Ted Nugent Scratched from Concert, Forced to Pay Bear-Killing Fine

Ted Nugent may not be facing any legal repercussions for comments made last week about Barack Obama, but the musician is still dealing with the fallout. The veteran rocker’s appearance at a July 23 concert in honor of the U.S. military – to be held at Fort Knox in Kentucky and co-headlined by REO Speedwagon and Styx – has been canceled. “After learning of opening act Ted Nugent’s recent public comments about the president of the United States , Ft. Knox leadership decided to cancel his performance,” read a post made on the U.S. Army’s Ft. Knox Facebook page. Elsewhere, Nugent has agreed to pay a $10,000, serve probation and record a PSA as part of a plea bargain in relation to a May 2009 incident in which he illegally killed a black bear in Alaska as part of his Outdoor Channel TV show Spirit of the Wild . In court documents, Nugent says he killed the animal in question – via bow and arrow – days after wounding another bear in the state; according to Alaska hunting laws, a hunter is only permitted to bag one bear per season. But back to the canceled concert appearance: Do you think the organizers should have barred Nugent from participating?

Tupac Coachella Hologram Continues To Spur Debate

MTV News staff argue for and against the ‘Pac-O-Gram on Wednesday’s ‘RapFix Live.’ By MTV News Staff, with reporting by Sway Calloway Tupac’s hologram at Coachella Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Not everyone is a ‘Pac-O-Gram fan. When late rap legend Tupac Shakur was resurrected Sunday night on the Coachella stage as a hologram, music lovers everywhere took notice. Most applauded the effort, but there were those who felt uneasy watching a reimagined Tupac prance across the stage. MTV News senior writer James Montgomery was quite skeptical of the whole display. “Who wouldn’t want to see Tupac or anyone on a tour? But just for me there were some things about it that kind of bothered me,” he said when he appeared on Wednesday’s “It didn’t seem really right to me.” From the beginning of the performance, Montgomery was rubbed the wrong way. “What the f— is up, Coachella,” the optically enhanced Tupac image screamed before “Hail Mary” played from the stage speakers. “Tupac died in 1996 and Coachella didn’t start until 1999, which means that someone basically had to record that dialogue for him, which is kind of troubling,” he said. “It’s basically putting words in the deceased’s mouth.” Rob Markman, senior hip-hop writer for MTV News, has the opposing view. He believes that the projected image of ‘Pac onstage isn’t much different from the big-screen video montages that rappers have used to honor Shakur and other fallen rappers like the Notorious B.I.G. and Big Pun during their own concerts. From Buzzworthy: ” In addition to the artistic possibilities, the business prospects are also sure to be appealing to some. “It raises these weird questions about artist legacy,” Montgomery said. “How long until you see every casino in Vegas get Elvis or Billie Holiday and they have these sort of quote, unquote live shows of these people?” “RapFix Live” host Sway Calloway noted that no matter which side of the debate you fall on, quality is the most important aspect of it — and the general consensus is that the Tupac hologram was done well. “Dr. Dre sanctioned it, Afeni Shakur OK’d it,” he said, referring to Tupac’s mother and onetime producer. “Bottom line: If it was poorly done and it was wack, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion.” Related Videos DJ Khaled And Juvenile Take Over ‘RapFix Live’ Related Photos Tupac’s Hologram At Coachella Related Artists Tupac

Alice Eve Offers Hint To Her ‘Star Trek 2’ Role

‘The Raven’ actress reveals to MTV News she spends ‘a healthy amount of time in the makeup chair — though not as long as Spock.’ By Kara Warner Alice Eve Photo: MTV News Much like the lock and key that all “Star Trek” plot details were kept under during filming the first time around, the same goes for the untitled “Trek” sequel . We know which key players are back in place, alongside new additions Benedict Cumberbatch, as the unidentified villain , and actress Alice Eve, but we don’t know exactly how the sequel’s story will unfold. When MTV News caught up with Eve recently during the press day for her upcoming period thriller “The Raven,” we attempted to find out a few more details about what character she might be playing in asking how long she spends in the makeup chair each day before filming. “I’m a healthy amount of time in the makeup chair — though not as long as Spock,” Eve revealed. “We were filming until very late last night, and I know that’s all I can say. It’s a top-secret operation; it’s like a war.” Although Eve is new to the “Trek” family, two of her co-stars are very familiar faces, Cumberbatch and Simon Pegg, with whom Eve worked on “Starter for 10” and “Big Nothing,” respectively. When asked how the reunion has been, Eve broke out into a wide grin, saying, “Both of them I’ve worked with before, and it’s a true, true pleasure to see them again. Really fun.” Eve went on to tease that her fans will be surprised by “a few things” about her performance in the film and re-emphasized the fact that she’s having a blast on set. “I’m having a lot of fun, and it’s a very special experience to be on J.J.’s [Abrams] movies,” she said. “He’s a real good leader.” The British beauty has equated the atmosphere on set with going to camp or school. “When there’s a group of people who you can spend time with and work with and get to know, a real good experience, it’s kind of like going back to university or something, when everyone has got the same objective,” Eve told MTV News . “There’s a lot of energy, and it’s a nice thing to be a part of that group. That’s the thing that excites me most about it. Obviously, there is a huge legacy there with ‘Star Trek’ and the fanatics, so hopefully they’ll be satisfied.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Star Trek 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘American Idol’ Top Seven Rock Songs Of Today

Joshua Ledet gets a standing O and Elise Testone is declared ‘back’ on Wednesday’s show featuring music from this decade. By Gil Kaufman Elise Testone on “American Idol” Photo: Fox They may have been dressed like they were going to a prom in the 1980s, but the top seven finalists on “American Idol” finally dragged themselves into the present on Wednesday (April 11) for the “Songs From This Decade” theme night. With a playlist of tunes released between 2010 and this year, they had help from guest mentor Akon on a night that featured hits by everyone from Eminem to Pink, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5. After crushing it last week and cementing her status as a front-runner, country girl Skylar Laine played some small ball with the lesser-known Kellie Pickler tune “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You.” Akon was blown away, saying he couldn’t stop thinking about Laine’s voice, which was a good sign. On a stage dressed up with flaming hobo barrel fires, Laine busted out her acoustic guitar and turned an obscure tune into another twangy tour-de-force, raising her gritty vocals skyward to match the bursts of pyro from the stage props. “This is what you should do, you could have a hit with a song like that,” said Randy Jackson, who dubbed it “crazy hot and crazy good,” not to mention pitch perfect. Steven Tyler offered up one of his all-time head-scratching compliments, praising the ladies of season 11 as only he can with the line, “the crows may crow, but the hens deliver the goods.” Right, what he said. Jimmy Iovine said Colton Dixon needed to step out of Phillip Phillips’ shadow, so he encouraged the Tennessee titan to up the ante on the song co-written for Eminem by Skylar Grey, “Love the Way You Lie.” Posting up behind a white grand piano and accompanied by a string section, Colton hit his falsetto repeatedly to up the drama. And while the big note in the middle was impressive, the soft rock arrangement came off as a bit, well, limp. As usual, though, the ladies loved it and Jennifer Lopez was again impressed with how Colton coaxed his own unique notes out the tune, which she wished would have been “more of a song.” Tyler thought it was so flawless that it could go out as a single right now, with no overdubs. At first, low-key pawn shop worker Phillips didn’t impress Akon and Jimmy with his attempt to do something a “bit different” with a strummy, DMB-ified cover of Maroon 5’s “Give a Little More.” Saxophone assist or not, Phillips managed to turn the pop tune into another one of his signature scatty, fratty jam rockers. Despite the sameness of nearly all his performances, Steven praised Phil’s melodic evolution on the show, inexplicably comparing the singer to a mix of late tough-guy actor Steve McQueen and country icon Johnny Cash. “It was a little bit underwhelming,” said Lopez, still yearning to hear Phil Squared break out and do something different. Jimmy drew a blank on “Stuttering,” the Jazmine Sullivan tune chosen by California girl Jessica Sanchez. But he and Akon were blown away by the teen’s power and control, which ‘Kon — who predicted she’d go far before the live shows started — dubbed “crazy.” Her confidence paid off, as Sanchez killed the sultry ballad, showing shades of everyone from Alicia Keys to Jennifer Hudson in a controlled, silky smooth performance that mixed elements of jazz, soul and timeless R&B. Randy loved the arrangement and said BeBe Chez set the bar at the “highest degree.” Lopez could feel Sanchez digging into the story behind the song in the middle and said the high schooler had a chance to take the “Idol” audience on a ride they’ve never been on before as next month’s finale approaches. Joshua “Mantasia” Ledet got a 20th birthday shout-out from season 3 “Idol” winner Fantasia and celebrated being almost legal by exiting the ballad barrio and rocking it out to Bruno Mars’ “Runaway Baby.” Rolling his hips, strutting his stuff and showing off some previously hidden ladies’-man moves, Ledet proved that he’s got just as much soul and grit singing uptempo as he does on the slow jams. Cleary it worked, since he got the night’s first standing O from the judges, with Tyler gushing, “you can sell us all like a work of art.” Jackson said the performance was, simply, “unbelievable,” from the fly white jacket and pink socks to the utter command of the stage. It was do-or-die week for bottom three staple Texas firecracker Hollie Cavanagh, who hoped to turn things around with Pink’s “Perfect.” Akon and Jimmy said she has the vocals, but just needs to cross the chasm from an amateur to a confident professional. Singing to an acoustic guitar, Cavanagh finally combined her powerful pipes with some controlled, heart-tugging emotion, ending with a gigantic diva-rific note that slammed an exclamation mark on the performance. “I feel you fighting. … You sang beautifully tonight,” said Lopez, though Tyler rebutted that it wasn’t, in fact, perfect, but a bit flat. Resident rocker Elise Testone closed the night with the Lady Gaga tune “Yo

DeAndre Brackensick: ‘Idol’ Viewers Love Or Hate My Voice

‘Back in the day, everybody was a falsetto singer; it’s just so unappreciated now,’ latest castoff tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino DeAndre Brackensick Photo: MTV News On Thursday night, “American Idol” bid adieu to its most follicly accomplished contestant, DeAndre Brackensick (no offense, Colton), who was given the boot following his performance of DeBarge’s “I Like It.” After his exit, Brackensick spoke to MTV News , expressing “no regrets” about anything he did during his run on “Idol” and remaining adamant that his falsetto — which somewhat mystified mentor Jimmy Iovine — wasn’t the reason for his departure. “Everyone has their opinion; my voice is one of the voices where either you love it or you can’t stand it, and I think Jimmy didn’t really have a feel for my voice,” he said. “But it’s fine, because I take everything he does say to me to heart, and I try to put it toward the next performance. I have much love for Jimmy.” And in keeping with both the “no regrets” sentiment and his belief in doing things his way, Brackensick said that he didn’t take his ouster — or the judges’ refusal to save him (no matter how hard Jennifer Lopez protested) — personally. After all, he feels he can leave the show with his head held high. “You always hope for the save, because [you] want to be with each other for another week,” he sighed. “But the saves happen for a reason; I’d already been saved once, so I can’t really be saved again. You only get so many chances in life. I’m just proud of myself and the accomplishments I’ve made already.” He’s hoping he’ll keep accomplishing things post-“Idol.” Like, for example, bringing back the sweet falsetto sounds of classic R&B and the genuine emotion of music — both of which he said are sorely missed in today’s music. “That R&B soul is just lacking nowadays in music. Back in the day, everybody was a falsetto singer; it’s just so unappreciated now,” he said. “That was one of the reasons why I wanted to sing an Eric Benet song. There’s so many talented people that are not getting the love they should, and I want to bring that old sound back. I don’t even want to be a huge star. I just want music to be known, and I want messages to be getting through, like it was back in the day.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Jennifer Lopez Votes To Save DeAndre Brackensick On ‘Idol’

But other judges opt to boot springy-haired singer, who was joined by Hollie Cavanagh and Elise Testone in the bottom three. By Adam Graham DeAndre Brackensick on “American Idol” Photo: Fox DeAndre Brackensick sang “I Like It” on Wednesday’s ’80s-themed episode of “American Idol,” but America didn’t like it and sent the springy-haired singer packing on Thursday’s (April 5) elimination episode. The 17-year-old from San Jose, California, came the closest so far this season to being a recipient of a judges’ save, after performing Stevie Wonder’s “Master Blaster” following the news he received the lowest number of America’s votes. “This boy right here, we’ve been watching him for two years. You’re an amazing performer, and I stand by that,” Jennifer Lopez told him. “I think you have an amazing voice, and you’re gonna share a lot with the world, I really do believe that. [But] I only get one vote. I’m sorry, we’re not saving you tonight. I’m sorry, baby.” Host Ryan Seacrest asked Lopez if that meant she voted to save him and the other two judges didn’t. “Yes, that’s what I’m saying,” she said. Brackensick wound up in the doghouse despite receiving positive remarks from the judges Wednesday. Lopez called his performance “natural” and Steven Tyler called it “amazing,” while Randy Jackson told him, “It was one of my best performances from you.” Idol mentor Jimmy Iovine, however, had a different take. “DeAndre was not great!” he barked. “DeAndre needs to come out and grow at a much faster pace. If you look at the boys, Joshua [Ledet] is growing in leaps and bounds, and DeAndre is growing marginally.” Iovine called him the “weakest of the boys” on Wednesday. Iovine had harsh words for several of the contestants Thursday; he said Hollie Cavanagh “is approaching this like a high school performer, and last night wasn’t even a great high school performance,” while he said Elise Testone delivered “an old-fashioned choke.” (It goes without saying that Iovine has become by far the most interesting, honest judge on the show, even though he’s technically not even a judge. Can someone go ahead and change that, please?) It was Cavanagh and Testone, in fact, who joined Brackensick in the week’s bottom three. Brackensick was the first contestant sent to those lonely chairs, followed by Cavanagh and then Testone. Cavanagh was sent back to safety first, leaving Brackensick and Testone to sweat it out. Also on the show, the Wanted performed their hit “Glad You Came” and Kellie Pickler ran through her new single “Where’s Tammy Wynette,” while Jennifer Lopez debuted her “Dance Again” video . Elise Testone Wants To Know What Love Is

Following Elise Testone singing a version of Foreigner’s “I Wanna Know What Love Is” on American Idol last night, Jennifer Lopez told the finalist that she really likes her outfit. In other words: Uh-oh. Elise could be in trouble. No panelist exactly swooned over the performance, with Steven Tyler wondering if it was the proper song choice and Randy Jackson saying there were pitch problems.
