Taylor Swift Sings To Kanye West, Maybe, At VMAs

Swift debuts ballad about someone who lost his path in life. By James Dinh Taylor Swift performs at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images A year after Kanye west interrupted her Best Female Artist acceptance speech, Taylor Swift took the stage for a surprise performance without any interference at the 2010 Video Music Awards . But while the rapper didn’t appear onstage during her set, he might have been the subject of her new song, off her upcoming album, Speak Now. In a simple white dress, the singer kept her performance of the new song inside the theater, as opposed to last year’s New York subway production . Moments from last year’s Kanye fiasco flashed on an old television screen before the camera panned to a darkly lit Swift. As the songstress played her steel guitar, she sang the story of an individual who has lost their path. “I guess you really did it this time/ Left yourself in your war path/ Lost your balance on a tight rope/ Lost your mind trying to get it back,” she sang. Swift slowly began to walk away from her old country house set and toward the center main stage as song lyrics began to flash on the background screens. A bright sunset emerged behind her, possibly revealing that the 20-year-old has put such events behind her. While there’s no confirmation as to whether the song is about West, phrases like “32 and still growing up now” seem to indicate as much. It’s no surprise that Swift’s personal life seems to be the center of her new material. Earlier this year, she explained to fans that she was going to infuse her life experiences into her music, saying, “I’ve experienced a lot of things that I’ve been dying to write about and a lot of things that I wanted to say in the moment that I didn’t,” she told fans during a live chat about her album. Rumors of a Swift performance have been circulating the Internet for days. Some reports even indicated that the singer was to be joined onstage by West, who recently apologized for last year’s fiasco (again) and revealed that he’s written a song for the pop star. Swift was nominated for Best Female Video for her fairytale high school walkthrough clip “15,” but lost the Moonman to Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” What did you think of Taylor’s new song? Vanity Fair On Sarah Palin: She Has A Terrible Temper, Is A Bad Tipper

Two years after entering the nation’s klieg lights Sarah Palin is the subject of a detailed and sometimes scathing profile in next month’s Vanity Fair. The portrait that emerges is one of a willful, often-paranoid, sometimes vengeful woman with a terrible temper and a knack for folksy soundbites, who knows her strengths, saw her moment in the spotlight and has grabbed onto it with both hands. Or as Vanity Fair’s Michael Joseph Gross puts it “anywhere you peel back the skin of Sarah Palin’s life, a sad and moldering strangeness lies beneath.” What is perhaps most amazing about the profile is that it took this long for it to come about. For a woman who has been the subject of spectacular amounts press attention very few details about her personal life, or any life behind the public face and Facebook page, have come to light. Ironically, if Palin wasn’t so secretive none of the things revealed in this profile would be terribly interesting; for the most part it’s pretty basic stuff. But the newness of it subsequently makes it hard not to wonder if this marks some sort of turning point for Palin and the press. Certainly her public persona appeared to take a hit following her puzzling support of Dr. Laura’s N-word debacle (her Facebook and Twitter have been notably tame since), and Sunday’s NYT op-ed calling for the Dems to come up with their own Palin appears to have hit a nerve. Not that Palin is going anywhere, not by a long shot, but one gets the sense her time of skating through all the attention with nary a nod to the public outside a handful of controlled mediums be coming to a close. In the meantime here’s a short selection of passages from the VF profile including some solid speculation about the woman who may be the voice of Palin’s Facebook page. Read the full piece here. Update: Ben Smith thinks you should take this piece with a grain of salt: “[M]y takeaway from the magazine piece is more that you can really write anything about Palin.” A takeaway that arguably adds to the conclusion Palin’s press avoidance is beginning to work against her. Palin and the press: “Her on-the-record statements about herself amount to a litany of untruths and half-truths.” She keeps tight control of her pronouncements, speaking only in settings of her own choosing, with audiences of her own selection, and with reporters kept at bay. (Despite many requests, neither Palin nor her current staff would comment for this article.) She injects herself into the news almost every day, but on a strictly one-way basis, through a steady stream of messages on Twitter and Facebook. The press plays along. Palin is the only politician whose tweets are regularly reported as news by TV networks. The woman behind Sarah Palin’s Facebook page Palin’s most unconventional hire is a novice media consultant, Rebecca Mansour, a 36-year-old Los Angeles resident who has been identified in news stories as a screenwriter. Mansour has said that she volunteered for Obama early in the 2008 campaign and then became disillusioned. Not long after the election…[Mansour] co-founded the most popular pro-Palin blog, Conservatives4Palin, known informally as C4P. By mid-August, her byline, long the most prominent one on C4P, had vanished from the site. But her voice, or at least a voice that sounds much like hers, was about to turn up in another venue…After Mansour’s voice disappeared on C4P, however, Palin’s voice on Facebook and Twitter started sounding increasingly provocative and irascible…This summer, in her capacity as a SarahPAC staffer, Mansour insisted to a reporter that “anything that goes out under [Palin’s] name is hers.” Palin’s virtual voice does sometimes have the ring of authenticity. But often it sounds less like Palin herself than someone else’s fantasy version of Palin at her most vitriolic. On one occasion Palin’s virtual voice contradicted remarks she made in a TV interview two days later. Andrew Sullivan Alert Palin delivers basically the same speech she gave 18 hours earlier to the Tea Party group in Independence. You could pretty much replace the word “constitution,” from yesterday’s remarks, with “Bible,” and be good to go. Then Palin departs from the script and speaks as if from the heart, describing her fear and confusion upon discovering that Trig would be born with Down syndrome. “I had never really been around a baby with special needs,” she tells her listeners. For what it’s worth, this statement is untrue. Depicting the same moment of discovery in her own book, Palin writes that she immediately thought of a special-needs child she knew very well: her autistic nephew. Such falsehoods never damage Palin’s credibility with her admirers, because information and ideology are incidental to this relationship. For someone who loves the common folk, Palin is apparently a bad tipper Palin does not always treat those ordinary people well, however—it depends on who is watching…The only time I heard of Palin giving a generous tip was in St. Joseph, Michigan, after the owner of Kilwin’s chocolate shop, on State Street, sent a CARE package to Palin’s suite, and Palin walked to the store to say thank you. She also wanted to buy more boxes of candy to take home. When the owner would not accept her money, Palin, encircled by the crowd that had jammed the store to get a glimpse of her, pressed a hundred-dollar bill into the woman’s hand, saying, “This is for the staff.” That Ben Franklin was the talk of State Street the whole rest of the day. And has a Terrible Temper The intensity of Palin’s temper was first described to me in such extreme terms that I couldn’t help but wonder if it might be exaggerated, until I heard corroborating tales of outbursts dating back to her days as mayor of Wasilla and before. One friend of the Palins’ remembers an argument between Sarah and Todd: “They took all the canned goods out of the pantry, then proceeded to throw them at each other. By the time they got done, the stainless-steel fridge looked like it had got shot up with a shotgun. Todd said, ‘I don’t know why I even waste my time trying to get nice things for you if you’re just going to ruin them.’ ” This friend adds, “As soon as she enters her property and the door closes, even the insects in that house cringe. added by: TimALoftis

Usher Opens Up About Marriage To Tameka Foster

‘It just was never going to work out 100 percent,’ the singer says. By Mawuse Ziegbe Usher and Tameka Foster Photo: Getty Images/ Frank Micelotta Usher’s personal life — or public speculation about what has happened behind closed doors — has often figured prominently in the singer’s work. Fans ate up the 2004 Confessions LP , which dropped amid rumors that Usher had stepped out on ex-girlfriend Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. Similarly, the singer had endured whispers about his reportedly rocky marriage to stylist Tameka Foster before his latest album, Raymond v. Raymond, debuted at #1 this year . On the heels of the release of Versus, an extension of Raymond, the R&B crooner opened up about why he wasn’t able to make it work with Foster. “We’re two different people and we have two different goals,” Usher told People. “It just was never going to work out 100 percent.” Just like he did with his monster album Confessions, the ATL singer turned the heartbreak into hits. “My music is about where I am at the time,” Usher explained. “In Raymond v. Raymond, I was going through a lot of things, and it came out in my music. My marriage fell apart and I was suddenly a single father.” Continuing his tradition of mining his personal life for inspiration, Usher said that Versus is “about being a dating father.” Earlier this year, the buzz surrounding his relationship with Foster ramped up when Usher’s track “Papers,” a song about ending a marriage by signing off on divorce documents, hit airwaves. However, Usher told MTV News in March that while the track wasn’t inspired by a real-life situation, it unfortunately became a self-fulfilling prophecy. “When the song was recorded, I wasn’t divorced,” Usher said. “It was some reality in the contrast of trying to make it all work, having to balance a career and having a normal life. Coming in at six in the morning and arguing was a reality when you have those type of relationships. I felt that in a way, the story did touch on certain things at the time. I didn’t know how realistic it would become. I didn’t know I would become divorced. I did know it spoke on the contrast between trying to balance this world of being married and having this responsibility that’s like a marriage at the same time. The song spoke to that place. Unfortunately, it did become a reality.” What do you think of Usher’s explanation for the end of his marriage to Tameka Foster? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Usher

‘Machete’ Cast Thinks Lindsay Lohan’s ‘Gonna Be All Right’

Lohan’s co-stars praise the performance by the actress, who recently left rehab. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Jessica Alba, Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez at the “Machete” premiere Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Most of the cast of “Machete” was on hand in Los Angeles on Wednesday (August 25) to celebrate the premiere of their B-movie-inspired, Robert Rodriguez-directed flick. But one of the film’s stars was noticeably absent: Lindsay Lohan, who had been released from rehab a day earlier. The young actress’ road to recovery was on the mind of her co-stars. “You know what, I just care about her as a person,” Don Johnson told MTV News on the red carpet. “God bless her and she’s gonna do fine.” That sentiment was mirrored by Danny Trejo, who added, “Get home, girl! You’re gonna be all right. She’s gonna be fine. She knows what to do.” Another one of the flick’s stars, Cheech Marin, wanted to let Lohan know he supports her, and that he hopes this incident will be a catalyst for her getting her life back on track. “I wish her all the best. I mean, she’s a talented young actress,” he said. “Hopefully, she won’t let her personal life overwhelm her professional life … at some point, you gotta be responsible.” Michelle Rodriguez felt that publicly wishing Lindsay the best would not just benefit her former co-star. “I just think everybody should have in mind that when you wish the best for people around you, it only makes your country, your society, your culture better,” she explained. “So I think that we should all just respect the evolutionary paths of people and as much as we possibly can wish for the better, for light.” Earlier in the night, Jessica Alba praised Lohan , saying, “She’s so good in this movie. I can’t wait for people to see [her in] it.” Praise for Lohan’s performance also came from the film’s director. “She’s awesome in the movie. That’s what they’ll see: the actress behind all that paparazzi nonsense that follows her and won’t leave her alone,” Robert Rodriguez said. “They’ll get to see her and say, ‘Oh, that’s why we follow her around.’ ” Related Videos Lindsay Lohan: Crime And Punishment Related Photos ‘Machete’ Premieres In Los Angeles Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Tiger Woods Posts Worst Score EVER

Tiger Woods just completed his worst tournament since turning pro back in 1996 this weekend. Has his golf game disappeared along with his cadre of mistresses? Playing in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio, an event he has won a staggering seven times before, Tiges finished in a tie for 78th . Out of 80 players. His score of 298 was 39 shots higher than the record score he shot 10 years ago at Firestone. He set a new low by making bogey or worse on 25 of 72 holes. It’s such an amazing fall from grace that Elin Woods may be in the running for Sports Illustrated Sportswoman of the Year honors if it continues much longer. To think, just one swing of a nine-iron tamed the world’s best athlete … JUST DO IT BETTER : Tiger Woods and golf fans wish he would . No one expected Tiger Woods to dominate as he did before revelations of his sexual escapades with Rachel Uchitel and 15-200 other women surfaced late last year. But no one could have imagined this, either. “He’s just not the regular Tiger we’re used to seeing,” said fellow pro Anthony Kim. “He’s obviously had a lot of stuff going on, and he’s dealing with that.” “That’s more important than golf. I think golf is an easy thing to do once your personal life is straightened out. I’m sure it’s going to happen soon for him.” How soon? Will it coincide with the finalizing of his divorce or a judge shooting down Devon James ‘ paternity suit against him? Not even Woods can say.

Brody Jenner’s ‘Personal-Life Lips Are Sealed’ At ‘Hills’ Finale

‘I’m going to keep that part of my life completely separate,’ he tells MTV News when asked about rumored girlfriend Avril Lavigne. By Cara Alwill and Jean Bentley, with reporting by Tim Kash Brody Jenner Photo: MTV News Brody Jenner has been anything but low-key in his role on “The Hills.” He’s made his mark on the show as the playboy of the group and has been less than private about his relationships. But Tuesday night (July 13) on “The Hills” finale red carpet, Brody was singing a different tune. From his notorious hookups with on-again, off-again girlfriend Kristin Cavallari to his tumultuous relationship with Playboy Playmate Jayde Nicole, Brody has made waves with all the women on the show. He’s flirted with Audrina Patridge and even brought a new girl onto the scene when he briefly dated McKaela. But on Tuesday, Brody was tight-lipped when approached about his love life. Rumors have been swirling for months that Brody has been cozying up with singer Avril Lavigne , but he wouldn’t dish the dirt. “No, [my relationship] doesn’t get addressed on the show,” he told MTV News. “I think that right now, at this moment, this is the last and final episode, so my personal life is under wraps from now. I don’t have a show to put it all on, so I’m going to keep that part of my life completely separate, and I’m going to keep my personal-life lips sealed.” Brody has been quite candid about his former friend, Spencer Pratt. The two were close friends, but as Spencer began to get stranger, Brody became more and more distant. He, just like the rest of us, was wondering what tricks Spencer might have up his sleeve on Tuesday’s red carpet. Brody was just as much in the dark as the rest of us, proving only further just how far apart Spencer has grown from the group. Though he didn’t name names, Brody mentioned Spencer when discussing the show’s effect on his relationships. “I lost a few relationships out of [the show], which obviously turned out to be a good thing, but really I’m a very personal person, and a lot of times you get these cameras, and they come into your life and it’s crazy and you feel like you’re obligated and you have to share those certain things, so now that it’s over [ makes cutoff gesture ].” Do you hope Brody and Avril go public with their romance? Lindsay Lohan Is A ‘Fragile Lost Child,’ Lawyer Says

Stuart Goldberg declined to take her case after meeting with Lohan over the weekend. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: Dave McNew/ Getty Images Even with a 90-day jail sentence and a 90-day bid in an inpatient rehab facility to follow, a lawyer who met with Lindsay Lohan over the weekend about possibly taking up her case said the actress still doesn’t appear to fully understand how serious her situation is. According to People magazine, Chicago attorney Stuart V. Goldberg met with Lohan, her mother Dina and younger sister Ali at Lohan’s West Hollywood apartment this week after the “Mean Girls” star was dropped by her former attorney , and he came away concerned that his potential client is living in a fantasy world. “My impression of Lindsay is that she’s a fragile lost child — a sleeping beauty with her head in the sand. I found her not fully forewarned of the consequence of her actions,” Goldberg reportedly told the magazine. “I’m concerned that she’s not disciplined or tethered enough to the reality of adult consequences. … She doesn’t seem to have the awareness of what’s going to befall her.” Criminal defense attorney Goldberg was contacted after Lohan’s attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, quit the case following the backlash against the 24-year-old actress’ actions and alleged comments following her sentencing, which included revelations that she had the phrase “f— u” stenciled on her middle fingernail during the court appearance. After explaining to the Lohans that his requirement for taking on Lindsay’s case was “100 percent loyalty and zero tolerance for dishonesty,” Goldberg said “they didn’t seem to understand the urgency and gravity of the situation.” Additionally, TMZ reported that unnamed insiders said Goldberg may have split because Lohan’s manager said they couldn’t afford to pay him, while a source in the actress’ camp said it was because of personality issues. Much as she did during her probation hearing last week, Goldberg said Lohan took copious notes in a notebook during their six-hour meeting, while sister Ali asked “astute” questions, but in the end he declined to take on the case. He said at one point he worried that Lohan might be in a “dangerous state” and asked the actress — who has struggled with addiction issues and spent time in several rehab facilities — if she had thought about hurting herself. “She started sobbing quietly. She was genuinely in pain,” Goldberg said, adding that Lohan was “like Teflon” to his comment that she should get out of the toxic environment of Los Angeles. “It just slid right off her. She seemed to have some inner deep sadness that that was her fate.” Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

M.I.A. Says MAYA Is ‘A 3-D Album’

‘It’s not this one-dimensional, shiny pop album,’ singer says. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali M.I.A. Photo: MTV News It’s been called everything from her “most personal” effort and “a towering work” (link http://www.clashmusic.com/reviews/mia-maya) to an outright “turd” , but according to M.I.A. , her new ///Y/&#92 album is really just her … in 3-D form. “I think my album’s really diverse, because I tried to make a 3-D version of who I was. Maybe that’s because I made it in the year when everything was f—ing 3-D, like ‘The World Cup … in 3-D!’ ‘Toothpaste adverts in 3-D!’And I was like ‘Fine, I’ll make an M.I.A. album in 3-D,’ ” she told MTV News. “And … that’s what I did. Sonically, it’s a 3-D album, it’s not this one-dimensional, shiny pop album, or, like, f—ed up dub-step album. It’s just 3-D. You’re not always high all the time, going like, ‘Oh My God, life’s so great! [I’m] at the beach!’ It’s way more complex that that, and I think it has those levels in it.” And ///Y/&#92 (which hits stores Tuesday), is most certainly complex, an album of multi-tiered dissonance, of whoops and wails, squelches and scuzz. From the paranoid rattle of opening track “The Message” to the stoned-out babble of closer “Space,” M.I.A. and her cadre of producers (a team that, this time around, included not just frequent collaborator Diplo — he of the “turd” comment — but also Blaqstarr, Rusko and Switch) go to great lengths to pack the album with as much sonic detritus as possible … everything from pneumatic tools (on “Steppin’ Up”) to screaming jet engines (“Story To Be Told,”) with Suicide samples, handclaps, Tablas, Jamaican radio chatter, muffled gunshots and an army of power chords thrown in for good measure. It’s enough to make your head swirl … or possibly explode. And it sounds that way because, during the year-plus she spent working on the album, M.I.A. very much felt like she would explode, too. Barred from leaving the country, pregnant with her first child, watching her homeland of Sri Lanka slog through the last stages of a bloody civil conflict, she felt helpless, confused and downright frustrated by everything going on around her. And ///Y/&#92 is the sound of her inner turmoil. “The last album was more about the environment and where you ended up and the people you met … on this one, there was just so much going on in my own world, and in my own life — whether it’s personal or professional — [that] there’s just no room for all that stuff,” she said. “And I’m still working off things I’ve seen and been inspired by that I haven’t fully explored in my other two albums. And so, having all that, and then with all this extra sh– that was going on in my personal life, I think it worked out great that I couldn’t leave the country, and I was just, like, locked up in a cave. It gave me time and space to just puke all this stuff out that was going on in my own life.” So while it’s by no means easy listening, ///Y/&#92 isn’t supposed to be. Born out of intense personal strife, it represents M.I.A. at her most cathartic, her most detached, her most free. Does all of that make for radio-friendly pop? Not especially. Does it make for an absolutely compelling listen? Most definitely. “I couldn’t even register another human being, or another influence, or the scene and the music that’s going on outside. I’ve always been like that, I’ve always been out there … and been really connected to everything and everyone before,” she said. “And this was the first time I had to just take time out and I think this is the music that reflects all the stuff that was going on — sometimes it was confusing and sometimes it was great.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: M.I.A. MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer Lobbies U.S. Politicians to ‘Stand Up’ for Gay Rights

MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer on Monday appeared baffled as to why more U.S. politicians weren’t ‘standing up’ to demand the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” touting it as “a civil rights issue.” In the span of two hours, the cable network featured a gay member of the military and a conservative to discuss the issue. It was hardly a case of hearing two sides, however. Both guests favored allowing gays to serve openly. Talking to Richard Grenell , a former spokesman for Ambassador John Bolton, Brewer editorialized, ” It is a civil rights issue…Is it time for our American leaders to stand up for what’s right and no matter what public opinion polls say to have the leadership and the courage to take a stand on it? ” Earlier, Brewer cited a survey sent out to service members asking them questions such as whether they’d be comfortable showering with an openly gay individual. The cable host dismissed, “Now, substitute in the word black or Jewish and would that question to service members ever be okay?…Why aren’t more American leaders itching for a fight on gay rights?” At the end of the segment, Brewer read viewer e-mail on the issue. Two such messages favored repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. These she recited without comment. When she read a letter disagreeing with gay rights, Brewer could hardly disguise her opinion: “Carolyn Bramblett says, “Homosexuality is a sin issue, not a civil rights issue.’ Well, you know what Jesus said: ‘Let he who is without sin.'” In the 11am hour, MSNBC featured openly gay veteran Daniel Choi to dismiss the survey. Grenell is also gay. So, the network hardly sought out a variety of voices on the subject. A transcript of the segment, which aired at 12:43pm EDT, follows: 12:20 tease CONTESSA BREWER: Another traditionally safe [makes quotes marks] constituency for Democrats also angry, this time over a survey about the potential repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, many say has incendiary and homophobic language. The President said he wants Congress to repeal the law and Pentagon is in the process of studying the issue. But, a new survey sent out to service members asks questions that many find offensive. So, here’s the problem: Critics say the survey assumes a position of homophobia. For instance, here’s one of the questions: “If Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is repealed and you are assigned to bathroom facilities with open bay showers with a gay or lesbian service member, would you take no action or use a shower at a different time?” Now, substitute in the word black or Jewish and would that question to service members ever be okay? This is a pivotal civil rights issue. My big question today: Why aren’t more American leaders itching for a fight on gay rights? You can share your thoughts on Twitter, Facebook. You can get me on e-mail. Contessa@MSNBC.com We’re going to have a lively discussion about this in the next half hour. 12:43 BREWER: A new Pentagon survey is stirring up the controversy because it asks very pointed questions about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Some groups even suggest the survey uses homophobic language. 400,000 members of the armed forces got the question via e-mail asking questions about living with gays and using the same showers and same-sex couples in military housing.  The Pentagon is defending the questions. Rick Grenell is a conservative columnist, former spokesman to John Bolton and three other U.S. ambassadors and believes Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell should be repealed. We knew that the survey would happen. Claire McCaskill, actually, Rick, brought up her concerns about how the questions would be framed. When public policy pollsters conduct surveys to gain credibility and validity they have to formulate truly open ended questions. Do you have a problem with these questions? RICHARD GRENELL: Well, I think the key to this is having questions at all for a civil rights issue. What’s most surprising is President Obama and Nancy Pelosi that they are actually trying to say that this isn’t a civil rights issue, because clearly by having a questionnaire, they’re not so sure themselves. And I think the troubling thing for me and for a lot of conservatives is that they campaigned on this issue, that it was a civil rights issue and they were elected, they would end this. You know, when Barack Obama was a senator, he spent a lot of time telling people that it should just be taken care of with an executive order. Now that he’s president, the executive order excuse goes away and he’s blaming Congress. So, I think it’s really a difficult issue for the Democrats and they campaigned like it was an easy issue. BREWER: So, to drive this point home and it’s the argument that I made further, that if you put in instead of same-sex or homosexual and used, say, black, here would be the way the sample question would read. “If a wartime situation made it necessary for you to share a room, birth or field tent with someone you believed to be- insert here black- service-member which are you most likely to do?” And goes on to how you take action. You’re right. That question to service members would never be considered. And, in fact, when they integrated the military, my understanding is there was no general survey taken to see how service members would feel about it. It was done because it was the right thing to do. That being said, after I asked my big question today, Rick, I got a bunch of E-mail responses in. And you have people, viewers here who are writing and arguing that it’s not a civil rights issue because being born black is not a choice but being born gay is. GRENELL: Well, look, what I would say there is I’m a conservative. I think it’s outrageous that we are spending so much money, $4.5 million alone on this survey to investigate someone’s personal life. Whether you believe this is a choice, whether you believe that someone is born gay, I think it goes to the question of why are we wasting so much money to go after someone’s personal life, to investigate? It’s a national security issue when you’re encouraging people to actually lie. I’ve held a top secret security clearance. They want to know everything about you. They want to know that you’re truthful. BREWER: Right. GRENELL: At the end of the day people have to remember that individuals in the military are already showering with gay military folk. BREWER: And, again, regardless of what you think about homosexuality as an issue, that is like arguing you get to choose what region you are as an adult and you still can’t discriminate on the basis of that. I agree with you fully. It is a civil rights issue. Let’s talk about the leadership here. Is it time for our American leaders to stand up for what’s right and no matter what public opinion polls say to have the leadership and the courage to take a stand on it? GRENELL: Well, I agree. I think, yes, the answer is a definitive yes. However, it’s outrageous to me that this has been dragged through the political sphere. The Democrats are raising money off this issue. They want it to be a political issue. They are making this a political issue. They are choosing to make this a non-civil rights issue. They want this issue to go into the fall. They want to raise money and they want to make sure that Americans are constantly talking about this issue. And I think that that’s outrageous. BREWER: Rick, thank you so much for joining us. I appreciate your time. I appreciate you weighing in. A lot of folks have been weighing in online about why our nation’s leaders aren’t embracing gay rights as is civil rights issue. Clinton Hancock responds, “The politicians are too fearful of their constituents. Sometimes you have to teach your constituents, not just listen to them. Carolyn Bramblett says, “Homosexuality is a sin issue, not a civil rights issue.” Well, you know what Jesus said: Let he who is without sin. Paul Heimsath writes, “It’s 2010, people. This should not even be an issue.” You can reach out to me. Let me know your thoughts.

Leonardo DiCaprio To Star In J. Edgar Hoover Biopic

The movie, penned by ‘Milk’ screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, will be directed by Clint Eastwood. By Adam Rosenberg Leonardo DiCaprio Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In “Catch Me If You Can” he was constantly one step ahead of the FBI as legendary scam artist Frank Abagnale Jr. He also earned the domestic intelligence agency’s attention as industrialist Howard Hughes in “The Aviator.” Now DiCaprio is set to lead the FBI, playing its very first director, J. Edgar Hoover. Deadline Hollywood reports that the “Shutter Island” star will take on the challenging task of bringing the controversial Hoover’s life to the big screen in a biopic to be directed by Clint Eastwood, who is also producing with Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment. The script comes from Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Milk.” Deadline further reports that the film is untitled, though IMDb identifies it simply as “Hoover.” A great deal of controversy surrounds the life of the FBI’s first director. Hoover served in a leadership role over the FBI and its precursor organizations for a total of 48 years. Although he is credited as being responsible for instituting many of the bureau’s grand-scale crime-fighting techniques, he has also been accused of misusing his power for political purposes and employing illegal methods in evidence-gathering. Following Hoover’s reign, the FBI instituted a 10-year maximum term for all directors. As for Hoover’s personal life, it is fraught with rumors that he was a closeted homosexual and cross-dresser. Many of these allegations come from untrustworthy sources and have been refuted, but it remains to be seen how Black chose to handle that aspect of the FBI director’s life in his script. DiCaprio teamed with filmmaker Martin Scorsese earlier in the year — their fourth collaboration — for an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel “Shutter Island.” The actor also has a major summer blockbuster coming next month, sci-fi action/thriller “Inception,” from “The Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan. Eastwood has shifted in his later years from grizzled cowboy actor to respected filmmaker. He picked up Oscar nominations for “Mystic River” and “Letters From Iwo Jima,” and he took home Best Director and Best Picture awards in 2005 for “Million Dollar Baby,” a film for which he also received a Best Actor nom. Eastwood is set to release his latest directing effort, “Hereafter,” later this year. The Peter Morgan-penned supernatural thriller stars Matt Damon and Bryce Dallas Howard. “Hoover” is tentatively scheduled for a 2012 release.
