What Does Nolan’s Final Word On ‘TDKR’ Mean For Those Joseph Gordon-Levitt Batman Rumors?

Christopher Nolan may have left the door wide open for speculation at the end of The Dark Knight Rises where Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Gotham cop John Blake is concerned, and he is producer/co-writer on Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel , which the rumor mill suggests could see a Very Special Gordon-Levitt cameo . But in a chat with Film Comment about his entire Batman trilogy, Nolan was asked if he was completely done with his Dark Knight universe. So what are the implications for those JG-L rumors? (Spoilers, if you haven’t seen TDKR …) “For me, The Dark Knight Rises is specifically and definitely the end of the Batman story as I wanted to tell it,” Nolan said, “and the open-ended nature of the film is simply a very important thematic idea that we wanted to get into the movie, which is that Batman is a symbol. He can be anybody, and that was very important to us.” I know, I know. Nolan keeps using phrases like ” specifically and definitely the end ” but it’s just so hard to let go of the hope that he’s just messing with us. ” Nah, J/K you guys — Joe’s totes the new Batman! ” the geekosphere desperately waits for him to say. Well, good luck getting anything concrete out of Nolan. I believe him when he says his run with the Batman universe is over, although that doesn’t mean it’s not possible that Gordon-Levitt might pop up at the end of Man of Stee l in a bat-cowl to give Superman a Justice League fist bump. Warner Bros. may love Nolan for giving them a super respectable, arguably Oscar-worthy Batman series, but they’re not dumb. WB will squeeze every drop of Bat-juice out of the character, regardless of how Nolan retains the integrity of his fully explored, definitely closed chapter of Bat-lore. “Not every Batman fan will necessarily agree with that interpretation of the philosophy of the character,” Nolan said, “but for me it all comes back to the scene between Bruce Wayne and Alfred in the private jet in Batman Begins , where the only way that I could find to make a credible characterization of a guy transforming himself into Batman is if it was as a necessary symbol, and he saw himself as a catalyst for change and therefore it was a temporary process, maybe a five-year plan that would be enforced for symbolically encouraging the good of Gotham to take back their city.” “To me, for that mission to succeed, it has to end, so this is the ending for me,” he continued. “And as I say, the open-ended elements are all to do with the thematic idea that Batman was not important as a man, he’s more than that. He’s a symbol, and the symbol lives on.” Symbol, protege, replacement, reboot — what do you make of the Gordon-Levitt rumors in light of Nolan’s comments? Andy Samberg Leaving ‘Saturday Night Live’

‘It’s an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life,’ Samberg says of leaving after seven years of ‘SNL.’ By Josh Wigler Andy Samberg Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic It’s the end of an era for Andy Samberg, as the Lonely Island frontman has finally confirmed his exit from “Saturday Night Live.” Samberg spoke with The New York Times on Friday (June 1) and described the decision to depart “SNL” as “an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life.” He added, “Obviously it’s not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back.” No, it isn’t a huge shock — Samberg’s final Digital Short, a sequel to “Lazy Sunday,” strongly suggested his impending exit — but it’s nonetheless “one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made,” according to Samberg. In elaborating on his reasons for leaving the show after seven seasons, Samberg echoed the philosophy of fellow castmember Kristen Wiig, who also just concluded her “SNL” run . “She kept saying it just feels like it’s her time,” he said. “I connect with that. Something about it just feels like it’s the moment. My contract’s up, and I did so much more than I ever thought I would ever even do.” Samberg’s decision to walk away from the New York City-based variety show comes shortly after comments he made during his MTV Sneak Peek Week appearance for “That’s My Boy” this past Wednesday. At the time, Samberg told MTV News that his mind had not yet been made up regarding his future with the show. “You know, I’ve just been focusing on the movie and all this stuff,” the onetime MTV Movie Awards host said. “I haven’t talked to Lorne about it yet. Something will get decided over the summer. We’ll see. No matter what, it’s been a dream come true working there for me.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Far East Movement Drop ‘Unexpected’ Track With Tokio Hotel’s Bill Kaulitz

‘If I Die Tomorrow,’ off FM’s May 22 release, Dirty Bass, is ‘a song about losing yourself.’ By Jocelyn Vena Far East Movement Photo: MTV News Ever wondered what it would sound like if the Far East Movement enlisted Tokio Hotel ‘s glammy, gothy lead singer Bill Kaulitz for a track? Well, wonder no more, because now we have “If I Die Tomorrow.” The collaboration, which dropped Friday (May 18), leans more on FM’s love for partying than Kaulitz’s love for rocking. While FM rap all about bumping trunks, killing bottles and going crazy in the club, Kaulitz, in full auto-tuned, falsetto mode, proclaims, “If I die tomorrow, that means we had the night of our lives/ If tomorrow never comes, then tonight we lose control.” “If I Die Tomorrow” is off FM’s new album, Dirty Bass, out May 22. When MTV News caught up with Far East Movement recently, Kev Nish told us that fans will see plenty of “unexpected collaborations” like this on the upcoming album. “When we first signed to Cherrytree [Records], we went on the website and see who’s on the roster … and we saw Tokio Hotel, and we were like ‘Yo, this band is wild,’ ” Nish said of working with the Musical March Madness winner and Tokio Hotel’s leading man. “We were on a bus watching them on the MTV Europe Awards, winning, and we were like, ‘We need to do a song with those dudes.’ “So we got in with Bill Kaulitz and we just wanted to do a song about losing yourself, about possibly losing your mind, because you might die the next day,” he added. The album also features Justin Bieber on the song “Live My Life.” The same day the album drops, the group also kicks off their tour with the kings of party rocking, LMFAO . Facebook IPO Continues Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘Open’ Philosophy

Facebook CEO has created a ‘collaborative and connected culture,’ showcased in ‘The Diary of Facebook,’ airing Saturday at 9 a.m. on MTV. By John Mitchell Mark Zuckerberg Photo: Justin Sullivan/ Getty Images Wearing his signature hoodie and jeans, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the bell to open the Nasdaq Stock Market from the company’s Menlo Park, California, headquarters Friday morning (May 18) as his company went public with the biggest ever initial public offering by a tech company. Going for $38 per share, the offering raised $16 billion for the social networking website, which is inarguably one of, if not the most important and impactful tech company for the millennial generation. Zuckerberg has always been a natural at balancing the demands of running the world’s biggest social network, which boasts more than 900 million users around the world, while himself being an example of his generation’s focus on being open and forward-thinking without the pretense and show of past business leaders. The self-made billionaire is the ultimate everyman, albeit one with a genius intellect, and it’s a side of himself he showed off in earnest last year when MTV visited Facebook HQ for its special, “The Diary of Facebook.” “Facebook is a very open company. If you think about what we do, we’re trying to give all these people who use our products the ability to share things with their friends and their family,” Zuckerberg told MTV News. “The mission is to make the world more open and connected. So we believe that if that’s what we’re trying to do in the world then that’s how we should run the company too.” Zuckerberg went on to describe the philosophy with which he runs Facebook, now one of the most financially valuable in the world, and it stands in diametric opposition to how we view the modern corporate executive. There are no sequestered corner offices at Facebook HQ, no CEOs sporting expensive designer suits. “We have this really open floor plan. People are all sitting out near each other. It’s easy for everyone to turn to their neighbor and start talking,” the Facebook boss continued. “I have a desk out there just like everyone else. … That kind of collaborative and connected culture is what produces the best products for the people who are going to use them.” His philosophy on how to run a modern company may ultimately change the face of business moving forward. Friday’s massive IPO did many things, but one of the biggest, coming in the midst of an ongoing financial crisis created by men in suits, was to prove that the future doesn’t smoke cigars in executive lounges, it wears a hoodie and sits with the engineers who make it all happen. You can see it all for yourself as MTV re-airs “The Diary of Facebook” Saturday (May 19) at 9 a.m. the doc is also available online at MTV.com . Related Videos The Diary Of Facebook

T.I. Supports President Obama On Same-Sex Marriage Stance

‘I think that you should be able to do whatever you want to do,’ T.I. tells ‘RapFix Live’ about his stance on same-sex marriage. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway T.I. on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News President Obama is no stranger to hip-hop’s support. Not only have MCs dedicated songs to the 44th U.S. Prez, but guys like Jay-Z , Diddy and Ludacris have openly backed Barack. While many criticized Obama for his support of same-sex marriage , Hov backs him, and so does T.I. “Just to speak honestly and being frank, I don’t care,” the “Live Your Life” MC said about the non-stop debate on same-sex marriage when he appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” “I think that if a matter doesn’t affect your daily life, you shouldn’t take a hard stand on it. If it’s not something that directly affects you, if it doesn’t affect you, what difference does it make to you what other people are doing with their lives?” Tip, who is currently serving probation stemming from his 2007 weapons arrest, is unable to vote, but once his probation is lifted in September he revealed that he plans to vote for Obama, who will be looking to secure a second term as head of state. “I don’t think that’s a hard question,” he said. During an interview with CNN on Monday, Jay applauded the president for speaking out in support of the gay-rights movement. “I’ve always thought it as something that was still holding the country back,” Jay-Z said. “What people do in their own homes is their business, and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. It’s no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination, plain and simple.” “I think that you should be able to do whatever you want to do,” T.I. remarked. “I don’t see how it matters one way or another.” Related Videos T.I. Usher Unveils ‘Nostalgic’ New Song ‘Twisted’

Looking 4 Myself track featuring Pharrell is classic R&B but ‘very relevant,’ superstar says on ‘MTV First.’ By John Mitchell, with reporting by Sway Calloway Usher Photo: Jessica Hyndman / MTV News Usher sat down for an exclusive “MTV First” interview about his hotly anticipated upcoming release, Looking 4 Myself , his unconventional album-listening experience with the off-Broadway show “Fuerza Bruta” and to give fans a first listen to the Myself track “Twisted” featuring Pharrell. He told MTV News’ Sway Calloway the song is a “nostalgic record” that reflects the album’s ambitious aim to represent the variety of musical experiences that have impacted the R&B superstar. ” ‘Twisted’ is more of a nostalgic record, so when you think about the classic R&B record, we managed a way to modernize it, even though that’s very relevant,” the singer said. “You hear records like Cee Lo, you hear Bruno Mars and also Andre 3000, and that sound is very relevant in this time. So this was kind of our way to tie it all together and give you something different that you probably wouldn’t normally get from me.” Adapting current sounds and making them his own is a theme Usher is bringing in earnest to Looking 4 Myself and also reflects his philosophy of how to stay in the game. The star released his self-titled debut in 1994, when he was just 16, and has gone on to sell over 65 million records worldwide and score nine #1 songs and six more top 10 hits. As for how he’s managed to stay on top for so long, Usher revealed that it’s important to never be insular when it comes to music. “Life is a workout, man, it’s like a treadmill, and you gotta be with it, you gotta just stay with it,” he said. “For me, I’ve had the fortunate ability to always be mindful of other things and other people. I’m not so caught up in what I’m doing that I can’t be cognizant of what other people enjoy. … Now, I think music should be used as a channel to really allow people to have different experiences. So, this album is all about bottling up those different experiences.” The connecting tissue that’s given Usher the ability to explore world music — from full-on dance tracks like his new single “Scream” and his collaboration with David Guetta, “Without You,” to more classic R&B slow jams like “Climax” and the old-school spare drum beat of “Twisted” — while delivering cohesive records has been his voice, which he said brings “the essence of soul and emotion” to each record. “All of my career is kind of an unveiling, an unfolding story, and it ain’t done. There’s so much more that I’m going to do, so much that I’ve now just been interested in and been introduced to,” he continued. “I just want that experience of having this very monogamous relationship with entertainment and acting in a way where I can really, really focus and become better.” Usher’s commitment to tackling the changing face of music head-on and forging new roads in entertainment as he matures — he is currently training for a Sugar Ray Leonard biopic — is the key to his success, he said, concluding, “It’s all about evolution for me.” Share your review of “Twisted” in the comments below! Seal on Post-Divorce Media Tour: Peeps Need to Know!

Seal is speaking out … about speaking out about his divorce. The reason he’s been so forthcoming about his recent split with Heidi Klum , according to the singer, is to promote his upcoming tour because we deserve to know. He’s generous, that Seal. “When you publicize your marriage as much as ours was, when you renew wedding vows, all those things … you’re painting a picture of an ideal relationship that people aspire to,” he said on the Australian radio show Fifi and Jules. “So, when it goes south, you can’t all of a sudden take the philosophy of a monk and decide to go for a vow of silence,” the singer continued . “It doesn’t really work like that. I certainly respect my wife’s decision not to talk about that, but I felt that people at least deserved some kind of explanation why that picture of the ideal relationship wasn’t what they thought it was.” Seal really went above and beyond full disclosure, though. Taping Ellen, Piers Morgan Live and Tavis Smiley within a week of the breakup and not nixing any personal questions, he seemed to almost relish it. Okay, that’s a bit much, but while most stars clam up in these situations, he did the opposite . Then again, the shows were booked well in advance. “It’s not like this happened and I decided the next week to go on the [shows],” the 49-year-old Brit told Fifi and Jules. “It’s a difficult time.” “The best that one can do in this situation is handle it with dignity and civility… I tried my very best to protect the general welfare of my family.” “My wife included. You would hope you can behave like adults and try and protect those who are most important in this, which are your family.” In his defense, too, he wasn’t exactly talking smack. The reverse, if anything. Seal said some lovely things about Klum. “I still wear my wedding ring, because I’m still married to this incredible woman” and “she is still, in my opinion, the most wonderful woman in the world.” A reconciliation looks unlikely , however.

Rihanna’s Tattoos: From Stars To ‘Thug Life’

MTV News looks back at singer’s extensive history with body art. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna’s “Thug Life” tattoo Photo: Rihanna/Twitter Rihanna had everyone buzzing this week when she debuted a tattoo with the words “Thug Life” scrolled across her famous fingers. The flesh-colored ink was done up by Los Angeles tat artist Mark Mahoney at the Shamrock Social Club parlor in Hollywood. While the body art pays tribute to late rapper Tupac , it is certainly not the first time that Rihanna has gotten a tattoo. In fact, the singer is no novice. She’s already covered in ink, ranging from the sugary sweet to the more hard-core. She made headlines back in 2009 when she debuted a gun tattoo on her rib cage. Rihanna’s tattoo was scandalous as it came only months after her Grammy-night altercation with her ex, Chris Brown. “People are going to react all different ways,” tat artist BangBang explained to MTV News at the time, noting that it had been in the works long before the incident. “She’s great. She’s perfect. We had a blast, and we had a lot of fun.” BangBang and Rihanna have quite the history together when it comes to the many tats on her body. He is also responsible for the star tattoos on her back, the Roman numerals on her shoulder and the word “Shhh … ” on her finger. But Rihanna hasn’t stopped there. She has also been branded with a musical note on her ankle, a Pisces sign behind her right ear, the word “love” on her middle finger and a tribal tattoo on her hand. She reportedly has the birthday of her manager Melissa Forde written in Roman numerals on her shoulder: XI-IV-LXXXVI. As an homage to her perfume line she also has the French words for rebellious flower, “rebelle fleur,” on her neck. The singer also has a Sanatana Dharma Sanskrit prayer on her right hip. Reportedly misspelled, the phrase was supposed to mean “forgiveness, honesty, suppression and control,” but actually ends up meaning “long suffering, truthfulness, self-restraint, inward calm, fear and fearlessness.” On her rib cage, she also has the Arabic phrase “Al Hurria fi Al Maseeh,” which means “Freedom in God.” Proving to be some sort of billboard for sage advice, she also has the motto “Never a Failure, Always a Lesson” scrolled across her collarbone. Other Ri tats include a star in her ear and a skull and cross bone on her ankle. In fact, Rihanna loves tattoos so much that in July 2009, she was spotted giving BangBang a tattoo at New York’s East Side Ink, where he works. Owner Yadira said at the time, “We had a blast. It was so funny and cute.” When BangBang spoke to MTV News in 2009, he added this philosophy when it comes to tatting the singer: “You don’t want to be staring at tats. You want to be staring at her face.” Related Photos Hip-Hop Celebrity Tribute Tattoos Related Artists Rihanna
