The American Music Awards 2011 was held last night with Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez all scooping up gongs. Swift, 21, nabbed the best artist and album and later scored artist of the year. Adorable Nicki Minaj opened the show at the Nokia Theater with David Guetta as they performed Superbass. Minaj jokes that mentor Lil Wayne should ‘move to the side and let me win’ at the American Music Awards. By Kara Warner Nicki Minaj and Pitbull Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Whether they had a heads-up or not, when Nicki Minaj and Pitbull unveiled the nominees for the 39th annual American Music Awards on Tuesday (October 11), it was obvious they were both pleased to read the other’s name off the list. Minaj is nominated for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album, while Pitbull picked up nods for Favorite Latin Music Artist and Favorite Pop or Rock Male Artist. When MTV News caught up with the nominees immediately following the announcement, they weren’t shy about their hopes for bringing home the big awards come November 20, when the AMAs air live on ABC. “It’s an honor to be here with the kind of caliber of artists here,” Pitbull said of fellow nominees Justin Bieber , Bruno Mars , Enrique Iglesias and Jennifer Lopez . “Me, I come to the awards shows and I just learn, I watch everyone, I see how they handle their performances and hopefully grab a couple things and apply it to my career. So to be here nominated and to also be performing at the AMAs, I want to thank you.” The “Give Me Everything” singer also promised he’ll do his best to top his VMA performance when he takes the AMA stage. “That [VMA performance] was definitely a lot of fun. It’s hard to get 60 women from Miami on a plane after they were partying the night before and bring that vibe out there,” he joked. “But that’s definitely what we’re looking for: We’re looking for a lot of energy, something very sexy, sophisticated, powerful — and get ready.” With regard to Miss Minaj’s chances at victory, she’s nominated in both categories with Young Money boss Lil Wayne, so we wanted to know if there will be any friendly wagering going on beforehand. “I don’t know. Now, Method Man has grown into one of hip-hop’s most beloved MCs. He isn’t known to do a ton of interviews, but on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, Mr. Meth will chop it up with Sway on “RapFix Live.” In 1993, the Wu-Tang Clan seemingly came out of nowhere, but now it’s pretty hard to imagine hip-hop without the nine-man Staten Island group. Method Man emerged as the crew’s first superstar (but certainly not the last) thanks to his standout solo Wu single and Mary J. Blige duet “All I Need.” These days, Meth is hitting the road with rappers Curren$y and Smoke DZA and working on his fifth solo album. When he hits the “RapFix” couch, fans can expect Meth to discuss his growth, Wu-Tang’s legacy and the future direction of his career. Check Styles P, Glasses Malone and Mistah Fab on last week’s “RapFix Live.” Just as Method Man evolved from local rap artist to worldwide superstar, Irv Gotti went from a little-known Queens, New York, DJ to one of music’s most successful executives. After spearheading the career of 1990s rap breakout Mic Geronimo, Irv raised his stock by helping Jay-Z, DMX and Ja Rule all land deals at Def Jam Records in the mid- to late ’90s. As a producer, Irv has crafted hits for Jay, DMX and Ja, as well as Jennifer Lopez, Ashanti and Foxy Brown. Things went sour when Gotti’s Murder Inc. record label was put on trial by the federal government for money laundering, and though Irv and his brother Chris were found not guilty in December 2005, the label never quite regained its footing. Through it all, Gotti has remained one of the industry’s most electric personalities and premier hitmakers. There is no telling what Irv will reveal when he hits the “RapFix” couch. ‘It’s really chilled out and relaxed,’ actress says of film’s New Zealand set. By Kara Warner Evangeline Lilly Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Even though the big-screen adaptation of “The Hobbit” is based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s beloved book, everyone knows the movie version won’t be an exact replica and that there will be a few surprises in store when the first film hits theaters next year. One of those surprises director Peter Jackson already announced is the addition of actress Evangeline Lilly, playing the newly created role of Woodland Elf Tauriel . MTV News had a couple of minutes with the actress at the premiere of her new film “Real Steel” on Sunday night, and we snuck in a few “Hobbit” questions, asking for a progress update on the elf fight training she endured for the role. “Elf fighting, let me just say something, recovering from labor is like recovering from a full-body injury, and I didn’t realize to what extent that was true until I started training for elf fighting,” revealed Lilly, who gave birth to her first child in May. “My hips don’t move like they used to move, my back doesn’t move like it used to move, my shoulders are sore every day. But it’s fun.” The former “Lost” actress said she’s also enjoying the “chilled out” atmosphere of filming in New Zealand, as well as being a part of yet another male-dominated cast. “It’s kind of, like, my M.O.,” Lilly said about being one of few women on set. ” ‘Lost’ was a boys club, ‘The Hurt Locker’ was a boys club, [‘Real Steel’] was a boys club, and now ‘The Hobbit’ is a boys club. So I’m used to it. … It’s really chilled out and relaxed, and everyone is really down to earth and supportive.” Finally, we asked Lilly if she’d been able to glean any words of wisdom from Jackson’s previous leading-lady elves, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel and Liv Tyler as Arwen in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. “I wish! I would love to talk to those women, and they’re two women who I deeply admire,” she said. “Cate Blanchett is in this film, and I missed her; we didn’t cross paths. She was filming before I got there and was gone by the time I arrived. “But the good thing is, I tried not to copy their performances,” she added. “I really wanted to have something original, so I intentionally didn’t go back and watch ‘Rings’ for that reason. Jay-Z plans to return home to Brooklyn, New York, after the brand-new Barclays Center arena opens in September 2012 and perform a strong of concerts to celebrate. The Daily News is reporting that Hov will perform eight shows next fall at Barclays. The rapper appeared live from the arena’s construction site for an interview with local Fox 5’s “Good Day New York” on Monday (September 26) to talk about the performances. He also formally announced that the New Jersey Nets will officially be known as the Brooklyn Nets when the NBA team moves into the arena next year. “It’s great,” Hov said of the move to BK. “I have a reason to come to Brooklyn often, which is fantastic for me because this is my foundation.” Jay started out as an underground rapper in the borough’s Marcy Projects back in the 1980s and once lived in the area’s 560 State Street. Hov, of course, went from rap star to music mogul to fashion designer to minority owner of the NBA Nets. So when Jay and Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov bring the team to Brooklyn, who better to christen Barclays than Hov himself? “I’m going to open the building with a concert — or a couple of concerts, actually,” he said, without actually confirming the number of shows. It’s going to be more than about basketball; it’s an entertainment arena.” The “Empire State of Mind” performer also noted that the new sports and entertainment complex has already created jobs and will continue to create jobs once it is opened. Critics say the ‘found-footage’ film requires a suspension of disbelief to truly work. The flick is just the latest to cash in on the found-footage premise made popular in 1999’s “The Blair Witch Project,” but it is the first to bring that filmmaking style to outer space.
