Lady Gaga’s VMA Fashion ‘Will Be Making A Statement’

2011 MTV Video Music Awards nominee says, ‘In the overarching scheme of pop culture, I hope to change what things mean.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage.com For Lady Gaga , attending an awards show is not just about showing up and having a good time. For her, it’s also about making a statement. And, many times, that statement is tied to the many, many wardrobe changes she makes throughout the night. That, of course, includes the MTV Video Music Awards , where Gaga will be in attendance Sunday night. For her first VMAs , in 2009, Gaga made four costume changes, one of which included her seemingly bleeding onstage during her performance of “Paparazzi.” Then, in 2010, she might have had three costume changes, but her most memorable was her Franc Fernandez-designed meat dress. “When I came to VMAs that year, it was not perceived as performance, it was perceived as costume changes,” she recently dished to MTV News. “My seat is my seat. In the overarching scheme of pop culture, I hope to change what things mean and have them branch into other areas.” While no one knows what or how many outfits she will wear during Sunday night’s show, she did share what her bottom line is: “I will be making a statement.” That mirrors what she said during “MTV First: Lady Gaga” earlier this month, where she shared that her celebrity is a big art installation. “I think something that’s always been very important to me … is that the fame as an art form has always been an interesting stage,” she said. “It begins on the subway or in the car on the way here. It begins when I wake up in the morning and I take a shower. It’s not something that is temporal. It has no end, so I’m excited to continue as an artist to push the boundaries of where pop music can exist.” This year, Gaga is up for four Moonmen including Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message for “Born This Way,” as well as Best Art Direction and Best Choreography for “Judas.” Also, she will open the show with the night’s first performance. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Rihanna Raises A Glass To Fans In ‘Cheers’ Video

Avril Lavigne cameos in montage of celebrations off- and onstage. By James Dinh Rihanna Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images Summer is coming to a close, but it looks like Rihanna is going to keep the party going for a little longer. On Friday (August 26), the pop force debuted the video for her celebratory tune “Cheers (Drink to That),” a behind-the-scenes concert montage with brief cameo appearances by Avril Lavigne , Jay-Z and Kanye West . Chanting fans kick off the almost-five minute clip, which cuts between candid footage of the songstress backstage before and after her shows, and enjoying the festivities during her recent trip to Barbados. Rocking some denim blue shorts, a colorful cropped top and sunglasses, Rihanna also gives fans a glimpse of her performance of the tune during her Loud tour set. “Cheers (Drink to That)” samples Avril Lavigne’s yodel from her 2002 hit “I’m With You,” so it’s only appropriate that the visual includes sporadic blink-of-the-eye appearances from the pop rocker horsing around by the pool. “It was really exciting because ‘I’m With You’ is one of my favorite songs that I’ve done, I always love performing it,” Lavigne said last year of being sampled on “Cheers.” “Cheers to the freaking weekend/ I drink to that, yeah yeah/ Oh, let the Jameson sink in/ I drink to that, yeah yeah/ Don’t let the bastards get you down/ Turn it around with another round/ There’s a party at the bar everybody put your glasses up and I drink to that,” Rihanna sings, almost casually, as she’s seen toasting fans and friends onstage and in bars. Hours after the debut, Rih took to Twitter to ask fans what they thought about the clip, writing, “CHEERS… U like??? #drinktothat #RihannaNavy I love yall forever!!!!! Keep making me proud!” The Rihanna Navy has been pushing for the singer to release “Cheers (Drink to That)” since the LP’s release, and there’s no denying that the Barbados beauty also has love for the song. “I love that song [‘Cheers’]. That is one of my favorite songs on the album. It makes you feel like celebrating,” Rihanna told MTV News last year. “It gives you a great feeling inside, like you want to go out and have a drink. … People can’t wait for the weekend.” Related Artists Avril Lavigne Rihanna

Scarface Released From Jail

Houston rapper spent 10 months behind bars for failure to pay child support. By Rob Markman Scarface (file) Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images After 10 months behind bars for failure to pay child support, Scarface was recently released from Harris County Jail in Texas and is now prepping an album for the end of the year, a rep for the Houston rapper confirmed to MTV News. The Geto Boys rapper (born Brad Jordan) was jailed October 13, and it was reported by XXLMag.com that ‘Face owed more than $123,000 in child support on four separate cases. Bonds were reportedly set in each case with separate amounts: one for $93,376, another for $50,000, a third bond for $30,000 and the fourth and final one for $500, bringing the grand total to $123,372. It was also reported that the “I Seen a Man Die” MC was being held on unspecified federal charges, but MTV News has not been able to confirm that information. Scarface made his mark as the leader of the Geto Boys, the Texas group that broke out with the 1991 single “Mind Playing Tricks on Me.” Soon after, ‘Face embarked on a solo career and dropped his own debut, 1993’s Mr. Scarface Is Back. In the years that followed, he continued to release well-regarded albums, including 1994’s Diary and 1997’s Untouchable, which featured his Tupac-assisted single “Smile.” In 2008, Scarface released what he called his final album, Emeritus. He then followed up in 2010 with his mixtape Dopeman Music before being locked up later that year. Related Artists Scarface

Florence And The Machine Return With ‘What The Water Gave Me’

Florence Welch gives fans first taste of what they can expect on her new disc, due in November. By James Montgomery Florence Welch Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/WireImage Florence and the Machine conquered audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with their dynamic, dramatic debut, 2009’s Lungs. Ever since, fans have been clamoring for the follow-up. Now, it’s finally on the horizon. On Tuesday (August 23), Florence Welch announced on her official site that her sophomore album would hit stores on November 7 in the U.K., and according to her rep, it’ll be out sometime the same month here in the U.S. She also gave us all a sneak peek of what we can expect on the disc with a soaring, chiming, epically massive new track called “What the Water Gave Me,” which is imbued with a gospel choir and Welch’s epic pipes, and seems destined to rule the festival circuit for the foreseeable future. The still-untitled album is produced by Paul Epworth and was recorded at London’s iconic Abbey Road studios. Welch had been premiering a handful of tracks from the record during live shows — the standout “Strangeness and Charm” will reportedly also make the cut — and earlier this summer, before her performance at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee, she sat down with MTV News to discuss the process behind making the new album, calling it a more cohesive effort than her debut. “I wrote so much of my first album at different times and places — some songs when I was 18, some when I was 21 — so there are so many pieces and styles on it,” she said. “And that’s one of the things I love about it, but for my new record, I wanted to do things differently. It’s why I worked with one producer in one studio. I want to tie all those things together … in one piece, if possible.” Welch also said that the album draws inspiration from ethereal sources too, including one song on the album she wrote after a ghostly visitation. “There’s a song on it that’s inspired by a visit [from] my dead grandmother — like, I had a really, really vivid dream about her and, um, she was giving me advice in this dream,” she said. “And it was really emotional, and I woke up crying. And there’s one song that’s inspired by that experience.” Related Artists Florence + the Machine

Pukkelpop Festival Death Toll Rises To Five

Organizers call off Belgium event, which featured Eminem, Foo Fighters, Wiz Khalifa and many others, after deaths following stage collapse. By Gil Kaufman Revelers leave the Pukkelpop music festival Photo: AFP/Getty Images Officials in Belgium canceled the Pukkelpop music festival on Friday after the death toll in a stage collapse rose to five. Two more people died overnight after a freak thunderstorm ripped through the festival site in Hasselt, ripping down trees and destroying a stage while Chicago rock band the Smith Westerns were performing their set. According to MSNBC , none of the band’s members were hurt, but their equipment was destroyed in the fourth major incident involving a concert stage collapse this summer. Organizers decided to cancel the rest of the fest and brought in buses and trains to transfer the 60,000 festivalgoers home. The action came after a brief, violent thunderstorm passed through on Thursday evening, collapsing concert tents and the main stage scaffolding, sending panicked concertgoers out into fields of mud in search of shelter. At least 140 people were injured in the incident, 10 of them seriously. “Pukkelpop is in deep mourning,” festival organizer Chokri Mahassine said in a statement. “What has happened is very exceptional and could not have been predicted.” Not aware of the severity of the situation at the time, Smith Westerns singer Cullen Omori tweeted about the stage collapse as it happened. He first complained about the band’s equipment being destroyed (in a since-deleted post) and then wrote, “praying no one go hurt. Wtf.” The band later issued a statement about the collapse. “We had just finished the first song of our set at Pukkelpop when the stage/tent started shaking and simply thought it was a storm passing through. I made a comment about Cheap Trick and we were about to play the next one when our tour manager yelled at me to run off the stage. Right then the tress collapsed one foot in front of Max. At this point we thought only the stage broke, not the tent. Amid the chaos it was hard to tell exactly what had happened, but after the rescue teams started coming in it became clear that there were severe injuries and we are now being told there are reports of multiple deaths. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones in today’s tragedy.” The festival’s lineup included the Foo Fighters, 30 Seconds to Mars , Wiz Khalifa, Rise Against and Eminem. A Facebook page has been set up to honor the victims and a number of bands tweeted their condolences. “Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the tragic events at Pukkelpop,” the Foos tweeted . “We are all safe at Pukkelpop. Crazy storm. This is awful. Hearts go out to all,” added Fleet Foxes . Eminem was slated to headline on Friday (August 19), on a bill that also included the Ting Tings, Deftones, Crystal Castles and D12. Saturday’s show was to feature the Offspring, Kasabian, the Kills, Lykke Li, Busy P and Odd Future. The Pukkelpop tragedy follows on the heels of earlier stage collapses this summer at shows by Cheap Trick and the Flaming Lips, and just last week, Sugarland , where five people were killed.

Anne Hathaway Talks Pressures Of Adapting ‘One Day’

Actress tells MTV News she saw people reading book all over London during filming. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway in “One Day” Photo: Giles Keyte Anne Hathaway knows you have your doubts about her, but she’s ready to impress you with “One Day.” The actress is no stranger to adapting well-loved literature to the big screen, having starred in “The Princess Diaries” and “Brokeback Mountain.” But having to speak in an English accent and co-helm a romance novel that fans were so protective of certainly put the pressure on when she was filming “One Day.” Fortunately, the response from fans has been positive so far. MTV News caught up with Hathaway and her co-star Jim Sturgess recently, and “The Dark Knight Rises” actress said that people have received her performance in the flick positively. “I’ve had people come up to me who have seen it actually and they say, ‘I didn’t think you could pull it off.’ And people feel inclined to tell me that they really had no faith in me whatsoever,” she said with a laugh. “So far, it’s ended with a, ‘But you surprised me, and I really enjoyed your performance.’ But I’m just waiting for that person to come up and say, ‘Well I knew you couldn’t do it.’ ” She added that the pressure was amplified by the fact that when she and Sturgess were filming in London, Hathaway saw people all across the city reading the book. The cover of the novel’s U.K. edition is orange, and Hathaway said it would freak her out to see “One Day” so prominently featured in every bookstore she walked into. “At night, it kind of lights the streets of London,” Sturgess joked. People who want to walk into “One Day” spoiler-free might not be too psyched to hear that both Hathaway and Sturgess say they prefer “ill-fated, tear-inducing” romantic films as opposed to ones that end happily ever after. That news certainly doesn’t bode well for the love story between their onscreen characters. While Sturgess said he feels that way because he’s “just cynical,” Hathaway explained that she feels tragic romantic stories stay with a person longer. “If something’s happily ever after, yay, you’re happy for them, but what else do you feel about it? When something rips your guts out, you’re more inclined to remember it,” she explained. Gavin DeGraw ‘Feeling Much Better’ After Attack

‘I can’t wait to get back out on tour and look forward to seeing you on the road sometime soon,’ singer tells VH1. By James Dinh Gavin DeGraw Photo: Neilson Barnard/ Getty Images It’s been a little more than a week since Gavin DeGraw was released from the hospital after a brutal attack by a group of unknown men in New York’s East Village, but the “I Don’t Want to Be” singer wants fans to know that his recovery is going smoothly. “Instead of checking in from the tour, I’m writing as I recover at home,” DeGraw told VH1 . “I’m feeling much better, but it will take a little bit more time to be back to 100%! I’m overwhelmed with the outpouring of support from my fans, friends, and family.” Despite canceling a number of tour dates after the attack, DeGraw admitted he’s already itching to hit the road again. “I can’t wait to get back out on tour and look forward to seeing you on the road sometime soon,” he said. DeGraw was out drinking with some friends on the evening of August 7 when he split off by himself and was attacked sometime after 5:30 a.m. “Gavin DeGraw is currently recovering and in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital where he was taken late Sunday night by ambulance after he was attacked by a group of assailants,” a spokesperson for the 34-year-old singer told MTV News just after the attack. “He suffers from a concussion, broken nose, black eyes, cuts and bruises. The police are conducting an investigation of the attack.” DeGraw is scheduled to return to the stage Wednesday in Columbia, Maryland, alongside Maroon 5 and Train. Aside from touring, the singer is set to release his fifth album, Sweeter, on September 20. Share your well-wishes for Gavin DeGraw in the comments below. Related Artists Gavin DeGraw

Anne Hathaway ‘Surprised’ Fans With ‘One Day’ Accent

‘I’ve had people come up to me [and] say, ‘I didn’t think you could pull it off,’ ‘ she tells MTV News of her British accent. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Anne Hathaway Photo: MTV News “One Day” might not mark the first time Anne Hathaway has a British accent in a film, but that doesn’t make it any easier to get back into character after filming has wrapped. When MTV News caught up with Hathaway, we asked if she could turn the English accent on easily, having previously acted with a British accent in “Becoming Jane,” but she said she never had an easy time slipping into it. “The accent, as soon as I left England, the accent left me,” she said. “We had to go back to do looping; I made sure I went over many days in advance to get back into it. It’s not one that comes naturally, for sure.” To prove her point, Hathaway offered to show off the remnants of her accent to MTV News. ” ‘Ello, MTV, how’s it going?” Hathaway said in her best Cockney voice while wearing a big smile on her face. “I just insulted, by the way, an entire nation of people,” she said afterward, but British co-star Jim Sturgess appeased her by saying, “I feel all right about it.” That earned a laugh from Hathaway, who said, “OK, good, I have one on my side.” So far, Hathaway said she hasn’t gotten any negative feedback about the accent. Everyone she’s talked to who has seen her in the flick has been impressed by her performance, and she’s hoping it will stay that way. “I’ve had people come up to me who have seen it actually and they say, ‘I didn’t think you could pull it off.’ And people feel inclined to tell me that they really had no faith in me whatsoever,” she said with a laugh. “So far, it’s ended with a ‘But you surprised me, and I really enjoyed your performance.’ But I’m just waiting for that person to come up and say, ‘Well, I knew you couldn’t do it.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “One Day.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
