movie about her father’s crusade for reconciliation following Apartheid’s end in South Africa helps shine a light on the real heroes in our everyday lives. “The Forgiven” follows Archbishop Tutu in his work as chairman of then President Nelson Mandela’s “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” just after Apartheid was abolished in the 1990s. Tutu – played by an unrecognizable Forest Whitaker – teams up with a hardened, racist prisoner and former secret policeman (Eric Bana) to solve the murder of a young woman. “What I hope viewers take away from the film is the incredible courage of so many South Africans who are nameless,” Mpho Tutu told BOSSIP. “These were ordinary people who have had an extraordinary generosity of spirit and openness of heart.” She added: “It doesn’t take a a gold star or a recognizable face or a well known name in order to be a hero. Ordinary people perform extraordinary acts of heroism every day.” The movie is filled with lots of those kinds of moments, where South Africans were trying to reconcile with the past, and yet move forward without bitterness. “It’s people who have the generosity to forgive, the courage to hope and the faith to persevere who can make our world a better place, where it can be a place of hope an a better opportunity for tomorrow,” Mpho Tutu said. Mpho Tutu told us that although her family didn’t have any involvement in crafting the script, she said the director Roland Joffé asked Archbishop Tutu for his blessing before they began production. Archbishop Tutu, his daughter said, found the movie to be a “work of art.” “I know that the anti-apartheid struggle feels like it’s in the distant past, but the people who make the state of a new South Africa, are people who are part of our living memory,” she said. “They are our real legends and heroes of today.”

Slay! Black Excellence at the 90th Oscars

It was a historic night in Hollywood when the 90th Academy Awards took place and many of our favorite celebrities showed off their black excellence on the red carpet. Tiffany Haddish took the non traditional route and risked it all on the red carpet in a cream Eritrean gown.  Haddish wore it as a tribute to her father that passed away last year stating, “He said one day I would end up here and if I ever ended up at the Oscars to honor my people so I’m honoring my fellow Eritreans,” Source: VALERIE MACON / Getty Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Chadwick Boseman and Danai Gurira all of Black Panther looked regal at the Oscars.  Lupita looked like the queen of Wakanda in custom atelier Versace.  Voila Davis took our breath in a bright pink Michael Kors gown and Zendaya turned heads in Giambattista Valli Couture. Selena Gomez Gives Justin Bieber a Birthday Shout-Out

Though the newly single Justin Theroux broke his Instagram silence to message Selena, Selena’s giving a shout-out to a very different Justin. Justin Bieber, of course. Thursday was his birthday.  Selena is using her legendary Instagram clout to wish her on-again boyfriend a happy birthday … somewhat cryptically. Yes, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are really back together , despite the hopes of many fans and, apparently, all of Selena’s family that she not repeat past mistakes. But the world is meant to believe that Justin Bieber has totally transformed. That he no longer suffers from alleged substance abuse and addiction that his own management worried would claim his life. That he’ll no longer partake in the terrible, juvenile, and often illegal behavior for which he was so infamous just a few years ago. Apparently, Justin Bieber is way more into his religion these days. Which reportedly has led Selena to feel that God has blessed their reunion . And now, Selena has posted this. That polaroid which is affixed to Selena’s beautiful forehead in this photo is a picture of the Biebs. In case fans somehow missed it, though, Selena Gomez posted this caption. “March 1, 1994 someone I know that happens to be super cool was born. Boom.” Justin Bieber was, of course, born on that date. He is now 24 years old and getting yet another chance at happiness with one of the most talented and exceptional human beings on the planet. We hope that he counted his blessings. And we can’t imagine what he wished for when he blew out his candles — what more could he ask for? Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber recently celebrated Justin’s once-deadbeat father’s wedding with him in Jamaica. Not only were the two practically joined at the hip for this happy occasion, they also spent time joined at the lips. “They were kissing and hugging throughout the morning,” E ! reports about Jelena’s tropical makeout . The details make it all sound very romantic. “He rubbed sunscreen all over her back, and they enjoyed the pool and being outside…” What matters isn’t what fans think of Justin or their reunion, but how Selena feels about all of this. “They looked extremely happy.” Awww, good for them! As for those who accuse Selena of repeating past mistakes, well, E! ‘s insider claims that this is something else. “Everything is so different this time around.” Well, they’ve both lived their lives and grown as individuals since they last broke up. “This time around, Justin is behaving like a gentlemen and showing how much he cares about her.” That’s certainly very nice to hear. We hope that it lasts. “He’s is a lot more open about his feelings towards Selena, which has been a big sign of him maturing.” Awwww! Very different from the guy who couldn’t express his affections unless he was drunk whom Selena describes in her song, “Sober.” Obviously, the renewed closeness of this couple has led to rumors. Some have claimed that Selena Gomez is pregnant with Justin Bieber’s baby — she is not. In the light of Selena’s ongoing struggle with Lupus, a devastating autoimmune disorder that caused her to get a kidney transplant last June and which continues to threaten her life, those rumors are almost cruel. But, bittersweetness aside, this was a wholesome post by Selena. We hope that she and the Biebs enjoyed his 24th birthday. Rihanna to Hassan Jameel: Let’s Make a Baby, Baby!

While there have been some unkind pregnancy rumors about Rihanna in recent months, this beautiful and talented singer and actress might bring some truth to them in the future. You know how she’s landed herself a super handsome boyfriend, Hassan Jameel? She’s reportedly considering the idea of making him her baby daddy. HollywoodLife reports that Rihanna is considering having a child with boyfriend Hassan Jameel. “Rihanna is madly in love with Hassan and she’s starting to plan for a future with him.” The guy’s first and last names together literally mean “handsome handsome” and he lives up to that, so this isn’t much of a surprise. “This is the first guy since Chris (Brown) that’s made her feel this way, like she wants to settle down.” Hopefully, this relationship will be less disastrous and upsetting. Their source continues. This time, they’re talking about how and when Rihanna and Hassan currently see each other. “She and Hassan mostly meet up in Europe, it’s a good midway point for them.” That makes sense. “But now she’s talking about making it her full-time base so she can have even more time with him” We in the US would miss Rihanna, but what makes her happy is what really matters. Apparently, her recent birthday is making her think about settling down. “They are very serious and now that Rihanna has hit the big 3-0 she’s thinking about stuff like marriage and family a lot more.” We can see that. Apparently, like countless fellow Millennials, Rihanna is noticing that she isn’t reaching certain milestones at the ages that she’d imagined. “She always thought she would have kids by this age so that’s on her mind now too.” Sometimes, these thoughts gnaw at you. And then there are all sorts of social pressures. “She and Hassan aren’t rushing into anything, but that is where her head is going. It really seems like she’s met her Prince Charming.” He’s a Saudi businessman and heir to one of the world’s biggest companies.  Those are some princely qualities, for sure. It doesn’t hurt that he’s reportedly warned Chris Brown to stay away from Rihanna. That makes him sound like a knight in shining armor. Apparently, Rihanna is understandably head-over-heels. “This guy has completely swept her off her feet.” That’s so heartwarming to hear! And he’s a definite improvement over a certain scumbag she used to love. “For a long time she worried that she’d never love anyone as much as Chris, but Hassan is showing her it’s possible. Chris will always be her first true love but Hassan has made his own mark.” Hopefully, Chris Brown will one day be but a distant memory. (For the whole world, but especially for Rihanna) “It’s two different kind of loves but equally strong.” This new love, of course, doesn’t seem to be toxic or dangerous. Rihanna just turned 30 in February. While there’s no “right time” to have a baby, and while absolutely no one is obligated to reproduce … many look at her and say that this might be a very good time. But if Rihanna wants to put off having a child for another few years, or a decade, or literally forever, that is totally her choice to make. Rihanna is an amazing talent, and no amount of love for her gives any fan — or anyone else — the right to make that kind of choice for her. View Slideshow: 39 Ridiculously Racy Rihanna Photos

The Bachelorette 2018: Meet the Contenders!

Who… will… it…be?!? This is the question on the minds of all ABC viewers at the moment, as we near the end of Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s Bachelor season, which means we're about to embark on a new Bachelorette season. Will the star of the latter in 2018 be a woman we've met previously on this network? A woman Arie scorned? A fresh face entirely? Scroll down to meet the contenders and then let us know who YOU want to see as The Bachelorette… 1. All About Arie… Sort Of As previously reported, Arie proposes on The Bachelor finale… only to then dump his fiancee for his runner-up. How scandalous! 2. SPOILER ALERT!!!!! Based on The Bachelor spoilers we’ve gathered, Arie will hand his final rose to Becca Kufrin. But will he end up with her? 3. In a Word? No, Arie will dump Becca after just a few weeks, making her our top contender to be The Bachelorette. Makes for a pretty endearing backstory, right? 4. What About Lauren Burnham? She’ll finish second on the finale, according to various reports, but will actually win Arie’s heart in the end… in controversial, possibly cheating fashion. So we can remove her name from The Bachelorette list. 5. Aren’t There Other Possibilities? Absolutely. Tia Booth, for example, finished fourth on Arie’s season, but won over many viewers in the process. 6. And Kendall Long? She was sent packing after a night in the Fantasy Suite with Arie, although she almost giggled when he dumped her. Perhaps because she knew something better was on the way? View Slideshow

Briana DeJesus: Does She Want Guns in Classrooms?

While Jenelle Evans doubles down on guns in the wake of the latest mass shooting, Briana DeJesus is stepping up and sharing some much more sensible views. In particular, she’s trashing the idea of arming teachers, and targeting the Florida legislature’s move to do so in particular. In a world where the President is a reality star, it’s not so surprising to hear a Teen Mom 2 star making some salient points about public policy. On February 14th, a tragic and terrible shooting at a Florida high school left 17 dead. The survivors have become a rallying point for common sense gun control legislation. Noting a failure of government leadership, a number of major businesses — starting with Dick’s Sporting Goods — have announced that they’re enacting their own measures. In the mean time, Trump has suggested arming teachers with guns, an idea that’s been widely lampooned online. And the Florida legislature, to the surprise of no one familiar with the exploits of Florida Man and Florida Woman , decided to pour $67 million into a plan to arm teachers throughout the state. Briana DeJesus took to Twitter to speak out: “Stupidest thing ever to give teachers guns … what is the point of safety patrols on campuses then??” She’s referring to school resource officers — police who spend time working security on campuses as a measure that people hope will keep students safer. Briana DeJesus gets very real about the role that racism plays in schools and in countless shootings. “I have a child of color and knowing 10 teachers in her school will carry a gun terrifies me.” With guns everyone, it just takes one racist person on one bad day to end a child’s life. “As a parent I know I won’t be able to protect my kids every second go the day. And I would want their teachers to love and protect like I would.” But Briana lives in real life, not in fantasy land where everyone’s a trained marksman. (Though we should note that many combat veterans have spoken out about how dangerous arming teachers could be) “But giving teachers guns just isn’t right and spending 67 [million dollars] is crazy.” The amount that the legislature was willing to conjure up out of nowhere is a sticking point for many people. “They won’t ever spend 67 million on education but for guns … it’s okay?” Someone challenged her, suggesting that arming teachers — who are not trained to be armed guards and are not paid to be armed guards — would be a great way to protect students. “I’m all for protecting kids but there’s no reason to give TEACHERS guns.” She’s already addressed the expense and the fact that not all teachers would be safe with a gun. But she clearly doesn’t want to argue. “But whatever. Let’s see how this plays out. I hope for the best!” Trump, of course, announced his “policy proposal” just as he announces his other bad ideas — with his little orange thumbs. “What I said was to look at the possibility of giving concealed guns to gun adept teachers with military or special training experience — only the best.” His version of “best” is famously laughable — just look at the turnaround in the White House. “20% of teachers, a lot, would now be able to.” Trump then makes some weird sports analogies that perhaps golf players will understand. A real man of the people. “I want highly trained people that have a natural talent, like hitting a baseball, or hitting a golf ball, or putting. How come some people always make the four-footer and some people under pressure can’t even take their club back, right? They can’t even take their club back.” He seemed to lose himself on a sports tangent. Briana did not mention that even highly trained marksmen are considered to be doing “very well” if they have 40% weapon accuracy in live fire simulations. So even if teachers are having a shootout with some gunman, where are the other 60% of the bullets going? Some of them are going into students. Of course, Trump said that he wanted to take away guns, and then pivoted because he doesn’t actually know what he’s saying at any given time. He now plans to meet with video game executives, because surely those violent video games are to blame, even though Canada and the UK and Australia all play the exact same games without the shootings. Briana didn’t get into all of that. That’s okay — she’s a reality star, not a politician. But even she knows that children don’t need to be around guns. Which is more than we can say for certain people. View Slideshow: Jenelle Evans Lets Toddler Play With Gun in All-Time Low; Could She Lose ALL Her Kids?!

‘How To Get Away With Scandal’ Recap: The AnnOlivia Voltron Is Women’s History Month Goals

Follow this link:

Source: Frederick M. Brown / Getty Olivia Pope and Annalise Keating are respectively revered and despised so it was only a matter of time that they meet and we’re so glad that this day has finally come! SHOOK! Tonight’s TGIT crossover event is How to Get Away With Scandal , and it’s everything we needed our Thursday night TV session to be, especially as our lit Black History Month ends and gives way to Women’s History Month. via GIPHY The first portion of the show is the Scandal hour. We pick back up at Olivia’s lecture. She is moonlighting as a professor since her people in Washington DC are done with her, and the lecture is about How to Survive a Scandal . Her students aren’t doing so well answering her questions, but Annalise fills in the gaps where they lack and Olivia is impressed. Annalise shoots her shot at the end of the lecture. Olivia is not interested in taking the case at first, citing that she knows about Annalise is a hot mess and wishes her luck with the case. Annalise urges her to look the case over and think about it, and we all know what will happen. Olivia has been trash the past few episodes, but we know she’s about social justice too. She talks it over with Marcus and he obviously gives her the push she needs to move past Annalise’s past and give the case a shot. You already know how he feels about black and brown people in numbers at disproportionate rates. Prison reform for the win! Olivia informs Annalise that she’s taking the case on, but she has to play by her rules now that she’s in DC. The problem is, Olivia is not on good terms with Mellie, who can get the case seen by the supreme court without a problem. Olivia tries her luck with Fitz because you know his post-presidency work with the Fitzgerald Institute is about prison reform. He’s cold and distant, rightfully so. But Liv humbles herself and explains what she’s doing, and he gives her a much-needed pep talk and gets them a meeting with Mellie. Now its Annalise, Olivia, Fitz, Michaela and Marcus meeting at the oval office. It’s cute to see Annalise’s excitement to be at the White House for the first time, but of course, she gets down to business. Unfortunately, Mellie decides to pass on the case because it would be a headache to pass it to the Supreme Court. It’s a huge case, judges resigning, there’s politics involved, and ain’t nobody willing to make time for that. Liv speaks to Mellie privately and asks her if she’s doing this just to spite her. Mellie says that she’s not shutting it down completely, but she wants to hold off for now. Liv accepts the challenge and tells her she’s going to get this case to the supreme court with or without her. Mellie tells her that she only took the meeting as a favor to Fitz and, if she does go around her then Liv will find herself an adversary of the White House vs. her current standing, which is that the public still views her favorable because they don’t know all that she did. Liv reminds her that this wouldn’t be her first time at the rodeo. Game on. And it is going to be a major battle. via GIPHY First, Jake gets Quinn to urge the gladiators to find dirt that can discredit judges and keep the case out of the Supreme Court by blackmail. Meanwhile, Annalise expresses disappointment in Liv. But instead of just owning up to her mistakes, Liv makes Annalise think that Mellie isn’t sold on the case because of her past. This is the start of their frenemy tension and they continue to bump heads as they reconvene and figure out the next steps, and you know they both have sharp tongues. Michaela and Marcus are the only ones keeping them kind of level-headed for now. At some point, Annalise asks Olivia where she can get her hair done and they end up at the beauty where they’re bonding at first, but their #BlackGirlJoy is stolen swiftly by a news story about how “sources” are saying that Olivia is only taking the case as a vendetta against Mellie because contrary to popular belief, she didn’t leave the White House on Good terms. This item is obviously a plant by the ops and the jig is up for Olivia. Liv asks the stylists to leave so they can talk and it gets ugly again. Annalise reads Olivia for filth for judging her and for thinking she’s better than her (since she grew up privileged), and says she’s no different than the racist white people she has to deal with in the courtroom. Then Liv gets her turn to berate Annalise. She calls her pathetic and broke. Lordt. Basically, they’re frenemies again and this is kind of serving jigaboos vs. wannabes from School Daze . Olivia visits Quinn and tries to talk sense into her because Quinn really does what justice for people. Olivia reminds her that it’s important that she put her negative feelings toward her aside. Quinn plays hardball, but you know she’ll come around. And through all of this, Olivia feels defeated, but it’s Fitz who talks her off the ledge and reminds her who she used to be, who she still is at her core. via GIPHY Then Charlie gives Quinn dirt on Spivey, one of the Supreme Court judges, but hold that thought. Olivia’s next line of offense is a media tour. She has been appearing on various outlets with Annalise to talk about the case and she admits in an interview that she was fired by Mellie Grant without admitting that she’s a criminal. The admission is part of Olivia’s philosophy, which Annalise reminded her of, that the truth can be your greatest weapon. And it is. Unfortunately for them, Marcus delivers the news that Spivey won’t hear the case. Olivia apologizes Annalise but keeps up the good fight and luckily for her, Quinn is thinking about the 90 inmates who didn’t get a fair trial. She shows up at Olivia’s place and hands her an envelope. The envelope contains the dirt. Basically, Spivey’s son killed someone in a hit and run years ago and Spivey paid off the witness to not speak about it. This means that the White House can control him with this secret. However, the witness Spivey paid off died two years ago so there’s still a chance to salvage this. Olivia pays him a visit, hands him the envelope, and encourages him to do the right thing. She’s not even trying to blackmail him here but she urges him to think about how he would feel if his son would have gone to trial. He would have wanted him to get the best representation. Those 90 people deserved that too. Victory! The Supreme Court got the case on the docket. Now that Olivia got Annalise what she wanted, they could part ways but they lowkey like each other and decide that they want to keep working on this together. via GIPHY And then we get into the How to Get Away With Murder portion of this. Annalise’s kids are headed to DC because they’re obviously super excited about this. Olivia and Annalise are hard at work on the case because they fight to win but there’s always a hater lurking in the shadows fighting harder. In this case, that would be Ingrid Egan, the opposing lawyer. She has been doing interviews talking reckless about Annalise and Olivia. She brings up their shady reputations and claims that they’re doing this case as a distraction, but it only ends up working in their favor and they even get offers of help from lawyers from the ACLU. Annalise denies the help, but Liv points out that if she loses this case it will set criminal justice reform back decades. Duh! And it’s important to mention that Nate’s father is the face of the case so he’s going to DC. Pressure. Lots and lots of pressure. via GIPHY Back in Philly, Frank tells Bonnie that Laurel’s mom told him that she paid Wes $100K to stay away from Laurel and he took the money. But, Frank says he can’t find electronic proof of the money. Hold that thought. Michaela and Marcus finally end up getting it on. The chemistry between them has been undeniable, and at the trial, Connor, Oliver, and Laurel pick up on it and question her about what she did. She tells the truth but begs them not to tell Asher because it will destroy him. Connor can’t promise that he won’t because he’s feeling salty that Michaela took this case from her. Plus, all these people are messy so it’s going to come out at some point, but this ain’t the episode for that. via GIPHY Annalise then gets a call from a blocked number. It’s Jacqueline (Isaac’s wife). It turns out that he overdosed, but he’s not dead, but his kidneys are failing and Jacqueline blames Annalise. Jacqueline tells Annalise that she ruined him just like she ruins everyone on her life and that is a major trigger. This is why we don’t answer blocked numbers. via GIPHY Annalise is in the bathroom crying and freaked but Olivia gives her a Pope-style pep talk and gets her back in the game. Annalise gets down to business in the courtroom but the judges play hardball and aren’t feeling Nate’s father as the face of the case. As far as one judge, in particular, is concerned, Nate’s pops is just a criminal and not a victim. And then the judge gets really annoyed when Annalise says that race is a factor in this case. Statistics show that black and brown people are policed heavier and receive longer sentences for the same crimes as their white counterparts. When Annalise’s facts don’t work and the judge is close to dismissing her, Annalise asks for a break so that she can get herself together, and has Michaela research a specific case. It turns out that the case was a case based on race tried by the judge who was antagonizing her. Basically, his words in that particular case is that race can be an issue in certain legal situations because the legal system was not built in favor of certain people. Annalise uses these words against the judge, who even forgot that those were his words, and things start to look up as the other justices challenge him. Everyone on Annalise’s team, including Olivia looks proud. Back in Philly, we discover that Frank went digging to find the cash and finds a hard drive instead. It contains audio of a convo between Wes and Laurel’s mom that proves Laurel’s mom is lying to her. Finally, Olivia tells Annalise that she got a call from President Grant who says that the case might swing in their favor. Annalise says she’ll believe it when she sees it in writing and they part ways, but we all hope they keep in touch because they ended up bringing out the best in each other once they got through all the BS. But the bad news is also not far behind. Annalise gets another call, and it’s from Bonnie. Simon is awake. They all better pray that he has amnesia. See you next week!
