Justin Bieber Graduates From High School

‘I just finished high school,’ says Bieber. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News When most kids are getting ready to graduate from high school, the biggest worry on their mind is what college they’re going to go to or finding a job. Justin Bieber , of course, is not the average high schooler. And yet, in between releasing multi-platinum albums, touring the globe, renting out the Staples Center for dates with his sweetie
and hanging out in the studio with Kanye West
, Bieber has also managed to stay on top of his studies. “I just finished high school,” Bieber recently told England’s Daily Telegraph . “I passed my test – I’m free! It was hard doing school and work every day.” Amid all the globe-trotting and studio sessions, Bieber kept his eye on the prize because, well, he’s a good boy and he’d promised his mother that he would. “That was something my mom really wanted me to do, so I had to do it for her,” said Bieber, 18. “I mean, this kind of lifestyle has given me a different perspective on life. I’ve been able to travel the world. At school, usually you have to do a lot of writing and reading. I’m really not into that stuff. I like to be out there.” Bieber can clearly buy himself anything he wants as a graduation gift — he already has a batmobile — but his fans have already given him the biggest prize of all: another huge hit. When the video
for his new single, “Boyfriend,” debuted last week it sent a single-day record
on YouTube when it racked up 8 million views within 24 hours. As of press time the clip had been seen more than 19.5 million times. Related Videos Frame By Frame: Justin Bieber’s ‘Boyfriend’ MTV First: Justin Bieber Related Photos The Evolution Of: Justin Bieber Related Artists Justin Bieber

Skylar Laine Was James Durbin’s ‘Pick’ To Win ‘American Idol’

Season 10 contestant was ‘disappointed’ the country cutie got the boot. By James Montgomery James Durbin Photo: MTV News One year ago, James Durbin was sailing along on “American Idol,” riding a string of powerhouse performances to a (presumed) spot in the finals — until he was sent packing in a shocking elimination . And yes, he remembers it well. In fact, it’s why he’ll be tuning into the show this week. “Oh, I’ll definitely watch this week, because this was the week [last year] when I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m so pumped, I kicked ass, it couldn’t have gone better!’ And then I go into work the next day, and no one’s making eye contact with me,” he laughed. “So that was like, ‘Oh, son of a bitch.’ I knew the moment I got to work that day [that I was going to be eliminated]. But it is what it is. I was happy to make it that far. … It’s a whirlwind that they put you through, especially when you’re as unstable as I was.” And while he’s more than moved on — his debut album, Memories of a Beautiful Disaster, was released in November, and he’s currently touring with hard-rock brethren Buckcherry — he still watches “Idol” on occasion. He can’t help but think that history repeated itself this past week when another “Idol” fan favorite, Skylar Laine , was voted off the show. “I’m disappointed. She was my pick to win,” he said. “She actually has stage presence. She puts on a show. That’s what I try to do as much as possible, that’s what I evoke, and that’s what inspires me. And that was cool to see for her genre. She loves Miranda [Lambert], and she loves Reba [McEntire] and she loves Jason Aldean, and that’s perfect for her, that’s her audience that she’s aiming at, and that’s the kind of music I could see her making.” Durbin also had kind words for “Idol” castoff Colton Dixon — which is interesting, considering he made headlines earlier this season for criticizing the tight-trousered rocker for a perceived lack of authenticity — and for biting his performance from the previous season. But all that is water under the bridge these days, because Durbin has buried the hatchet (or, more appropriately, the broadsword, which he inexplicably clutched for the entirety of his interview with MTV News) and is only focused on one thing: spreading the gospel of rock. “The only reason I said that was because it seemed like he had shied away from what he was,” Durbin explained. “I got to talk to him when I was there [last month], and he’s a great kid, he’s a great singer, and I’m excited to hear what he puts out. It’s exciting for any sort of genre of music just to see something new, and he definitely has his base. He knows where he’s at, so I just like to see artists like himself who know who they are be who they are. ” ‘Idol’ is an interesting thing to be on, because people are pulling you in every which direction, and you just have to be comfortable in your own skin, knowing who you are and knowing what makes you tick and knowing what you want to convey and how you want to be perceived,” he continued. “I mean, it basically boils down to you. If you want be looked at as a Rock God, then you have to act like a Rock God. … You gotta be it, live it, breathe it, eat it, sleep it, poop it.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Chris And Liam Hemsworth: 2012 Box-Office Kings

With the success of ‘Avengers’ and ‘Hunger Games,’ the Australian brothers claim the year’s top two opening weekends. By Amy Wilkinson Liam and Chris Hemsworth Photo: Getty Images The box-office odds are ever in the favor of Chris and Liam Hemsworth. With Marvel’s “The Avengers” claiming a record-breaking $200 million in its first three days and “The Hunger Games” bowing at just over $150 million, the Australian brothers have assembled the top two opening weekends of 2012. Talk about the thunder from Down Under! Six weeks after its debut, “The Hunger Games” continues to perform well, raking in a total gross of more than $380 million. And though it will undoubtedly fall in its second weekend, the box-office experts who spoke to MTV News were bullish about the continued heroics of “The Avengers.” “I project it will become the fastest film in history to smash the $1 billion global box-office mark, doing it in about 20 days or so,” Box Office Guru editor Gitesh Pandya said. ” ‘Avengers’ just might end up becoming the highest-grossing non-James Cameron film ever.” Interestingly enough, 2012 marks the first time in which the Hemsworth brothers have had competing films at the cineplex. Chris broke onto the scene with a small part as Captain Kirk’s father in 2009’s “Star Trek,” though his most high-profile role to date is arguably as the titular, hammer-heavy Norse god of 2011’s “Thor.” Brother Liam’s entry into American cinema came courtesy of Nicholas Sparks’ 2010 romance “The Last Song,” in which he played the beau of real-life girlfriend Miley Cyrus. And there will be plenty more Hemsworth to come in 2012. Next month, Chris will continue his weapon-wielding ways in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” co-starring Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart. In November, he’ll star alongside his brother’s “Hunger Games” cohort Josh Hutcherson in the action flick “Red Dawn.” Liam also has a pair of films readied for this year: “AWOL,” a war-time drama co-starring Teresa Palmer, and “The Expendables 2,” in which he’ll go toe-to-toe with action vets Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Chuck Norris (just to name a few). From all appearances, it’s the Hemsworths’ year , and we’re just living in it. For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock Pays Tribute To Adam Yauch

‘Saturday Night Live,’ Dalai Lama, Thom Yorke and fun. also honor Beasties rapper MCA. By Gil Kaufman Michael ‘Mike D’ Diamond, Adam ‘Ad-Rock’ Horovitz and Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch of The Beastie Boys Photo: WireImage Two days after losing his life-long friend and band mate of 30 years, Adam “MCA” Yauch
, Beastie Boys rapper Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz posted a heartfelt note on the band’s Tumblr page about his late comrade. “As you can imagine, s— is just fkd up right now,” he wrote in the blog, which was accompanied by a picture of a hand with the message, “PWR 2 MCA” in front of a bank of CDs. “But I wanna say thank you to all our
friends and family (which are kinda one in the same) for all the love and support.
I’m glad to know that all the love that Yauch has put out into the world is coming right back at him.” Yauch, who died at age 47 on Friday after a three-year battle with cancer, was shouted out by many of his friends, admirers and acts he’d influenced over the weekend. Fun. threw in a verse of “Sabotage” as part of their encore at Washington D.C.’s 9:30 Club on Friday night and “Saturday Night Live” played a clip of the group’s 1994 performance of “Sure Shot” on the show featuring Rihanna
as a musical guest. HBO dedicated the broadcast of last month’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony into its broadcast of the proceedings, where the B-Boys were inducted as only the third rap group to enter the the Hall. Among the luminaries weighing in was exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama, who released a statement in which he said, “Adam had helped us raise awareness on the plight of the Tibetan people by organizing various freedom Tibet concerts and he will be remembered by his holiness and the Tibetan people.” Yauch, a Buddhist who was behind the landmark all-star Tibetan Freedom concerts
of the late 1990s, was blessed by the Dalai Lama last year. MTV News also took to the airwaves to express our appreciation for the influential artist with the one-hour special “Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy,”
during which we reflected on the legendary MC’s career and the indelible mark he made on music as a whole, as well as on society. Kim Gordon, former bassist for Sonic Youth, who were big supporters of the Tibetan Freedom shows, issued a statement to England’s New Musical Express , in which she praised Yauch’s lyrical abilities, “He told me once that he really liked the lyrics to [Sonic Youth’s] ‘Bull In The Heather’. It surprised me that he had even listened to it. It meant a lot to me that he went out of his way to tell me that, coming from such a great rapper and lyricist.” Another Tibetan Freedom supporter and performer, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke , posted a remembrance on the band’s website, in which he wrote, “I was very sad to hear the news of Adam Yauch’s death yesterday.
We looked up to the Beastie Boys a lot when we were starting out and how they maintained artistic control making wicked records but still were on a major label, and the Tibetan Freedom Concerts they organized had a very big influence on me personally and the way Adam conducted himself and dealt with it all impressed me a lot. He was a mellow and v smart guy. May he rest in peace.” The tributes followed earlier ones from the likes of Madonna
, the B-Boys’ longtime DJ, Mix Master Mike and Justin Timberlake
as well as in-concert shout-outs from Coldplay and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Share your memories of Adam on Twitter using the hashtag #RIPMCA. Related Videos Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch: 1964-2012 Related Photos The Beastie Boys’ Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch: A Life In Photos Related Artists Beastie Boys

Beastie Boy Adam Yauch Wore Many Hats

In addition to his role as a rapper, Yauch was also involved in film and human rights efforts. By Gil Kaufman Adam Yauch Photo: Getty Images Like an intertwined set of fat laces on an old-school Adidas shell toe shoe, the verbal flow of the Beastie Boys was always seamless. MCA, AD-Rock and Mike D dipped in and out of each others lines and traded off verses like a three-headed hip-hop hydra, their flows unique, but always tightly packed. With the death of Adam Yauch (aka MCA)
on Friday (may 4) at the age of 47, that flow is forever interrupted, but the New York-born rapper’s legacy lives on not just in his rhymes but in his many efforts outside the scope of his MC role. While the B-Boys always presented a united front in the studio and on stage, MCA was a renaissance man whose many interests ranged from direction videos and movies to his decades-long efforts to aid the cause of Tibetan freedom. Along with lending his indelible, rough-hewn voice
voice to the trio’s eight studio albums, Yauch was a cinephile who used the group’s bully pulpit explore his second passion: directing. Under the pseudonym Nathaniel Hornblower (aka Yauch’s mustachioed Swiss “uncle”), Yauch directed a number of the band’s most innovative and eye-popping videos , including the robot attack clip for “Intergalactic,” the Italian spy spoofing “Body Moving,” as well as the 2006 Beasties documentary, “Awesome: I F–kin’ Shot That!” He also directed and produced the 2008 street basketball documentary “Gunnin’ For that #1 Spot,” which the first title released by his film company, Oscilloscope Laboratories. Since then, Oscilloscope has become the home of a steady flow of interesting and offbeat documentaries and features, including “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” “Flow,” “Bellflower,” “Wendy & Lucy,” the environmental docu-comedy “No Impact Man,” the Banksy movie “Exit Through the Gift Shop” and 2009 Sundance darling, “The Messenger.” As Hornblower, he was behind the camera for the 20-minute star-studded remake of the band’s 1996 frat boy anthem “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party),”
 in which “Eastbound and Down”
star Danny McBride stepped into MCA’s iconic leather jacket. Oscilloscope is also releasing one of the most anticipated head-trip movies in decades this summer, “Samsara,” an HD visual spectacle that is a sequel of sorts to the 1992 70-MM non-narrative classic “Baraka,” as well as a documentary about LCD Soundsystem’s final show, “Shut Up and Play the Hits.” Yauch, a Buddhist, was also passionate about the cause of Tibetan freedom. He was one of the co-founders in 1994 of the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit organization that raised money for and promoted the cause of the Tibetan people’s desire to break free from the People’s Republic of China. After donating money to the cause through royalties from a pair of songs from the Check Your Head album that sampled the chanting of Tibetan Monks, Yauch oversaw the launch of the annual Tibetan Freedom Concerts. The first one, in 1996, took place in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and raised nearly $1 million for Tibetan exile groups thank to sets by the Smashing Pumpkins, A Tribe Called Quest, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, De La Soul and Rage Against the Machine. Subsequent shows took place in 1997 in New York (U2, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Michael Stipe and Mike Mills of R.E.M.), Washington, D.C. in 1998 (Dave Matthews Band, Wyclef Jean, Pearl Jam, KRS-One), Amsterdam, Wisconsin, Sydney and Tokyo in 1999 (Run-DMC, the Roots, Garbage, Alanis Morissette) Tokyo (2001) and Taipei (2003). Share your condolences for MCA’s family, friends and fans in the comments below.
