T here is currently a series being filmed on the killing of Eric Garner, titled “The Fifth Boro.” But production stopped this weekend when a handful of onlookers reportedly attacked the actors filming the chokehold death scene at the exact location where Garner was killed by police on July 17, 2014. See Also: Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In Prison For Sexual Assault Conviction According to The New York Daily News , James Russo , Anthony Mangano and Mark John Jefferies , best known for his roles in “Losing Isaiah” and “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” were filming a scene on Thursday where the two white actors wrestle Jefferies to the ground. It was unclear if Jeffries plays Garner because the IMDB page for the film says he his role is a character named Drey. While filming, “a bottle came soaring onto the set, aimed at Jefferies, who said the projectile missed his feet by ‘about 8 inches.’” Jefferies told the New York Daily News, “They were just being ignorant and I don’t have time for that. We were literally about to roll and one of them threw a bottle in my direction.” Jefferies said he approached the person who threw the bottle and yelled, “If you don’t like it, you can get the F out of here.” Director Steve Stanulis, a former Staten Island cop, decided to no longer film at the location where Garner was killed. He also claimed, according to the New York Daily News, that he wasn’t aware that was the location where Garner was killed. Sounds like Stanulis and his team need to do some better research if they are recreating the controversial police killing and aren’t even aware they are at the location where he died. Source: Miami Herald / Getty A few weeks ago Vic Mensa caught the wrath of the internet when he took a subliminal jab at the late XXXTentacion’s history of domestic abuse and the fans who follow him during the 2018 BET Awards Cypher. While facts are facts sometimes fans hate hearing the negative parts of their favorite artists or celebrities especially if it’s unproven allegations. Now Pitchfork is reporting that a newly surfaced tape features the “SAD!” rapper not only talking about beating on his ex-girlfriend, but also stabbing a gang of people in her presence which helped put the fear of God in her. Recorded while in the presence of his friends around the time he was arrested in October of 2016, the tape has X breaking down what led to him assaulting his ex and why she knew he was capable of worse. “I put my source of happiness in another person, which was a mistake initially, right? But she fell through on every occasion until now. Until I started f*cking her up bruh. I started f*cking her up because she made one mistake. And from there, the whole cycle went down. Now she’s scared. That girl is scared for her life. Which I understand.” He later explained why she feared for her life stating, “I’m in the New Times for Stabbing. How many people they put in the news? They said three. It was eight. In Deerfield. She knows that. She seen this sh*t.” Pitchfork was able to get their hands on the disturbing 27-minute tape through the Miami-Dade County state attorney’s office but only made a few minutes of the recording available for public consumption. While everyone is familiar with the charges he caught for putting hands on his ex-girlfriend the stabbing incidents were news to some fans and authorities. On the tape, in addition to the threats against his ex-girlfriend, XXXTentacion also referred to a stabbing incident in Deerfield Beach, Florida, saying, “I’m on[Miami] New Times for stabbing, how many people they put in the news? They said three, it was eight.” (On January 21, 2016, a local Florida newspaper reported that police were “searching for the person who stabbed three people during a fight in Deerfield Beach.” There is no record of anyone being charged with the stabbing, but a Broward County Sheriff’s Office report from the incident states that a witness “saw an unknown black male with tattoos on his face swinging a knife in multiple directions.”) Regardless of XXXTentacion’s very troubled history he has some of the hardest ride or die fans of any artist past or present and though his comments on this tape were disturbing we’re almost certain it won’t change how his millions of followers feel about his legacy. KABOOM! A handful of bombshells were dropped on the Married At First Sight reunion special Tuesday night. For instance, one couple is expecting a child… another is no longer together… and all involved have seen their lives significantly changed by their participation in this show. We might as well start with Bobby Dodd and Danielle Bergman , right? These two basically enjoyed a perfect season, not even fighting a bit on decision day when Bobby got down on one knee and proposed to Danielle. This helped Danielle feel confident that her husband was truly in love — and the twosome told viewers yesterday that they are yet to have their first disagreement. Oh, and one more thing: DANIELLE IS PREGNANT!!!!!!!!! With their first child on the way, Bobby and Danielle confirmed that they’ll be a part of the spinoff series Married At First Sight: Happily Ever After? where they will join two other couples from the program who are expecting children. Interesting twist, huh? The news was less positive for Tristan Thompson and Mia Bally , however. As previously reported, these newlyweds have filed for divorce . And we now know why. Once the cameras stopped rolling and the season ended, Mia walked out on Tristan for showing her pictures of his ex-girlfriend. “He said I was not mentally strong or mentally tough,” Mia explained to the camera on this special episode. After the dramatic walk out, the couple decided they needed to simply dissolve their marriage, arguing on the reunionset over who initiated the split, but this is on legal record: Mia filed the paperwork. Can we at least end on a happy note with an update on Dave Flaherty and Amber Martorana ? No, actually. Amber, who is now brunette, appeared on the reunion to announce that their romance had gone sour. Amber moved out of Dave’s home after a few major fights, one of which included the unresolved issue of her previously dating one of his friends. Awkward! “He just kind of felt more like he doesn’t know if he could fall in love with me,” Amber said. “I moved out. I felt like maybe he needs more time to know if maybe I’m the person he wants.” Following the move, Dave simply couldn’t do it anymore. Amber said she tried to save the marriage because she recognized her mistakes — but Dave had no desire to even go to counseling with her. He was done. “I don’t think that we will be able to reconcile things,” Dave said. “We both hoped that it would be in a different place right now but I think that the reality is that it’s not.” This revelation made Amber feel like a failure. She said she was disappointed with herself. Even though Dave’s choice might have been predictable, she was still very upset hearing it. But, hey, at least Bobby and Danielle are having a baby! Good for them!
T he Supreme Court’s ruling Monday night that Trump’s commerce secretary doesn’t have to explain under oath his reason for adding what some say is a racist question to the 2020 Census was a major victory for the president. To perhaps no one’s surprise, Justice Clarence Thomas was reportedly among the judges’ leading voices with the dissenting opinion that overturned a lower court’s prior ruling that sided with immigrant-rights activists. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross approved the addition of a Census question that asked if the person filling out the form was an American citizen. The pushback was immediate, labeling the move as a form of racism that would simplify the targeting non-citizens Trump’s anti-immigration and pro-deportation government. A federal judge ultimately ruled Ross should be deposed over the question, but Monday night’s ruling ended any thoughts of that notion. SCOTUS stays deposition of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in citizenship question case until it decides whether to hear appeal ordering deposition. Order here: https://t.co/uau6RgtgED 1/ pic.twitter.com/ifcFSf8f6w — Michael Li (@mcpli) October 23, 2018 “Two justices – Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas – dissented in part to make clear that they would have absolved other government officials as well from what they termed an ‘inquisition,’” USA Today reported . More than two dozen cities and states filed lawsuits to try to remove the question. A trial had already been scheduled to start Nov. 5 – the day before Election Day – in New York. Monday night’s decision wasn’t a total victory for Trump. While the Supreme Court overturned the lower courts’ rulings on the Census question, “The administration’s request to temporarily block other lower court orders for the lawsuits, however, were not successful,” NPR reported . “The Supreme Court is allowing the plaintiffs’ attorneys to question Justice Department official John Gore, who leads the department’s civil rights division that the administration says needs the citizenship question to better enforce the Voting Right Act. Document requests from the plaintiffs can also move forward as the start date for the first potential trial over the citizenship question draws closer.” The ruling also paved the way for the president to further enforce his immigration laws that have disproportionately affected Black and brown non-U.S. citizens; policies that have torn families apart at the border, separating thousands of children from parents with no real plan in place to reunite them all. Trump appears to be hindering 2020 Census accuracy. Here's why it matters. https://t.co/5DqKxuE965 pic.twitter.com/uDBEBLWZww — NewsOne (@newsone) September 1, 2017 “President Trump is adding the citizenship question into his toxic stew of racist rants and draconian policies in order to stoke fear,” Sarah Brannon, a managing attorney with the ACLU, said in June. The ruling was also so crucial because the Census is used to tally an accurate headcount of people living in the U.S. But now, with the renewed threat of surveillance and deportation, it was doubtful many, if any, noncitizens would participate. Of the roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants in America, just about 600,000 of them were Black, according to the most recent statistics by the Migration Policy Institute . The consequences of not having full Census participation could be catastrophic for cities, states, businesses, households and, of course, individuals, according to the Brookings Institute. “Without an accurate Census, many states and cities will be denied the full funding they deserve and need, and the federal government will have to fly blind for a decade across a range of important areas,” the think tank wrote in a blog post last year when talk of the 2020 Census hit a fever pitch. But it was the overall racial implications for Black people in particular that were tough to ignore. NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson summed them neatly in an op-ed he wrote for NewsOne in March. The implications of an ill-prepared census on African-Americans could be devastating. @NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson @DerrickNAACP explains so we can all be aware. https://t.co/pO3o11SIZb #census2020 #Census pic.twitter.com/8Lm3FItME6 — NewsOne (@newsone) March 30, 2018 “In the 200 plus years since its first inception, the United States census has often provided a racist, biased and erroneous count of people of color in America,” Johnson wrote. “If care is not taken, the 2020 Census is gearing up to be much of the same.” Famous last words. The final path for Rick and Maggie is starting to take shape. As previously reported, both Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan are departing The Walking Dead during the first half of the current season. Sunday’s episode picked up Justin becoming a member of the undead, but all of the communities had no idea where he was. The Saviors were especially mad because they knew something happened to him, but the person was just going to get away with it. As all the communities tried to find him, Maggie noticed the reanimated version of him looking for some fine dining on the streets. Among the pool of suspects in the spate of disappearances were Daryl, Maggie, and Jadis. Daryl and Maggie have long been against the Saviors, and for a good reason. But Jadis had an alibi … or so we thought. Gabriel told the others she was him the night Justin went missing, so she could not be the one in the frame. After yet another big bust-up, Alden opened up to Rick about the Saviors feeling more at ease if they were trusted to have a firearm. Rick was not ready to reason with him and said that it was not out of the question. It was all a matter of finding out who was responsible for these disappearances. “You trust me, don’t you?” Alden said to Maggie. “How about trusting a few other people who’ve made a change?” Rick ultimately grilled Daryl about the murder, and it showed just how fraught this friendship had become. “If I’d-a killed him, I’d-a killed him in plain sight,” Daryl complained, leading to Rick claiming that they were building a better future and they had to do their best to stick to it. But Daryl had heard it all before and felt like the Saviors took a lot of their comrades from them. “But killing each other when the world already belongs to the dead, it’s not the way, not anymore,” said Rick after claiming that killing is not the way forward anymore. Gabriel continued to question whether Jadis was only with him because she wanted a cover story for all of her misdeeds. The plot thickened when Jadis returned to her former stomping grounds, and brought out a walkie-talkie and called someone. “What do you have, an A or a B?” said the man who replied. “I paid my share,” she responded After going back on forth on letters, Jadis said she would have an A by the next day. Okay then. When she returned to Gabriel she gave him the following offer: “There’s another place that’s far from here,” she said, “but if we go together, we can get there.” She was trading people for supplies for her people. But Gabriel did not want to help out and found himself knocked out. Daryl and Maggie found their way to a house that Cyndie once lived, and they found Cyndie, Bea and another girl going at it with Arat. The Saviors had murdered all of their friends and family, and that’s why they took action to take them down. After some back and forth, Maggie and Daryl allowed the women to murder Arat for his crimes. “We gave Rick’s way a chance,” she said. “It’s time to see Negan.” What will become of these characters? Hit the comments below. The Walking Dead continues Sunday on AMC. View Slideshow: The Walking Dead Season 9: What’s About to Go Down?
A s Republicans increasingly find themselves backed into the corner of their inevitable, impending losses in the Midterm elections next month, GOP candidates seeking office and re-election alike have been increasingly resorting to the single platform that has been helping their party thrive: racism-based politics of fear. The onslaught of racist political ads flooding regional airwaves underscores Republicans’ desperation to cling to power. And while culturally tone-deaf and racially insensitive ads are nothing new — remember when a John McCain TV spot manipulated Obama’s skin color to make it look darker? — this latest crop has been especially and unabashedly disrespectful, using the most damaging stereotypes to depict or refer to Black people in particular. The latest example came from Arkansas, where a radio ad released in support of Republican Congressman French Hill was in theory supposed to appeal to Black voters. But in real life, the desired effect was anything but achieved when someone decided that using stereotypically sassy Black women’s voices speaking in a dialect often-mocked by non-Blacks was the right move. This is a real radio ad currently running in Arkansas in support of Republican Congressman French Hill on radio stations targeted to the African American community. I don't even have words to describe it. pic.twitter.com/vpzt1nGPlc — (((Ben Tribbett))) (@notlarrysabato) October 18, 2018 “Honey I always told my son, don’t be messing around with that,” one voice says of dating white women and the possible consequences of being lynched because of it, evoking damaging and false imagery of an eye-popping, neck-rolling Black woman with a hand on her hip. “If you get caught, she will cry rape.” While just a radio ad, anyone remotely familiar with Diamond and Silk would easily be forgiven for confusing the voices on the ad with the embarrassing duo of Black Trump supporters who have made a living from reinforcing the same stereotypes featured in the pro-Hill spot. @HawleyMO has an almost identical ad running on a radio station in Missouri. I heard it at the barbershop JUST LAST NIGHT and I couldn’t hear the name of who paid for it. Thank you for this. https://t.co/9cpIb9w7Ny — Fredrick Doss (@FredrickDoss) October 19, 2018 Not to be outdone, the National Republican Congressional Committee released an ad last month trying to reduce New York congressional candidate Antonio Delgado , who is Black, to a “big city rapper.” While Delgado has indeed been a rapper , he is also a Harvard Law School-trained former Rhodes Scholar , by the way, making him completely qualified for public office. To add insult to injury, the right-wing propaganda tabloid New York Post referred to Delgado as a “Rappin’ Dem” in its headline on Thursday. And let’s not forget about how the Republican Governor’s Association in August featured a pair of tap-dancing feet in an attack ad on Stacey Abrams , who is battling all types of voter suppression efforts while campaigning to become Georgia’s first Black governor. For the uninitiated, the controversial imagery surrounding Black people tap dancing is rooted in racist minstrel shows and doubles down on the stereotype that Black folks can only entertain white audiences. But, of course, most importantly, tap dancing has nothing to do with Abrams’ campaign, showing the low, deceptive measures Republicans don’t mind stooping to. Never mind how Abrams’ Republican opponent, who just happens to be Georgia’s current secretary of state — the office that oversees elections — was featuring a controversial video on his website showing a Black child actor who failed to bring the acceptable government-issued voter ID to cast a ballot. Although the video was first posted in 2016, it remained on the site until Thursday. Wow. So on the SOS website #BrianKemp has an advance voting video. Take a look at who gets to vote and who doesn’t. Nice messaging, Kemp. Please just #resign already. #gapol #gagov #TeamAbrams pic.twitter.com/D4gmMeb4Cw — Anjali Enjeti (@anjalienjeti) October 18, 2018 Aside from political ads, white Republican candidates themselves have been using no uncertain terms to describe their Black opponents in coded, dog-whistled language. Ron DeSantis , who was trailing Andrew Gillum in the latest polls for the Florida governor race, has defended racism and has a lengthy, detailed history of racism . The day after Gillum secured the Democratic nomination in the race, DeSantis told Florida voters not to “monkey this up” by electing the person who could become the state’s first Black governor. Still not enough examples of how racism has permeated the 2018 election cycle? HuffPost listed more than a dozen other instances here to emphasize the tidal wave of racist “attacks made on candidates of color by their opponents.” We only defeat hate through these four letters-V.O.T.E … our lives depend on it! https://t.co/BI9rT3lgmH — NAACP (@NAACP) October 19, 2018 While the ads can’t be forgiven, they can certainly be understood, since the politics of fear worked so well for the president’s own election. And as has been shown time-and-time again, Republicans have no problem following the example of their leaders, even (especially?) if it means resorting to racism.
