Has Technology Made Us More Awkward?

See original here:

Yesterday, as I was walking back from the train station after a long day at work, I ran into someone I knew on the way home. After we exchanged greetings and we proceeded to chat, it quickly became hard to hold a conversation as we both seemed lost in our own worlds. We had both not been expecting this chance meeting and were tired from work, but I later realized that there was more to that encounter than just lethargy from the end of the day. I had spent most of the train ride on my phone surfing the internet and reading a book, which are both very solitary activities. The bulk of my job requires me to be on my laptop, so obviously I have become very accustomed over the years to communicating online. I even find myself making lunch plans through e-mail, even though the person I’m messaging is in the same side of the building. Ordinary face-to-face contact has become an alternate reality to sites such as Facebook and Twitter, where you can post your day-to-day thoughts and send messages instantly from person to person. You don’t even have to open your mouth or leave your chair anymore to be able to ask people questions or find out about their daily life. The addition of the internet onto cell phones has also become a gateway to instant gratification and can sometimes even spawn new friendships if you are too shy to speak to someone on a more personal level. However, if you really think about it, what is technology doing to the fundamental social skills that people have to learn and cultivate? If you can’t talk to someone in person and you resort to e-mailing or Facebook-ing them, is that really the start to a healthy relationship? While there are definitely some advantages to the technology that have made communication easier in the long run, there are still some drawbacks in the way people relate to each other with this changing technology. Is Social Networking Bad For Your Child? Thinking back to even ten years ago, cell phones were less advanced and social networks were not the ultimate gathering place. E-mail was still important and frequently used, but you couldn’t access it as easily as you can with today’s rash of Smart-phones. The latter has actually become something of interest to me as of late, as I just recently invested in an iPhone. Being able to access your Facebook account or e-mail on the run can be a blessing and a curse, as having so much connectivity can be helpful, as well as distracting. While it might be great to be able to look up street directions or a song that you heard on the radio, sometimes the urge to check one’s phone for new messages can end up replacing human-to-human interaction. Despite the new distractions, I was recently discussing the merits of cell phones and computers with a friend at lunch today and we were both in awe of how we survived without them for so long. Mailing letters and stopping by at people’s houses unannounced seems foreign to us in this day and age, since the fast-paced world has made people accessible at an instant. Ways of communicating are constantly changing, yet this new evolution has left the younger generation less likely to engage in true face-to-face conversation. According to the New York Times , college students have even started using text messages as a way of resolving roommate conflicts, despite the fact that they could be discussing it right in their own room! Have text messages become the new voice, making us strangers of interpersonal connection? It’s important to take yourself away from your technology once in a while, putting away your phone and simply sitting down for coffee with a friend without distractions. Basic communication skills like eye contact and a listening ear are vital in forming bonds with other people and something we should continue to cultivate, despite the changing times with new media replacing what was once commonplace interaction. When you “unplug” yourself from the web of technology, even if for a short amount of time, there is much to be learned from simply talking to others and keeping the human aspect of communication alive. Never forget the foundation of human interaction, which involves the bare bones of creating a relationship with the other person. It is very hard to find connections through simple text, as the words have to have some emotion that only the human voice, facial expressions, and general presence can provide. By breaking the barriers that technology has built around us, using our face-to-face times as serious communication can help bring us out of our awkward funk and back into a world where machines don’t dominate our social lives! Why Small Moments In Your Life Can Mean The Most

See the article here:

When I’m thinking about what to write, I often find myself thinking of the small moments in life that tend to make me smile and reflect on the most. I tend to get my best musings when I least expect it, such as during my daily coffee run or while maneuvering down a busy walkway on my way to work. To put the reader in my shoes, you might be waiting in line at your local coffee shop and suddenly feel the hustle and bustle of the morning seemingly slow down as the cashier makes a mistake with the register. That moment of the day might make you stop for a second and begin to realize that the urgency of your surroundings could be internalized stress rather than the actual reality. On a completely different topic, perhaps you’re checking your phone and find yourself smiling from ear to ear due to an unexpected text message. While you feel your day brighten, the other person might not even realize that what they said left you beaming. It’s usually these situations that tend to have the most impact on every day life, despite the fact that they might be quite small in the scheme of events. It truly is the meaning you add to these events that gives them their authenticity and reverence. 5 Ways To Find Inspiration From Within Observing the people around you and enjoying life moment by moment is definitely the better way to be, as you gain perspective from positioning yourself as a moment-maker in the scheme of a big world. Time isn’t infinite and shouldn’t be wasted by letting larger events obscure your view of the smaller, more intimate moments in life. Even just initiating lunch with someone new at work or calling up an old friend can be small gestures that add happiness and fulfillment to your life. If you think of each moment as a movie trailer, the big picture is the product you are generating through the choices you make. By making sure each snippet of your life counts, you have to be present and willing to put yourself out there. This means being aware of the good points of every day and keeping your glass half full, even when you feel like it is empty! Don’t let opportunities pass you by, as taking risks, within reason, is an important part of living your life to its fullest potential. Take pride in each moment, as every second has the ability to change your life! Optimism is a bit part of this, so keep your head facing the future and your eyes open to the details! The day started off great! When I arrived at the arena, I saw DJ…

The day started off great! When I arrived at the arena, I saw DJ Tay James. We didn’t bother him because he was with a group of people he knew talking, so we walked over to the buses. Later we saw Nick Demoura riding up on a bike and we stopped him and asked him to sign our book. Tay was walking over and we got pictures and he signed the book as well this time. He filmed us for WeKnowTheDJ.com!! We also met Kannec, and Robert Caplin who also signed our First Step 2 Forever books. Then my mom got a DM from Dave Reynolds saying, “text me your full name and number,” with his phone number in it. My mom did and when we saw him walking around, we went up to him and gave him his sweatshirt she made him. When we went in the line for the meet and greet, I saw Dan Kanter. I ran over to him and was like, “Dan! You’re on my necklace!!” He said, “Cool! I’ve seen your tweets about that! That’s so cool! “  I walked into the little tent where the m&g was, and looked at Justin. I handed Kenny the 4 letters I had with me and walked over to Justin. He said hi then I said, “Hi. Can I have a hug?” and this is what he said, “I’m actually really sick and I don’t want to get you sick. I’m really Sorry.” I told him it was okay and that he looked amazing. I remember he was wearing the same pants as Dan. Kenny and my mom talked for a little. The whole time they were talking, I just felt Justin’s arm around my waist. Finally we got the picture. On our way out I saw Dan & Tay again and got another picture. When I asked Tay for another picture he was like, “We already got one earlier!!” and I was like, “Not in my phone!” and he was like, “Ohh! I got ya!” We got to our seats and saw Kanec walking around, we called him over and I got up and hugged him. He was like, “So you met him?” I was like “Yes!!”. He saw we had Estovar stuff so he went and got Michael Vargas for us! They came back out and sat there and talked to us for at least 30 minutes. Then Michael saw we had more stuff, he asked who it was for, we told him Legaci. He went back and brought Micah out for us. Micah talked to us for a little but he wasn’t feeling well. So he took all the stuff back, and said he would send the guys out. Well about 5 minutes later, all of Legaci walked out wearing the sweatshirts. They came over to our seats and talked with us and we all hugged. Then my mom asked them if they would sing Happy Birthday to Ali since this was her present. They did! They signed stuff and told us to meet them by the buses after the concert. During ‘Down To Earth’, Alfredo was looking up and down the rows in our section and my mom stopped him and asked if he liked the hoodie she made him (Kanec took it to him for us) He looked at her and was like, “I WAS LOOKING FOR YOU! Thank you sooo much!”  After the concert we walked back to the buses. Micah was out signing stuff. Then Alfredo was walking over, we called him over by FERNANDO!! He hugged me, then signed my hat. Chris and Micah tweeted us that night, Kanec DMed me and the next day, Dom and Del tweeted my mom, and Dom and Dan Kanter tweeted me! -JoHanna/ @JoHannaBeliebes Read the original here: The day started off great! Prodigy Says Mobb Deep’s Rick Ross Collabo Is Already Done

‘It’s in the stash right now,’ P tells MTV News at Summer Jam. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Prodigy Photo: MTV News Mobb Deep’s Prodigy may only be three months out of jail, but the Queens MC is wasting no time in the studio. After already releasing a free online mixtape ( The Bump Elsworth EP ), P and his partner Havoc are hard at work on Mobb Deep’s eighth studio album. While few details about the LP are confirmed, the H.N.I.C. tells MTV News that they can most likely expect a Rick Ross collaboration, which is already recorded. “We did a joint with Ross. It’s in the stash right now. It’ll probably be for the Mobb album. It’s kinda crazy too,” Prodigy said backstage at Hot 97’s Summer Jam concert on Sunday. Ross talked about the collaboration and how it came about during his “RapFix Live” visit May 25. Despite Prodigy’s affiliation to Ross’ nemesis 50 Cent, who previously signed Mobb Deep to a G-Unit deal, the two artists were able to work out any perceived differences. “I respect him, most definitely, as being a boss, making your own decisions,” Ross told Sway. “When he was released, he gave me a call a few days after that. We spoke on the phone maybe once or twice. It was a genuine conversation, us touching base, making sure it is what it is. We most definitely put a record or two on the table. Just to be frank, I was always a fan of the homey, H.N.I.C. I always respected when I saw that. The B.G. collaboration he did with the South, that was big for me. So I was always a fan of the homey and when he made this move in a way, so you had to respect it. So look for a Rozay and Prodigy record in the future.” It still may be awhile before fans hear the record, however. “We’re looking forward to maybe, like, September. End of August, September — we’re shooting for around that time,” Prodigy said of Mobb Deep’s upcoming release date. “We know they need that new music out there, something for the streets. We gotta feed the streets. It’s a lot of different things happening in hip-hop. That’s a good thing. You got different types of sounds, but you know we gotta keep what makes us going. We gotta keep our sound alive, that dark hip-hop. We’re gonna keep that alive.” What are you expecting from a Mobb/Ross collabo? Let us know in the comments!
