‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Sequel Coming To Nickelodeon

Cable network green-lights ‘The Legend of Korra’ cartoon, but film sequel’s future is unclear. By Eric Ditzian Noah Ringer in “The Last Airbender” Photo: Paramount While the fate of a possible sequel to “The Last Airbender” remains in doubt, the small-screen version on which it is based — the Nickelodeon cartoon “Avatar: The Last Airbender” — is getting a second life. MTV News has confirmed that the cable channel is prepping a sequel to its popular anime-inspired series, which ran for three seasons and ended in 2008. The installment’s working title is “The Legend of Korra,” and it will premiere on Nickelodeon in 2011. The channel will reportedly base “Korra” on the mythology of “Airbender,” in which various nations can control water, fire, earth or air. The new show picks up 70 years after the events of the first series and will follow a teen girl named Korra, a so-called avatar who can control three of the world’s elements and is seeking to master air. “Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern ‘Avatar’ world, Republic City — a metropolis that is fueled by Steampunk technology,” a Nickelodeon press release says. “It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive.

Blogger Reports on Radical Imam Visit, Local Journalist Yawns

As most of the country was getting ready for the long July 4 weekend, Pajamas Media blogger and anti-terrorism consultant Patrick Poole wrote a post entitled ” Blue Suede Jihad: Major Hamas Fundraiser in the Land of Elvis .” According to Poole, the Masjid Al-Noor mosque in Memphis posted an event entitled “A Weekend with Mohammed al-Hanooti” for the non-weekend dates of July 13 through 15 on its website . He has a screenshot of the mosque’s event page and says that it is genuine, however, local Memphis newspaper The Commercial Appeal’s Michael Lollar disputed Poole’s findings in an article entitled ” Hamas fundraiser not speaking at mosque .” Lollar only addressed the side of the mosque’s administrators. According to Poole, Lollar made no attempt to contact him and Lollar’s language in the article was dismissive of Poole’s post, to the point of making it seem as though independently verifiable facts used by Poole were merely allegations and suppositions. “Blogger Patrick Poole wrote on the Pajamas Media site (pajamasmedia.com) that Al-Hanooti had raised millions of dollars for Hamas . . .” Lollar wrote, seemingly ignoring the data Poole was able to gather on al-Hanooti, all of it from government documents. That is just plain lazy reporting. The allegation that someone like al-Hanooti, with his very real ties to Hamas, could be on a fundraising tour of the mid-west for them, is one that ought to be taken seriously. Good reporting would have tried to get to the bottom of the controversy, decent reporting would have at least gotten a hold of Poole, but this was just plain lazy reporting. While Poole’s post left out the chronology of events, al-Hanooti has a very interesting history and a tendancy to appear in legal cases involving terrorism and terrorist financing. A Palestinian born in Haifa, he came to the United States in 1978 and first came to the attention of law enforcement in the early 90’s, when he was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator at the trial of the Blind Sheikh, Omar Abdel Rahman. In 1993 the FBI learned from electronic surveillance that al-Hanooti attended a meeting of Hamas supporters and fundraisers in Philadelphia where they pledged to ensure the Oslo Accords failed. An FBI source said that al-Hanooti had raised “over six million US dollars” for Hamas by 1993. Additionally, al-Hanooti was Imam of the Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Virginia from 1995 to 1999 and seems to have played a role in making it fertile ground for its later radical connections, including two of the September 11 hijackers, the Fort Hood shooter and Anwar al-Awlaki. However, it is important to note that Hamas was not considered a terrorist organization for the purposes of American law until 1995 and there appears to be no evidence he raised money for Hamas since 1993, except for assisting in rasing money to pay for a Hamas leader’s legal defense . None of this excuses the fact that Hamas is a terrorist organization, regardless of weather a government explicitly marks it as such. Al-Hanooti has made radical statements and fundraised for Hamas in the past, though his current opinions are unknown and a repudiation of violence is always something to hope for from anyone.

A Look Back At Live Aid, By The Numbers

We celebrate the 25th anniversary of the groundbreaking charity concert by breaking out the calculators. By James Montgomery Bono performs at Live Aid on July 13, 1985 Photo: Peter Still/ Redferns Twenty-five years ago Tuesday (July 13), Bob Geldof and Midge Ure moved mountains, arranged satellites and assuaged rock-star egos to pull off one of the most monumental concerts in history. Live Aid, the transatlantic charity bash , brought together the biggest names in music — all of whom played for free — on two massive stages in London and Philadelphia, beamed their performances out to the entire world (including here in the U.S. on a fledgling cable network called MTV) and managed to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for famine relief in Ethiopia. It was, shall we say, a pretty incredible event — one Geldof rather shockingly booked in roughly three weeks, mostly on a whim (he was knighted for his efforts). And it’s not exactly hyperbole to say that it changed the world and defined an entire generation. So in celebration of Live Aid’s 25th anniversary, we decided to break out the calculators and crunch the numbers a bit. Here are some of the figures that helped make history. 1.5 billion : The estimated number of viewers who tuned in to watch the concerts, in 100 different countries. 150 million pounds : The amount that Live Aid raised for famine relief in Ethiopia. It works out to some $245 million U.S. 162,000 : The number of people who attended the two main Live Aid concerts — 72,000 in London’s Wembley Stadium and 90,000 in Philadelphia’s JFK Stadium. There were, of course, other concerts held in conjunction with Live Aid, in Sydney (OZ for Africa) and Cologne, Germany, to name a few. Bands also taped performances from Moscow, Japan, Austria, Norway and Yugoslavia. 70 : As best as we can count (using detailed Live Aid sites like this one ), this was the total number of acts/artists that performed on the stages in London and Philadelphia. It’s a list that includes Madonna, U2, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Elton John, Queen, Black Sabbath, Run-DMC, Santana, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Neil Young, the remaining three members of Led Zeppelin, Duran Duran, Bob Dylan and Tina Turner. Of course, we’re not counting the prince and princess of Wales (who appeared at Wembley), any of the celebs who introduced all the acts, everyone who joined in for the group finales at either concert or the artists who appeared in taped performances from around the globe. If you really want to get technical, here’s a list of everyone — musician, actor, comedian, royalty — who participated. 16 hours : The continuous length of the entire Live Aid concert. The show in London started at noon and ended at 11 p.m. In Philadelphia, things got under way at 8:51 a.m. and ended at 11:05 p.m. (4:05 a.m. in London), meaning that the entire thing ran for 16 hours. Though, as you can see, between London and Philly, there were actually more than 27 hours of total performances. 1 : The total number of artists who appeared at both the London and Philadelphia concerts. It was Phil Collins, who, after performing at Wembley, took a helicopter to Heathrow Airport, hopped on the Concorde and made it to JFK Stadium to do a second set — and play drums for Eric Clapton and the reunion of the former members of Led Zeppelin. He also reportedly convinced Cher — whom he met on the Concorde — to take the stage in Philly. What can we say? The man was dedicated. What are your memories of Live Aid? Let us know in the comments! Obama Administration Protected Black Panther Who Advocates Killing "Cracker" Babies

A former Justice Department lawyer hired during the Bush administration alleged on Tuesday that the department scaled down a voter-intimidation case against the New Black Panther Party last year because his former colleagues do not want to protect white people’s civil rights. The case arose after two members of the New Black Panther Party stood outside a polling place in a majority-black precinct in Philadelphia on Election Day in 2008. A video of the men, posted online, showed them dressed in paramilitary clothing, and one carried a billy club. In January 2009, less than two weeks before the Bush administration left office, the civil rights division invoked a rarely used section of the Voting Rights Act to file a civil lawsuit alleging voter intimidation by both men, the party chairman and the party. In April 2009, the division seemed to win the case by default because the New Black Panthers failed to show up in court. But the following month, a longtime Justice official, Loretta King — who was then the acting head of the division — decided to reduce the scope of the case. The department dropped the charges against the party, its chairman and the man who was not carrying a club. It pressed forward with the lawsuit against the man with the club, obtaining an injunction that forbids him from carrying a weapon near an open polling place in Philadelphia through 2012. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN67KJdd6Mw added by: ibrake4rappers13

Rush Limbaugh: Obama Created Recession As ‘Payback’ For Racism

Rush Limbaugh said on his July 2 radio show that he believes Obama tanked the economy on purpose, both as “payback” for 230 years of racial oppression and because Obama simply doesn't like America. He railed: “Who is Obama? Why is he doing this? Why? Why is he doing it? Is he stupid? Is it an accident? Is he doing it on purpose or what have you? … I think we face something we've never faced before in the country — and that is, we're now governed by people who do not like the country, who do not have the same reverence for it that we do. Our greatest threat (and this is saying something) is internal.” Limbaugh went on to compare Obama to the Black Panthers: “So in this interview with J. Christian Adams yesterday talking about [how] he and his line attorneys were told to just drop the case against the New Black Panthers for voter intimidation in Philadelphia, he said that there were people in the office, DOJ, who said, 'Well, you know, those people suffered the indignity of slavery, discrimination, segregation and so forth.' He said somebody else said, 'This is payback,' meaning, 'All right, look. We don't care if it's the New Black Panthers or whoever it is. Black people in this country have never, ever had a fair shake. This is payback. O.J. Simpson was payback. How does it feel?' That word 'payback' is not mine, [but] it is exactly how I think Obama looks at the country: It's payback time… There's no question that payback is what this administration is all about, presiding over the decline of the United States of America, and doing so happily.” added by: singrrr

Open Thread: Meet the Man DOJ Declined to Prosecute

Via Ed Morrissey , a chilling show of racism from the man charged with–and exonerated of–intimidating voters in Philadelphia in 2008. In related news, former DOJ officials are coming forward claiming that the Department’s decision to drop charges was racially or politically motivated. What are your thoughts?
