Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images Lean On Me Is Being Adapted For TV Thanks To LeBron James LeBron James is developing something new every single day, and it just keeps getting better and better. Over the past couple of months, the NBA star has opened a groundbreaking new public school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, and on top of that, he’s also negotiated several deals with various networks including NBC, Netflix, and Showtime to bring a bunch of different projects to life. And now, James is adding yet another production to his already insane portfolio. LeBron’s latest venture is a partnership with John Legend and Wendy Calhoun to bring Lean On Me to the small screen. Inspired by the classic 1989 film–which starred Morgan Freeman–the series will center on Amarie Baldwin, a young Black teacher who gets hired to be the principal at a struggling Akron high school. Just like the original film, the television show will reportedly highlight how the system continues to fail kids of color, and Amarie must overcome certain obstacles to help her students succeed. Calhoun recently signed an overall deal with Warner Bros. TV and will serve as writer and executive producer on the project, along with with John Legend, LeBron James and his Springhill Entertainment business partner, Maverick Carter.
John Stillwell – PA Images/PA Images via Getty Images DJ Quik Reflects On Michael Jackson’s Influence At His Diamond Celebration In Las Vegas It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly a decade since Michael Jackson passed away, but his influence continues to reach far and wide. Bossip’s Senior Director of Content Janeé Bolden attended Michael Jackson’s Diamond Celebration in honor of what would have been Jackson’s 60th birthday a few weeks ago, where guests enjoyed a live performance of Michael Jackson’s “ONES” show at Mandalay Bay and an afterparty deejayed by Mark Ronson, where Usher performed. Besides taking in the performance, we also had a chance to chat with Michael’s brothers Tito and Jackie Jackson about Jackson’s legacy and hear DJ Quik reveal he nearly had the chance to open for Michael. Judy Eddy/WENN.com “He would be smiling down at this event,” Tito told BOSSIP. “We’re very excited to celebrate his birthday and his legacy with all the celebrities who’ve come out tonight.” Jackie modeled a pair of new Giuseppe Zanotti x Michael Jackson sneakers as the designer himself also walked the red carpet. “It’s a new shoe, it comes out in October,” Jackie told BOSSIP. “It’s just one style of it, but I dig it. I’m going to wear it onstage too.” When asked if the family had any plans for a private celebration of Michael’s 60th, Tito reminded us that much of his family doesn’t believe in such commemorations. “As you now, half of my family is Jehovah Witness,” Tito said. “And the ones that do celebrate, you’re looking at them right now.” Besides Tito and Jackie, Michael’s oldest children Prince and Paris were also in attendance. Other celebrity guests included Gabrielle Union, Vanessa Hudgens, Blake Griffin, Usher, Angela Bassett, Evan Ross and Ashlee Ross Simpson and rapper/producer DJ Quik. Quik told us he was especially happy to join MJ’s Diamond Celebration because he’d nearly been an opener for the pop superstar at one point in his career. “I never got a chance to see Michael live,” DJ Quik told BOSSIP. “My opportunity came when his promoter Terry Harvey called me to open some of his shows that he was going to do at the O2 Arena back in 2009. I was stoked. I had just put out a record with Kurupt and we were on a promo tour. Our promo tour started June 25, 2009 [the day Jackson died] so you know what day that was. While we were soundchecking, we get the news we’re not going to Europe and performing with him.” “I was out of it,” Quik added. “I don’t even know if I performed. I was hurt.” Quik took a moment to stroll down memory lane with us, remembering back to the first time he saw Jackson’s “Thriller” video: “We didn’t have cable at that point,” Quik told BOSSIP, “so I was across the street at my homeboy Billy Ray Smith’s house watching it on their cable TV — you know, back when the TV’s used to sit on the floor? One of them big RCA or Zenith TVs and being moved by it.” “We had seen all the rock’n’roll videos, Def Leppard and all that, but when his video came on it spoke right to us. It let us know that black people could do it.” Judy Eddy/WENN.com Asked to describe which Michael Jackson song best reflects his life, Quik, born David Blake, didn’t hesitate a beat. “‘Human Nature,’ because that record describes the whimsical part of life,” Quik said. “Michael Jackson was a dreamer and he was all about ooh’ing and aah’ing people. That record just has some kind of quality in it that lets you know you can be magic too.” With Prince and Paris Jackson in attendance and accompanied by his own son David Jr. Quik also took a moment to reflect on the importance of legacy. “It’s important because nobody is going to represent you like the people that you raised,” Quik said. “You can hire people publicists all day long and tell them to run this or run that, but when my son speaks about me he is going to speak from the heart. He’s going to speak about the personal experiences and public.” Quik’s son is also a producer and the Compton native said he couldn’t be more proud of him. “This kid is awesome. He did it on his own,” Quik boasted. “I didn’t have to tell him hey son do this or do that. Now I ask him for beats. ‘Can I rap on it one time? I still got it son, I think I still got it.’Now he’s performing, he’s engineering. I’m really proud of the stuff he does behind the scenes, he’s in the studio teaching other people how to engineer, how to patch wires… He got it honest.” Check out more photos from MJ’s Diamond Celebration below:

He recently admitted he fought his own demons when it came to drugs. In a series of tweets the So So Def Records star revealed he had a serious problem when it came to prescription-strength cough syrup. Apparently Shad was pouring up heavy about 10 years ago and it almost cost him his life. “To the youth- Stop with these dumb ass drugs. Im going to let something out. I missed the chicago show of that tour baltimore show BECAUSE I WAS F***ING HIGH AND SICK!!!! that sh*t is not cool and i was doing it to be cool!” he explained. Shocking news out of the music world today, as TMZ reported moments ago that Mac Miller has passed away . The widely-acclaimed hip hop artist, whose real name was Malcolm James McCormick, was just 26 years old. Though details about Miller’s passing are scarce at the moment, TMZ is reporting that the cause of death appears to be a drug overdose. Miller’s body was found at his home in San Fernando Valley after authorities were contacted by a friend of the rapper’s. He was reportedly pronounced dead on the scene. Though a respected figure on the hip hop scene since the release of his 2011 mixtape “Best Day Ever” and 2012 debut album, Blue Slide Park , Miller is perhaps best known for his personal life. Most notably, his romantic relationship with pop superstar Ariana Grande. Miller and Grande began dating in 2016. The relationship was often described as a whirlwind romance, and the engagement rumors that circulated on multiple occasions were tellingly never denied by either party. Miller dedicated his 2016 album The Divine Feminine to his then-girlfriend and stated in the press that Grande taught him to reflect on the important role that women had played in his life and development. Sadly, in May of 2018, Grande and Miller broke up . According to Grande, his substance abuse played a role in her decision to end the relationship. Shortly after the split, Miller was arrested for a DUI hit and run after he crashed his G-Wagon and fled the scene on foot. He was later apprehended at his home and blew twice the legal limit on a breathalyzer test. When fans blamed Grande for the Miller’s downward spiral, she pushed back on social media. “I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be,” she tweeted. “I have cared for him and tried to support his sobriety & prayed for his balance for years.” Grande added: “Of course I didn’t share about how hard or scary it was while it was happening but it was.” According to TMZ, he had a hard time moving on. In the months following the breakup and Grande’s subsequent engagement to Pete Davidson , friends were instructed not to mention the situation in Miller’s presence. Miller seems to have struggled with substance abuse his entire life, to the point that premature death was a subject that was often on his mind and one that he addressed frequently in his music. He delved into great detail about his addiction to promethazine and codeine (a combination known as “purple drank”) on his 2014 album Faces . Addressing his substance abuse issues in a 2012 interview, Miller had this to say: “I’d rather be the corny white rapper than the drugged-out mess who can’t even get out of his house.” “Overdosing is just not cool. You don’t go down in history because you overdose. You just die.” A profile of Miller was published by Vulture on Thursday and contained this tragically illuminating quote about the rapper’s mindset in his final days. “A lot of times in my life,” he said, “I’ve put this pressure to hold myself to the standard of whatever I thought I was supposed to be, or how I was supposed to be perceived.” He added: “And it creates pressure.” For his last words, publicly anyway, that line is extremely telling. Mac Miller was scheduled to begin a nationwide tour next month. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2018: In Memoriam His final Instagram post features a portion of his song “So It Goes,” which features the lyrics: “Nine lives, never, die, f-ck a heaven, I’m still gettin’ high.” Our thoughts go out to Miller’s loved ones during this difficult time.

A week that started with Ben Affleck seemingly on top of the world, or at least on top of a Playboy model named Shauna Sexton , is sending with the actor possibly hitting rock bottom. He has once again checked into rehab. The actor will be seeking professional assistance for his addiction to alcohol, a source has confirmed to People Magazine. “He is seeking treatment. He knew he needed help and was vocal about it,” says this insider. Multiple outlets say basically the same thing: Affleck was open to treatment and well aware he was in trouble. This decision came just two days after paparazzi snapped photos of what appeared to be a box of alcohol being delivered to Affleck’s home… … and it was also strongly influenced by Affleck’s famous ex-wife, Jennifer Garner. The actress was seen leaving Affleck’s home on Wednesday, visibly upset and shaking. She then returned to this residence later in the day; at which time, Garner, Affleck and an unidentified woman who arrived at the actor’s house with her were photographed in a car Garner was driving. TMZ reports that Garner was dead set on convincing her ex that he needed this trip to rehab, but that Affleck was open to it nearly as soon as their discussion started. As previously stated, Affleck knew he had fallen off the wagon weeks ago and could not continue down this path. He has reportedly drove straight to a “live-in rehab facility” with Garner “and will check in for an extended period of time,” per TMZ. Garner filed for divorce in April of 2017, two years after the stars announced their split. However, the former couple has remained extremely close, even prompting various rumors of a reconciliation, mostly for the sake of raising their three kids. The divorce is not yet final. Garner is pretty much the most mature, reasonable and saintly woman in Hollywood, by everything we can tell. On Monday, Affleck was seen outside of his Palisades home wearing a gray T-shirt and sweatpants as he picked up a Pacifico beer-branded box filled with Johnnie Walker Blue Label scotch whisky in a blue case, along with some other unidentifiable bottles. Sexton, perhaps by coincidence, is on record as saying her favorite drink is whisky. Affleck started seeing this model very recently, not long after he ended a year-long romance with Saturday Night Live producer Lindsay Shookus. He has never really talked publicly about her and hasn’t said much about his split from Garner, either. Just prior to his 46th birthday on August 15, a friend of the actor told People that “Ben is doing well,” adding of his personal struggles: “He continues to focus on himself and the health of his relationships. “He attends meetings, many meetings, and he also does meditation and yoga. “While he still has his moments – and let’s be honest, everyone struggles – he continues to work hard on himself.” Affleck previously checked into rehab in 2001 and also just this past December . We wish him the best. View Slideshow: 25 Celebrities Who Have Been to Rehab
