Odd Future Run Wild At The Woodies: Watch Backstage Footage Now!

MTV News is with the L.A. collective as they take over Texas for South by Southwest. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Christopher “CJ” Smith and Dominic Masi Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images AUSTIN, Texas — If you’ve seen any of their performances — like, for example, their reign of terror last month on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” — then you probably knew what to expect from oddball L.A. rap collective Odd Future at the mtvU Woodie Awards on Wednesday: It was definitely going to be memorable, probably to the point of psychological scarring. And while what we got during the show was most certainly, well, odd (a pair of furry mascots, two beefy security guards, one masked little person, garden gnomes, rainbows and a whole lot of growling, to be precise), there was also a focused, snarling intensity to their set — perhaps due to the fact that, in their first South by Southwest, despite the thousands of other bands in attendance, Odd Future knew they were the center of attention. That much was apparent from the minute they arrived at Woodies rehearsals. Between photo-ops with Wiz Khalifa, hugs from Zoe Kravitz and onstage shout-outs from Pete Wentz, OF put on a show both on camera and off, tearing across the stage during rehearsals and then, minutes before stepping into the spotlight for their performance, pacing the backstage hallways, snarling and swearing, psyching themselves up, much to the delight (and terror) of those around them. (As one stagehand joked, “This is the best bar mitzvah I’ve ever been to.”) Much like last month, MTV News’ cameras were there , following the Odd Future crew every step of the way. And while we’ll be rolling out more in the coming days, in honor of their Woodies performance, here’s Odd Future seconds before stepping onstage. What did you think of Odd Future’s performance? TRAILER: Could Friends with Benefits Be the Movie No Strings Attached Wished It Was?

Confession time: I love Justin Timberlake. Not his music career, mind you — though who doesn’t love a little ” Rock Your Body ” every once in a while — but his acting one. You can grumble that he jumped the shark with endless appearances on SNL and his performance as himself — er, Sean Parker in The Social Network , but for my money, Timberlake constantly hits it out of the park. He even makes something as disposable as Bad Teacher look moderately watchable in a “Let’s wait to see it on a Wednesday night on HBO2 !” sort of way. All of which is a long way around saying that his presence in Friends with Benefits is key to making this summer rom-com look positively charming.

Is Lauren Alaina the Only One?

Lauren Alaina was among the American Idol finalists who performed with the flu last night. But the resulting, smokey sound may have actually helped this 16-year old with her rendition of Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m the Only One.” Thanks to a confident stage presence and a well-trained voice, Alaina earned a wild ovation from the crowd, along with the label of a “shining star” from Steven Tyler. Said Jennifer Lopez, simply and accurately: “That’s staying true to the melody and framework of the song but still giving it your own flavor. Very good job.” Lauren Alaina – I’m the Only One

Jimmy Fallon to Tiger Woods: Thank You!!!

Tiger Woods made a rare television appearance last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon – the golfer’s first such interview since the late 2009 “incident.” We don’t have to get into Rachel Uchitel , the car crash and everything else. Fallon started off asking Woods what he’s been up to the last year and a half. “Oh, nothing, nothing… Playing bad golf,” the champion said, smiling. “From a comedian’s stand-point and my monologue writers, thank you,” Fallon said, speaking for all of us. “Your awful pain, we laughed at your pain.” Even Tiger had to chuckle when Fallon added: “Not even making jokes, it kind of wrote itself. Balls, shaft, holes, foursomes … it really writes itself!” Woods had a fairly good time after that, talking about his charitable foundation, his recent top-10 finish and his bachelor pad/backyard golf course. Later, Woods, Fallon and Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler demonstrated Tiger’s new golf video game (ostensibly his reason for being there). Thia Megia Makes Like Pocahontas

Tasked with covering a song from the year of her birth, Thia Megia went all Disney on American Idol viewers last night. The season 10 hopeful delivered a lovely version of Vanessa Williams’ “Colors of the Wind” from the 1995 film Pocahontas . Wow. Yes, Thia Megia was born in 1995. It’s a safe choice, one that shows off Megia’s steady, strong tone and style. Randy thought the selection was a bit too safe, while Jennifer Lopez questions the quality of her vibrato. Watch the performance for yourself and sound off now: What do you think of Thia? Thia Megia – Colors of the Wind

Sleigh Bells Promise ‘Flying,’ Unitards For Woodies Performance

Band shares stage with Foo Fighters, Wiz Khalifa, others at 2011 mtvU Woodies, airing live at midnight Wednesday. By Matt Harper, with reporting by James Montgomery Sleigh Bells with James Montgomery in Austin, Texas Photo: Matt Harper/MTV News AUSTIN, Texas — With a list of performers that includes not only Wiz Khalifa and insane L.A. rap collective Odd Future but the freakin’ Foo Fighters too, the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards are shaping up to be a can’t-miss show. So much so that you’ve got to feel sorry for some of the other acts on the bill … they’ve really got to step it up. Luckily, one of those acts, Brooklyn bashers Sleigh Bells , are up to the task. Or at least they sound like they are. Because when MTV News caught up with the dynamic duo on Tuesday during Woodies rehearsals, they were more than willing to reveal the details of their big performance. “I’m coming down on wires,” guitarist/producer Derek E. Miller laughed. “Yes, Derek is flying around, he’s wearing a unitard,” singer Alexis Krauss added. Of course, when we mentioned we had some doubts about the wire work (and the unitard), the Bells quickly recanted. But they weren’t about to say what their performance would actually feature. “There’s definitely some surprises,” Krauss said, playing it coy. “We haven’t said anything about it so I don’t really want to say anything more than we’ve said … if that made any sense.” Not really, but hey … If all goes according to plan, Krauss and Miller won’t just be hitting the stage for their secretive performance, they might be making an acceptance speech too. They’re nominated for the Breaking Woodie award — up against the likes of Local Natives, Wavves, Dev and Two Door Cinema Club — and win or lose, they’re planning on making the night memorable. “Obviously it would feel good to win,” Krauss said, diplomatically. “It would be fun, but if we don’t, it’s OK …” “[If we lose,] then I’m just gonna burn the place down,” Miller laughed. The 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards will air live on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU on Wednesday, March 16, at midnight (ET/PT) from the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Lauryn Hill Announces More Moving Target Tour Dates

Former Fugees frontwoman also launches Twitter account. By James Dinh Lauryn Hill After wrapping up her first outing in years, Lauryn Hill is keeping her comeback momentum going strong by announcing the second leg of her tour, Moving Target: Extended Intimate Playdate Series. Beginning Wednesday, the former Fugees frontwoman will kick off the 12-date outing in Florida before making her way to the West Coast, then wrapping up in May at the New Orleans jazz festival. More dates are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Like the first leg of the tour, Hill is making sure to visit smaller venues to give fans a more intimate experience. “One of the benefits of playing venues smaller than the ones I’m used to allows me the opportunity to not only reconnect with my supporters but to expose them to a portion of the musical journey I’ve been on which the world for the most part has not had access to,” the 35-year-old singer said in a statement. “I’ve never shied away from being musically adventurous, nor am I known for being a lightweight when it comes to lyrical content or musical exploration.” The elusive singer/rapper also opened up about her hiatus from the big stage, admitting that she’s still in the process of regaining all of her performance skills. “Getting back out there to perform is a lot like resuming a strenuous sport after having been away from it for a while, but eventually the muscle memory kicks in, and each day brings progressive strength. It’s an exciting and real process which these audiences will get to witness,” she continued. While Hill has remained shy of press in recent years, the iconic MC has launched a Twitter account to keep fans updated on the latest news and updates for the tour. The account hasn’t yet been verified. Lauryn Hill’s Moving Target: Extended Intimate Playdate Series tour dates:
