Move over, Jim Carrey! Another family member is on the way to Hollywood. On last night’s San Diego-based audition episode, 24-year old Jane Carrey tried out for American Idol , shocking Jennifer Lopez, who worked with her father way back in the day on In Living Color . Seemingly a very normal waitress with a very cute family, Jane covered the Bonnie Raitt classic “Something to Talk About” and received a Golden Ticket based on merit, not her famous, funny connections. Watch her try out below, followed by a call to her father with the good news: Jane Carrey American Idol Audition

George Clooney also won a statuette for his performance in the Alexander Payne film. By Amy Wilkinson George Clooney in “The Descendants” Photo: 20th Century Fox No tissues were necessary for the cast and crew of weepy drama “The Descendants.” The Alexander Payne-written and -directed film took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama, beating out star George Clooney’s other film “The Ides of March,” along with “The Help,” “Hugo,” “Moneyball” and “War Horse.” “We had an extraordinary ensemble cast of young and older actors, veterans and newcomers, but our quarterback was George Clooney,” said producer Jim Burke during his acceptance speech. “Besides giving a career-best performance, in my mind, he was a generous actor who helped everyone do his best. So thank you very much, George. And if this movie becomes a timeless movie, which I feel like it will be to me, I feel like it’s because of our filmmaker and friend, Alexander Payne.” “The Descendants” received five noms from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, including Best Performance by an Actress (Shailene Woodley), Best Director (Alexander Payne), Best Screenplay (Nat Faxon, Alexander Payne and Jim Rash) and Best Performance by an Actor, which Clooney won . Clooney also paid tribute to Payne in his acceptance speech, saying, “Thank you very much to Alexander Payne, who makes wonderful films and is a great friend.” The flick, about a widowed land baron (Clooney) who’s forced to reconnect with his young daughters, has racked up plenty of awards-season buzz (and was among MTV’s top 10 films of 2011 ). The film earned seven nominations and won Best Actor for Clooney at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on January 12. The nods at tonight’s Golden Globes could be a harbinger for things to come, as the Academy Award nominations will be announced January 24. Poor Lana Del Ray. The singer seems perfectly nice, and she clearly has some talent, but the artist was overwhelmed on her Saturday Night Live debut yesterday, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot during a rendition of “Video Games,” randomly rubbing her hip, lacking any and all energy or emotion. Del Ray mumbled in to the microphone and rushed through her lyrics, as the faces of her backup band members even look horrified on her behalf. See the trainwreck for yourself and join us in wishing Lana better luck next time. If there is a next time for her, that is… Lana Del Ray SNL Performance
Viola Davis and Michelle Williams, but who should win? MTV News breaks it down. By Kevin P. Sullivan Viola Davis in “The Help” Photo: Dreamworks After holding our breath for almost a month, on Sunday, we will find out who will be taking home this year’s Golden Globes . The competition has shifted significantly since the nominees were first announced in December, so we’re going to take a look at where the hopefuls stand and who has the best shot at winning gold. Here are our thoughts on the categories of Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical: Best Actress – Drama This Globes category contains the two nominees most people consider the lead contenders for Best Actress on Oscar night. Expect people to be paying close attention to this category in particular, since there hasn’t been a runaway favorite throughout awards season. This award could change all of that. Who Will Win : Viola Davis for “The Help.” With her win at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards , Davis confirmed theories that she was the favorite in this category. Her powerful performance played well with audiences across the board in a movie generally more liked than those of other nominees. Who Should Win : Viola Davis for “The Help.” Sorry, Ms. Streep, this is simply Davis’ year. Hers was an emotionally powerful performance and the one that left audiences weeping. She’s the favorite for a reason. Best Actress – Comedy or Musical With the exception of Michelle Williams, the actresses in this category turned in great performances but have lacked the buzz to make them serious Oscar contenders. Unfortunately, this category will be one of the few chances to honor some of the year’s best unsung performances. Who Will Win : Michelle Williams for “My Week With Marilyn.” It’s the dramatic role in the comedy category. That’s not the only difference here; Williams’ portrayal of the blond bombshell has been mentioned in nearly every other actress’ honor, unlike many of her fellow nominees. It’s an iconic performance that might skate by on an odd categorization. Who Should Win : Charlize Theron for “Young Adult.” It took balls to bring life to the wholly unlikable Mavis Gary, and it’s exactly the kind of unsympathetic portrayal that is rarely seen these days. Theron pushed away convention and expectation and turned in one of the most memorable performances in a stellar career. Pop and Oak faced major sample issues with Pink Friday track, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Bill McCay/ WireImage Behind the Beats: Pop and Oak Fans might not know Pop and Oak by name, but they damn sure know their beats. Trey Songz’s “Unusual,” Big Sean and Kanye West’s “Marvin & Chardonnay” and, of course, Nicki Minaj ‘s 2010 single “Your Love” are just a few of the duo’s hits. Now they’re up for a Grammy thanks to their work on Nicki’s Pink Friday, which is nominated in the Best Rap Album category. Pop, a Philadelphia native, and his production partner Oak, who hails from Istanbul, Turkey, have been working as a duo since 2008, back when they first produced “Your Love” for a then-emerging Minaj. ” ‘Your Love’ was a song that didn’t make Beam Me Up Scotty, the mixtape,” Pop told Mixtape Daily. Nicki was super-critical of her performance on the song, but after it eventually leaked at the top of 2010, there was no stopping it — well, there was one little obstacle to clear. The original leaked version featured a sample of Annie Lennox’s 1995 version of “No More I Love You’s,” but after the U.K. singer wouldn’t clear the sample, Pop and Oak had to come up with an alternative. “They didn’t let us clear the sample, so the version that leaked wasn’t the version that got on the radio. We ended up re-creating it,” Oak said. The duo redid the sample a little too well, it seemed. Even after the switch-up, Lennox’s lawyers continued to reach out, thinking Nicki’s new version of “Your Love” still incorporated the sample. “They thought what they were hearing on the radio was still the master,” Oak said. “Annie Lennox thought she was hearing herself, which was fly as hell,” Pop added. ‘Contraband’ actor tells MTV News he’d like to ‘do something that’s a little more on the comedic side.’ By Kevin P. Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars also on the show. By Gil Kaufman Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images The performer roster for the upcoming 54th annual Grammy Awards is beginning to fill out and Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift are among the nominated ladies who will take the stage on the show. They’ll have plenty of help from some of this year’s other nominees, as Kelly Clarkson, the Foo Fighters , Bruno Mars and Jason Aldean will also sing on the show. The show, which airs live on CBS on February 12, will mark the first Grammy performance for Aldean and Minaj. The Foos and Mars will go into the night with six nominations each, while Minaj is vying in four categories, including Best New Artist , where she’ll face off against Bon Iver, Skrillex, J. Cole and the Band Perry. Aldean and Swift are both up for three awards and Clarkson has two nominations. While many of the most decorated acts typically perform on the show, there is no word yet on whether the night’s leading nominee, Kanye West , who has seven nods, will play on the show. It’s also unknown if six-time-nominee Adele will be sufficiently recovered from her vocal surgery to make her comeback appearance on the broadcast. While Adele has not confirmed or denied her appearance, a recent report claimed that she is in talks to sing on the show now that she’s begun talking again with her doctor’s permission. Since she doesn’t want to rush back and injure her vocal cord again, the singer is reportedly waiting until early next month to decide if she can sing in public again. More performers, presenters and special segment will be announced in the coming weeks. Related Artists Nicki Minaj Foo Fighters Bruno Mars Kelly Clarkson Taylor Swift
