Russell Brand Talks Revisiting Addiction In ‘Get Him To The Greek’

‘It’s not worth it,’ he tells MTV News of using drugs and alcohol again. ‘Not for me.’ By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Russell Brand Photo: MTV News Russell Brand is bound to bring the laughs when he reprises his role as rock star Aldous Snow in “Get Him to the Greek,” but there’s one major disparity between the comedian and his character: While Snow regularly indulges in promiscuous sex and drug-abusing behavior, Brand has kept his distance from that kind of lifestyle since abandoning drugs and alcohol several years ago. Still, Brand’s experience as an addict proved helpful in crafting the character of Snow, as the actor told MTV News that it provided some authenticity to his performance in “Get Him to the Greek.” “Say that when you were a child, there was a time where someone stood in front of you and strangled a kitten, then you had to do a film in which there’s a scene where somebody strangles a kitten. You’d definitely remember the childhood time when that kitten-strangling happened, which would make you more authentic in the film,” he explained. “But when you go home, you’ll say, ‘Oh, that poor kitten.’ [Playing Snow] was a bit like that, except there were no kittens strangled in the making of this film. Well, there was one.” Brand said that his character’s closeness to drug culture never tempted the actor himself into relapsing: “I don’t take relapsing very seriously as a possibility in terms of thinking of it as ‘Must not relapse. Must not relapse.’ But it reminded me, ‘Don’t do drugs.’ It’s not worth it. Not for me.” That’s not to say Brand isn’t without his vices, of course. “Every day, nine times, I watch ‘Finding Nemo,’ ” he laughed. “Is that a problem? I love that little guy. He’s got that tiny fin! It makes me happy.” Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Janet Jackson Sings ‘Nothing,’ Gets ‘Nasty’ On ‘American Idol’

Singer wows ‘Idol’ viewers with back-to-back performances of new song ‘Nothing,’ followed by classic ‘Nasty.’ By Josh Wigler Janet Jackson Photo: MTV News As the season nine finale of “American Idol” drew close to the finish line, the crowd gathered at the Nokia Theatre and the viewers at home waited nervously for either single mom Crystal Bowersox or paint salesman Lee DeWyze to be crowned the winner. But even as their fates hung in the air, the rest of the season nine competitors flocked to the stage one last time to sing “Again,” the 1993 single from Janet Jackson’s fifth studio album, Janet. The former “Idol” hopefuls’ collective moment in the spotlight ended shortly as Jackson herself graced the stage for a moving rendition of her new song “Nothing,” recorded for the soundtrack of Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too.” With her hair pulled back tight and her black dress flowing, Jackson proceeded to provide the audience with waves of heartfelt emotion as she sang: And the truth is that I realize/ Love is fading from your eyes/ Don’t know how it came to this/ But we can get it fixed tonight. Jackson’s sweet song didn’t stay sweet for long. As she finished her version of “Nothing,” the 44-year-old singer momentarily left the stage and was replaced by a host of male dancers wearing white shirts and black slacks. When she returned, Jackson’s dress was gone and replaced by a skintight black bodysuit, signaling the transition from the mournful beauty of “Nothing” to the fast-paced nitty-gritty of “Nasty,” Jackson’s second single from her third studio album, Control (1986). A light show of green lasers flocked the Nokia Theatre as Jackson moved aggressively against her fellow dancers, all of whom finished the performance sans shirts. Although significantly more clothed than her stagemates, Jackson was clearly just as thrilled as the dancers as she warmly waved and blew kisses to both the audience and the judges’ table at the end of her performance. Ellen DeGeneres Signs Internet Sensation Greyson Chance To New Label

Twelve-year-old who covered Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ helps launch Ellen’s eleveneleven. By Gil Kaufman Ellen DeGeneres Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. No one’s life is moving faster than that of 12-year-old YouTube sensation Greyson Chance , who has gone from an unknown middle-schooler to a worldwide sensation in just a few weeks thanks to his masterful viral cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.” On Wednesday (May 26), “American Idol” judge and talk-show queen Ellen DeGeneres revealed that she’s launching a new record label, eleveneleven, and her first signing will be Chance. According to an announcement from her spokesperson, the musical prodigy from Edmond, Oklahoma will join Ellen on Wednesday’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” where just a few weeks ago he got props from Gaga herself for his emotional solo piano cover of her hit single. Like his 20 million other fans, DeGeneres spotted Chance on YouTube performing the song at a sixth grade music festival (back when it only had 10,000 views) and then invited him to reprise the performance on her May 13 show, when he got a special call from Gaga. “Greyson … inspired me to start a record label called eleveneleven. He is my first artist and we are making a record together,” said DeGeneres in the announcement. Chance will perform one of his original songs, “Broken Hearts,” on Wednesday’s show. The preteen has already secured one of the most high-profile management teams in the music business in Guy Oseary, Madonna’s manager, and Troy Carter, Gaga’s handler, who have agreed to co-manage the sixth grader. DeGeneres, an avowed music (and dance) fan who started her first year on the “Idol” panel amid questions about her musical expertise, said she will continue to use her daytime talker as a platform to discover new artists for the label. The move comes at a pivotal time, as Wednesday night’s “Idol” finale marks the final appearance by original panelist and lead judge Simon Cowell, whose long tenure as a music executive and label runner will leave the judges’ table lacking someone with that experience. On Wednesday’s show, both Chance and DeGeneres will talk about how quickly the record deal and signing have come about. “I’m so excited to have you back,” the host said in the pretaped interview, according to a transcript released as part of the announcement. “This is moving so fast. When I first met you, I said things are going to change. Now [the hits] are over 30 million views. How are you feeling about it all?” Chance responds, “It’s crazy thinking about 30 million people. It just makes me happy. It really just hasn’t sunken in yet.

Lee DeWyze’s ‘Everybody Hurts’: Behind The ‘American Idol’ Cover

Simon Cowell calls the R.E.M. tune ‘a brilliant choice of song’ for DeWyze. By Eric Ditzian Lee DeWyze performs on “Idol” on May 25 Photo: Fox After a tepid opening performance that left the “American Idol” judges less than impressed, Lee DeWyze bounced back with an inspired take on R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” during Tuesday night’s (May 25) performance finale. It seemed like an odd, potentially sleep-inducing choice when Ryan Seacrest introduced the tune, but the 24-year-old stepped up to the mic with his guitar and immediately made clear that this performance would be different, and far better, than his first one (a second stab at Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” from “Idol Gives Back” week ). There was genuine emotion on his face and in his voice as he sang, “Everybody cries/ And everybody hurts.” The track is from R.E.M.’s 1992 effort, Automatic for the People, which reached as high as #2 on the Billboard albums chart. The melancholy song is perhaps best remembered for the band’s music video, directed by Jake Scott. Filmed on a San Antonio freeway, the video shows the band driving along until they come to a standstill in a massive traffic jam alongside other drivers. Their thoughts begin to flash across the screen as subtitles. “Nobody can see me,” thinks one woman. “They’re going to miss me,” thinks a young boy. It’s depressing stuff, no doubt, but DeWyze’s rendition was an altogether more uplifting take. And the judges dug it, despite the singer’s occasional pitch problems. “What makes you great as a performer is that you’re emotionally accessible and that I can feel every word that you’re saying and that you’re telling a story,” Kara DioGuardi declared. Simon Cowell agreed, albeit with a not insignificant caveat. “I thought that was a brilliant choice of song for you,” he said. “You went a little bit off melody at parts. What I’m feeling from you tonight, Lee, and I understand this, is you’re nervous. You’ve got another song to come, and I think you’ve really got to understand the importance of what this night can do in terms of changing your life.” What did you think of Lee’s “Everybody Hurts”?
