Bozell Column: Bigotry Central

It’s been two months since Comedy Central censored Mohammed out of their cartoon “South Park.” Even the utterance of the name was bleeped. The blog Revolution Muslim quoted the world’s most notorious terrorist as an inspirational figure. “As Osama bin Laden said with regard to the cartoons of Denmark, ‘If there is no check in the freedom of your words, then let your hearts be open to the freedom of our actions.’” But there has been no ceasefire in Comedy Central’s war on Christianity. The attacks on Catholic Americans just keep coming. On “The Daily Show” on June 17, fake correspondent Samantha Bee interviewed two priests and two nuns who are watchdogging Goldman Sachs for a liberal interfaith group. Jon Stewart started the Catholic-bashing in his introduction: “Sometimes it’s easy to spot the villain in a story. Sometimes it’s not.” Bee joked to the priests and nuns: “Jesus wants us all to be rich. The Pope gets it. Have you even seen his ceiling?” Later, she joked that these “churchies” are “maybe not the best messengers.” When they suggested Goldman Sachs needed more transparency, Bee stressed with a laugh track: “Hold on. The Catholic Church wants more transparency.” Referring to this spring’s round of media investigations and church statements on priest sexual abuse, she said “Wouldn’t it be better to just lay low for a little while?” She narrowed her eyes and lectured a financial analyst: “Goldman Sachs is losing a P.R. war to the Catholic Church . That is not easy to do.” Christians should and do allow themselves to be the objects of good-natured comedy, but there is clearly a nasty, even vicious undercurrent here. In an interview on the National Public Radio show “Fresh Air” on June 2, Bee revealed that she loves the church-mocking as a “terribly lapsed” Catholic. “So it is joyful for me to do that. That is pure pleasure for me, I will say.” The comedians appearing on Comedy Central are also piling on Catholics. On June 11, the Catholic Church was mocked in a special featuring comedian Paul F. Tompkins . “Things started to just kind of unravel for her and it made less and less sense,” Tompkins said of his mother turning to atheism. “She said, ‘One day I woke up and I realized it was all just s–t.’ Very eloquently put, mother dear.” He described the steady, subtle erosion of faith. “And so years and years go by and then one day you wake up and say, ‘Hey, what happened to all that crazy junk I used to believe in? Boy, I sure like having my Sundays back.’” That was mild compared to the comedian calling himself Louis C.K., who appeared on “The Daily Show” on June 16 . Jon Stewart promoted him as “one of my all-time favorite comedians.” Late in the segment, as they were joking about being bleeped by censors, Louis said “I was going to say that the pope f—ed boys and I didn’t have time.” After the laughs, he insisted he was serious: “I do think he does. Can I defend that before we go away?…Well here’s the thing. He lets other people do it,” and you are either outraged, or you are participating in it. In this bigot’s mind, and many virulent anti-Catholic minds, Pope Benedict’s myriad of apologies and denunciations don’t display an ounce of outrage. He was not kidding. On YouTube, there’s a five-minute video he made for his own website LouisCK.com where he interviews a fake “church spokesman” in priestly garb. The man declares “The Catholic Church is an ancient, worldwide organization dedicated to the constant goal of f—ing young boys.” Louis C.K. presents a fake letter from the Pope that says “We at the Catholic Church f— boys all day long. That’s all we ever do. Signed, the Pope.” The “spokesman” he was interviewing proclaimed that “we’re very thorough” and the priests have raped every Catholic boy who’s come through a church door. With a smile, this alleged comic, a lapsed Catholic, “remembers” that why, yes, he was raped. You don’t make a skit like this for laughs. You make it to propagate a lie and unleash your personal hatred. But these Catholic-bashing comedians aren’t even controversial or “edgy.” Apparently, smearing the global leader of the world’s largest church just makes you a “truth” teller. Louis C.K. had a sitcom on HBO, and he’s now publicizing his new one for FX. He is so mainstream that CBS News just used him for a largely warm and fuzzy Father’s Day commentary on their show “Sunday Morning.” That’s how acceptable anti-Catholic bigotry has become.

In an exclusive outtake from “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” which aired Wednesday on MTV, the MC’s producer and close friend Noah “40” Shebib talks about his musical partner’s penchant for drawing from his personal life, as the pair are seen working on the introspective Alicia Keys collaboration. The producer expresses pleasant surprise at how quickly the public has shown an affinity for Drake’s confessional tomes, comparing their connection to his own, someone who’s been along for the ride since before the mega-success unleashed by So Far Gone. “It’s funny, you know, people are so receptive to Drake’s music, and I always find that encouraging because they don’t know him,” 40 says. “And I really know him, so to me, it’s 10 times more special. That’s him. All those songs are real. And it sounds so clich

Awkward: ABC Skips Report That Bianna Golodryga’s Fiancee Is Leaving the White House

Good Morning America on Tuesday skipped the news that Peter Orszag, Barack Obama’s budget director, is resigning from the White House. Perhaps not coincidentally, Orszag is also the fiancee of GMA’s weekend anchor Bianna Golodryga. CBS’s Early Show and NBC’s Today both covered the subject. Today reporter Savannah Guthrie explained, “It’s a mix of the personal and the political. Most budget directors stay about 18 months. If he had stayed much longer, he’d probably have to get into the next budget cycle and be in for the long haul. He’s also getting married this fall .” The Early Show’s Betty Nguyen pointed out, “Orszag would be the first high profile member of the Obama administration to leave.” GMA has a history of ignoring awkward details for Golodryga. In January, the show skipped the fact that Orszag had a love child with his previous girlfriend (after divorcing his first wife). NBC covered it. On May 17, 2010, Orszag actually appeared on GMA to congratulate his fiancee for being named the new weekend anchor. With former Democratic aide turned host George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America, doesn’t the program have enough conflicts of interest? Brief transcripts from The Early Show and Today can be found below: The Early Show 06/22/10 BETTY NGUYEN: It’s reported that President Obama’s budget director is calling it quits. A Democratic official tells the Associated Press that Peter Orszag is expected to resign in the coming months. Orszag would be the first high profile member of the Obama administration to leave. Today 6/22/10 MORALES: All right. Meantime, Savannah, there’s also some news this morning about the budget director, Peter Orszag? GURTHRIE: That’s right. As long expected, Peter Orszag is actually leaving the administration, probably some time this summer. Why? It’s a mix of the personal and the political. Most budget directors stay about 18 months. If he had stayed much longer, he’d probably have to get into the next budget cycle and be in for the long haul. He’s also getting married this fall. MORALES: All right. Savannah Guthrie with a lot there going on at the White House- thanks so much.

Megan Fox Wants To Play Native American Lesbian Superhero Rainmaker

‘Jonah Hex’ star would love to star in adaptation of ‘Gen 13’ comic book series. By Jocelyn Vena Megan Fox Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ Getty Images Though Megan Fox’s turn as a gun-toting prostitute in the adaptation of comic book “Jonah Hex” failed to make an impression at the box office, the actress said she would like to have another go at the comic book genre. “I don’t want people to protest this, but I would like to be [Sarah] Rainmaker in ‘Gen 13’ if they ever made that into a movie,” she told Fox News . “Gen 13” is about a group of teens who escape from a government training facility after they realize they’re being kept there to test their superhuman powers. Rainmaker is an Apache superhero who has the power to manipulate the weather using her thoughts. She also is skilled in all things combat. Despite that aptitude, she is a pacifist, unless she has to fight off evil villains. “I grew up reading ‘Gen 13,’ ” Fox told MTV News last year, but more recently, she clarified that she’s not an expert in the genre. “I have some knowledge, but I’m not a hard-core nerd. Unfortunately, I would like to be, but I just don’t have the knowledge.” But speaking to Fox News, she was confident in her ability to play Rainmaker. “She’s a Native American, and I have a little bit of that blood in me,” Fox said of the role. “It would be a bit of a stretch — but if Jake Gyllenhaal can be the Prince of Persia, I think that I can do that.” As for the combat part, she luckily had to learn those skills for “Jonah Hex.” “The best part was the guns, because I’ve never done that before so that was a completely new challenge, and there was really not a ‘worst part,’ ” Fox explained. “If I had to pick, I guess I would say the corset, but I personally enjoyed that, and it’s just hard to kick ass when you’re laced up in something like that.” Would you like to see Megan Fox in the role of Rainmaker? Michael Jackson Fans Face Tight Restrictions At Forest Lawn Cemetery

Fans can’t camp out, get near mausoleum or release doves on Friday’s anniversary of Jackson’s death. By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Getty Images With Friday’s one-year anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death fast approaching, fans from around the world are, no doubt, working on their plans for honoring the late King of Pop. One logical place for those supporters to gather is Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California, where Jackson is interred in the Great Mausoleum. But despite reports last month that fans were expected to have limited access to Forest Lawn on Friday, according to TMZ , officials are putting a number of conditions on anyone planning to attend the event. A rep for Forest Lawn told the site that attendees will be allowed to enter the park on Friday, but, as expected, they will not be allowed anywhere near the mausoleum, the final resting place for a number of Hollywood legends, including Clark Gable, Carole Lombard and Jean Harlow. As for the special requests made by fans hoping to honor Jackson’s memory — including the releasing of balloons or doves, or holding performances of Jackson’s songs and dance routines — the rep said they too were mostly denied. A spokesperson for the Glendale Police Department said that fans will not be allowed to camp out or park around Forest Lawn 24 hours in advance of the anniversary, and no street vendors can set up booths hawking MJ merchandise near the cemetery. The past year has contained plenty of other tributes to Jackson , from superstar DJ mixtapes to a recently announced plan for a $300 million museum and performance complex in the singer’s hometown of Gary, Indiana. Jackson died on June 25 after suffering cardiac arrest at his rented Hollywood mansion. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office ruled that the 50-year-old singer died of “acute propofol intoxication” in combination with the use of sedatives. Authorities have claimed that his personal physician, cardiologist Conrad Murray, administered a lethal dose of the surgical anesthetic to chronic insomniac Jackson in an attempt to help him get to sleep. Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in February in connection with Jackson’s death and has pleaded not guilty in the case. The doctor is out on $75,000 bail and faces up to four years in prison if convicted. Celebrate Michael Jackson ‘s legacy all week long as MTV News looks back at his life, his music and the death that shook the world one year ago. Kristen Stewart Relates To Bella ‘Generally’ In ‘Eclipse’

‘I know what it feels like to be unsure,’ actress tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News It’s not every day that one has to reconcile their romantic feelings toward a sparkling vampire and a hunky werewolf, but it’s an emotional conflict Bella Swan faces on a regular basis in the “Twilight” series. While it’s not a struggle Kristen Stewart deals with in her own personal life, that doesn’t mean the 20-year-old actress doesn’t bring her own experiences into her portrayal of the angst-ridden Bella . “You are who you are,” Stewart told MTV News while promoting “Eclipse,” the upcoming third installment in the “Twilight” series. “Everything that I’ve been through definitely informs the way I feel about everything I play, because you can’t claim to be a different person just because you’re playing Bella.” Even though Stewart finds her personal experiences helpful in informing her performance, the actress said she tries not to draw upon specific anecdotes while working. “I try not to be specific about it, though, because it gets muddled,” she explained. “You’re not playing yourself, so if you start putting your personal details in [a performance], it confuses things. But, definitely, I feel generally inspired, if I can relate to something.” As for the aspects of her character Stewart relates to most, the young actress revealed: “I know what it feels like to be unsure. I know what it feels like to be ashamed and having made mistakes and going, ‘Hey, it’s totally OK to have made that mistake!’ I get that, but not specifically.” We’ll be live at the L.A. premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” on Thursday, June 24. They Took All the Trees And Put Them in a Tree Museum

Joni Mitchell wrote: They took all the trees Put ’em in a tree museum And they charged the people A dollar and a half just to see ’em And they built it in Switzerland! But with inflation, it is now fifteen bucks. It is the personal collection of landscape architect Enzo Enea, who tells the New York Times: “I have collected trees over the last 17 years from gardens that I was building or houses that I was building,” Mr. Enea said. “Trees had to be moved, and instead of cutting them, I tried to remove them.” … Read the full story on TreeHugger
