Inside Justin Bieber’s VMA Performance: Fans Take Over!

Beliebers cheer on the singer during his debut VMA performance. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber with fans during his 201 VMA performance Photo: Rachel Goldner/ MTV News LOS ANGELES — Just days before the Video Music Awards kicked off, Justin Bieber rehearsed for his big performance at L.A. Live to little fanfare. However, on Sunday night (September 12), Bieber’s fans showed up with super-high Bieber Fevers for the teen star’s debut VMA performance . Not only did Bieber get Kim Kardashian to introduce him and poke fun at their, um, romance, but he managed to get VMA host Chelsea Handler out of the Nokia Theatre for his set with a sign that read “Chelsea Loves Bieber.” While Kardashian and Handler were surprises, the set was much like his rehearsal, an obvious reference to his “Hard Day’s Night”-inspired VMA promo . The big difference this time around was the crowd of screaming fans there for Bieber’s amplified set, which included “U Smile,” “Baby” and “Somebody to Love.” Aside from the crowd right in front of his stage, Beliebers also gathered across the street at the Staples Center to catch a glimpse of the performance. “MTV, make some noise,” Bieber told the crowd before he played “Somebody to Love” and confetti fell into the quad where he was playing. But Bieber didn’t run off the stage as the song finished. Instead, he stood there, gave his dancers and band hugs and excitedly took in his moment as fans cheered on his triumphant debut VMA performance. His fans agreed that the performance was well worth it. “I thought it was cool,” fan Genevieve told MTV News from her spot atop a balcony overlooking the stage. “He’s a better performer than I thought.” Reagan agreed, saying, “He really put together a great performance.” And just like that, Bieber and his fans were whisked away. Florence And The Machine Crank Out Explosive VMA Performance

VMA virgins deliver dance, drums and more in ‘Dog Days Are Over’ set. By Mawuse Ziegbe Florence and the Machine’s Florence Welch performs at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Florence and the Machine obviously know how to keep a promise. The U.K. group, fronted by crimson-haired songstress Florence Welch, told MTV News a few days ago that their MTV Video Music Award debut would be a load of kinda-choreographed chaos. And they were not playing around. The Machine served up an elaborate, soulful rendition of their multi-VMA-nominated, drum-driven jam “Dog Days Are Over.” Donning a drape-y pastel dress, Welch reclined on a rotating platform, red hair splayed about and clutching a gilded mic as she crooned the delicate opening notes to the breakout hit. As she continued to sing directly into an aerial camera shot, the lens pulled out to reveal seven blue-skinned, ’60s-bouffant-sporting vamps working synchronized poses around the platform. As the track ramped up, Welch stood upright and bounded around the stage, leading a throng of undulating dancers billowing across the set in wispy loincloths. The performance spliced together everything from modern dance to rural church revivals, as an army of drummers rocked out, smacking their instruments with impassioned fervor, and a choir lining the back of the stage dished out heartfelt cheer. Welch recently explained that the Machine sought to re-create the frenetic and ethereal vibe of the video, which also features a trippy array of vibrant percussionists and dancers decked out in out-of-this-world costumes. “What we’re trying to do is kind of encapsulate the video into a live performance,” Welch said. “There’s a lot of different characters in the video, and so I’m going to be trying to bring some of that. It’s just about the energy of the song, for me. It’s sort of energy and chaos.” Choreographer Travis Wall has also dubbed the performance “a huge celebration.” VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick explained that the performance should establish the British newbies Stateside. “People have heard the song on television, but maybe those people haven’t made the connection to Florence the artist, so that’s part of what her performance is going to be about,” Sirulnick said. The big night continues for the VMA virgins, who scored four nods, including Best Rock Video, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography . Florence and the Machine are still up for the coveted Video of the Year award. What did you think of Florence and the Machine’s VMA performance? Sound off in the comments below! What Will Kanye West Do At The VMAs?

‘Each piece of the performance tonight is slowly falling into place,’ ‘Ye tweets before Sunday night’s show. By Shaheem Reid Kanye West Photo: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images It’s several hours to showtime, but hundreds of people are already in place and ready to work the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . While many are looking forward to seeing acts such as Eminem, Nicki Minaj and Drake, Kanye West’s history of delivering high-octane, unique VMA sets makes his one of the most highly anticipated appearances of the night Two years ago he closed the VMAs with a tremendous bang (literally, on taiko drums), when he debuted “Love Lockdown.” In 2007, he brought the ultimate party in Las Vegas, as he and everyone lucky enough to be in the room with him donned those unforgettable “Stronger” shades . Of course, there was his thumping collaboration of Gold Digger” with Jamie Foxx in ’05 . And in 2004, he brought out Chaka Khan for his medley of “Through the Wire,” “Jesus Walks” and “All Falls Down.” All of Kanye’s performances share the fact that they had elements of surprise, a bevy of eye candy and a wealth of passion on the mic. His rehearsal for Sunday night’s show was strictly closed-door, so all of us are left wondering: What will ‘Ye bring to this year’s VMAs? Something special, for sure. “Just given the pace that Kanye is running at these days — tweeting, jumping on tables, giving his fans a weekly G.O.O.D Music treat — it’s dizzying,” radio personality and journalist Miss Info said Sunday morning in L.A. “So, I’m hoping that unlike his detached performance of ‘Power’ at the BET Awards , his VMA performance is that interactive, having-fun Kanye that we love. Also, a li’l birdie tells me we’ll be hearing something we’ve never heard before. So I can’t wait. I just want non-apologetic, in-your-face rap!” West tweeted about how exhilarated he felt on Sunday morning. “I wish my mom was here, but I know she’s looking down,” he wrote . “I want to make her so happy today. ” #VMAs tonight!” he wrote in another post. “I still feel the adrenaline… WWMJD!” In one of his earlier posts, he expressed fond memories of the VMAs. “I remember our first Award show and how hard we partied. … We were so happy. “It’s funny. I can’t believe it’s been a whole year,” he added. “But can’t believe all that’s happened within this year at the same time. Each piece of the performance tonight is slowly falling into place… I get so excited to do new things … new energy. I can feel the positive energy … I feel so blessed on this day.” Tune in tonight for the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles! Eminem To Open Video Music Awards

Eight-time nominee will kick off the big night Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage VMA vet Eminem will not only return to the stage Sunday, his performance will open the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . Fresh from a pair of historic Home and Home Tour stops in his native Detroit with Jay-Z , Em, who has delivered a slew of unforgettable VMA moments in the past, will set the tone for the show’s 27th go-round. “We thought that there’s no better way to kick off the show than a performance from Eminem,” MTV general manager Stephen Friedman recently told The Associated Press. Sunday will be a busy night for Shady, who is up for eight Moonmen . His chart-dominating release Recovery has already racked up more than 2 million album scans and yielded hits like “Not Afraid,” which is up for Best Male Video and Video of the Year. Although public details about his performance remain scant, Em has always been good for iconic VMA moments. In 2000, he led a mass of Shady look-alikes into Radio City Music Hall as he spit his celebrity-skewering chart-topper “The Real Slim Shady,” which went on to win Video of the Year. Offstage, Em was the center of three awkward and, at times, potty-mouthed, moments in 2002 featuring foes Christina Aguilera, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and Moby . Last year, Em kept things censor-friendly when he appeared in a video short, tearing up after coaching “30 Rock” comic Tracy Morgan through a duet with ’80s poptress Cyndi Lauper . Other stars slated to hit the stage Sunday are Kanye West, Linkin Park, Mary J. Blige, Drake, Usher, Paramore, Justin Bieber, B.o.B and Florence and the Machine. What are your predictions for Eminem’s VMA performance? Let us know in the comments below! The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Here is the Tom Hardy Workout Video You Didn’t Know You Wanted

Here’s something nice for you to watch while you’re eating an entire thing of Gallo salami slices at your desk (as I may or may not be doing currently): a workout video starring Inception’s semi-bisexual breakout Tom Hardy. The clip was shot as Hardy buffed up for his unrecognizable role in last year’s Bronson , and it’s an interesting testimonial to the modern-day reality that our best actors need to be absolute gym fiends (and that loose, baggy gym pants can still be oddly revealing). Enjoy!

REVIEW: You’ll Hate Going the Distance Long Before You Relate to It

I stand before you the apparent target market for Going the Distance , the latest ‘x’ in the “con” column of Drew Barrymore’s exasperating career ledger. After a recent expedition into critically acclaimed territory that produced her directing debut Whip It and a first Golden Globe for her performance as Little Edie Bouvier in Gray Gardens , she has returned to the populous, brain-bashing shoals of romantic comedy. Similar to He’s Just Not That Into You , which was based on a bestselling dating guide that seemed to capture the imagination of budding Cathy’s everywhere, Going the Distance hopes to skate by on its thin blade of cultural cachet. Having declared fantasy passé, certain rom-com scientists are exploring the lure not of engaging escapism but tame, tranquilizing relatability . It’s a concept so edgy my spellchecker is rejecting it. But it’s a word, spellchecker. It’s also now a selling edge for the same old crappy motion picture.

How the once mighty have fallen. In the midst of covering the performance of the broadcast networks last week, David Bauder at the Associated Press noted the following (HT Kevin Alloca at Media Bistro ): Meanwhile, the NBC, ABC and CBS evening newscasts combined for a dubious record last week: the average of 18.7 million people who watched one of the three shows last week was the smallest audience those three telecasts have reached collectively on record, since the infancy of television, Nielsen said. During the slow news period of late August, the broadcasts broke their previous record — set just last week. Little did I know that my post last week (at NewsBusters ; at BizzyBlog ) also covered a negative record-breaker. The news actually got worse from there, Media Bistro’s Chris Ariens separately reported : And not a good sign from the younger viewer department — none of the shows broke the 2 million viewer average in the A25-54 demo. That’s the first time that’s ever happened. I don’t find the contention by the AP’s Bauder about the “slow news period of late August” very convincing. Political campaigns are already heating up, and family vacation season was mostly over, as the large majority of children were back in school last week. The networks’ collective performance was down almost 8% from a year ago for all viewers, and over 14% in the 25-54 demo. I think it’s more likely that more and more viewers and news consumers are tuning out because they agree with this sentiment . It will be interesting to see what if any kind of fall recovery there will be at the Big 3 networks’ evening newscasts. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .
