Jay-Z Hopes To ‘Push The Culture Forward’ With Philly Festival

Jay will headline and curate Budweiser Made in America music festival over Labor Day weekend. By Rob Markman Jay-Z gives a press conference at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Photo: Bill McCay/ FilmMagic PHILADELPHIA — Jay-Z once bragged in song that he beat his assault charges “like Rocky.” Well, it’s been more than a decade since, and Hov — the multiplatinum mogul who remains atop music’s food chain — has done more than simply beat the charge. On Monday morning (May 14), rap’s most magnetic man drew a crowd of reporters and media types to the very steps that the fictional boxer Rocky has made famous. Standing triumphantly at the peak of the staircase of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Hov and Philly Mayor Michael Nutter announced yet another prolific Jay-venture: Budweiser Made in America , a two-day music festival in Philadelphia, this Labor Day weekend. “Everyone knows my love affair with Philly from the amazing, talented artists I’ve signed from here,” Jay said, prompting State Property MC Freeway to jump onstage beside him. Jay-Z will not only headline the festival, he will also curate the three-stage concert, which will feature close to 30 different acts. Still, for the God MC, there are a few things to consider before pulling off stunts such as these. “Whenever I enter into a project, I try to hit on some touch points. The first thing is: Is it great?” Jay asked rhetorically, addressing the crowd, which braved some clouds and drizzle. “The second one is: Is it gonna push the culture forward?” Forward progress is a safe bet: A press release for the upcoming event promises eclectic acts in multiple genres like rock, hip-hop, R&B, Latin and dance music, but the official roster won’t be announced until May 21. The third item Jay considers is the philanthropic opportunities, so once again, he is partnering with United Way. Together, they put on Jigga’s February Carnegie Hall concert in New York, and this time out, they aim to support local charities in both Philly and South New Jersey. The show will be held September 1 and September 2 on Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. Tickets for Made in America will go on sale May 23 through Ticketmaster.com and LiveNation.com . Related Artists Jay-Z

Bryce Harper Facts: Look Out, Chuck Norris!

When Bryce Harper stole home against the Phillies this week – following a beaning Philadelphia pitcher Cole Hamels later admitted was intentional – it was merely the culmination of an impressive set of opening games for the 19-year old phenom. He’s batting over .300. He’s rifled multiple darts to home plate. He’s crashed into walls, stretched singles into doubles and done it all with a reckless, hustling style not seen since Pete Rose. The rising star is an inspiration to baseball fans everywhere, so much so that even Chuck Norris – actor, martial arts god and creator of countless mythical feats of lore – ought to be frightened of the outfielder. After all, did you know… … Bryce Harper is tough enough to make all the other guys named “Bryce” tough; he just chooses not to. … Some say Bryce Harper is not old enough to drink alcohol. Turns out, all of the current alcohol is not properly aged enough to be worthy of his thirst. … Bryce Harper doesn’t actually steal home; home is presented to him at the batter’s box in front of an audience of thousands. … Bryce Harper once threw himself out at home just to see what it was like. … Warning tracks around the Majors are in place to warn the wall that Bryce Harper is coming. … Bryce Harper is soon to become the only player in MLB history to be intentionally walked from the on deck circle. … Bryce Harper’s eye black is actually designed to protect the eyes of mortals from adverse effects of his blinding speed.

Ozzie Guillen, Miami Marlins Manager, Apologizes For Praise of Fidel Castro

Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen is under fire over comments published last week in which he appeared to express his love for Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Guillen, speaking in the Marlins’ dugout before today’s game at Philadelphia, said he plans to fly back to Miami tomorrow morning to face the media and public. He says he feels “guilty” and “embarrassed” and wants to address questions personally after sparking controversy with his remarks to Time magazine. “I want to make everything clear what’s going on. Then people can see me and know what I think,” Guillen said. “I think it’s the proper thing so people can see my eyes.” “I want to get the thing over with. I told the Marlins I want to fly (back) as soon as I can, and tomorrow’s a day off. I don’t want to (talk about it) in Philadelphia.” “I want to be in Miami and clear everything up.” “I want them to know I’m against everything 100 percent – I will repeat it again – the way this man (has been) treating people for the last 60 years.” “I want the people there. Whoever feels about it, ask me any questions. I want you to ask what you ask, because I feel bad? Yes. I feel embarrassed? Yes.” It remains to be seen if that will assuage the masses. A Cuban-American advocacy group in Miami, Vigilia Mambisa, has already called for him to be fired. Guillen told Time last week that he admires and respects Fidel Castro for staying in power so long. He then said he felt sick over the comments in print. He was self-aware enough to realize the response he’d get. “No, not really. I talked to the media already in Cincinnati about it, and I expected this was going to happen,” he said when asked if he was surprised. “I feel badly, because I don’t want to say (it was taken) out of context. I think it was kind of a cheap shot. But I’ve got to face it,” Guillen told reporters. “Like I said, I feel sad and (for) a couple days, I feel sick to my stomach, not because of what I did. Just because I know I hurt a lot of people.” The Marlins issued a statement clarifying that they have no respect for Castro, “a brutal dictator who has caused unthinkable pain for more than 50 years.”

‘Twins’ May Find Long-Lost Triplet In Eddie Murphy

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito may reunite for ‘Triplets,’ the sequel to the 1988 comedy ‘Twins.’ By Gil Kaufman Eddie Murphy Photo: Getty Images Some old movie franchises never die, they just go into the deep freeze for, oh, almost a quarter century. Case in point: “Twins.” Surely you remember the hit high-concept 1988 comedy starring then-huge actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his half-sized “brother” Danny DeVito? The goofball premise had the two stumbling through wacky adventures, with the, ahem, intellectual, physically perfect Julius (Arnold) struggling to connect with his long-lost small-time crook fraternal twin bro Vincent (DeVito) after the pair were separated at birth. Bottom line: The movie grossed more than $200 million worldwide, and now, Universal Pictures is hoping to reboot the franchise nearly 25 years later. There is, of course, a new twist: Not only would the former California governor and the “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” star be reprising their roles, but they would find out that the mad scientists who created them also cooked up a third brother. Cue “Triplets,” with third comedic wheel Eddie Murphy. The Hollywood Reporter said no director is connected to the flick yet, but noted that original director Ivan Reitman, would be onboard as a producer through his Montecito Picture Co. banner. The backers are still looking for writers to work up a script, and while the actors are reportedly attached to star, the studios have not yet sat down to discuss the creative aspect of the project. The film could be a boon for Murphy, who is coming off yet another box-office bomb with the long-delayed “A Thousand Words,” while Schwarzenegger is still attempting to revive his acting career after two terms as California governor and a nasty split from his wife, Maria Shriver. DeVito has continued to appear in mostly under-the-radar films for the past five to six years, but has a solid hit on his hands at the moment as the voice of “The Lorax.”

Usher And Diplo Found ‘Chemistry’ On ‘Climax’

In-demand producer/DJ also talks to MTV News about upcoming projects with No Doubt, Snoop Dogg, more. By Zachary Swickey Diplo performs in Madison, Wisconsin, on Tuesday Photo: Evan Scott/MTV News MADISON, Wisconsin — It was just four years ago that Diplo put his production prowess on full display with M.I.A.’s mega-hit “Paper Planes.” Since then, the DJ/producer has become a go-to producer for major acts like Usher, whose latest single, R&B jam “Climax,” features work from the Philadelphia native. On Tuesday, MTV News hit up the first stop on the campus-themed AXE One Night Only Tour in Wisconsin, and we caught up with the headlining DJ to talk about his upcoming projects. “We got really luck on that one,” he said of the track from Usher’s upcoming album. “We just had great chemistry. I was super-nervous working with him the first two days. … The way we did it, it was just a super-open format. He was down to do whatever we were excited about. “I love Usher,” Diplo gushed. “I’m an Usher fan. I love him for records like ‘Confessions Pt. II’ and ‘Burn,’ those are some of the first R&B records from my generation that are still lasting forever. And we did some uptempo stuff too. I don’t know what’ll make the album, but I think there are definitely three songs that’ll make it.” Diplo is currently involved with a number of projects and luckily he was willing to dish. After working last summer with No Doubt on their upcoming record , the producer revealed he had good news to share. “We just finished. I was actually in Jamaica last month and I went in and did some extra stuff on that record,” he told us. “I’m super-excited. It’s probably going to be a single for their album. They’ve been [tweeting] about the song, so they’re excited about it. I think it’s going to be a ‘No Doubt featuring Major Lazer’ record, because we were producers, and there’s another artist on it, too, that we recorded in Jamaica. “But you’ll have to wait,” Diplo warned, “I don’t know how far off that record is, but every song I’ve heard is a bona-fide hit. ‘ The superstar DJ also recently took to his Facebook page and casually mentioned that he’s already started production on 18 tracks for a record with Snoop Dogg . “Snoop Dogg is an icon, man; he’s bigger than the music,” Diplo said. “What we’re doing is a reggae record. It’s like Snoop Dogg and Major Lazer together. It’s all reggae and he’s singing and he’s doing a f—ing awesome job and I never knew it, but he had his heart in every song. … We’re going to get back into the production of it next month, and I’m really proud of that record. It’s the first record I’ve ever executive-produced and his crew is amazing. Related Artists Diplo Usher

One Direction Announce Headlining U.S. Tour

Chart-topping British boy band will kick off tour on May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Redferns With their record-breaking debut album, Up All Night, topping the charts , One Direction plan to hit the road for their first-ever headlining tour in the States. The U.K. boy band will kick off the trek May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia, as part of a North American tour set to wrap up on July 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with stops along the way in cities like Chicago, New York, Atlanta and Las Vegas. News of the guys’ tour comes as Up All Night made One Direction the first British group to have a debut album at #1 on the Billboard 200 on Wednesday (March 21). U.S. hysteria for the guys has been over-the-top, with hard-core fans wildly greeting them at stops all over the country. But one of the 1D fellas, Niall Horan, explained to MTV News that the band’s truly appreciative of all the fan love . “No way were we expecting it to do anything like that,” he said of enthusiasm for the album in the States. “We haven’t spent that much time out here and obviously not a lot of people know us, but the power of our fans, they never seem to stop amazing us. They’re absolutely brilliant and they’ve bought the album in great numbers.” Want the scoop on One Direction’s dapper boy-band style? Head over to MTV Style! This won’t be the guys’ first tour in America, though. Earlier this year One Direction toured with Big Time Rush, and things got pretty crazy, according to Horan. “Since we’ve been here, we did Radio City [Music Hall in New York] with Big Time Rush, and when we were leaving the venue, there was a lot of people waiting outside for us and it was like the movies,” he recalled. “We were trying to drive away. [Fans] were running through traffic. It was literally like something you’d see in a movie.” It doesn’t seem the hysteria is going to die down anytime soon. Before 1D even hit the road in May, they’ll perform at the Kids’ Choice Awards on March 31, and then they’ll take the “Saturday Night Live” stage a week later, on April 7. And all this buzz around the five Brits has fans wondering if they might be getting their own show on Nickelodeon . But Horan said that’s not the case, for now at least. “We’ve just been doing stuff with Nickelodeon. They’ve been brilliant to us; they’ve been really good to us. [But] there’s no sign of a TV show,” he said. “We haven’t heard anything. We’re obviously doing the Kids’ Choice and stuff, but there’s no deal been done or anything [for a show]. They’re just kind of helping us out, I suppose.” One Direction tour dates so far, according to band’s record label:
