Kristen Stewart Relates To Bella ‘Generally’ In ‘Eclipse’

‘I know what it feels like to be unsure,’ actress tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News It’s not every day that one has to reconcile their romantic feelings toward a sparkling vampire and a hunky werewolf, but it’s an emotional conflict Bella Swan faces on a regular basis in the “Twilight” series. While it’s not a struggle Kristen Stewart deals with in her own personal life, that doesn’t mean the 20-year-old actress doesn’t bring her own experiences into her portrayal of the angst-ridden Bella . “You are who you are,” Stewart told MTV News while promoting “Eclipse,” the upcoming third installment in the “Twilight” series. “Everything that I’ve been through definitely informs the way I feel about everything I play, because you can’t claim to be a different person just because you’re playing Bella.” Even though Stewart finds her personal experiences helpful in informing her performance, the actress said she tries not to draw upon specific anecdotes while working. “I try not to be specific about it, though, because it gets muddled,” she explained. “You’re not playing yourself, so if you start putting your personal details in [a performance], it confuses things. But, definitely, I feel generally inspired, if I can relate to something.” As for the aspects of her character Stewart relates to most, the young actress revealed: “I know what it feels like to be unsure. I know what it feels like to be ashamed and having made mistakes and going, ‘Hey, it’s totally OK to have made that mistake!’ I get that, but not specifically.” We’ll be live at the L.A. premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” on Thursday, June 24. Rep. Joe Barton Apologizes to BP’s Tony Hayward for White House "Shakedown"

BP CEO Tony Hayward is in the midst of a harsh grilling today on Capitol Hill, where he is testifying House Committee on Energy and Commerce hearing on “The Role of BP in the Deepwater Horizon Explosion and Oil Spill.” But not long after the hearing began, Hayward got something not many expected from lawmakers: An apology. Rep. Joe Barton, a Texas Republican, apologized to Hayward for what he described as a “shakedown” at the White House yesterday. He was referring to the deal worked out between the Obama administration and BP to set up a $20 billion fund administered by a third party to pay for damages from the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. “I'm ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday,” Barton said. “I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown, in this case, a $20 billion shakedown.” He complained that “the attorney general of the United States, who is legitimately conducting a criminal investigation and has every right to do so to protect the interests of the American people, [is] participating in what amounts to a $20 billion slush fund that's unprecedented in our nation's history, that's got no legal standing, and which sets, I think, a terrible precedent for the future.” “I apologize,” Barton added. “I do not want to live in a country where any time a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong is subject to some sort of political pressure that is — again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown. So I apologize.” “I'm speaking now totally for myself,” he noted. “I'm not speaking for the Republican Party.” Not long after Barton spoke, the White House released a statement calling his comments “shameful.” “What is shameful is that Joe Barton seems to have more concern for big corporations that caused this disaster than the fishermen, small business owners and communities whose lives have been devastated by the destruction,” said Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. “Congressman Barton may think that a fund to compensate these Americans is a 'tragedy', but most Americans know that the real tragedy is what the men and women of the Gulf Coast are going through right now. Members from both parties should repudiate his comments.” According to the Associated Press, Barton has taken more than $100,000 in political contributions from oil and gas interests since the beginning of 2009, more than all but one other member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. At the hearing, Rep. Ed Markey (D – MA) said he “could not disagree more strongly” with Barton's comments. “Not only is the compensation fund that was created yesterday at the White House in an agreement reached between BP and President Obama not a slush fund and not a shakedown, rather it was the government of the United States worked to protect the most vulnerable citizens that we have in this country right now – the residents of the Gulf,” he said. “American citizens are being harmed,” Markey added. “We cannot wait, as unfortunately so many victims of the Exxon Valdez had to wait years to see those families compensated. We can't lose sight of fact that the 1984 Bhophal disaster and lawsuits related to it, were only settled last week. We have to make sure American citizens are protected.” “The families of the Gulf will be crushed financially unless this compensation fund is put in place,” said Markey, arguing that the history of Gulf families will be “permanently altered” without action. Markey added that the creation of the slush fund reflected “American government working at its best” to ensure that families do not become “roadkill” as a result of corporate practices. As Markey spoke, Barton leaned back in his chair reading what appeared to be the newspaper Investor's Business Daily. added by: TimALoftis

Rihanna Is Working On ‘Positive, Explosive’ Tracks With Sean Garrett

‘Her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,’ songwriter says. By Jayson Rodriguez Rihanna Photo: Fotonoticias/ WireImage Rihanna channeled her personal life into her last album, Rated R, a dark collection of songs that touched on her experience with former flame Chris Brown, who assaulted her just before the 2009 Grammys. For her follow-up, she and her collaborators are promising something more energetic . Rihanna recently told Elle that she’s much happier these days, and gushed about how her new beau, baseball player Matt Kemp, keeps her “sane.” And according to songwriter Sean Garrett , who has been in the studio with Rihanna recently, her new music reflects this state of mind. “I can definitely say that her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,” Garrett told MTV News. “I hope she doesn’t mind me saying this. I love Rihanna. She’s fun, she’s like a sister, and I tend to think she doesn’t really take herself too seriously. And I think that’s what this album is gonna be about. “Remember when Rihanna was just the little girl from the island and she was just having fun with ‘Pon de Replay’ and enjoying life?” Garrett continued. “It always seemed like, ‘Dag, she has that thing. ‘ And it wasn’t so serious until the incident happened. And everything became so serious. That’s just life. But I’m just happy to see her back. And I can definitely say the records that we’ve been working on are very positive and very explosive. Heavy in the club.” In addition to Garrett, producer David Guetta said he wants to work with Rihanna and help her revisit her “Umbrella” days. “Well, you know, I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you want to dance,” Guetta told MTV News. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” What musical direction would you like to see Rihanna go on her next album? Fans in the military named Bullock the Entertainer of the Year on Saturday night. In the speech, Bullock thanked the fans who voted her to victory at the show. “Let’s be honest here, just for a moment. We’re all going to be honest, right?” Bullock began. “Did I win this for being entertainer of the year, or did I win this because of the spectacular I.E.D. Crystal Bowersox Was Proud To Break The ‘American Idol’ Mold

‘Unique people are really what colors the world,’ the ‘American Idol’ runner-up tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Crystal Bowersox Photo: MTV News During her run on “American Idol” — and perhaps even more so during her time off the show — Crystal Bowersox made it a point to march to the beat of a different drummer (or didgeridoo player ). From her choices of songs to her epically dreadlocked mane, she worked very hard to be her own person and never really fit within the “Idol” mold. And yes, she’s aware that her uniqueness might have cost her the season-nine crown and that a certain part of the American public might consider her to be a bit, well, odd, but she has no regrets, and she doesn’t plan to change anytime soon, no matter what people might think of her. In fact, she’ll openly discuss all the things that made her stand out from the “Idol” herd, because they’re also the things that make her an individual. “Oh yeah, like the fact that I have missing teeth and that I don’t comb my hair. I mean … I think that unique people are really what colors the world,” she told MTV News. “It’s a beautiful thing to be your own individual, and in high school, you get pushed into being the same as everyone, and then, once you’re an adult, you look for the differences in people. That’s what’s interesting about life and humanity.” Though she said she never felt out of place on “Idol,” Bowersox also realized that things are different now that she’s the newly crowned runner-up. Seems folks are tripping over themselves to try to label her and her music, to package it and market it a certain way. And that — more than anything else — is what gets her ire up. “It bothers me a little bit, because why pigeonhole anything? I’ve got songs that are country, I’ve got blues and rock … R&B … there’s really nothing that I’m not open to, and I don’t really want to be in one genre,” she said. “It’s really the market that does that. People don’t know how to sell your album unless you are in a specific category on the shelf. So, hopefully, that won’t happen too much [with me].” But you get the feeling that, no matter what happens with her post-“Idol” career, Bowersox won’t go down without a fight. She may look like a fish out of water, but in reality, she’s been prepping for this moment her entire life. “My whole life has been this crazy. Not, like, this kind of crazy, but just crazy in general. I roll with the punches, I always have,” she smiled. “I’ve never felt stronger in my life. There’s nothing I can’t handle right now — media coverage, my personal life, all this stuff — I’ve always been an open book through my music. There’s not much that I’m afraid to say. … There’s a lot I have on my mind, a lot of things I want to say, and I’m not afraid to say ’em.” Did Crystal’s individuality help or hurt her on “Idol”? Or both? Discuss in the comments. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Dennis Hopper Dead At 74

‘Easy Rider’ star died of prostate cancer Saturday. By Kelley L. Carter and Jem Aswad Dennis Hopper Photo: George Rose/Getty Images Actor Dennis Hopper — star of “Easy Rider,” “Blue Velvet,” “Giant” and many other films — died Saturday of prostate cancer at his Los Angeles-area home, according to The Associated Press. He was 74. The two-time Academy Award nominee, who announced through a manager in the fall of 2009 that he had been diagnosed with the disease, was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death, family friend Alex Hitz told the AP. The actor directed, co-wrote and starred in directed 1969’s “Easy Rider,” perhaps the most memorable film of his wildly erratic, nearly six-decade-long career. In that classic, generation-defining film — which also established Jack Nicholson as a major star — he and Peter Fonda played motorcycle-riding hippies in search of America. The film was a Hollywood success story; it was produced for less than $500,000 and ultimately earned in excess of $40 million. “Easy Rider” also earned two Academy Award nominations, including a shared screenplay nod for Hopper, Fonda and Terry Southern. Born in Kansas on May 17,1936, and raised in San Diego, Hopper made his mark in movies as a teenager, starring with in James Dean, whom he idolized, in the 1950s classics “Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant.” His career followed a bumpy path over the decades, veering between fame and obscurity — due in equal measure to substance abuse and his legendarily rebellious personality — before being permanently revived by his memorable 1986 role as the psychotic Frank in “Blue Velvet.” He appeared in dozens of films over the years, including “Apocalypse Now,” “Hoosiers,” “Speed,” “River’s Edge,” “Rumblefish,” “True Romance,” “True Grit,” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2,” to name just a few; he also made many television appearances, including “24” and “The Twlight Zone.” His directing credits included “Colors,” “The Hot Spot,” “Chasers” and “The Last Movie,” his disastrous 1971 follow-up to “Easy Rider,” the production of which was so erratic that it effectively blackballed him from the film industry for years. Hopper’s personal life was no less dramatic than his work: Married five times (including an eight-day marriage to Mamas & the Papas singer Michelle Phillips in 1970), he struggled for many years with alcoholism and drug abuse before becoming sober in the 1980s. He filed for divorce from his fifth wife, Victoria Duffy, in January, after 14 years of marriage and one child (daughter Galen Grier). He was also an avid photographer and art collector. Hopper appeared frail when he was awarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in March of this year. His work will still continue; in September he will be heard as one of the lead voices in “Alpha and Omega.” Hopper seemed to be acutely aware of his own mortality, telling Time magazine in 1986: “I thought I’d be dead before I was 30. Turning 40 stunned me. Fifty is a major miracle, and I think I may even make 70.” Share your memories of Dennis Hopper in the comments below. Related Photos Dennis Hopper: A Life In Photos

Lady Gaga Dedicates ‘Speechless’ To Ailing Grandfather

‘I suppose if we sing loud enough, he’ll be able to hear us,’ Gaga says at Monster Ball Tour show in Nottingham, England. By By James Dinh Lady GaGa performs in Nottingham, England Photo: Ollie Millington/Redferns It was an emotional night for Lady Gaga, who took a moment to dedicate the song “Speechless” to her ailing grandfather during the Nottingham, England, stop on her Monster Ball Tour. Gaga, who typically dedicates the ballad, off her The Fame Monster album, to her father, broke down in tears on Thursday. “I don’t always talk about my personal life but my grandpa’ sick,” she told the audience.” And I’m really close with my grandpa and he’s really sick and he’s in the States and my dad’s with him. So I was like crying all day, really sad. So I thought I might just be honest and tell you that’s what’s going on.” The pop star went on to explain that she has tried to be “a really good, strong daughter.” It was her father who called and asked that she dedicate “Speechless” not to him, but to her grandfather and not him, Gaga said as she sat at a piano onstage. “So it’s been one of those tough things that my grandpa’s too old to come to my show, but I suppose if we sing loud enough, he’ll be able to hear us. So this one’s for you grandpa,” she added. “This record’s called ‘Speechless.’ ” Not surprisingly, Gaga’s ever-devoted “little monsters” showed their support for the singer by making #getwellgrandpagaga a trending topic on Twitter. And this wasn’t the first time Gaga paid tribute to loved ones both in her music and in concert. In an interview with MTV News, Gaga revealed the inspiration for the very personal song . “My mom called me, and I was very depressed. I was on tour and I couldn’t leave, so I went into the studio and I wrote this song ‘Speechless,’ and it’s about these phone calls,” she said of discovering father had declined to seek treatment for a heart condition. “My dad used to call me after he’d had a few drinks and I wouldn’t know what to say. I was speechless and I just feared that I would lose him and I wouldn’t be there.” At the Brit Awards earlier this year, Gaga performed a brief medley of her “Telephone” and “Dance in the Dark” as a tribute to her friend, the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen.
