Is Britney Spears Still An Underdog?

As ‘Hold It Against Me’ tops charts, is this the year she drops the label? By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Britney Spears Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Despite selling out stadiums and having her singles, including her newest one, “Hold It Against Me,” shoot to the top of the charts , Britney Spears always seems to have an air of underdog about her. After rising to the top of the pop ranks, Spears suffered some personal setbacks that she can’t seem to shake even in the wake of professional triumph. So, is 2011 the year Spears finally loses the stigma? MTV News asked a few experts to weigh in. Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton compared the Britney of today to the Britney of her pop heyday in the early part of the millennium. “I think Britney is still an underdog in comparison to her former self,” he said. The last big sit-down interview Spears did was in 2008 for her documentary “For the Record.” And aside from smaller magazine write-ups, Spears has managed to stay out of the usual rounds of doing press, an aspect of her public persona that may contribute to the idea that she is an underdog. “Britney’s been an underdog for, like, four years. There’s gonna come a point where we’re gonna have to stop considering her an underdog,” MTV News’ Jim Cantiello said. “I still think people do. She’s recluse for all intents and purposes. I mean, she doesn’t do any press, so I think as long as that mystery surrounds her, people will think of her as an underdog.” But, Entertainment Weekly ‘s Leah Greenblatt notes that being somewhat of a recluse does not make Spears a pop underdog. “I don’t know if she’ll ever be an underdog on the pop charts,” Greenblatt said. “No matter what goes on with her personally … if she brings them something and it’s good enough, people take it and put it at the top of the Billboard chart.” Do you consider Britney Spears an underdog? Britney Spears’ Pop Rivalries, From Christina Aguilera To Lady Gaga

‘She’s sort of left a lot of these girls in the dust,’ one Spears expert tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images For more than a decade, Britney Spears has been pitted against some of her pop peers, including Madonna, Jessica Simpson, Christian Aguilera and, most recently, Lady Gaga . She’s publicly buried the hatchet with Madonna and Aguilera — sharing a three-way kiss with the pair at the 2003 VMAs — and never really paid much attention to the hype of other so-called rivalries. “Since the beginning of her career, she’s always been pitted against whatever big pop person there is,” MTV News’ Jim Cantiello explained. “I feel like artists have had rivalries with Britney and she hasn’t really had rivalries with them,” Entertainment Weekly ‘s Leah Greenblatt added. “She’s sort of left a lot of these girls in the dust.” While Brit has managed to stay on top all these years, a new pop princess might give her a run for her money. “I think Gaga’s already been talking about what she is gonna do. She has said that her album is going to be more than just dance songs, and I’m guessing that Britney might be making a different type of album, which is great, because in that sense, Brit and Gaga don’t have to compete,” Perez Hilton said of any potential new rivalry. “They’re each doing their own very distinct thing.” Greenblatt agreed: “It just seems like they’re operating on different wavelengths right now. I mean, Britney’s proven herself over such a longer period of time than Gaga has. I don’t think that Gaga can just wipe her off the pop royalty board.” At the end of the day, it’s not at all about competition, Cantiello explained. “Britney’s going in the super dance route and Gaga’s doing a super personal album,” he said. “It comes a point where we’ve got to stop comparing the two.” Plus, it’s hard for these two to really ever compete with one another, since Gaga has admitted to waving the Britney flag . “I was 13 when Britney became a star,” she said in 2009. “I was amazed by the level of the superfan that Britney created. I want to bring back the feeling that I used to feel.” Who has been Britney’s worthiest adversary? Share your thoughts in the comments! Paramore’s Ups And Downs: A Timeline

First taste of possible drama came when the group canceled a European tour back in 2008. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by James Montgomery Paramore in 2007 Photo: Soul Brother/ FilmMagic The rock world received jarring news just before the end of 2010 when band co-founders (and brothers) Josh and Zac Farro announced they were leaving Paramore behind. Since then, the brothers issued a scathing statement about why they exited the group, and the remaining three members — singer Hayley Williams, bassist Jeremy Davis and guitarist Taylor York — sat down for an extra-long interview with MTV News to lay out their side of the story and react to the Farros’ statements. (You can watch that entire conversation as “Paramore: The Last Word” right now.) But how did the band get to the point of breaking up? There has always been upheaval with the lineup (no fewer than eight people have been a part of the band since its inception), but the first taste of possible drama came when the group abruptly canceled a European tour at the beginning of 2008, citing “a lot of internal issues.” Rumors flew about what those particular issues were (there was even speculation that Williams was pregnant), but the band remained closely guarded as to why they specifically backed out of the tour. It appeared as though the time off did them some good, as they managed to finish 2008 strong, touring the United States and playing the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards . When it finally came time to record a new album, the group addressed many of their internal issues head-on in the songs that make up Brand New Eyes, their most mature release to date. The group admitted that many of the songs on the album directly dealt with the turmoil they had experienced the year prior. “There’s a lot of calling out and pointing the finger, but then it starts to change,” Williams said at the time of Brand New Eyes ‘ release. “We’ve gone through these things, we’ve worked out most of our issues, and it’s much more positive and hopeful.” Their star continued to rise, though Williams began to experience success outside of the realm of Paramore. Just before the release of Brand New Eyes, her first ever solo track, “Teenagers,” appeared on the soundtrack to the horror movie “Jennifer’s Body.” And in early 2010, “Airplanes,” a collaboration with Atlanta rapper B.o.B from his album The Adventures of Bobby Ray, became a gigantic hit. Still, the band kept on trucking, headlining sold-out concerts all around the world and producing eye-popping videos for the singles from Brand New Eyes. As their tour wound down in December, the group was ready to move on to the next project. “We’re doing a tour of South America, and then we’re taking time off to write a new record,” York told MTV News. “We’re at the end of this record, and it’s bittersweet.” A few days later, rumors started to swirl that the Farros would be exiting, which led to both the band’s statement and the Farros’ reaction. The remaining members of Paramore have committed to continuing on as a unit, and no matter what the future holds, they are already experts in handling upheaval. Single will premiere at midnight Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Cover art for Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive Want to know what time you’ll be able to hear Britney Spears’ final cut of “Hold It Against Me” ? Well, according to a press release from her label, Jive Records, the song will hit radio and iTunes at midnight ET on Tuesday, days after a demo version of the club tune leaked online. The song will remain an iTunes exclusive purchase for a week, until January 18. “Hold It Against Me,” produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin, is the lead single from Brit’s highly anticipated, yet-untitled March release . “Heard an early demo of my new single leaked. If u think that’s good, wait til you hear the real one Tuesday,” the pop star tweeted . “With her vocals on that, it’s going to be an undeniable, surefire hit,” Perez Hilton told MTV News about the demo, which features vocals from songwriter Bonnie McKee. “I loved it. My own critique is that the demo sounds a little too much like Ke$ha. I hope that the finished song feels like a Britney song. Besides that, it’s still to me a hit song.” Luke admitted that the track that has everyone talking already will really have fans hyped once the final version drops. “That version of hold it against me is really really old,” he shared. “It don’t sound like that anymore… it’s WAY better.” The “Hold It Against Me” leak is the latest in a long history of leaked Britney songs . In the past, other Spears lead singles like “Womanizer” (off 2008’s Circus ) and “Gimme More” (off 2007’s Blackout ) also hit the Net early, only gaining the singer more buzz for those releases. Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Demo Lyrics

The single is set for official release on Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena over art for Britney Spears’ single “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive Britney is almost back! Fans are super excited over a leaked demo version of Spears’ news single, “Hold It Against Me,” set for official release on Tuesday. While the vocals on the demo come courtesy of songwriter Bonnie McKee, Ryan Seacrest and Perez Hilton have assured us that the final cut of the song is bound to be a hit. Here are the lyrics to the demo, which may have changed in the final version, which was produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Hey, over there Please forgive me If I’m coming on too strong. Hate to stare But you’re winning And they’re playing my favorite song. So come ‘ere, little closer Wanna whisper in your ear. Say it clear, little question Wanna note how you just feel. If I feel my heart was beating loud, If we could escape the crowd some how, If I said I want your body now, Would you hold it against me? ‘Cause you feel like paradise And I need a vacation tonight. So if I said I want your body now, Would you hold it against me? Hey, you might think That I’m crazy, But I think you’re just my type. I may be little hazy, But you just cannot deny There’s a spark in between us. When we’re dancin’ on the floor I want more, wanna see it, So I’m askin’ you tonight If I feel my heart was beating loud, If we could escape the crowd some how, If I said I want your body now, Would you hold it against me? ‘Cause you feel like paradise And I need a vacation tonight. So if I said I want your body now, Would you hold it against me? What do you think of the lyrics? Tell us in the comments! Britney Spears’ New Single Is A ‘Surefire Hit,’ Perez Hilton Says

Ryan Seacrest, who has heard the final cut of ‘Hold It Against Me,’ also gives the tune his seal of approval. By Jocelyn Vena Perez Hilton Photo: Frazer Harrison/ WireImage The demo for Britney Spears’ new single, “Hold It Against Me,” that hit the Web on Thursday is catching people’s attention, and it seems clear that the pop star wants everyone to hit the dance floor and party. The unfinished track, which feature the vocals of songwriter Bonnie McKee rather than Brit herself, is a dirty, grinding club banger with pulsing beats and lustful lyrics. The track already has the media talking. “With her vocals on that it’s going to be an undeniable, surefire hit,” Perez Hilton told MTV News . “I loved it. My own critique is that the demo sounds a little too much like Ke$ha. I hope that the finished song feels like a Britney song. Beside that it’s still to me a hit song.” Perez’s Ke$ha comparison likely can be attributed to the work of Dr. Luke. And the gossip guru’s further evaluation of the tune draws parallels to another Luke production. “It’s not inspired. It’s not groundbreaking,” Perez explains, noting that this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially considering he’s only heard the demo. “It’s like Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’; I think this is the equivalent.” Perez isn’t the only one giving “Hold It Against Me” his seal of approval. Ryan Seacrest revealed that Britney’s managers, Larry Rudolf and Adam Leber, played him the finished version of the track , and he insisted that if fans are stoked about the demo, then they should just be over the moon about the final cut. “@BritneySpears just sent me ‘Hold It Against Me.’ WOW. The demo doesn’t even compare!” he wrote on Twitter . Seacrest added that Britney’s video for the tune is set to shoot in two weeks, after a month of rehearsals, noting that it’s “gonna be major.” He also reported that Rudolf and Leber played him another track off the singer’s March release, “I I I Wanna Go,” but gave little details about the song besides describing it as a “powerhouse single.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Britney Spears Related Artists Britney Spears

Britney Spears Vs. Lady Gaga: Perez Hilton Weighs In

‘It’s gonna be a very competitive year for females in music, and that’s exciting,’ celeb blogger explains. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Lady Gaga and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images Fans are responding with fervor to the great pop battle of 2011. Who will come out on top when Lady Gaga and Britney Spears release new music this year? Well, it seems that Perez Hilton has a feeling that both ladies will be wildly successful. And he also pointed out that there are a few other horses in this race. “The gays will be very happy. I think it’s going to be super exciting and competitive, especially because Ke$ha’s still going to be around and Katy Perry’s still around,” he told MTV News. “It’s gonna be a very competitive year for females in music, and that’s exciting.” If we’re putting Gaga and Brit head to head, who would Perez place his bet on? “When the dust settles, I definitely think that Lady Gaga will win in this battle just because I know personally that Gaga is so hungry and determined to make this album successful that she’s going to work so hard,” he said. “Whereas Britney and her camp think she doesn’t have to work as hard. It will be successful, but I don’t think it will be as successful as Gaga’s.” He may give it to Gaga in the end, but he noted that Britney does have a leg up — initially, at least. “Britney Spears has an advantage coming out first, because if Gaga would have come out first, that would have hurt Britney,” he explained. “But Britney can have her moment to shine, and I look forward to hearing [her single].” Do you agree with Perez? Celebrity of the Year Finalist #3: Miley Cyrus!

With 2010 drawing to a close, it is with much pride that THG unveils its 10 finalists for its prestigious, Fourth Annual Celebrity of the Year award. These stars all gave us their best, their worst, their nude pics (sometimes) and their scandals (often). This month, THG honors that greatness. After the Jersey Shore cast fist-pumped its way to #4 , we present one of our most polarizing figures at #3 … Miley Cyrus! Perhaps more than any celebrity we cover, 2010 was a year of ups and downs for Miley, lows and highs ( literally! ). It began with the official announcement that Cyrus would be saying farewell to the role of Hannah Montana, and it ended with a bong-smoking controversy that epitomized the lengths this star had gone to over the past 12 months to prove she was transforming into an adult artist. In between, Miley… … dated Liam Hemsworth multiple times. … sang a duet with Bret Michaels. … hosted the 2010 MuchMusic Video Awards. … got slammed by critics for her portrayal in The Last Song. … made out with a female dancer to prove her maturity. … feuded with Perez Hilton over that blogger being an idiot . … rarely wore pants. … suffered through her parents’ divorce. … turned 18. As you can tell, it was a year of starring roles and scandalous actions for Miley Cyrus. Ardent supporters stuck by her side, arguing that she was simply growing up as a person and a celebrity. Critics, meanwhile, crushed the star for her misguided decisions, coming down on her for abandoning a young fan base and trying too hard to prove she was evolving. Where do you stand? It’s a question we’ve asked often and will likely continue to do so. This divisiveness is a significant reasons why Miley had such an impact on pop culture in 2010.
