Ricky Martin, Other Latin Celebs Agree: Arizona Sucks!

If you’re a legal immigrant in Arizona, walking down the street with your child, you may now get stopped by the police solely based on the color of your skin. While it seems incomprehensible that such a law could be passed in the United States, it’s a sad fact. It’s also one that Shakira spoke out against yesterday and then actually headed down to Phoenix to discuss in person with the mayor and other locals. Turns out, she isn’t the only celebrity (or American with a conscience) to object to this law. At last night’s Billboard Latin Music Awards, Ricky Martin said the ruling “makes no sense” and then went off on inequality in general: “You are not alone. We are with you. Put a stop to discrimination. Put a stop to hate. Put a stop to racism… Long live love, long live peace.” The singer himself came out of the (obvious) closet last month. A few others on hand also chimed in on the issue. Said Latin Artist of the Year winner, Larry Hernandez: “It’s regrettable that they are discriminating against for the simple fact of looking Latino. It’s not fair. We have to say no to that law.” Meanwhile, at a Phoenix press conference, Arizona native Linda Ronstadt stated: “Mexican-Americans are not going to take this lying down.” It’s a contentious issue, one many Americans don’t understand: this is racial profiling at its worst. Imagine if all African-Americans were detained and searched simply because there are more blacks in the system on drug charges than whites. It’s the same idea. Sound off with your thoughts now!

Arizona Immigration Law SB1070

Arizona Capitol police gather as protesters of immigration bill SB1070 sit on the Capitol lawn Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Capitol in Phoenix a day after Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill into law. The sweeping measure would make it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally, and would require local law enforcement to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are in the country illegally. Local law enforcement agencies have moved fr

50 Cent Announces The Invitation Tour Beginning May 28

Rapper kicks off 19-date tour in Cleveland. By Gil Kaufman 50 Cent Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images There’s been a bit of confusion about what 50 Cent’s next album, Black Magic, might sound like. After initially saying the record was inspired by dance beats he heard at a nightclub in Europe, the 50 explained that the disc will still be hip-hop, but with a twist. Fans might get a chance to hear what he’s talking about starting May 28, when 50 will launch The Invitation tour at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland. The month-long, 19-date outing will take him across the country to mid-size theaters before winding up with a June 25 show at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Though some people got it twisted when he initially said he was inspired by more uptempo dance music on the disc, which doesn’t have a release date yet, 50 quickly clarified what he meant. “I got a joint that I did that was real uptempo,” 50 told British DJ Tim Westwood back in March. “It’s a different type of vibe. It’s still 50 Cent. It’s official. If you heard the record, you’d feel different. My Black Magic album, I’ve been listening to different types of music. I just wanna create something that’s outta the box. I’m using different song formats. I’ll write a rap song in the sequence of a different kind of record. A traditional hip-hop record may have three 16-bar verses. To write it in a different formant instead of the way a traditional rap record is written, to experiment with different things, it’s still hip-hop music. It’s still 50 Cent content; it’s just written in a different way.” The dates for The Invitation tour are: 5/28 – Cleveland, OH @ Wolstein Center 5/29 – Detroit, MI @ Chene Park Riverfront Amphitheater 5/30 – Chicago, IL @ UIC Pavilion 6/1 – Denver, CO @ Fillmore Auditorium 6/3 – San Francisco, CA @ Warfield Theatre 6/4 – Los Angeles @ Club Nokia at L.A. Live 6/6 – Las Vegas, NV @ The Pearl Concert Theater at The Palms 6/7 – Phoenix, AZ @ Celebrity Theater 6/10 — Kansas City, KS @ Midland Theatre 6/11 – Dallas, TX @ Music Hall at Fair Park 6/12 – Houston, TX @ Arena Theater 6/15 – Miami, FL @ The Fillmore 6/17 – Atlanta, GA @ Tabernacle 6/18 – Myrtle Beach, SC @ House of Blues 6/19 – Raleigh, NC @ Walnut Creek Amphitheatre 6/22 -New York, NY @ Hammerstein Ballroom 6/23 – Wallingford, CT @ Chevrolet Theater 6/24 – Boston, MA @ House of Blues 6/25 – Atlantic City, NJ @ House of Blues Do you think 50 Cent should be experimenting with new sounds or stick to what he does best? Lollapalooza 2010 Lineup Includes Lady Gaga, Green Day, Soundgarden

The Strokes, Arcade Fire and Phoenix also headline the August fest in Chicago. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Marco Prosch/ Getty Images Lady Gaga is bringing the Monster Ball to Lollapalooza this August. Hope she’s packing some sunscreen. Early Tuesday morning (April 6), organizers of the granddaddy of U.S. summer fests revealed the lineup for the 2010 edition of Lolla, and Gaga’s name is atop the list, joined by fellow headliners Green Day, the recently reunited Soundgarden, the reformed Stokes, the Arcade Fire and Phoenix. Most of the headliners for the Chicago festival have some connection to Lollapalooza’s past. Lady Gaga was a relatively unknown side-stage performer in 2007; Green Day and the Arcade Fire have both taken the stage at the fest, and Soundgarden were twice a part of the original touring version of Lolla, having played the trek in both 1992 and 1996. Since splitting in 1997, they have not performed live together. The Lollapalooza gig will also be a return to the stage for the Strokes, who have not performed together in more than four years. Joining those headliners on the bill are MGMT, Hot Chip, the National, Erykah Badu, AFI, Grizzly Bear, Spoon, B.o.B., 2ManyDJs, the New Pornographers, the xx and Switchfoot. There are also legends like Jimmy Cliff and Devo, a jam-band or two (Blues Traveler) and even Chicago-area talent, most notably soul belter Mavis Staples. You can view the entire lineup — some 120 artists, with more to be announced in the coming weeks — over on the fest’s official site . Lollapalooza 2010 will be held August 6-8 in Chicago’s Grant Park. Passes are already on sale, though “early bird” packages are long gone. A standard three-day pass costs $215, with special VIP packages running $850. Does this lineup make you want to head to Chicago this summer? Who are you most excited to see? Times Publisher Parties in Phoenix While Paper Gets Pinched [Out Of Touch]

A provocative bar scene involving Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and his female companion helped whip gossip about the pair into a frenzy, according to a journalism-conference spy. As if the New York Times publisher needed to seem more provocative. A business journalism conference in Phoenix last week was rife with rumors about Sulzberger and Katherine Kristof , a CBS MoneyWatch columnist with whom Sulzberger was seen getting “friendly,” as we reported last week. We’d heard the pair were together for much of the weekend. Another conference participant says gossip about the two turned especially dirty after Sulzberger and Kristof were seen at the bar at Phoenix’s downtown Sheraton hotel, following a conference awards dinner at the Heard Museum Saturday night. Kristof, who shared a table with Sulzberger at the dinner, is said to have stayed conspicuously close to Sulzberger from the moment he arrived at the bar. That only made her and Sulzberger’s later disappearance from the establishment all the more noticeable. The rumor mill went into overdrive with chatter, circulating throughout the day Sunday, that the pair was, if not in a relationship, then at least having some casual fun. Even if the most salacious of the rumors are true — and media wags have been wrong about Sulzberger’s love live before — there’s no big scandal to hide here. Sulzberger announced a separation from his wife two years ago, and Kristof is apparently single. But it would be advisable these days for Sulzberger to tone down any public partying with his babe, or to at least remove it from rooms filled with the cream of the business press corps. His executive team just doled out $12 million or so in bonuses, hiking his own pay to $5.9 million (and either doubling it or raising it 32 percent , depending who you ask). Staffers are said to be up in arms over the payouts amid layoffs at the Times and pay cuts at the New York Times Company’s Boston Globe . There’s no need to bait the scolds with any evidence of indiscretion. On the other hand, some more public hookups just might shut up the juvenile sucker punchers who lay out the Weekend Journal . We’d enjoy that.
