Is Tupac Coachella Hologram The Future Of Touring?

‘It’s not something that would be particularly easy for another artist to emulate,’ says veteran manager Danny Goldberg. By Gil Kaufman Tupac hologram at Coachella Photo: Getty Images Sure, the laser Pink Floyd show is totally awesome and the Beatles cover band totally nailed “Penny Lane.” But after the rapturous response to the Tupac
 Shakur hologram
at Coachella, you can be sure phones are ringing off the hook this week all over Hollywood with calls to the Digital Domain wizards behind the stunt. Think of the possibilities: The Doors resurrected with a young Jim Morrison, Nirvana on tour with a virtual Kurt Cobain or a resurrected Tupac and Biggie sharing a stage for a greatest hits show. But does the success of the Tupac mini-set mean that holograms are the touring industry’s version of 3-D movies? “I thought it was great in that particular moment,” said veteran manager Danny Goldberg, who has worked with everyone from Nirvana and Led Zeppelin to Sonic Youth and the Hives, who he was on hand to see at Coachella. “They were evoking a certain nostalgia for [the era of] gangsta rap and I thought it worked in that context and was exciting and special. I think it’s not something that would be particularly easy for another artist to emulate.” Goldberg said certain things work best the first time and if someone else was to try a holo-show they would have to find a way to make it new again, otherwise it might just seem cheesy and derivative. Part of that potential pitfall is the legacy of the artist. For example, if Paul McCartney announced a tour with a virtual John Lennon, Beatles fans would likely see that as being in bad taste and not show up. “It’s another tool in the toolbox of technology, but some tools should only be used sparingly,” he said, adding that he thought the execution at Coachella was stellar. Making the trick to work on a larger scale, or even on a full-blown tour
is unlikely given the unique aspects of the Coachella gig. “Part of what made that effective was that it was a surprise, coupled with authentic living, breathing superstars in Dre and Snoop and not over-relying on it,” said Goldberg. “I wouldn’t look at it as the beginning of a big trend, but as an amazing moment.” Fans may get another chance to experience the trick when the upcoming Cirque du Soleil-created Michael Jackson show in Las Vegas opens next year. While a spokesperson for the Jackson estate would not confirm that the MJ show would use similar technology, when MTV News spoke to Cirque President and CEO Daniel Lamarre in 2010 he said that, “The new technology that we want to bring to [the permanent] Vegas [show] will be more theatrical,” promising that fans, “Will see Vegas become the home of Michael Jackson and people will come from all over the world to experience the uniqueness of the technology that we want to bring there.” At the time, Lamarre hinted at the use of “3-D technologies and hologram technologies to allow people to see Michael Jackson onstage.” Also on hand to watch holo-Pac at Coachella was Dave Brooks, managing editor of live entertainment trade magazine Venues Today . He said he could definitely see the technology employed in several ways. “Obviously the posthumous thing is one idea,” he said. “Think about the Michael Jackson Cirque tour, or the Who bringing back a hologram of [late drummer] Keith Moon. [Bringing back] dead band members could be a way to enhance the show and plenty of people would be impressed to see a hologram of Keith Moon.” As for whether an all-hologram tour could win over audiences, based on what he’s seen so far, Brooks said it wasn’t likely … yet. “Anything is possible, but from that one glimpse of the technology I can’t say it’s enough to make a whole tour of just that.” In fact, he said having the hologram Tupac on stage for two songs was great, but it would likely have gotten tired if the West Coast legend had hung around all night. Given the amount of all-star collaborations among pop and hip-hop stars these days, Brooks said the other way he could see the technology deployed is to briefly bring some of those one-off singles to life in concert. “Because of the nature of pop music these days, with collaborations like Calvin Harris and Rihanna and Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, this could definitely add a ‘wow’ factor,” he said. “It’s one thing to have [the other singer] on a screen, but if you could have them there in 3-D it would impress more.” Related Photos Tupac’s Hologram At Coachella Related Artists Tupac

N.O.R.E. Gets Wale And Waka Flocka Hooked On His Latest Mixtape Drug

‘I wanted to pick a wild name,’ N.O.R.E. tells Mixtape Daily of his new Crack on Steroids tape. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Adam Murphy N.O.R.E. Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliners : N.O.R.E. and DJ Green Lantern Representing : Queens, New York Mixtape : Crack on Steroids Real Spit : The Super Thug is back at it again. Almost a year after dropping his N.O.R.E.aster EP, Noreaga returns with the drug-induced Crack on Steroids. “I wanted to pick a wild name so when people look at it, they’ll say, ‘What the hell is that?’ ” N.O.R.E. told Mixtape Daily about his latest release. Picking up where he left off last year with his street single “Nore Shot Somebody,” the C-N-N rapper keeps things “Grimey” on the tape-opening “Kenny Powers.” It’s not exactly an ode to the popular HBO comedy ; instead, N.O. uses Danny McBride’s fictional character as a thinly veiled reference to his distinct brand of cocaine. While partner-in-rhyme Capone was locked up in the late 1990s, N.O.R.E. proved he could hold things down as a soloist, crafting a number of hits like “Super Thug” and “Grimey.” On C.O.S., however, the Queens, New York, MC invites a number of his rap friends to the party. RZA shows up for “Hare Krishna” and Game, Busta Rhymes and Waka Flocka Flame pitch in on the Chris Brown-sampling “Lehhhgooo.” On the latter, producer Charli Brown flips Breezy’s opening ad lib from “Look at Me Now” and turns it into a catchy chorus. Wale also jumps on “Get Her” and will.i.am channels Slick Rick on “We Ain’t,” then Nore’s latest signee, Glacierz, proves she can hang with the fellas and delivers a standout verse on “War Song.” For all his guest spots, though, N.O.R.E. maintains his vibe throughout the tape — not that we expected anything less. ‘Avengers’ Director Joss Whedon Loves The ‘Duplicitous’ Black Widow

‘Her story is among my favorites, because she’s not a hero,’ he says of Scarlett Johansson’s character for Summer Movie Preview Week. By Kara Warner Captain America in “Avengers” Photo: Walt Disney Studios One of the most intriguing aspects about the very highly anticipated and superhero-studded “Marvel’s The Avengers” is in wondering how much the audience will see of each individual character, as well as what the actor in question has brought to the table in portraying a new side of their respective Marvel hero in the massive film. When MTV News caught up with mastermind and director Joss Whedon recently, we asked him if any of his castmembers brought something extra to the film via their pre-production knowledge or ideas about their storied characters. “They’re all very serious, dedicated people,” Whedon said with pride. “Scarlett [Johansson] knew more about the Black Widow than I did; that was a bit of a surprise. She claims that it was all from Wikipedia, though.” Whedon said Johansson’s character arc is one of his favorites in the film, because it’s so much different from that of the other bona fide superheroes like Captain America and Iron Man. “Her story is among my favorites, because she’s not a hero. She doesn’t live in a hero’s world; she lives in a very noir/duplicitous world of being a spy, and there’s a darkness to her and her past,” he explained. “There’s also a real beauty to her relationship with Clint Barton [a.k.a. Hawkeye] that, for me, is as exciting as anything in the movie, really.” For her part, Johansson joked with us recently at the film’s premiere that because Widow isn’t a superhero, she’s happy she survived the action-packed shoot. “We all took a pretty big beating,” she said. “I would have to say either [Black] Widow or Hawkeye [get their butts kicked hardest]. We’re on the ground, so we’re fighting hand-to-hand and it hurts.” She also teased a pretty epic fight sequence with another character she couldn’t name. “All I can say is that I had to fight someone else in this film, and they beat the crap out of me in stunt rehearsals. I have to say I could not believe it,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Can you hold it back, OK? You know, I’m trying to work it out here. I’ve got smaller muscles than you,’ ” Johansson said. “I was dragged across the [floor]. When we finally finished [filming] that scene I was just happy to be alive.” It’s Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies . Tupac Hologram May Be Coming To An Arena Near You

Visual-effects house behind the 2-D image tells Wall Street Journal that Dr. Dre has a vision beyond Coachella for his virtual friend. By Kara Warner Tupac’s hologram at Coachella Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Tupac Shakur has made quite an impact on pop culture since his death in 1996, so we shouldn’t be too surprised that his eye-popping and downright magical materialization at the Coachella music festival on Sunday night alongside Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre is dominating the headlines. The spectacular surprise has caused such a stir that there’s a chance we might be seeing a lot more of this “new” Tupac very soon. According to a Wall Street Journal interview with Ed Ulbrich of Digital Domain Media Group Inc., the visual-effects house responsible for making the rapper’s image (as well as the virtual versions of Brad Pitt in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), there are plans to take the 2-D image on tour. (Although ‘Pac’s ghostly figure has been widely reported as a hologram, Ulbrich told the Journal that its technical description is a 2-D image and not a hologram, which is 3-D.) Moving forward with discussions of a tour are representatives for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg who, according to a source close to the project, will be meeting to discuss the logistics involved in scheduling a string of performances with the virtual Tupac. The report cites one option would be to tour in stadiums and involve other hip-hop stars like Eminem, 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa. Another option is a limited tour that would only feature Dre, Snoop Dogg and the virtual Tupac in smaller arenas. “We worked with Dr. Dre on this, and it was Dre’s vision to bring this back to life,” Nick Smith — president of AV Concepts, the San Diego company that projected and staged the image — exclusively told MTV News on Monday (April 16). “It was his idea from the very beginning and we worked with him and his camp to utilize the technology to make it come to life. … You can take their likenesses and voice and … take people that haven’t done concerts before or perform music they haven’t sung and digitally re-create it.” “This is not found footage. This is not archival footage. This is an illusion [and] this is just the beginning,” Ulbrich told the Journal. “Dre has a massive vision for this.” Do you want to see virtual ‘Pac in concert? Exclusive: Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Priority Was ‘Not Dying’ In ‘Premium Rush’

Gordon-Levitt talks to MTV News about getting in shape for his role as a bike messenger thrown into an ‘extreme scenario.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “Premium Rush” Photo: Columbia TriStar Few actors can claim to have a 2012 quite as full of big movies as Joseph Gordon-Levitt . The 31-year-old actor isn’t just reteaming with his ” Inception ” director, Christopher Nolan, for ” The Dark Knight Rises ,” but he’s also starring in one of the most talked-about releases of the year, ” Looper ,” and preparing his directorial debut, “Don Jon’s Addiction.” On top of all that, this summer he’ll headline ” Premium Rush ,” an action film about a bike messenger caught up in a conspiracy. MTV News spoke with Gordon-Levitt about learning to bike like a pro, acting opposite Michael Shannon and trying not to die in the process. MTV News : A bike messenger isn’t exactly your typical action hero. What was your reaction when you first heard the concept? Joseph Gordon-Levitt : I just think it’s kind of a brilliant idea. It’s a summer popcorn action movie. Instead of glorifying cars and gun, it glorifies bicycles. I think that’s great. MTV News : It’s kind of refreshing lo-fi. Gordon-Levitt : I think that makes the action, in a way, a lot more exciting. There’s no computer-generated action in this movie. It’s all guys that actually performed these things. I had four doubles in this movie. Every day, I rode all day, but there are four other guys who are good at different things. One of them is an actual bike messenger; he rides really fast in traffic. One of them is really good at riding a trial bike, a different sort of bike, which is good jumping and stuff. Another guy does tricks but on a fixed gear bike. Another guy’s an actual Hollywood stunt man, so he’s getting hit by cars. Honestly, when an audience sees a real human being doing things, it’s just more exciting than computer-generated, what amounts to a cartoon. MTV News : How realistic is the biking in this movie? Gordon-Levitt : It’s pretty realistic. It’s definitely a fun action popcorn movie, so you know, it’s a guy in an extreme scenario. It’s not like a slice of life, everyday thing. It’s a movie like “Speed” or “Die Hard,” where a guy ends up in an extreme situation and has to deal with it. I’m on the bike most of the time. It is a movie that takes place a lot on a bike, of course, not the entire time. It all takes place in one day, and it’s a chase movie. MTV News : How long did you train to get yourself into bike-messenger shape? Gordon-Levitt : I trained every day for a couple months leading up to this movie. I rode hard every day and all day. That will take it out of you. You have to be in the proper condition to do that kind of thing. I was definitely in really good shape when we were shooting. You can’t get to be like what these guys do in a short amount of time. The guys who doubled me, they rode bikes their whole lives and are some of the best in the world. I wasn’t doing any crazy tricks or anything like that. That’s what the doubles were doing, but I definitely was riding a lot, riding through traffic, riding with cars, riding fast and doing scenes at the same time, performing dialogue and stuff. Those were definitely my favorite scenes to do. The cool thing was that we actually shot it. They would put a camera on the back of a motorcycle and go down the street, and I would ride and perform a whole scene on the phone, riding through traffic. That’s a really fun way to do a scene. MTV News : Where are your priorities when you’re acting in a scene like that? Gordon-Levitt : The priority is not dying. You can do another take and get the scene right, but then it’s just about rehearsing enough. Doing line, that’s something I’m good at. I can do that easy. It actually makes it more fun, makes the lines come to life more, to put them on a bike like that. MTV News : Similarly, having Michael Shannon as the villain has to make that character easier to fear. Gordon-Levitt : Man, that guy! I think he’s one of the best going, honestly. When I found out that he was going to play the villain, I was like, “Oh, wow. Now this is a movie.” To be perfectly frank, he is by far my favorite part of the movie. Honestly, he is so good. It’s definitely worth seeing “Premium Rush” just to see Michael Shannon play this villainous New York cop in an action movie. It’s f—ing great. Madonna Promises ‘A Feast For The Eyes’ On MDNA Tour

Singer has reportedly enlisted fashion guru Jean-Paul Gaultier to design the costumes for the tour, which kicks off May 29. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rob Imbriani Madonna Photo: MTV News Madonna is several weeks out from launching her MDNA tour . That means she’s working hard on getting every aspect of the show just right, from the music to the design to the looks. Given that Madonna is famous for her spectacular stage shows, fans of the glitzy singer have high expectations for the jaunt, which will kick off on May 29 in Tel Aviv, and will wrap around the globe before planting Stateside on August 28 in Philadelphia. When MTV News caught up with singer at the launch of her Truth or Dare perfume in New York City , she revealed that fans should expect this latest excursion to be just as eye-catching as the ones that came before. “Amazing music, incredible dancing, the team of people that I worked with for the Super Bowl is working with me on this as well,” she explained about the show, which she is currently rehearsing for. And, in the end, she hopes it will be “a feast for the eyes and the ears.” Given how decadent her Roman- and Egyptian-themed Super Bowl performance was, full of acrobatics, sparkling costumes and enough diva-tude to make Cleopatra jealous, it seems that Madge is taking all the right steps to capture that eye-popping essence for her traveling stage show. With a set list floating around that includes tracks like fan favorites “Secret” and “Deeper and Deeper,” as well as new tracks like “Turn Up the Radio” and “Girl Gone Wild,” she’s even enlisted her longtime fashion guru, Jean-Paul Gaultier, to design the costumes for the tour, according to Pink Is The New Blog . He’s worked with her on her Confessions Tour, her Re-Invention Tour, the Drowned World Tour and her Blond Ambition Tour. He’s also the man who designed her famous cone bra. It seems that the Queen of Pop will rule Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum starting at the end of this month through mid-May, according to Newsday . The pop singer and her team are rumored to have rented out the space to rehearse, but she has no plans to stop there during the tour. Madge dropped her album, MDNA , last month. Are you planning on seeing Madge on tour? Let us know in the comments!

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart Returning To ‘Breaking Dawn’ Set For Reshoots

‘Rob and Kristen will be there too, to pop in those gold contacts one last time,’ director Bill Condon posts on Facebook. By Jocelyn Vena Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment Just when “Twilight Saga” fans thought it was over, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” director Bill Condon has confirmed that the cast will have to head back up to Canada one more time to put the finishing touches on the November release. Condon took to the movie’s official Facebook page on Saturday to confirm that he’s hard at work on the final film in the franchise, including a bit more shooting. “Greetings from Los Angeles, where we’re hard at work on ‘Breaking Dawn, Part Two.’ It’s truly crazy to think that it’s been a year since we wrapped production in Vancouver , since for those of us in the editing room the work has never stopped. A film is a lot like a puzzle, with each piece — each shot, no matter how brief — needing to fit exactly with the ones around it,” he wrote in the post. “Our ‘Part Two’ puzzle is finally coming into full view, and in a few weeks we’ll be heading back north to pick up some additional shots — the last tiny missing pieces. We’re not shooting any new scenes or dialogue, just some technical work with some of our cast and stunt actors.” He added that for the re-shoots, the film’s lead couple, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart , will be back to help complete the movie. “I am really looking forward to being back on set with some of the friends I’ve made on my ‘Twilight’ journey, like the great Guillermo Navarro, our cinematographer, and his crew. And yes, Rob and Kristen will be there too, to pop in those gold contacts one last time. … “I’m excited to report that before too long we’ll have another trailer for you to decode,” he teased. “And wait until you see the first posters — they’re unlike any ‘Twilight’ images you’ve seen before. And then November 16th will be upon us and the final film will be yours!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
