‘Dancing With The Stars’ Increases Security For Bristol Palin

Security tightened after reports of ‘a threatening letter containing white powder’ was received by the show. By MTV News staff Bristol Palin Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images The first part of the “Dancing With the Stars” season finale on Monday night was intense and contentious before the performances even began. According TMZ , security at the show had to be heightened after a white powder was discovered at CBS Studios in Los Angeles late on Friday. Sources at the show said that it appeared as though controversial contestant Bristol Palin was the intended target. “The L.A.P.D., L.A. City and FBI Hazardous Materials officials responded to a report of a threatening letter containing white powder,” the FBI told TMZ. Though the Los Angeles Police Department determined that the substance turned out to be talcum powder, that didn’t stop the producers of the show from being on high alert. According to a report at Popeater , security was tightened all around the studio, especially surrounding Palin. “Everyone is on high alert,” a source told gossip reporter Rob Shuter. “It’s like a scene from ‘The Bodyguard,’ with Bristol playing the leading lady.” Monday night’s episode went off without any reported security incidents. As far as the scoring is concerned, Palin finished in third place behind “Dirty Dancing” actress Jennifer Grey and Disney star Kyle Massey. The winner will be announced live on the show on Tuesday night (November 23). Palin has been the center of a great deal of controversy over the past few weeks, as she has remained on the show despite scoring significantly lower than many of her fellow competitors. Her continued survival has inspired talk of conspiracies involving Tea Party ballot-stuffing. There was even a bizarre incident involving a man in Wisconsin who shot his television in a rage after learning of Palin’s advancement to the “Dancing With the Stars” finale last week. ‘The Town’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics heap praise on the ‘palpable authenticity’ of Ben Affleck’s Boston crime drama and applaud performances by Jon Hamm, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner. By Eric Ditzian Slaine, Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner and Owen Burke in “The Town” Photo: Warner Bros. Who could have predicted, around the time an afro’d Ben Affleck was whipping ’70s slackers with a wooden paddle, that the guy would morph into a serious and respected director? A lot has changed since 1993’s “Dazed and Confused.” Three years ago, Affleck delivered “Gone Baby Gone,” an impressive and surprising first directorial effort that earned Melissa Leo an Oscar nod. His sophomore feature, the crime drama “The Town,” is attracting early Oscar buzz after debuting at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month. On top of its critical praise, the film is looking to compete with Emma Stone’s teen-friendly “Easy A” for this weekend’s box-office crown. Not bad work for a guy who once had a reputation for being a beer-pounding meathead. Here’s what the critics are saying about “The Town.” The Story “Affleck has cast himself in ‘The Town’s’ lead role of Doug MacRay, a native of Boston’s tough Irish Charlestown neighborhood, which as an opening title card informs us, has produced more bank and armored car robberies than any place in the United States. Doug and his best friend, Jem (Jeremy Renner), are lifelong members of one of Charlestown’s most notorious and successful crews, a team that methodically goes about its thuggish business with a combination of workaday professionalism and swift, vicious violence. When the guys rob a bank and take a manager hostage, the episode sparks a series of events that leads Doug to question whether he’s ready to leave Charlestown’s tribal life of murder and mayhem. Meanwhile, he’s being pursued by an FBI agent (Jon Hamm) who’s determined to make the choice for him.” — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post The Director “Affleck also seems more confident and at ease in the director’s chair this time around and less like the actor with something to prove. The film’s palpable authenticity is less self-conscious than it was in ‘Gone Baby Gone,’ and Affleck is able to create a strong enough sense of verisimilitude to allow us to buy into the film’s unlikely premise.” — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times The Performances “Renner and Hamm play stock characters, but their performances elevate the roles to something more. (Renner, as he proved in “The Hurt Locker,” is an especially convincing psycho.) [Rebecca] Hall is a fantastic actress, good in everything she does. She portrays perfectly the confusion and vulnerability of someone violated, as well as the hope one might find in a budding relationship. Of course, we know more than she does, which makes it all the more heartbreaking. But Affleck is the center of the film. His Doug is, in some respects, rather like Affleck – the director of the elaborate heists, as well as a performer in them…. It’s a measured, strong performance, certainly one of Affleck’s best. Perhaps he can credit his director.” — Bill Goodykoontz, The Arizona Republic The Dissenters “There’s a decent movie in ‘The Town,’ though this adaptation of the Chuck Hogan novel ‘Prince of Thieves’ stretches out to a misjudged 130 minutes. Two hours plus change isn’t long, really. Plenty of films, and not just epics, justify three or more hours. Here, though, just when the screws should tighten, we get another leisurely dialogue scene, and hammy inevitables, such as the protagonist, played by Affleck, telling his less stable partner in crime, played by Jeremy Renner of ‘The Hurt Locker’: ‘Ya been like a brutha to me.’ ” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune The Final Word “Affleck nails the rhythms of coexistence between neighborhood crooks and regular Joes. His instincts are also right in casting Renner in the role of Jem, the local baddie with a short fuse, and letting the effortlessly magnetic actor steer the pace of the action, hinting at danger even when Jem’s just nursing a brew. With the thrum of unromanticized eff-’em he brings to the part, Renner supplies the jolt that keeps Affleck on his toes, both as an actor and as a director. ‘The Town’ is the good work of a guy on a path of discovery, with Boston as the artist’s own Freedom Trail.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly Check out everything we’ve got on “The Town.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . 30 Seconds To Mars Caught In ‘Glitter Bomb’ On Way To VMAs

Best Rock Video winners found themselves strewn in glitter when arriving at the VMAs Sunday night. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars arrives at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage If anyone thought that 30 Seconds to Mars ‘ partial re-creation of their VMA-winning video, “Kings and Queens,” when they entered the big show’s white carpet would prove to be the most dangerous part of the band’s appearance on Sunday night, they were wrong. When MTV News caught up with the band as they hit the white carpet, frontman Jared Leto explained that they had not only braved L.A. traffic for their entrance, they also endured an explosion of sorts. “We were in the middle of a glitter bomb. The entrance was fun and chaotic and crazy.”

Lady Gaga’s VMA Meat Dress: Style Experts Weigh In!

‘Too bad she didn’t wear it with a grill,’ Nylon ‘s Faran Krentcil quips By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Lady Gaga wore several very interesting outfits to the VMAs on Sunday night. While she went glam in two creations (one by Alexander McQueen and one by Giorgio Armani), she was more grisly in her meat dress, shoes, bag and hat, designed by Franc Fernandez and put together by her frequent stylist, Nicola Formichetti. The look had the fashion world buzzing by Monday morning, spawning blog headlines such as, “Was it offensive or awesome?” “Too bad she didn’t wear it with a grill,” Nylon digital director Faran Krentcil told MTV News in an e-mail about the gutsy design that echoes the bikini Gaga wore on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan. Kelly Cutrone was all about the look. “I don’t get it what’s the beef with Gaga — Gaga is the Queen of the Universe, and no one should say anything negative about her or they will be attacked by her millions of fans,” the PR maven and star of “The City” told MTV News. “I am happy to see her looking so healthy and to see she put a little extra meat on!” Meanwhile, TV personality and “Telephone” co-star Jai Rodriguez commented that Gaga is creating a professional challenge for him. “Well, I am currently playing a character where the script says, ‘Take it a step further than Gaga would,’ ” he explained. “I’m no longer sure that’s possible after last night’s dinner frock.” Food was certainly on other fashion-minded folks’ minds. “It’s creepy and amazing at the same time, but I know what I won’t be eating today,” Fashion Critic wrote on RedCarpet-FashionAwards.com . Taylor Swift, Kanye West Have Critics Debating VMAs Again

The media weighs in on what ‘Innocent’ and ‘Runaway’ are saying about last year’s incident. By Paul Cantor Taylor Swift and Kanye West at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images/ WireImage Oscar Wilde once wrote, “Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.” Taylor Swift definitely got that memo. At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, she seemed to be forgiving someone, maybe Kanye West , as she crooned, “Who you are is not what you did. … You’re still an innocent.” Kanye, who apologized to Swift via Twitter earlier this month, seemed to be acknowledging his wrongdoing in the lyrics of his new song, “Runaway.” Though the pair didn’t appear onstage together on Sunday night, as some hoped, many in the media took the opportunity to weigh in on whether the evening’s performances had settled the score between them. “She seems to have forgiven him,” Jennifer Armstrong wrote in Entertainment Weekly. “She looked gorgeous, as she is wont to do, but, um, the actual song was a pretty opaque.” Kanye’s performance was looked upon more favorably. “It was a complete victory,” EW ‘s Brad Wete wrote, “addressing his character flaws and acknowledging public opinion without relinquishing any of his power.” Spin ‘s Steve Kandell thinks the two stars reluctantly met somewhere in the middle. “Kanye implored a toast to the douche bags and jerkoffs, among whom he undoubtedly counts himself, albeit with reservations,” he wrote. “She thinks he isn’t what he did, but he’s putting the lie to that — no, I am that, it’s just a shame you got in the crossfire. But, to paraphrase another great poet of the VMA era, he’s not that innocent.” Over at The New York Times, Jon Caramanica wrote of West, “Wearing a red suit, he looked amateurish and vulnerable, and also affecting. At the end, Mr. West’s knowing, bombastic humility won.” With respect to Taylor Swift, Caramanica continued, “Ms. Swift — a victim, but no na

Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ Director Recalls Video’s ‘Explosion’

Francis Lawrence-directed clip took home Video of the Year at VMAs. By Adam Rosenberg Lady Gaga at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images As the top-nominated artist at Sunday night’s 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , pop sensation Lady Gaga’s “little monsters” were tuned in to witness her triumphs — and they weren’t disappointed. Gaga took home eight Moonmen, including the evening’s top prize for Video of the Year . Director Francis Lawrence was also honored for his work on “Bad Romance,” though even with work for artists like Britney Spears, Will Smith and Aerosmith behind him, he admitted that nothing he’s done compares with the fervor generated by the night’s top-winning video. “I’ve been doing it a long time, but I’ve never really experienced an explosion with a video like this, where people so eagerly awaited it and it blew up on YouTube instantly,” he explained. “For a while, until the Justin Bieber video came out , it was the most-viewed video on YouTube.” Lawrence admitted that he would love to work with Gaga again, though his increased focus in recent years on Hollywood features, such as “I Am Legend” or the upcoming Robert Pattinson/ Reese Witherspoon-starring adaptation “Water for Elephants” leaves his schedule pretty packed. “I haven’t [heard from her], because I pretty much became unavailable right after [the ‘Bad Romance’] shoot,” he said. “But if she had a new song and wanted to do something, I would do it in a second. She was really fun to work with.” Lawrence’s interest in working with Gaga again can largely be credited to the pop star’s own passion for a well-made music video, a fact that is evident in all of her work. “She loves the art form of music videos and she is a real creative partner and has great ideas and really cool and unique tastes. She has a great team working with her as well, helping build really fantastic things that she wears,” he explained. “She works hard, she shows up on time and she’s pretty spontaneous… it was great.” “Bad Romance” is an excellent example of this. Lawrence and Gaga each had their own ideas for how the video ought to look. They met, discussed it and collaborated to produce a shared vision, one that incorporated ideas from both sides. Even when the plan changed, there was still a clear idea of what to do and how to do it. “Originally I was gonna shoot [‘Bad Romance’] in New York and we were gonna shoot it on location. There were more exteriors and things like that,” Lawrence said. “And then because of budgetary restraints and because of her schedule, we moved it to Los Angeles and the setting changed and it all just became that one interior space, but the basic idea and the concept of the video stayed pretty much the same.” On those “budgetary restraints,” Lawrence freely admits that times have changed. “Years ago, when I was really making [music videos], before I was making movies, budgets would be over a million dollars,” he said. “Bad Romance” featured no product placement, but he said the reason we see such things in music videos these days is that it allows for bigger budgets — which makes the Gaga video all the more impressive. “It was a two-day shoot,” he said. “We spent two 14-hour days shooting.” Were you happy “Bad Romance” took home Video of the Year? ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Vinny Wants To Meet Selena Gomez ‘If She’s 18’

Vinny tries to make a date with the Disney star at the VMAs. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Selena Gomez attends the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage The VMAs are a place for celebrities to meet up or perhaps meet for the first time. For instance, Justin Bieber got the chance to catch up with pals Katy Perry and Rihanna. So, when MTV News caught up with Vinny from “Jersey Shore” on the VMA white carpet, we asked who he wanted to meet at the big show. He told us he had his sights set on one Disney princess. ” Selena Gomez ,” Vinny said, quickly adding, “if she’s 18.” Lucky for Vinny, Gomez turned 18 earlier this year. However, Vinny may not be happy to hear Gomez’s reaction to his flirtatious advances. “I am [a big ‘Jersey Shore’ fan],” she said. When told that the “Jersey Shore” star wanted to meet her “if she’s 18,” she replied, “Tonight, I’m not 18! My mom would kill me! I will say I am a very big fan though, a very big fan, and I do look forward to meeting them, but that’s as far as it goes.” While Vinny’s dream to meet Gomez may not have come to fruition, an exclusive clip from this season of “Jersey Shore” debuted during the VMAs, and it seems that Snooki and Angelina don’t share the same polite admiration for each other that Selena and Vinny have for one another. In the clip, drama ensues after a guy Snooki brought home seems to gravitate to or get hit on by Angelina. Snooki explains that it’s not the first time she and Angelina have both pursued the same guy. The spat prompts Angelina to vent her feelings about the entire cast. “I don’t give a f— about anybody in this house. All of yous in this house are f—ing fake. And I want you all to know that I can’t stand any of yous. Fake mother—-ers, all of you.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Will.I.Am Responds To VMA ‘Blackface’ Criticism

MC says costume for Nicki Minaj pre-show performance wasn’t meant to be racially charged. By Mawuse Ziegbe Will.I.Am and Nicki Minaj perform during the 2010 VMA Preshow Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Nicki Minaj made a colorful MTV Video Music Awards debut when she rocked the pre-show in a bubblegum-pink wig and shimmery purple catsuit. But it was the hue of her onstage collaborator Will.I.Am ‘s getup that really got viewers talking. After Minaj and her dancers took the stage decked out in Jetsons-chic bodysuits for her smash “Your Love,” Will joined Minaj for a rendition of their cheery hip-pop track “Check It Out.” When the Black Eyed Peas frontman hopped onstage, ushered in by two plumes of thick white fog, the MC was rocking all-black everything, with the exception of a few Barbie-pink accents, including fingerless gloves, a shiny midnight-colored plastic hairpiece and jet-black face paint. Apparently some viewers took offense to the producer’s outfit, especially the dark makeup, which, to some fans, was reminiscent of the antiquated, racially charged practice of blackface. After fans blasted the rapper online, he took to Twitter to defend the look as artistic expression and not an embrace of the controversial maquillage typically used to lampoon African-Americans. “1st. just because I where all black including head mask as expression and emphasize my outfit, it shouldn’t be looked at as racial,” Will tweeted . “Let go of the past. there are far more important things 2 bark about. (Jobs, health, education) not a black man wearing all black everything.” The Peas frontman insisted the face paint was a harmless costume choice and that fans concerned with the image Will’s look projected should focus on larger issues. “Are you guys serious? my outfit set ‘black people back 100 yrs’ choose your twits wisely,” Will typed . “No education sets people back, no jobs, bad health.” What did you think of Will’s outfit? Were you offended by the look? Let us know in the comments. ‘World of Jenks’ Star Recalls Fighting, Making Up With Maino

‘Literally after that fight, we were cracking up,’ Andrew Jenks says of tense moment with the rapper. By Nuzhat Naoreen “World of Jenks” star Andrew Jenks Photo: MTV News There aren’t too many people who can boast about getting to live a day in the life of a rap star … or, for that matter, getting attacked by one. In the debut episode of his new show, ” World of Jenks ,” which aired right after the 2010 Video Music Awards on Sunday, star Andrew Jenks got to experience both. In the premiere of the documentary-style series, . He moves in with him, parties with him and even meets his son. Everything goes smoothly, until a night out when Jenks starts questioning Maino about some of his life choices. Maino doesn’t take too kindly to the questions, and things quickly get heated. Jenks talked to MTV News about why he thinks Maino attacked him and how the two got over the fight. “When I was spending time with Maino and before I had really gotten to know him, really understood his entire story, I was starting to judge him unfairly, thinking that maybe he wasn’t being the best example he could be to a lot of the youth that looked up to him,” said Jenks. “I think he got really offended by that because I didn’t know where he came from. I didn’t know the struggle of his life and I didn’t know why he acted the way that he did.” Jenks said the confrontation was beneficial, in that it led him to realize that there was a lot more about Maino’s life he needed to experience. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt. “He’s big,” Jenks said. “People don’t realize Maino is a big guy, so it hurt. If you look after he choked me a little bit, you see my neck is really red because he is a forceful man.” Even though it was a rough moment, the two soon made up. “I developed enough of a relationship with him at that point where I knew it was a scuffle, it was late at night and that we would get over it,” he explained. In fact, the two ended up partying together for the rest of the night. “Literally after that fight, we were cracking up. We hung out that night [and] it was just like, it was a heated moment and we both came to an agreement that I needed to see where he was from and we carried on with the night,” said Jenks, adding that no apologies were necessary. “You know, it was kind of like we’re two dudes; we don’t need to talk about it. We already decided I’m going to go see where you’re from and that will be the best way to reconcile what just happened.” Jenks also shared that Maino caught the program before it aired and loved it. “I showed him the episode a few days ago, and we were at a restaurant. It was funny because it was this really quiet restaurant, and it was, like, very nice. Everyone was quietly eating their dinner. And he was like, ‘Yo, can I see the episode?’ And I had my laptop, so I took it out, and he put on headphones and he was watching it and he was just like, ‘Ohh! Oh, wow!’ He was just yelling in the middle of this restaurant going, ‘Ah sh–, Jenks, that was crazy,’ like, ‘I can’t believe you got that.’ ” The reaction was just what Jenks was looking for. “At the end [Maino] was like, ‘That was me, that’s my life, you got it in 20 minutes.’ That was just a weight off my shoulders, because I felt like we really accomplished something and that the guy we were following said, ‘You got it, man. That’s my life right there. You depicted it.’ ” ” World of Jenks ” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
