Katy Perry Accepts Her ‘Own Skin’ In ‘Part Of Me’ Film

During ‘MTV First’ premiere of ‘Wide Awake,’ Katy talks about upcoming documentary, which shows her at her most unpolished. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: Katy Perry may have closed the book on Teenage Dream with her new “Wide Awake” video , but next month, she’ll wrap that book up (and put a tidy little bow on top) with “Part of Me,” the 3-D documentary that not only captures her meteoric 2011, but her unheralded early days as well. “The movie is all of last year; I had these two guys from London come out [to film], and I said, ‘Will you just capture everything that goes on?’ ” Perry told MTV News’ Sway Calloway during the “MTV First” premiere of the “Wide Awake” video. “Because I felt 2011 would be an important year for me; you could feel it, like tremors of an earthquake. I didn’t know what I was going to catch, but I was going on this extreme tour, playing venues I never dreamed I’d play … I was either going to go bankrupt, have a breakdown or have the greatest success of my life; and I’m sure I did a lot of those things. But we caught all of it and put it together in a film.” Perry wrote “Wide Awake” specifically for the film — the video ends with her triumphantly ascending to the stage during her California Dreams Tour — so it’s little wonder that the clip also features plenty of nods to her past . “Part of Me” also tells the story of how she rose from an unknown to one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, and watching it now, Katy can’t help but be amazed at how eerily prescient she was in her younger days. “There’s some backstory of how I got here, because a lot of people have heard about where I come from, but there’s actual footage … the movie, when it opens up, it’s me at 18 talking about how I want all these things, like, all the things I have now and achieving my dreams,” she said. “But then I’m kind of biting my lip going, ‘But then there’s all this responsibility.’ And then it cuts to me at the arena with thousands of people, essentially being a boss of sorts, a CEO, having to give out orders; it’s pretty crazy.” And unlike many other high-profile docs, this one is delightfully unpolished. There are moments where Perry appears unguarded and unfiltered — which, to her, is one of the most important aspects of the film. It not only documents her rise to fame, but her acceptance of herself too. It’s called “Part of Me” for a reason, after all. “There’s some scenes that I know people will screenshot and be like, ‘Oh, she looks like a fat cow with zits.’ But I put those in there because that’s a part of me, that’s reality, and I’m OK with that now,” she explained. “It’s been a process of learning it’s OK, and I’m accepting of my own skin, but I think it’s important for young kids to see that you don’t have to be perfect in order to achieve your dreams, because I think that the world has this strange, skewed perception of successful people, that they’re just so perfectly made up, and they have all these possessions that make them who they are, and that’s not at all how I got here; I came from nothing, I didn’t have anything. “I just had a dream, and I worked very hard at achieving that dream,” she continued. “And that’s exactly what it takes; it takes a lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifice, a lot of focus, and hopefully that will open the door for you. But it’s not about being perfect.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Katy Perry: Part of Me.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Katy Perry’s ‘Wide Awake’ Video: Through The Looking Glass

Perry’s fairy-tale clip closes the book on her Teenage Dream story and finds her living happily ever after. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in “Wide Awake” Photo: Katy Perry certainly isn’t the first artist to get all Lewis Carroll-ian with a video — Tom Petty’s iconic “Don’t Come Around Here No More” certainly springs to mind — though, in some ways, her brand-new “Wide Awake” clip (which borrows from Carroll’s “Through the Looking Glass” book) does manage to cover new territory — namely by transforming the fantasy trope into a bit of an autobiography. It makes sense. After all, it’s not exactly a stretch to call the past two years of her life — which began with the release of her Teenage Dream album in summer 2010 and concludes with her upcoming “Part of Me” 3-D film — surreal. She’s one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, gone through a very public divorce, and become the rather unwilling target of the tabloids — and in some way, you get the feeling she’d like nothing more than to return to simpler times (singles sales intact, obvs). And all those things show up, in one form or another, in “Wide Awake,” which begins at the very end of her “California Gurls” music video shoot and takes her literally through the looking glass to a world that is basically as fantastical as her actual existence. She is trapped inside a labyrinth. She discovers her lost innocence in the form of a young girl. She is hounded by hellish paparazzi. She finds her Prince Charming, who tellingly crosses his fingers behind his back before going in for a kiss. And even more tellingly, Perry reaches back and decks him. In short, you don’t exactly need an advanced degree in film theory to realize that the video is one long symbolic ride through her voyage to superstardom (except for the two hospital attendants/minotaurs; I’m not sure what they represent). The squeeze of fame, the rose-colored nostalgia, the invasions of privacy and the betrayals of trust: It’s all here and all ready for the armchair analysts. Of course, Perry has made it very clear that this new video is the final chapter of the fairy tale that was her Teenage Dream years. That she doesn’t seem to be entirely happy with all of it is about as telling as her socking Prince Charming — after all, no one ever said fame was easy, or the ride to the top wouldn’t be a bumpy one. And, at their very core, most fairy tales are actually pretty terrifying things. But with “Wide Awake,” Perry lets it be known that she’s made it through unscathed and on top of the world. And if that’s not a happy ending, well, then I don’t know what is. What did you think of Katy’s latest video? Let us know in the comments! Russell Brand Says Divorce From Katy Perry ‘Did Work Out’

‘You just have to have acceptance of things,’ he explains about his split from the singer. By Jocelyn Vena Russell Brand and Katy Perry Photo: Charley Gallay/ WireImage In a recent interview for his upcoming Broadway adaptation “Rock of Ages,” Russell Brand was also asked about his split from his pop star ex, Katy Perry . Sitting down with ITV1’s “Lorraine” show he said that it “did work out in a way,” adding that “you just have to have acceptance of things. She is a person that I love, but now this is a new time.” The couple announced their divorce in December 2011 , after one year of marriage. And while both the actor and the singer have been busy with a number of projects, he added, “I suppose a divorce is difficult isn’t it, because of the admin. There’s a lot of admin.” Brand’s feelings about his split from Perry mirror those he shared with Ellen DeGeneres when he was on her talk show last month. “I still love her as a human being,” the comedian said. “But sometimes when you’re in a relationship, I suppose it doesn’t work out, does it? But that doesn’t mean I regret it or anything. I was very happy to be married with her. She’s such a beautiful human being and I just have only love and positivity for her. “You can’t absolutely make everything the way you want it to be in life,” he added. “Sometimes things are just different and then you have to just move with that and try and remain in contact with what is beautiful about yourself and with each other with any situation.” Like Brand, Perry will also come to a theater near you this summer. Her 3-D concert film, “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” hits theaters on July 5. In footage teased from it, Perry is expected to touch on not only her rise to fame, but also her personal relationships, including her divorce from Brand . ‘Katy Perry: Part Of Me’: Watch An Exclusive Clip Now!

Pop star addresses her religious upbringing and shuts down her ‘good-girl-gone-bad’ image In ‘Part of Me’ excerpt. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in “Katy Perry: Part of Me” Photo: Paramount Pictures Katy Perry came on the pop scene in 2008 with her tongue-in-cheek “I Kissed a Girl.” Quickly after the song became a summer staple, Perry’s conservative religious upbringing was put in the spotlight. In our exclusive sneak peek of her 3-D concert film “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” the singer’s family opens up about their initial reactions to the not-so-religious track. And from the looks of the clip, the news was met with shock. “When Katy decided that ‘I Kissed a Girl’ was going to be a her first single, I said, ‘Have you told mom and dad?’ ” her sister Angela recalls in the clip. “And she said, ‘No, but can you?’ ” When they found out, her pastor parents, Mary and Keith Hudson, had some minor reservations about how it would affect them. “I was a little concerned, yeah, ’cause I thought my ministry after 30-something years is over,” Keith recalls in the film. “But, you know what? Never had a problem.” And Katy too assures that, despite what fans may have thought, the track didn’t cause strife between the singer and her family. “I think people love the idea of ‘a good girl gone bad’,” the singer, whose real last name is Hudson, explains in the film. “And they think my parents have disowned me, but that’s not the story at all.” In addition to the confessions, the film also includes behind-the-scenes moments from her colorful California Dreams Tour. During one of those candid moments, Perry teases her parents about “I Kissed a Girl” when they visit her backstage, joking that it’s their favorite song of hers. “Katy Perry: Part of Me” opens July 5 . In addition to the film, ahead of its release, Perry will premiere her clip for her dreamy ballad, “Wide Awake.” The video will get its big premiere on June 19 on MTV. WATCH: Katy Perry’s ‘Wide Awake’ Video Sneak Peek!

Video premieres Tuesday, June 19, on MTV. By Kara Warner Katy Perry in her video for “Wide Awake” Photo: Capitol Attention, Katy Cats! Are you dying to see Katy Perry ‘s new video for her latest hit single, “Wide Awake”? We have some very good news for you in the form of a special sneak peek. Perry has just dropped a trailer for the clip, and we are happy to report that it is 82 seconds of expert teasery. The 1 minute, 22 second trailer opens in a “Secret Garden”-type setting, with a shot of the back of a young, dark-haired girl surrounded by foliage. She’s standing looking at an old table, which is covered by overgrown plants and vines. Suddenly, the debris is whisked away to reveal a dusty old book. The young girl begins turning the pages of the book, which reveal different chapters, with each one highlighted by a photo from a previous Perry video. Stills from “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.,” “Last Friday Night” and “The One That Got Away” all make for separate chapters in the book. When the girl turns the page to reveal “The Final Chapter,” we start to see pictures from “Wide Awake” that seem to indicate we’ll be whisked into a fairy tale of some sort that naturally has Perry playing our heroine and/or possible princess. The other characters and plot points involved in the tale involve a poisoned strawberry, a curious cat, Prince Charming and a young girl — the very one we’ve been watching turning the pages of the book. The teaser ends with the young girl waving at herself in the book, after which she closes it to reveal the tome’s title: “Wide Awake: The Final Chapter From Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection,” and the premiere date of the video, June 19, which we’re very happy to unveil on MTV. In addition to the film, Perry also recently shot a music video for her Teenage Dream: The Complete Confession track, “Wide Awake.” “It’s the most intimate I’ve ever been,” she told MTV News about the movie . “I mean that in a non-sexual way … I mean it in a vulnerable way. And so I’m not scared of it because I think it’s important for me, and important these days, for people to not think people in my position are perfect and that if they want to achieve this type of dream or achieve a goal that they have to be flawless, they don’t.” Are you excited for Katy Perry’s Fourth of July performance?
