Castaic, California: 4.2 and 3.0-magnitude earthquakes hit in 20-minute span, USGS says. The second and more powerful temblor happened at 7:18 p.m, and was initially reported at a magnitude of 4.5, according to the USGS. Its epicenter, in northwest Los Angeles County, was located 13 miles north-northwest of Santa Clarita and 19 miles northeast of Fillmore. The quake had a depth of 5 miles. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Residents reported feeling the earthquake in Vale

Brittney Griner, a star for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA, was chased around by a knife-wielding maniac and stabbed last night in China when she tried to board her team bus. Griner is playing for the Beijing Great Wall of the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association during the WNBA offseason and was departing a practice facility with two teammates when the culprit confronted the group with his weapon. The former Baylor standout was slashed on the elbow, but made it on to the bus relatively unscathed. The assailant left the scene before later returning for some reason, covered in blood. He was then apprehended by local police and taken into custody. It remains unclear what provoked the incident, though Griner is a lesbian who is engaged to fellow WNBA star Glory Johnson . Any hate crime motivation on the part of the attacker is pure speculation on our part, however. “First let me say I’m ok!!!! But last night me and 3 my teammates got chase and attack by a man with a big ass knife got a little scratch and my teammates walk away unharmed!” Griner wrote on Instagram, adding: “He chase us into our bus and had us corned yelling at us then he finally left! Arizona National Guard Chopper Crew Suspended For Candy Drop At Residential Party Via NYDailyNews A National Guard chopper crew scared Arizona residents by making a midair candy drop to a private Halloween party in their Black Hawk have been suspended. Locals living near 36th St. and Camelback Road in Phoenix were left more terrified than usual late Oct. 31 when the military whirlybird swooped close to their homes, reports FOX 10. Many believed that their streets were under some kind of attack. “I didn’t know if it was going to be a crash, or an attack, no clue,” one neighbor told the news station. “When I came out it was nose down, and it was definitely military,” added another. But after cellphone footage of the incident was posted online, it emerged that the crew was in fact making an unauthorized sweet treat drop to partygoers below. The elite crew had reportedly taken off from the Papago Park Military Reservation and was embarking on a training mission in the suburb of Deer Valley But they decided to make the spooky impromptu stop midway. The Arizona National Guard launched an investigation after seeing the video, which was posted online. “The incident was not sanctioned by the Arizona National Guard and will be investigated further to ensure it does not occur again,” an official statement said. “The Arizona National Guard does not authorize nor condone the use of military aircraft or equipment for personal use,” it added. It’s the time of year when folks like to scare one another for fun, but for millions of Harry Potter obsessives, nothing is more frightening than the prospect of waiting two years for the start of J.K. Rowling’s forthcoming spin-off series. But while the first film in the Rowling-penned Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise won’t hit theaters until 2016, the beloved author is giving fans an unexpected treat this Halloween in the form of a short story based at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Back in July, Rowling brought Potter back in a fairly depressing short story that featured the Boy Who Lived as a balding, downtrodden man approaching middle-age. Her forthcoming tale reportedly won’t feature Harry himself, but will instead center upon a minor villain who’s name likely sends a shiver down the spines of millions of Potter-philes: Dolores Umbridge was first introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as the latest in the long line of ill-fated Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers. While she’s not quite as vicious as He Who Must Not Be Named, Umbridge’s fondness for grotesque punishments (coupled with her toad-like appearance and love of the color pink) made her one of the most reviled characters in the Potter canon. Earlier this month, there were rumors that Rowling hinted at a new Harry Potter book on Twitter. That turned out not to be the case the case, so while the Umbridge story is certainly short (only about 2,000 words) it looks like for the time being, that’s the only way we’ll be able to return to Hogwarts. Unless, of course, someone locates platform 9 3/4. When Christa Hendershot got engaged last fall, the typical photo filters were not cutting it when it came time to show off the bling her fiance picked out. Those hands … she did not want to post a ring selfie with those hands. So the 33-year-old from Mount Sinai, N.Y., did what any of us would do and turned to plastic surgery, looking to smooth out her hands and make them “selfie worthy.” She recently shelled out more than $3,000 for “hand rejuvenation.” Hendershot felt her hands were “veiny” and her knuckles “very red,” but after the procedure, she felt happier about the appearance of her digits. The explosion of social media and quest for the perfect selfie have gotten so extreme that filters and photo editing tricks just aren’t getting it done for some. After seeing how she looked in wedding photos, Jen Muir, 33, said she realized she hated the way her nose looked and shies away from selfies. So Muir decided to have a nose job, spending $15,000 for selfies. “I want to change my profile. I feel like my nose hangs,” she said. “I also want to change my bump. I feel like it’s too big.” Her plastic surgeon, Dr. Samuel Rizk of New York City, credited social media for an uptick in business, the biggest trend he has seen in his 16 year career. “I personally would see 2-3 patients a day that have come in from selfies and social media,” he said, adding that Muir was so happy, she started crying. As we reported yesterday – and he confirmed with the Instagram photo he shared before taking down – Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are back together . They were caught kissing at a Bible study group and went to church together Wednesday night, with a close source saying they’re “trying to be better people.” Justin posted a Bible verse on Instagram the next day saying, “After you have suffered a little while, God will restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you.” They were also spotted at the movies earlier this week, which is presumably when he posted (and quickly deleted) the telling photo of Selena kissing his cheek. To think we actually scoffed at the notion that Bieber was sure his girl would come running back to him after their latest split. We should know better. Something about these two is both electric and toxic at the same time. As bad as things seem to go when they’re together, they simply can’t stay apart. Just when you think their combustible, emotionally personalities make a lasting romance impossible, she ends up in his bed once again. It’s uncanny. Still, it obviously won’t last.
