Peter Jackson in Negotiations to Direct The Hobbit

It looks like the MGM and Warner Bros. strategy of contacting tonally inappropriate directors to helm The Hobbit franchise had paid off better than any strategy associated with MGM in the last year. According to Movieline sister site Deadline, Peter Jackson is fully immersed in negotiations that would place him behind the camera for the two Hobbit films. Feign your total surprise… now.

Peter Jackson Reportedly Negotiating To Direct ‘The Hobbit’

Guillermo del Toro stepped down as director just over three weeks ago. By Eric Ditzian Peter Jackson Photo: MTV News In a stunning development in the long-delayed big-screen adaptation of “The Hobbit,” just over three weeks after Guillermo del Toro abandoned directorial duties , Peter Jackson is reportedly negotiating to step into the director’s chair for the two-part production. Deadline.com reports that Jackson is in the midst of negotiations with Warner Bros., New Line and MGM. Jackson, of course, is intimately familiar with Middle-earth, having directed the three installments of the “Lord of the Rings” franchise and winning the Oscar for directing in 2003. He was already co-writing the “Hobbit” screenplays, based on the 1937 book by J.R.R. Tolkien, and shepherding development as a producer. And while rumors surfaced last week that Jackson was being courted to direct as well, that possibility seemed like wishful thinking for Tolkienites. Both “Hobbit” films are said to be gearing up to shoot back-to-back in Jackson’s native New Zealand. MGM has been waging a very public struggle with financial issues, and Deadline repots that the studio is being encouraged to “loosen the purse strings and make the movies happen.” Since del Toro left the production late last month, after two years of pre-production, directors like David Yates (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”) and Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”) have been rumored to be circling the job. But Jackson and his creative team have reportedly scheduled trips to London and Los Angeles to meet with potential actors, lending further credence to the idea that Jackson will, in fact, take on “Hobbit” directing duties. MTV News’ requests for comment from Jackson’s representative and MGM were not returned as of press time. The Hobbit Now Has Built Sets, But Still No Director

How important is it for The Hobbit to have a director? Apparently, not very! Despite the fact that Guillermo del Toro fled the director’s chair and Peter Jackson doesn’t want the gig, the film has still been auditioning actors in Los Angeles like nothing’s the matter. Now, new pictures have leaked of The Hobbit’s sets, which have already been built in New Zealand.

David Yates Rumored to Direct Hobbit

When Guillermo del Toro left The Hobbit , Hollywood wondered if there was any director who could step in and guide such a massive, effects-laden series while remaining in the stylistic shadow of the auteurs who’d come before. Duh, of course: David Yates, who fulfilled that exact function on the last few installments of the Harry Potter series! Slashfilm notes that his involvement with The Hobbit is just a rumor, but that sound you hear is eight thousand bloggers slapping themselves on the forehead, wondering how they didn’t think of this first. Guillermo del Toro Admits: ‘I am No Longer an Official Voice for The Hobbit’

The Hobbit may be down a director amidst turmoil at MGM, but it keeps moving right along. (Psst, Lost fans: we hear that Widmore and Keamy both went in to read for roles this past week). Since Guillermo del Toro bolted from the production last week, he’s promised to deliver a second statement about just what went down, and that longer missive came late last night. His explanation? Yeah, it was basically that whole “I wanted my life back ever endless delays” thing.

After Years of Work, Guillermo del Toro Bolts From The Hobbit

Guillermo del Toro has been attached to direct The Hobbit for two years, and he’s even been quietly auditioning actors for it over the last month (including one recent alum of Movieline’s Verge feature — guess who!), but it’s been impossible for him to proceed as planned with the Lord of the Rings prequel without a firm greenlight from the in-turmoil, unsold MGM. Therefore, he announced today, he’s leaving the project.
