‘Fifty Shades of Grey’: Experts Cast Christian Grey

Robert Pattinson, Ian Somerhalder, Ryan Gosling are fan favorites to play the dark and mysterious character in E L James’ novel. By Christina Garibaldi Robert Pattinson Photo: MTV News People just can’t stop talking about “Fifty Shades of Grey.” E L James has set the literary world on fire with as erotic novel that explores the relationship between a dark and mysterious guy named Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, an innocent college graduate. The guilty-pleasure book features characters that James created in her “Twilight” fan fiction, and it’s now being made into a feature film . That, of course, has had Hollywood buzzing with casting rumors about who could play the role of Christian Grey. Fans of the trilogy already have strong opinions about the part, so MTV News caught up with some experts for their take. “Christian definitely needs to be clean-cut, but extremely sexy when disheveled,” Alison Genet of Twifans.com told MTV News. “I wouldn’t choose a man that is overly chiseled. No juicehead gorillas need apply. Hair that can be neatly brushed, but when playing, it’s loose and wild like Johnny Depp hair. Not super short.” Of course, the physical look of the actor has to fit, but Christian is also a complex individual, and most fans want an actor who can pull off all his many dimensions. “I just think that the actor needs to be able to portray being so intense,” Mags Vazquez from , “But also showing that vulnerability that he has in reality.” Casting rumors for the part of Christian have been heating up as of late, with names like “Twilight’s” own Robert Pattinson coming up. So, do fans want to see Pattinson make the transition from Edward Cullen to Christian Grey? “There’s the side that first fell in love with the characters as part of ‘Twilight’ fan fiction and can only see Robert Pattinson as Christian and/or Kristen Stewart as Ana,” Lisa Parker from FiftyShadesFilm.com explained. “Would we be disappointed if he/she/they were cast? Absolutely not.” Others disagree, however. “In regards to Robert Pattinson, I would like to see them move away from ‘Twilight’ so it can get its own identity,” Crissy Maier of Laters, Baby! said. Well, if Pattinson doesn’t land the role, there’s a chance another vampire could step in: “Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder. “I think Ian seems like a good fit visually, I haven’t watched ‘Vampire Diaries,’ but what I hear about his acting skills there, I’m hearing good things,” Maier said. Parker agreed, revealing that her readers have been backing Somerhalder since he expressed interest in the role during an interview with Ryan Seacrest. “We’re excited to see actors step up and say they would be interested in playing the leading man,” Parker said, adding, “With Ian Somerhalder being the first and a popular candidate judging from our Twitter timeline.” These super fans have suggestions of their own though, ranging from Matt Bomer to “Man of Steel” star Henry Cavill . Not surprisingly, Ryan Gosling is also a favorite. “We are fans of the love story too, so we know exactly what qualities ‘FSOG’ fans see in different actors and actresses that make them appealing for the roles,” Parker said. “Have you seen the Dunhill London ads featuring Henry Cavill? Do they not scream ‘Fifty’? Have you seen Ryan Gosling’s GQ photo shoot? Grey silk tie anyone?” Genet of Twifanscom agreed, saying Gosling’s undeniable charm could make him the perfect Christian Grey: “Ryan Gosling, Ryan Gosling, and Ryan Gosling. Imaging him in jeans hung low on the hip.” “The one thing we know for sure is that with E L James as a collaborative partner in the casting process, we are confident that she will do what’s in the best interest of her famously loved characters.” Parker said. Who do you think should play Christian Grey in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie? Let us know in the comments! Run-DMC Remember Adam Yauch, In Their Own Words

‘Just like everybody else that ended up falling in love with them, that’s what happened to me,’ Rev Run tells MTV News of the Beastie Boys. By Nadeska Alexis Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys in 1987 Photo: Ebet Roberts/ Getty Images In 1986, the Beastie Boys set out on the Raising Hell Tour with LL Cool J, Whodini and Run-DMC, and the chemistry between the groups was instantaneous. Adam Yauch, one-third of the Beasties, died Friday (May 4) after a three-year battle with cancer , and both Rev Run and DMC reached out to MTV News to share their personal memories of Yauch and the Beastie Boys from the days they spent together, early in their respective careers. Rev Run Developing a Bond : “When I first met [the Beastie Boys], they came to the [Def Jam] office and they were really good rappers, but more than that, they were funny. They were not only friendly, but they were just so funny, it was amazing. Their rhymes were funny and they were funny, so out of everything I can think of, everything with them was fun and humorous, and that was what attracted me to them. One time, on tour, I actually abandoned my bus because I was so intrigued and was so friendly with them that I went and hung on their bus for a night, so that was really cool. I’d never tried anything like that before, so it was kinda crazy, but I wanted to be with them, so I was like, ‘Y’all got an extra bunk?’ I left my bus and I went and hung on their bus. It was the funnest thing in the word, if ‘funnest’ is a word.” Their Effect on Hip-Hop : “I think they were blowing people’s minds. I was out on tour right before I met them, and when they came along, it was just amazing. I ended up actually writing songs with them, like ‘Paul Revere.’ And then they took one of our songs ‘Slow and Low’ — we left a tape in the studio and they did it over — so I was really kinda involved with them in a little bit of production, along with Rick Rubin. They actually picked up Dr. Dre as a DJ for a while, which was really cool. So they had Dre DJing, and in my mind, they were just so dope on the mic — especially Adam Yauch. He had a really incredible style of rhyme, and I was like, ‘This dude is amazing.’ Just like everybody else that ended up falling in love with them, that’s what was happening to me — I was like, ‘Wow, these white kids could rap.’ And Adam Yauch has this special type of rasp in his voice that made him incredible to me, so he stood out as a real vintage type of incredible MC. It was intriguing to see white guys rapping like that, being so cool, plus sticking to their roots, so they were true to themselves.” Remembering Adam Yauch with Beastie Boys’ Essential Hits Fondest Memory : “Them taking the Mercedes-Benz emblems [and wearing them around their necks] or hearing that kids were taking the Mercedes-Benz emblems off of cars. I remember getting to London and the press was so scared of what might happen, because the Beastie Boys were there. It was a phenomenon when I got overseas, to hear what the press was thinking about what the Beastie Boys might do. All of that stuff was just really shocking to me. The press loved Run-DMC, but it was a different type of thing that they thought the Beastie Boys were gonna bring to town with them.” Recent Memories : “A couple years ago, me and a couple of people that were working on filming ‘Run’s House’ on MTV went to their show in Brooklyn, and I came out on onstage and waved to the audience right before ‘No Sleep Till Brooklyn.’ I did so much with them over the years that I just want to keep the love alive. My tribute to them is just to tell them that I love them and what they did for hip-hop culture is legendary.” DMC Developing a Bond : “It was instant. Right away, they drank Budweiser and we drank 40 ounces of Olde English. We wore gold chains and Cadillac emblems, and they took the emblems right off Volkswagens and put them on their necks. The thing that worked with us was it was the same feeling but different expression. Their sneakers could be dirty and muddy and they could’ve had them since fifth grade, and our sneakers had to be clean, but we both rocked the music, the presentation. The personality was expressed from the same heart, with the same heart and feeling. We lived together, we toured the world together, we played together, we got drunk together, we laughed together, we cried together. You know what was good about them? It wasn’t an act. It wasn’t white rappers trying to be black — they were themselves, and we respected that. Real recognized real. At times you thought you were in a movie, but it wasn’t like they were just doing it to just to do it. It’s really them: energetic, exciting, spontaneous and very creative too.” Their Effect on Hip-Hop : “The Beastie Boys are one of the greatest groups, and I’m not just talking hip-hop — the Beastie Boys are one of the greatest groups in history. You could call them the Ramones of hip-hop. Even greater than that, they were a great rock and roll band. They made it possible for Eminem , Vanilla Ice and all these other white rappers that came up to have a place to be. They made it acceptable.” Fondest Memory : “On the Together Forever Tour, we were over in Europe, and the stage got really, really wet, because they were opening cans of beer and spraying it everywhere, so the stage was like a danger zone. We were on the side of the stage watching their show, thinking, ‘One of them is going to bust they ass,’ and MCA slipped and flew about 20 feet up in the air, came down real hard and we thought he was dead … but then he got up and they just kept going. It was the craziest thing ever.” Recent Memories : “I saw them constantly over the years. If I go to New York, I’ll see them. If I’m in L.A., I see ’em. If I go to a Rage Against the Machine show, I see ’em. If I go to a radio show, if I go to a movie premiere, I see ’em. If I walk by the basketball courts in the Village, I see them out there playing. I would always see them. It was cool, because you would always see them doing the things that they rapped about, that they said they did, and in the places they said they did. They were always at the skateboard park. They were always in the studio. They were always at the club where some new indie band was premiering.” Tune in to MTV tonight at 8 p.m. for “Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy,” an hour-long special hosted by Sway celebrating the life and career of Adam “MCA” Yauch, including his biggest moments and remembrances from his friends and peers. Justin Bieber Goes ‘More Mature’ With ‘Boyfriend’ Video

Pop star brings new clip to MTV News and answers all his fans’ questions during Thursday’s ‘MTV First: Justin Bieber.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News From the back of a Shelby Mustang right to a showroom filled with classic cars, Justin Bieber premiered his highly anticipated “Boyfriend” video on Thursday (May 3) during “MTV First: Justin Bieber.” The sexy, sunny, Director X-directed clip certainly had fans in the room cheering. The video comes to life with shots of Bieber driving a muscle car, snuggling with his beautiful co-star and getting his dance on alongside his pals, all while they chill out at a rooftop party somewhere in Los Angeles. It’s a more mature look at the growing pop star, who in only a few short years has gone from strumming his guitar on the streets of his Canadian hometown to full-fledged international pop-star status, where he fills arenas all over the world. “I kind of switched it up from all the teasers,” Bieber told MTV News’ Sway Calloway about what fans saw of the video before its premiere. “I switched up the whole video on them, and really, I think it’s super cool. I wanted to do something a little bit more mature.” The video is full of swaggy images, ranging from his varsity jacket to his cool car, but what left one fan in the “MTV First” audience most intrigued were the gold sneakers he sports in the video. “I did pick out those swaggy gold shoes,” he laughed. “They spray-painted them gold. That’s what I’m going to do: I’m gonna start wearing gold shoes all the time.” With the video’s focus on cars and friends, the 18-year-old chatted about his own personal car collection. “I have a Range Rover and a Fisker. And I have a Smart Car. It just helps me get from point A to point B. I call it my little ‘swag car,’ ” he said. While Bieber made it clear that his off-time doesn’t look a lot like the party in the video, he did share what he does on the weekends: “I work. … If I’m with my friends, we like to do regular stuff,” he said, before opening up about what he does to unsuspecting pals in an elevator. “We have this game where basically we hit each other in the balls.” In addition to opening up about the video and his unusual take on riding in an elevator, he also talked about working with pals Drake, Kanye West, Usher and Taylor Swift for his brand-new album, Believe, out June 19. “Boyfriend” is the lead single from the highly anticipated release. But with the music world conquered, he also teased his forthcoming work in Hollywood. He gave an update on his in-the-works basketball movie with Mark Wahlberg , as well as his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in “Men In Black 3.” He noted, however, “Right now I’m focused on my album and Believe. ” What did you think of the “Boyfriend” video? Skylar Laine Gets The Boot On ‘American Idol’

Perpetual bottom-dweller Hollie Cavanagh lives to see another day. By Adam Graham Skylar Laine and Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol” Photo: Fox Skylar Laine is headed back to Brandon, Mississippi. The 18-year-old country spitfire was sent home on Thursday’s (May 3) “American Idol” results episode, after receiving the fewest number of votes following Wednesday’s performance episode . Nearly 60 million votes were cast, host Ryan Seacrest reported during the show. Laine found herself in the bottom two alongside Hollie Cavanagh. Now that the field is down to five singers, there was no bottom three. When the news was delivered to Laine, she hugged Cavanagh tight at the center of the stage. After composing herself, she sang Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder & Lead” as the show closed. Just one night prior, Jennifer Lopez told Laine she had victory in her grasp. “You wanna win, don’t you?” Lopez asked Laine after she sang Dusty Springfield’s “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me,” which followed her earlier performance of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son.” Laine replied affirmatively, to which Lopez said, “I can tell. And you just might with performances like that.” In his assessment of her Wednesday performances, mentor Jimmy Iovine called Laine “a fighter” and praised her for suiting up and showing up “every night.” He said he thought she did well, though he said her take on the Dusty Springfield song lacked the “darkness” of the original. “She doesn’t deserve to go home because of that,” Iovine said, “but it was less than what I know she’s capable of.” In Iovine’s estimation, Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez should have landed in the bottom two. He said Phillips has been “coasting” and described his two performances as “very bland.” As for Sanchez, Iovine called her performance of Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” a “travesty” and said he should have talked her out of singing it when he had the chance. He said her outfit during the song was “too mature” and “too racy” and said the “Idol” wardrobe department was “torpedoing” her. Coldplay also appeared and performed two songs, “Paradise” and “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,” and fourth-season “Idol” winner Carrie Underwood stopped by and performed “Blown Away,” the title track from her latest album, which hit stores this week. New ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

We take a closer look at the latest action-packed sneak peek. By Kara Warner Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Columbia Pictures Holy web-slingers, Spidey fans: Another trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man” has arrived! While there are several familiar scenes from the first two epic teasers weaved into this exciting new two-and-a-half minutes, director Marc Webb has introduced a bunch of intriguing new elements into the new footage. Here are five key scenes from the latest trailer: Lonely Boy Webb told us previously that the fact that Peter Parker is an orphan will play heavily into the story of this film, which is very much exemplified by the multiple “lonely boy” shots of Parker standing atop various buildings or walking by himself through the city streets with a forlorn look on his face. Not to mention Andrew Garfield’s voice-over: “This life is not an easy one. I’ve made enemies, powerful enemies. I’ve put people I love in danger, but the one thing that has haunted me my entire life is finding the truth about my parents … ” “I think there’s a real emotional consequence to someone who’s left by their parents when they’re 7 or 8 years old,” Webb has said . “And that contributes to sort of this trickster, chip-on-his-shoulder attitude.” Other Mischief May Come Speaking of Parker’s trickster side, we get another glimpse of his comedic and sarcastic sensibilities during his encounter with a carjacker, as shown in the previous trailer. What’s new and fun this time around is Parker taunting the guy: “You found my weakness!” Parker says to the carjacker sarcastically. “It’s small knives!” The other intriguing and very possibly mischievous element in play here is the quick shot we see of Parker looking up at the impossibly tall and menacing Oscorp skyscraper. Yes, we know Parker is interested in the building because of its ties to his father and that Oscorp ID card he holds onto, but we can’t help but feel a little bit of foreshadowing is at play in knowing what plays out with one Norman Osborn. Lizard in a Lab Coat Behold, the recently transformed, very dangerous-looking Lizard crumpled on the floor and bursting out of his lab coat — or the lab coat of his former self, Dr. Curt Connors (played by Rhys Ifans). We’ve seen some very quick shots of the film’s central villain before, but this trailer offers us multiple glimpses at the before-and-after of Dr. Connors. And he is not at all a nice guy in his hulking green lizardy form (“Avengers” pun un-intended). We see the Lizard hurling innocent people around and later in heated pursuit of our heroic web-slinger. Mystery Man With Intel Speaking of the pre-reptilian Dr. Connors, there is a very brief, but intriguing interrogation-like scene in the trailer between Connors and an unidentified older gentleman. The gentleman looks to have long-ish white hair and is shown in a sort of shadowy silhouette asking the good doctor a very pointed question about Peter Parker and his parents. “Did you tell the boy about his father?” he says to Connors. We don’t get to hear the Doc’s response during this brief exchange, but the worried-but-stubborn look on Connors’ face says the man is definitely withholding some key information that will undoubtedly prove to be of major importance to Parker down the line. Action, Action and More Action And just like all great superheroic trailers before it, Webb spends the last minute or so of his new trailer impressing us with tons of action. We see Parker-as-Spider-Man’s extraordinary athleticism in some scenes of good old-fashioned chasery: He dodges police officers, carjackers and the Lizard, not to mention one impressive feat wherein he appears to be holding a burning car from plunging into a river — which, by the way, totally reminds us of a scene from Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man,” whether that was intended or not; we’ll have to see the finished film to decide. There is also more demonstration of Spidey’s fancy web-slingers as he masters his skills with swinging from building to building and stealthily sliding into rooms upside down. Rick Ross Tells ‘A Very Dark Story’ On God Forgives, I Don’t

‘It’s extremely lyrical. The music is next level,’ Ross says of his record, out July 31. By Rahman Dukes Sway and Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Rick Ross predicts his upcoming album God Forgives, I Don’t will take fans on a thrilling journey riddled with bone-chilling rap tales never experienced on his previous efforts. “This is my best project yet,” Ross declared, draped in all black and sparkling diamonds while sitting at his MMG press conference , reminiscent of a boss giving orders before his capos. ” God Forgives, I Don’t is a very dark story.” After a number of setbacks, Ross stamped a July 31 release date on the album he’s touting as hip-hop’s “most anticipated album of the year.” “It’s extremely lyrical. The music is next level,” Ross said. “I’m expecting nothing but the biggest results. The collaborations is gonna surprise a few of you guys.” “Surprising” is one way to describe these past months for MTV’s Hottest MC in the Game . Rozay triumphantly rose to the occasion earlier this year when he released the highly successful Rich Forever mixtape just a month after he was stricken with multiple seizures . Now, with all signs pointing toward GFID, Ross is looking to deliver on the hype of the album. “I think the stories being told on this record is going to make it stand apart from all the other albums I’ve ever done,” says Ross. “By the time you get to track two, you gonna understand this is a completely different body of work.” The rapper/entrepreneur’s stock has ballooned with every major album release, and God Forgives, I Don’t should fair no different, possibly even catapulting him into the upper echelon of galactic hip-hop MCs like Jay-Z and Nas. “This was the missing part of my legacy,” Ross stated. “This is what’s going to put me over the top right there.” Related Videos Rick Ross, Meek Mill, N.O.R.E.
