Via CNN: Boxing great Joe Frazier, who went toe to toe three times with Muhammad Ali, including the famous “Thrilla in Manila” fight, is seriously ill with liver cancer and is in a hospice, his personal and business manager said Saturday. Frazier, 67, is in a Philadelphia facility, manager Leslie Wolff said. The former heavyweight champion was diagnosed just four or five weeks ago. “He’s a true gentleman,” Wolff said. “Along with Muhammad Ali, (he is) one of the two most recognizable athletes in the world.” Frazier, nicknamed “Smokin’ Joe,” used his devastating left hook with impunity during his professional career, retiring with a 32-4-1 record. Frazier, the son of a South Carolina sharecropper, boxed during the glory days of the heavyweight division, going up against greats George Foreman, Oscar Bonavena, Joe Bugner and Jimmy Ellis. But it was his three much-hyped fights against Ali that helped seal his legend. Frazier bested Ali at 1971′s “Fight of the Century” at Madison Square Garden. In the 15th round, Frazier landed perhaps the most famous left hook in history, catching Ali on the jaw and dropping the former champ for a four-count, according to Frazier’s bio at the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Frazier left the ring still the champ after handing Ali his first professional defeat. Fans and well-wishers were encouraged to post their thoughts and prayers at joefrazierscorner.com. We pray that “Smokin’ Joe” will be able to overcome the cancer battle. More On Bossip! Careers From The Crib: Top Ten Work From Home Jobs That Make The Most Money He Wants That Old Thang Back! “We’re not very good at deciding song names,” Marcus Mumford laughs about tune, which will be called “Ghosts That We Knew” or “Ghosts.” By James Montgomery Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons Photo: Gus Stewart/ Getty Images They’ve been working on the follow-up to their breakout (on both sides of the pond) Sigh No More album since early 2011 and have been road-testing new material during a recent run of U.S. summer shows . But now, finally, Mumford & Sons have given fans a proper taste of what they can expect on their upcoming album. The problem is, they can’t seem to settle on a name for the new track. Called either “Ghosts That We Knew” or, simply, “Ghosts” (“We’re not very good at deciding song names,” frontman Marcus Mumford laughed, “we’ll hash it out, we’ll have a physical fight later”), Mumford & Sons unveiled the brand-new song during a performance at Philadelphia station Radio 104.5 . Regardless of the title they settle on, there’s a pretty good chance their fanbase is going to be rather happy. Because, frankly, the song is a stunner, rolling along on a rail of acoustic guitar, banjo and accordion, while Mumford keens about a love destroyed (“You saw no fault/ No cracks in my heart/ And you kneel beside/ My hope torn apart/ But the ghosts that we knew, will flicker from view/ Will live a long life”) and the misguided hope that all can be repaired (“So give me hope in the darkness/ That I will see the light/ Because oh, it gave me such a fright/ But I will hope as long as you like/ Just promise me we’ll be all right”). There’s a hushed majesty to it all, a muted sense of despair and grace, and it finds them building on their Bluegrass roots. Shoot, Mumford even replicates the staggered “I-I-I-I” that helped propel “The Cave” to smash status both here in the States and back home in England. There’s still no official release date for the follow-up to Sigh (it is reportedly set for February), but based on “Ghosts,” that disc can’t come soon enough for Mumford’s fans. Hopefully, they’ll figure out all the song titles by then. What are you expecting from the next Mumford album? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Mumford & Sons
Ambition Twitter campaign might lead to release of remix featuring T.I. and Lil Wayne, Maybach Music Group artist tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Nadeska Alexis Meek Mill Photo: MTV News Since banding together earlier this year, the members of Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group have shown a tremendous amount of support for one another. With Wale dropping his sophomore album, Ambition, Tuesday (November 1), MMG artists have extended love to their labelmate, even changing all of their Twitter avatars to Wale’s LP cover art. To take things a step further, Meek Mill promised to release his highly anticipated remix of “I’ma Boss” on Tuesday if enough people tweeted about Wale’s album. “The ‘I’ma Boss’ remix: We gonna do a Twitter campaign; you gotta tweet Wale’s album. If we get enough tweets of Wale’s album, we’re gonna drop the remix on ’em,” Meek told MTV News on Friday after performing at the Powerhouse concert in Philadelphia . “I was working on my verse yesterday in the studio,” Meek teased of the remix, which boasts features from T.I., Lil Wayne and others: “I put Tip’s verse on the beat, we got Khaled in there somewhere, we got Wayne in there, Swizz [Beatz].” Mill’s original “I’ma Boss” first surfaced toward the end of 2010. It was a slow build, but the Rick Ross-assisted track began to catch fire in May after it was included on MMG’s Self Made Vol. 1 compilation. The track went on to become one of the hottest rap songs of the summer, and a remix was in order. In an August interview with Vibe, Meek said he’d hold the release of the record so he could get a verse from T.I., who was incarcerated at the time. “If I hold the ‘I’ma Boss’ remix long enough, I might throw Tip on that — have him get out to the hottest song of the year,” he said. “He ain’t have no problem looking out for me, and I don’t have no problem doing it for him.” Are you eager to hear Meek Mill’s remix of “I’ma Boss”? This heifer… You would think after all those months in jail and the loss of her daughter, and arguably being given a second chance at life that she shouldn’t have gotten, Casey Anthony would be doing her best to live right, right? Nope. Casey Anthony showed up to her monthly probation meeting yesterday evening and is living a typical American life: She has no money, no job, and she’s been drinking, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. As we’ve mentioned before, Anthony’s terms of probation allow her to drink alcohol, but she’s not allowed to “consume alcoholic beverages to the extent that your normal faculties are impaired.” According to the DOC, Anthony “says she did not drink to excess” and didn’t do any illegal drugs either. Although Anthony’s terms of probation stipulate that she must “work diligently at a lawful occupation,” she’s not, even though she’s been offered $500,000 to work for Larry Flynt. The DOC says she’s not attending vocational or educational classes either, so exactly WTF she’s doing is anyone’s guess. “Currently, no violations have been noted,” the DOC says. “Her probation officer continues to supervise her based on the conditions set forth by the court.” And her money problems are probably about to get worse: Casey is currently being sued by the woman who’s life has been destroyed by Casey’s lying. Disguised in sunglasses and a baseball cap, Casey Anthony was deposed Saturday for a civil lawsuit that accuses her of ruining another woman’s reputation. Attorneys for Zenaida Gonzalez used videoconferencing to question Anthony, who was at an undisclosed location in Florida. John Morgan, who is representing Gonzalez, said he asked Anthony about the disappearance of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony told detectives in 2008 that Caylee had been kidnapped by a nanny named Zenaida Gonzalez. Detectives said no such baby sitter existed. Morgan’s client, who has the same name as the fictional baby sitter, has sued Anthony, claiming her reputation was ruined. Anthony answered few questions and her attorney, Charles Greene, repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment, Morgan said. The Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects witnesses from being forced to incriminate themselves. “I think there were times where some of the questions irritated her,” Morgan said, pointing to questions about her mother and father, and her brother’s testimony. Morgan said Anthony tried to disguise herself by wearing a Philadelphia Phillies baseball cap and long, thick black hair that appeared to be from a wig. She also wore a large pair of Dolce and Gabbana sunglasses, Morgan said. He described her as “not happy to be there.” She couldn’t even make up a fake name that wasn’t going to f*** her life up? Get it together, Casey. Source 1 Source 2
It is not looking good for the NBA. The entire preseason has been canceled and Commissioner David Stern has threatened the loss of regular season games if a deal is not reached by Monday (Oct. 10th). A few of the league’s high profile players have already sensed the season was in jeopardy and signed on to play overseas. Turns out Stephon Marbury and Allen Iverson had a crystal ball. Sure no NBA team wanted to touch them with a ten-foot pole the last two years, but joke’s on you David Stern. The two malcontents have been cashing those overseas checks early, in China and Turkey respectively, possibly inspiring the current crop of defectors. Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs just announced that he’s taking his talents back to his native France next year. While it is highly unlikely after the banner year the league just had that the entire NBA season will be lost, there is a possibility the regular season will be shortened. Never fear, people. Check out the top 5 ways to pass the time while you wait for the players and owners to kiss and make up. 5) Video Game Therapy Fire up your favorite gaming system and get in a little NBA2K action. Sure the rookies aren’t in the game, but don’t let that stop you. What better way to make sure your favorite team wins the NBA title than by taking things into your own hands? Go ahead and channel your inner LeBron , give Kobe 50 shots in a game and break Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 100 points. Still don’t feel better? 4) Get to know the international teams Never heard of Virtus Bologna , you say? ASVEL ? Better get on Google and do some research. Yeah the Olympics are a year away, but expect to see Kobe Bryant making the trek to Italy to ball if the lockout is not over soon. Deron Williams was the first to make the leap to Turkey followed by Tony Parker (pictured right) signing with his native French team ASVEL for about $2000 a month. Talk about a recession. 3) Reminisce No basketball? No problem. Some of the NBA stars past and present have ventured into the world of Hip Hop with, ahem, mixed results. Pass the time by dusting off that old Shaquille O’Neal single “What’s Up, Doc?” featuring The Fu-Schnickens or fire up Youtube and check out Shaq flowing with the Wu-Tang on “No Hook” . Maybe the aforementioned Allen Iverson has time to put out that oft-delayed, highly anticipated album he crafted while back with the Philadelphia 76ers under his alter ego Jewelz . Wait, he did release it? Well, why not take a listen to “Non Fiction” and see what A.I.’s got? “40 Bars” , anyone? It can’t be any worse than Kobe rapping in Italian with Tyra Banks screeching on the hook. 2) Hoop Dreams You got handle like CP3 , you can put up points like Kevin Durant at The Rucker, and you got a one-leg fadeaway shot better than Dirk Nowitzki ? If the real players won’t take the court maybe the owners will take a look at you, right? This ain’t baseball folks, no replacement players will be called in. Best to showcase your stuff at the aforementioned Rucker Park and hope Durant doesn’t catch you on camera with a pull up three. 1) Watch other sports Welp, the good news is the NFL decided to have a season so there’s still football, but if the entire NBA season is lost what is there to watch? Fear not NBA aficionados. Figure the NFL will be over in first week of February, around the same time NASCAR has its own super bowl of racing in its very first race of the year! Who can’t get hyped for the pageantry, the prestige of the Daytona 500 ? Then in the middle of February baseball pitchers and catchers report to training camps for Spring Training. If that doesn’t get your juices flowing, get ready to scour the transaction wire for the wheeling and dealing that went down for the winter meetings so you can get your fantasy baseball team right. How about some bowling? That’s a favorite past time of NBA players. Take a trip down to Lucky Strike in Times Square and you may run into Carmelo Anthony or Baron Davis . At least there’s college basketball, right? Track and field? Yeah, this lockout needs to end quickly. Is Michael Vick on the verge of a meltdown behind his team’s poor play?? Michael Vick was scheduled to host a show this season on Monday nights on WIP in Philadelphia. Two weeks ago, he couldn’t make it because he suffered a concussion the night before. Last week, he was a no-show for some ill-defined reason. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that Vick will no longer participate in the show moving forward despite having helped promote the show before the season. Vick did the show once. The “Chickie and Pete’s Players Lounge” rolled on Monday night and didn’t explain why Vick wasn’t there. Clay Harbor replaced Vick. Look, we’re not saying this is front page news. But it’s fair to wonder ask: Would Vick have dropped out of the Monday night show if the Eagles were 3-1 instead of 1-3? Vick overcame years away from the game to become a top quarterback again last year. But now he faces a different sort of adversity, losing five of his last six starts dating back to last year. How Vick responds to this new challenge will be one of the stories of this NFL season. This season will be filled with challenges for Michael Vick and the emotional toll it’s taking on him is apparent in his last few post-game press conferences. With the media scrutinizing every word he utters, perhaps quitting this show was advised by his team of handlers that want to shield him from criticism. Source
