3OH!3, Travie McCoy, Cobra Starship Rocked For A Good Cause On Too Fast For Love Tour

Students who won concert tickets talk winning MTV’s GYT: Get Yourself Tested campus challenge. By Alexandria Bradshaw 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News MTV’s Too Fast For Love Tour drew to a close on June 11, in Philadelphia, after kicking off back in April. And headliners Cobra Starship, Travie McCoy and 3OH!3 performed for a good cause: The concert festival was organized to raise awareness of and promote testing for sexually transmitted diseases. The sold-out crowd included students from Roger Williams University, who packed the front row after crushing the competition in the GYT: Get Yourself Tested Campus Challenge. In winning the contest, those students underlined the importance of getting tested for STDs. And on Sunday, which marks annual National HIV Testing Day, you can do the same. A wealth of information on how to track down free HIV-testing locations and events is available at MTV’s GYTnow.org . Readers can also find important facts about HIV-AIDS and tips on how to bring up testing with partners or health-care providers. The campus challenge was part of the MTV-sponsored GYT campaign, mounted in response to some alarming statistics. Among them is the fact that one in two young people will get an STD by age 25 — many without knowing it. The GYT campaign seeks to create a social movement around getting tested. Aimed specifically at college students, RWU beat out 166 schools this year for the top spot in the challenge by successfully recruiting a little more than 500 participants who agreed to undergo testing. Kirstie Goodwin, a rising junior and one of RWU’s Student Health and Wellness Educators, or H.A.W.E.S., led RWU to the win, recruiting 30 percent of the final tally. “I think raising awareness can make a difference. A lot of people on campus didn’t realize that [RWU] Health Services even does testing,” she said. “After we did the GYT campus challenge, they ran out of HIV tests in Health Services because so many people wanted to get tested.” “Sexual health and sexuality have always been on RWU’s radar,” said Donna Darmody, director of health education for the H.A.W.E.S. program. “Students are encouraged to have honest talks about sex right from the get-go because they are comfortable about the topic; they’re more inclined to be safe.” Exclusive footage from the Too Fast For Love Tour, as well as blog posts by winning students about their trip to Philly is available on Think.MTV.com . Bam Margera’s Alleged Assailant To Stand Trial

Elizabeth Ray, 59, is accused of beating Margera with a pipe outside his Pennsylvania nightclub. By Gil Kaufman Bam Margera Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images The 59-year-old woman accused of assaulting “Viva La Bam” star Bam Margera outside a suburban Philadelphia nightclub he owns on June 12 has been held over for trial. According to the Philadelphia Daily News , a district court judge ruled on Thursday that Elizabeth Ray would be held for trial on aggravated assault and related counts. Ray, who has said she’s innocent in the case, lives near the Note, a club Margera, 30, owns in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Margera was allegedly assaulted by Ray with a bat-like object following a noise complaint at the Note earlier this month. Ray was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault and two counts of reckless endangerment; she posted $10,000 bail shortly after her arrest. Margera said that he was waiting for a ride home around 2 a.m. when he got into a verbal altercation with Ray and that he was walking away after he thought the argument ended and then collapsed to the ground, suffering a concussion and a large cut to his head after being struck. According to the News, a woman who was with Margera said she saw Ray holding a long, pipe-like object. Pal Tammy Palumbo told the paper that after Margera tumbled to the ground she cradled his head in her lap as Ray began yelling at her. With Margera unconscious and bleeding, Palumbo claimed that Ray threatened, “I’ll hit him again and I’ll make sure I kill him next time.” In a court appearance on Thursday, Margera claimed he exited the club to smoke a cigarette after closing time and Palumbo followed him to a back alley next to Ray’s property. “She yelled, ‘Get off my sidewalk’ to me,” Palumbo testified. “I didn’t even know I was standing in front of someone’s house.” At the time of the incident, Ray professed her innocence to the Daily News, claiming that Margera used racial slurs during their initial argument about the noise. “He called me the n-word,” she said. “I’m innocent, and he’s a jackass, just like his movies.” During testimony, Margera said he got into a shouting match with Ray after she berated Palumbo, the latest in a series of verbal altercations between him and his alleged assailant. “It was kind of a shouting match,” he said. “I was so busy yelling I didn’t hear what she was saying.” Margera denied that he used a racial slur during the argument. Ray’s home shares a wall with Margera’s bar and she often complained about noise from the establishment; to compensate, Margera told the judge that he had his bar manager pay one month’s rent for Ray when the pub opened last year. The complaints continued, however, apparently boiling over into the incident that caused Margera to miss out on a recent shoot for a climactic scene in the upcoming “Jackass 3-D” movie .

“Jihad, Crips, extreme animal-rights activists, it’s all the same,” Says Homeland Security Official

Last week a Philadelphia appellate court announced (after months of silence) that it would not revisit the conviction of animal rights activists on terrorism charges. The SHAC 7 were convicted of conspiring to commit animal enterprise terrorism by running a controversial website that posted news of both legal and illegal actions, along with personal information of people connected to the notorious animal testing lab Huntingdon Life Sciences. Their campaign had brought the multinational corporation near bankruptcy. A three-judge panel of the court had previously upheld the conviction, and the defendants had asked that the full court review it. Now, the only option is to request that the Supreme Court of the United States review the case. There has been no official word about this yet, but multiple defendants have expressed their interest and having this landmark First Amendment case heard by the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the lead prosecutor who helped secure this “victory in the War on Terrorism” has– surprise, surprise– been promoted. Charles McKenna is now the head of the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness. He was quoted a few days ago about his hopes for using new “anti-terrorism technology” in his new job. “We are particularly interested in computer profiling, which is much more sophisticated, and quicker, than traditional racial profiling,” he said. The targets of this new profiling technology? “Jihad, Crips, extreme animal-rights activists, it’s all the same: people trying damage the system,” added McKenna.“We need every trick in the book to avert disaster.” As you can see in this photo, the SHAC 7 are quite gangsta. But no reasonable person could argue that they are the “same” as violent street gangs and Islamic terrorists. Such absurd scare-mongering rhetoric has become normal for corporations, industry groups, and the politicians who represent them. When it is adopted by government officials who are in charge of keeping us safe, though, it has frightening implications. There are limited anti-terrorism and law enforcement resources. When people like McKenna let shameless political opportunism shape security priorities (and make no mistake, this is nothing but political opportunism–he has already been rewarded for defending the “system” from activists), it puts everyone at risk. added by: animalia_libero

Media Reality Check: Team Obama’s Grubby Federal Job-Dangling Is Not News to ABC, CBS, and NBC

On February 18, Rep. Joe Sestak, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania, revealed in a Philadelphia TV interview that the Obama White House offered him a job in an effort to talk him out of opposing Sen. Arlen Specter, who’d recently switched parties. Network interviewers asked the White House for comment, but the network news bosses at ABC, CBS, and NBC kept any mention of this possible quid pro quo off the airwaves of their morning and evening news programs for more than three months. Then ten days after Sestak defeated Specter, the White House issued a brief statement on the Friday afternoon heading into the Memorial Day weekend, claiming they asked former President Bill Clinton to offer Sestak an unpaid position on a presidential advisory board. That drew perfunctory reports on Friday night and some brief mentions over the holiday weekend. During the following week, the White House narrative fell apart, since Sestak could not serve on these advisory boards as a member of Congress. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs obfuscated and dodged reporters when peppered with questions, which led to some newspaper and cable coverage, but ABC, CBS and NBC all blacked out the story as it crumbled. Then Andrew Romanoff, a Democratic Senate candidate in Colorado, emerged with a similar story, complete with a White House e-mail he received that touted several positions in foreign aid programs he could have. This spurred two network morning show stories, but the networks weren’t acknowledging any kind of scandal was occurring. There’s now been 12 days of network silence on Team Obama’s Sestak maneuvering. Media Research Center analysts monitored all network morning and evening news coverage in 2010 on Sestak’s Senate campaign. The Sestak job-offer scandal drew only nine stories or mentions on the three networks. NBC offered only one evening anchor brief. CBS featured an evening anchor brief, a morning anchor brief, and a Saturday night interview where analyst John Dickerson dismissed the scandal. ABC did the most with five offerings: three stories or discussions on World News, and two on Good Morning America. All of these nine segments were contained within the Memorial Day weekend. It sounded odd for ABC’s Jonathan Karl to announce on May 28 that “after months of dodging questions,” Team Obama offered an answer. How would anyone watching just network news have any idea the story wasn’t brand new? The networks even failed to note developments on their own Sunday interview programs. On May 23, Sestak dodged questions on CBS’s Face the Nation and NBC’s Meet the Press, while ABC’s This Week ran a soundbite of the February interview with Sestak in Philadelphia. But none of the networks aired a second of the Sestak story until the following Friday night. Only ABC reported a full story that Friday evening. On CBS, anchor Katie Couric offered only a 30-second brushoff. Couric’s sense of its news value was summed up seconds later when she followed that with a light story about frogs: “Thousands of them have been disrupting traffic along a busy highway in northern Greece for days now. And why did the frogs cross the road? To get to the food on the other side.” NBC anchor Brian Williams offered a 73-second anchor brief with a no-news-here tone: “The story got out back in February, and the White House, as the President pledged yesterday, set the record straight today.” Williams signaled his lack of interest by putting that story after a two-minute obituary for ‘80s child star Gary Coleman. That was the only time NBC’s morning and evening newscasts have touched the story, even as MSNBC star Chris Matthews declared the whole Clinton-offer story “a big case of bluffing and BS.” ABC offered the most follow-up, offering a story on Saturday’s Good Morning America and a question to Jake Tapper on Sunday’s morning show. They also threw Tapper a Sestak question on Saturday’s World News, and a Sestak question to ABC political analyst Rick Klein on Sunday night’s newscast. CBS added a few touches over the Memorial Day weekend as well. CBS threw in an anchor brief on Saturday’s Early Show and a couple of questions on Saturday’s Evening News to political analyst John Dickerson, who insisted Democrats saw nothing wrong and Republicans “don’t own the leverage of power to actually force an investigation, so it might just die there.” Especially if the networks want it to die there. The only time CBS offered a full report came on The Early Show on June 3, when White House correspondent Chip Reid reported on the Andrew Romanoff case. ABC mentioned Romanoff briefly on its morning show, but NBC never did. None of the three evening news shows have touched the Romanoff story at all. The networks cannot plausibly claim that this job-dangling is not a news story because it’s a commonly sleazy practice – not after years of claiming the choice of Obama was so idealistic and inspiring. Their inaction not only ignores Obama’s yellowed promises to be transparent and accountable, but also Joe Sestak’s new pledge on the night he defeated Specter that “accountability has been missing for far too long, and I want to help bring it back.”

Drake ‘Didn’t Respect’ Lil’ Kim Dissing Nicki Minaj

‘That just wasn’t G to me at all,’ he tells MTV’s ‘Sucker Free’ of Kim’s onstage comments. By Shaheem Reid Drake and Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Drake said that, even without an album, Nicki Minaj is the best female MC to ever do it. So the 23-year-old MC was pretty ticked off at Lil’ Kim and Ray J’s recent onstage comments that Minaj is biting Kim’s style and that Nicki needs to pay homage to her. Drake elaborated on his anger while talking to DJ Envy on MTV’s “Sucker Free” over the weekend. “I feel like Lil’ Kim is a G in the game. I feel like you’re a part of an era that’s classic, that we’ll never forget as young kids, me and Nick,” he said of his Young Money family member. “You don’t have to do that. You don’t have to get onstage and tell people to pay homage; that’s a given. I’ve watched Nicki pay homage time and time again. I didn’t respect [Kim’s comments] at all. Whoever else was onstage with her, I didn’t respect that at all. You just wearing your heat on your sleeve. You’re showing that you’re upset. Nobody’s done that to me yet. I would never expect Jay or ‘Ye to get onstage and be like, ‘Pay homage to me. You need to respect me.’ They know they command my respect with their music and talent. I feel that’s signs you’re just losing it. I really did take that personally. That bothered me. I really don’t get caught up with the Twitter and Internet stuff, but I did see it. And I feel like you’re supposed to be a G. That just wasn’t G to me at all.” For her part, Lil’ Kim told Philadelphia radio host Kendra G on Philly 100.3 on Saturday that “all females that come in the game, we need to stick together, and I always try my best to embrace them. But what happens is, when they come in the game and they realize that I’m not going away, and my fans are still here and they can’t just step on me, they get upset, and then they don’t want to be my friend anymore. I think that’s really childish and stupid. Because all I ask for is respect, and I show the same respect back. Pay homage. At the end of the day, a lot of things go on behind the scenes that people don’t know about. It will be aired out, because you can’t hide the truth.” Nicki hasn’t spoken in public about Kim’s comments, but she has hinted on her Twitter page that she is taking the high road. “Raise ya hand if u don’t have 2 diss ppl to feel better about urself,” she wrote on Thursday. “Jealousy is a disease. It kills @ a fast pace. Kisses 2 my bad bi—es” Do you think Lil’ Kim was out of line in her comments to Nicki Minaj? Let us know below! Related Artists Nicki Minaj Drake
