P hiladelphia’s police commissioner, who’s Black, rejected a report released on Monday that said police racial bias was instrumental in the controversial arrest of two Black men at Starbucks in April. However, many studies point to implicit bias as an ongoing policing problem. SEE ALSO: Starbucks Incident Prompts Philadelphia Police Department To Finally Try De-escalation In Trespass Cases The Police Advisory Commission, comprised of a citizen oversight board, urged police officials to improve officer implicit bias training, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. “The goal for us was to help everyone understand that issues can be nuanced and tinged with race, or affected by race and racism, and the Police Department, often, is the person at the front lines of all of our issues,” said Hans Menos , executive director of the commission. That didn’t go over well with Philadelphia Commission Richard Ross , who pointed out in a statement that his department bans racially biased policing. “We can agree that biases, whether implicit or explicit, may distort the fears and perception of some citizens who call the police to report crimes,” he stated, shifting the blame to citizens who call the police for help. Starbucks also closed its stores in May for an afternoon of employee anti-bias training. Studies have determined that suspicion and fear of Black men underpin police brutality and make for disproportionate arrests. Unconsciously, white people perceive Black men as larger and more threatening than white men of the same build, according to the American Psychological Association . Stereotypes of Black men as habitual criminals and dangerous people are reinforced through the media, the American Bar Association said. A national survey found that whites overestimated the percentage of Blacks involved in burglaries, drug sales and juvenile crime by up to 30 percent. Police officers bring those attitudes with them, often unconsciously, when policing Black communities. Police departments across the nation are struggling to help their officers eliminate their bias. When Gabriella Bernard started connecting with professional photographers and catching the eye of reality show casting judges she thought all of her childhood dreams were coming true. In an exclusive interview with HelloBeautiful she opened up about what was on the other side of her childhood ambitions. “From a really young age I always wanted to be a model, ” said Bernard. Her aspirations were inspired by an aunt who saw her as a shoo-in. “She said you know you’re so slim and you have long legs and you’re gorgeous , you should be a model.” A toddler at the time Bernard asked, “What’s a model?” It wasn’t until she was watching Wendy Fitzwilliam be crowned Miss Universe that the power of representation would allow her to see herself as someone could take control of the spotlight. “Seeing Wendy Fitzwilliam win Miss Universe as a black woman , as a Black Trinidadian woman it made me believe in myself, that I could get up on a big stage and become a successful model,” she said. More than a decade later after convincing her mother that she could balance her university studies and follow her passion Bernard was fully ready to embrace her fate. However, she was disappointed to find that the experiences she was subjected to weren’t as empowering as the life she had envisioned for herself. Instead of a space where she could exercise her creativity and challenge herself she found the Caribbean modeling world to be a series of unbalanced power dynamics where people unlearned common courtesy as soon as they crossed the threshold of success. Discomfort and disillusionment were practically job requirements and as someone who was determined to speak up for herself Bernard was unqualified. “Sometimes people know that they’re doing the wrong thing and because you are speaking up against it and you are speaking up for yourself they will tell you that you’re being unprofessional you can’t be in this industry if you want to be like that. To me in Trinidad it’s like a power move that they do, that because ‘I’m such and such you need to do what I say’,” she said. Throughout the #MeToo movement women have claimed the label ‘unprofessional’ was lobbied as a threat by offenders. “That happens with photographers and designers ,” She continued. During a shoot with a photographer who touched her inappropriately she was told that she was “ruining” the shoot by shielding herself from his touches and speaking about feeling uncomfortable. “I got my makeup done for two hours and then he put a welders mask on my face and the first thing I said was ‘Why are you putting a welders mask on my face? I just spent two hours doing my makeup, like that doesn’t make any sense.” While this choice seemed strange she remained cooperative even when the photographer refused to acknowledge her questions. Moments later she had to speak up to protect herself. “I was in a bikini and a welders mask and I’m posing and then all of a sudden I feel his hands on my breasts and I jumped and I took off the mask and I’m like ‘What are you doing?’ he’s like ‘No, no you ruined the pose!’ I was like “No, but you’re touching my breast and he was like ‘Yeah but that’s because I’m fixing your top it had a crinkle’ and I was like, ‘Are you crazy?!” She credits her mother with making sure that she had a firm foundation before being placed in such a trying situation. When she wanted to start modeling at 12 her mother pleaded with her to wait out of concern for her personal safety. “She really shielded me from the industry and being in it for some time. I see why because there are perverts and had I been younger I don’t know that I would have been able to handle myself accordingly because these men use some very underhanded tricks to try and get you to sleep with them.” She understands why people don’t report such incidents but she has hope that increased transparency will lead to more women coming forward. “I think that the more that we stand up and speak up about it the more support that other people have because the fear is always ‘I don’t wanna come out and then people don’t believe me’ or ‘I don’t wanna come out and then people bash me’.” She thinks that “by all of us having a voice every single voice adds to our strength.” She was able to stand firm with predatory practices from independent entities but unfortunately, she didn’t feel as empowered on the set of Caribbean’s Next Top Model where Fitzwilliam the woman she had once idolized was now one of many people passing judgment on far more than her appearance. Constantly aware that she was there to be evaluated, and that every interaction on camera and off was apart of the competition, she was forced to try and be agreeable even when she felt like some things happening during filming were unjust. “I did experience colorism and a hint of prejudice and discrimination behind the scenes,” she said. “The first time I spoke up about it we had a whole two hour conversation about it, it was back and forth and I ended up having to apologize to the person because I saw that it wasn’t going anywhere again I was the one in the competition not them,” she continued. In a clip from the show that went viral viewers can see her losing the composure she worked so hard to develop and sobbing when being told that she had to relax her natural hair to remain in the competition. She was then even more shocked with Fitzwilliam berated her for crying because it was unprofessional even though she eventually gave in and taped a scene where she pretended to be happy so that the judges wouldn’t be upset. The producers showed her crying in contrast to other contestants crying about their boyfriends to equate the two things in viewers eyes infuriating Bernard. “I feel like the motive of the entire episode was to humiliate me on reality television.” The identity that producers and judges wanted to challenge by straightening Bernard’s hair was difficult for her to build up after years of denying herself to try and “fit in”. “I told them how important my hair was to me not just for cosmetic reasons but it was self-love reasons too because growing up I had predominantly white friends and I wanted to look white. I wanted to fit in so I would use high flash on my camera and all sorts of weird things just to not have my features . It’s crazy I would put ice on my lips to try and get them smaller just small crazy things that I look back at now and I’m like ugh.” Despite giving in on set she isn’t letting the experience defeat her. In fact she went home inspired to get involved in production and contribute to change in the media landscape. She developing a short film called “ Black Hair ” to encourage others to have their say and not be intimidated by outside voices even if they are in a position of power. She says, “Aside from all that drama because I’m not even trying to focus on that I just want people to know that they shouldn’t be afraid to be who they want to be however that looks. They should be comfortable in their skin if they want to have a weave, they can have a weave, if they want to have their hair natural, they should have their hair natural. On April 12, 14-year old Brennan Walker missed his bus to school and decided to ask a neighbor for help with directions. According to reports , Walker decided to walk up to the front porch of 53-year old Jeffrey Zeigler ’s home in Rochester Hills, Michigan and footage shows the teen scurrying away a few moments later after Zeigler came out with a shotgun and fired two shots at him. Zeigler, who is currently on trial for the incident, said in court that he wanted to fire more up in the air, but it was slippery. He added that it wasn’t until he watched the surveillance video that he realized the person who came to his porch was a 14-year-old boy. However, his wife’s testimony had a slightly different tone: “I saw a black person standing at my door and I screamed at him and I asked him what he was doing there. He tells me that he is going to school and at that point he approaches the door, forward momentum, comes forward, opens the screen door, and puts his hand on the door handle again, as though he’s coming into my house.” Zeigler, a retired firefighter, was charged with assault with intent to murder, which could lead to life in prison.
Ashley Darby is speaking out now that her husband Michael Darby has been accused of sexual assault . Not only is the The Real Housewives of Potomac star standing by her man, she’s claiming that charges have not even been filed. She also announces that her husband has not been suspended by Bravo. Is she telling the truth? Ashley Darby took to her Instagram Story on Saturday to affirm her support her embattled husband. “No charges filed,” she writes. “No arrest made.” “No Bravo suspension,” she continues. “No worries.” She then promises fans: “We’ll keep you posted.” That is very interesting … considering that two of those claims are in conflict with reports. TMZ ‘s report, which we are inclined to believe, says that Darby has been charged with felony assault. (He has also been charged with misdemeanor improper sexual contact) He has also been suspended by Truly Original, the production company behind The Real Housewives of Potomac. And he has been suspended by Bravo, who say that they have procedures to follow when allegations of this nature are made. It is curious that Ashley would make an announcement that is contrary to what we’ve heard. As you may recall, these allegations — reported to police within days of the October 1 incident — were made by a cameraman, Orville Palmer. According to his accusation, Michael Darby began by giving him what he perceived to be a flirtatious look. On its own, that’s a pretty subjective perception, and almost never a crime. He says that Darby then grabbed and groped his butt. He says that he put down the camera and demanded that Darby stop touching his butt. There was another alleged incident, days before, in which Michael Darby is said to have kicked him in the butt. Kicking someone’s butt is not necessarily sexual in nature, but consider this: One: you should not be touching anyone’s posterior without permission. Two: kicking a butt might not be inherently sexual, but it’s inherently assault. Stop it. As we mentioned, Palmer filed charges just days after the October 1 incident. Some may feel a surge of anger towards Ashley for standing by her husband when these allegations have been made. We should remember that blame for misdeeds — alleged or proven — should not be misplaced to a person’s family or loved ones. Ashley, like so many people who are close to those who are accused of predatory behavior, is struggling to reconcile the man she knows with what she has now heard. She may believe that this is over a vendetta against her husband, or somehow a ploy to make money. Be angry with her for her claims that are contrary to reports, if you like, but not every wife is likely to file for divorce when allegations surface. What makes this story a little complicated is that this alleged sexual assault case is that this is a married man who is accused of groping another man. Obviously, not all sex crimes are about attraction, but a lot of people find that surprising and even difficult to accept. There have been other famous man-on-man assault stories. The most famous among them are probably Brendan Fraiser and Terry Crews . No one has the right to touch another person without their consent. A 4-year-old boy tragically died early Saturday morning following an incident with a family member. The toddler reportedly plunged to his death after his mentally ill older brother threw the child from their Brooklyn building, officials said. Shimon Smith was found in the courtyard behind his apartment on Nostrand Ave. near Ave. J in Flatlands about 3:30 a.m., cops said, where he died at the scene. Too inhuman,” said John Okoh, whose family lives in the building. “They ought to have controlled the person who is sick.” The tot was thrown from a high floor, police sources said, but have not confirmed which number or exactly how high that is. According to reports, Shimon’s 20-year-old brother is actually the one who ran out into the street and flagged down a passing police car following the incident. Unfortunately for him, his now-late younger brother, and everybody involved with the situation, he is the one who ended up finding himself in handcuffs after cops realized that he may have been responsible for the boy’s death, sources said. Sources told CBS New York that the older brother eventually confessed to throwing Shimon off the building in Brooklyn’s East Midwood neighborhood. Charges against the older sibling, who has a history of schizophrenia, are currently pending. There are no other details regarding the horrifying events at the moment, or whether or not the poor child’s brother will sustain any charges following the death of 4-year-old Shimon Smith. Condolences go out to the entire family.

Florida Man Accused Of Killing Mistress And Her Unborn Son A married father from Florida is being accused of killing his mistress, who was 8 months pregnant with a child authorities say he fathered, according to reports from PEOPLE . 41-year-old Jose Soto-Escalera is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Tania Wise, 23, whose body was discovered in a ditch on August 24, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bryan Beaty confirmed to the publication. Beaty reports that Wise suffered blunt force trauma to the back of her head as well as trauma to her throat, though authorities have not yet released her official cause of death. An arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE states that a witness told police that Soto-Escalera had given Wise $500 for an abortion, and was very angry that Wise didn’t end up getting one. According to the affidavit, the Florida man denied to police that he was in a sexual relationship with Wise and said instead that he was at another person’s home fixing a car battery on the night she was killed. Soto-Escalera was arrested on September 21. A statement from the sheriff’s office states that digital forensic evidence connected the suspect to the crime, along with an eyewitness’ confirmation of seeing his truck near the crime scene. Authorities believe that the man’s wife was unaware about his relationship with Wise, the affidavit states. Sheriff Ken Mascara told Treasure Coast Newspapers , “We know that he was the father of the baby, we know that she had some other individuals in her life, men in her life. We don’t know if jealousy was a motive, we don’t know if there was other motives involved.” Mascara also told the paper that the woman was scheduled to have a C-section the week after her body was found, also saying that Soto-Escalera did not seem remorseful what-so-ever to police when he was arrested. Wise was pregnant with what would have been her second child. Soto-Escalera is now being held without bail in St. Lucie County Jail, according to jail records. He has not yet entered a plea, Beaty says.
