Jessica Sanchez’s Almost Elimination: Other ‘American Idol’ Shockers

Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry were booted from ‘Idol’ earlier than anyone expected. By Gil Kaufman Jessica Sanchez with Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images America, you only have yourself to blame. In a pattern repeated for the past few seasons, “American Idol” viewers seem to get a little lazy this time of year and suddenly forget to vote for their favorites, putting one of the potential winners in jeopardy. Case in point: preternaturally talented teen diva Jessica Sanchez. Even after killing it on Wednesday night (again)
, Bebe Chez very nearly got sent home in seventh place Thursday night in one of the most shocking near-eliminations in recent history. The judges didn’t even have to hear her sing before they jumped up to save the singer
, but she came thisclose to becoming the latest super-talent to wash out of “Idol” way before her time. The “Idol” save has a checkered history. Sometimes it’s been pulled out for singers whose talents (and commercial prospects) were decent at best (Michael Lynche) or annoying at worst (Casey Abrams). In fact, of the four saves in “Idol” history, the only one that truly made sense was season eight’s piano-playing Matt Giraud, who only made it one more week before being sent home. With only two weeks left before their save would have timed out, Randy, Jennifer and Steven pulled out the lifeline for the one remaining contestant who truly deserves it, if only for the fact that Sanchez could break the string of wins by bland white male singers who’ve met with solid to dismal chart success over the past four seasons. If Sanchez had gotten the boot, she would have joined a fairly illustrious group of singers who were gone too soon. Among them: Jennifer Hudson : Success is the best revenge, and when Hudson was inexplicably sent home in seventh place during season three who knew she’d go on to be the first Oscar winner in “Idol” history and a musical powerhouse? Um, we did. Chris Daughtry : The second-most shocking elimination in “Idol” history has to be bald-headed steak-and-potatoes rocker Chris Daughtry. He went out in fourth place in season five, which was won by … Taylor Hicks. Yeah, that guy. After declining to take the lead singer gig in Fuel, Daughtry went on to multiplatinum success and a spot as the third best-selling “Idol” alum of all time. Melinda Doolittle: If you watched season six of “Idol” then you likely remember the powerhouse vocalist that ex-lead judge Simon Cowell dubbed “incredible.” But, somehow, Melinda got the hook in the week before the finale , beat out by Blake Lewis. You know, the beatboxing faux-hawk wearing dude who lost to Jordin Sparks? Exactly. Do you think the judges made the right call by saving Jessica? Let us know in comments below! Angelina Jolie And Brad Pitt Engaged

‘It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy,’ Pitt’s manager tells People. By Jocelyn Vena Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are engaged, Pitt’s manager confirmed Friday (April 13). “Yes, it’s confirmed,” Cynthia Pett-Dante told People. “It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy. There’s no date set at this time.” Click here to see photos of Brangelina It’s being reported that Robert Procop worked with Pitt to design a ring for his longtime love. A statement from the jewelry designer to The Hollywood Reporter, which originally reported the engagement, read: “I can confirm that, yes, Robert Procop did indeed design an engagement ring for Angelina Jolie, designed in collaboration with Brad Pitt.” People also obtained a statement from the designer: “Brad had a specific vision for this ring, which he realized over a yearlong collaboration with Robert. He wanted every aspect of it to be perfect, so Robert was able to locate a diamond of the finest quality and cut it to an exact custom size and shape to suit Angelina’s hand.” Procop, who works with Jolie on her “The Style of Jolie” jewelry line, added, “Brad was always heavily involved, overseeing every aspect of the creative design evolution. The side diamonds are specially cut to encircle her finger. Each diamond is of the highest gem quality.” Rumors of an engagement originated when Jolie — along with Pitt and their son Pax — was spotted with a whopping piece of bling on her finger. The family was photographed at a private viewing at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Chinese Galleries on Wednesday. The pair got together in 2005 after meeting on the set of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” when Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston. They have six kids together, who frequently travel with the couple across the globe. The twosome have been pretty vocal over the years about not getting married until everyone has the right to marry, but in an interview earlier this year with THR, Pitt seemed to be warming up to the idea, mostly because of their kids. “We’d actually like to,” he said of his seven-year partner, Jolie, “and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment.” He added, “I’m not going to go any further. But to be in love with someone and be raising a family with someone and want to make that commitment and not be able to is ludicrous, just ludicrous.” Related Photos Lovebirds: Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie

Return Of ‘Girls’ Power: HBO Series Gets It Right

Above The Buzz examines Lena Dunham’s dramedy about four women living in NYC. By Jocelyn Vena Lena Dunham in “Girls” Photo: HBO Blah, blah, blah. Yes, “Girls” is a lot like “Sex and the City” in the fact that both shows are about women — four, to be exact — living, loving and working in New York City. And that’s about it. Maybe “Girls” is the best “SATC” prequel that creator Michael Patrick King never pitched: It’s dark with little spots of comic relief, as these women try to figure out how to get it right. And they rarely do. They are stuck in jobs that seem to have no future and relationships that make them awful about themselves. Where “Sex” was all about how fabulous NYC is, “Girls” is all about how hard (and expensive) it can be to try and make a dream happen in a town where everyone has a dream. Perhaps the big difference is “Girls” is created by a young woman in the throes of her own post-adolescence angst. Lena Dunham, 25, the show’s creator , writer, director and star, truly understands what it feels like to be stuck in your mid-twenties struggling with the pains of having to grow up. In fact, her vision of this stage of life seems to be so spot-on that it got her an assist from the show’s producer, Judd Apatow. (She previously examined those similar themes in her feature film, “Tiny Furniture.”) Not to discredit “Sex.” It did an amazing job capturing life in NYC as an aspiration. You too can move to NYC, date rich, powerful dudes, afford fancy cocktails at all the hottest hot spots and glide along Fifth Avenue in Manolo Blahniks. But first you must be one of the “Girls,” who also include Allison Williams (news anchor Brian Williams’ daughter) playing Type-A gallery assistant Marnie, Jemima Kirke, a flighty, free spirited Brit Jessa and Zosia Mamet, the “SATC”-loving college student Shoshanna. Dunham plays Hannah, a writer who talks a lot about her memoir without having actually done very much to get it off the ground, relying on her parents for money. The show, which premieres Sunday on the former home of “Sex,” HBO, is about trying to have it all, but not knowing how to get it. These “Girls” are from a generation of women who have been told they can do an-y-thing. But, the problem is, as most jumped straight into their careers right out of college, they never really had the time to nail down what it is they want. This confusion leaks into their personal lives, where they battle depression and self-esteem issues. They date men they don’t care much about or who don’t care much about them. It’s an interesting breakdown of the current state of girl power: Can these girls really do an-y-thing? Well, Dunham and her pals are certainly trying to figure that out, one episode at a time. Early ‘Avengers’ Reviews Point To Fan And Box-Office Gold

Will the superhero all-star flick live up to the hype? Fans who got an early peek seem to think so. By Eric Ditzian Chris Hemsworth in “Avengers” Photo: Marvel “The Avengers,” apparently, rules. After a string of Los Angeles screenings, nerdy tastemakers have been squealing all over Twitter about what director Joss Whedon has delivered for this loooooong-in-development superhero all-star flick. “Like, double plus awesome,” declared Seth Green. “Lost” guru Damon Lindelof came up with a Twitter hashtag that’s a little too colorful to reprint here without a tweaking: . To Lindelof, I say right back: F—yeah! Because, honestly, what a relief! For a while now on “Talk Nerdy,” Brian Phares and I have been expressing worries like:

‘American Idol’ Report Card: Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet On Top

Remaining seven get current Wednesday night, taking on hits from this decade with surprisingly great results. By James Montgomery Joshua Ledet Photo: Getty Images On Wednesday’s “American Idol,” the crowd was crazy (except for poor Hollie Cavanagh), the judges slightly cracked (comparing Phillip Phillips to the lovechild of Steve McQueen and Johnny Cash) and the music actually current. Shoot, for a second there, you probably thought you were watching “The Voice” or something. Yes, it was a big night in “Idol” land, as the top seven took on songs from this decade with surprisingly good results. Most soared and scored, and though we can’t believe no one did an Adele tune, we’ve gotta say, the remaining contestants definitely brought the goods. Perhaps they should just sing contemporary songs every week? But whose performances earned the highest marks? Who fell to the back of the class? And what the heck was going on with the crowd after Hollie’s performance? For answers to all of those questions and more, here’s our “American Idol” report card: Jessica Sanchez: Her family is officially my favorite ever. Her decision to do Jazmine Sullivan’s “Stuttering” may have mystified Jimmy Iovine, but it was clearly the right call. She split the difference between previous big-voiced stunners and all that Bebe Chez stuff, threw in some stank (and some scatting) and delivered a performance that, quoth Randy Jackson, “Slayed the biggest fish of the night.” So much voice, so emotionally over-the-top, and so diva-riffic — and all seemingly so effortless, Sanchez flexed her talents and fired back after a few weeks in the wilderness. “Every time I hear you sing, I forget where I am,” Steven Tyler said. So, he hears her sing in grocery stores and behind the wheel? A- Joshua Ledet: He acted adorably upon getting a birthday message from Fantasia. He’s clearly found his lane over the past few weeks, and his confidence seems to grow with each subsequent performance. This week, he did Bruno Mars’ “Runaway Baby,” which started vampy, campy and maybe even a tad bit old fashioned (even for a retroist like Mars), but it really picked up speed in the second half, building to a big note and a fiery finish, earning Ledet the night’s first standing ovation. He’s certainly a dynamic performer, but is he also a current one? That might be the only thing standing between him and the title. Oh, and Colton Dixon’s female fanbase. Grade: B+ Hollie Cavanagh: Man, even her hometown visit was boring. Chose to sing Pink’s “Perfect” (or, as she put it, “Pay-feckt”) and, clearly rattled by repeat visits to the bottom three, had the thousand-yard stare going from her intro package onward. But, she delivered the goods onstage, with a performance that was both confident and restrained. And that last note! Apparently, however, my opinion was in the minority, as the judges did everything short of zipping up her suitcases and booking her a window seat. J.Lo gave her the “You look beautiful” and the “We’ll see how it all pans out” (double kiss of death). Steven mumbled something about it “Not being perfect,” and Randy, addressing the odd vacuum of tension in the room, only added, “It’s all of a sudden very quiet in here.” Jeez, this is getting difficult to watch. End it now. B Skylar Laine: Producers introduced us to her new Twitter tag — #skoutlaws — which, upon first glance, looks like “Skoal” (oddly fitting). She played it safe by choosing Kellie Pickler’s “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You,” which showed off her vocal range by … uh, displaying how adept she was at playing rhythm guitar. Her performance was proficient, professional and pretty much perfect, but still felt like a step back from last week’s breakout “Wind Beneath My Wings.” Loved the hobo trashcan fires though. B- Elise Testone: She decided to tackle Lady Gaga’s “You and I” ( told you she would ) and was sadly talked out of playing drums by Jimmy Iovine, which probably would’ve been the unintentional comedy highlight of 2012. The performance was passionate, if not particularly polished, but that’s been par for the course with her in recent weeks. She can bring it, for sure, though if (when) she survives, perhaps it’s time to soften things up just a tad? “Elise is back!” Randy enthused. Until next week, of course. B- Colton Dixon: The most famous alumnus of the Middle Tennessee Christian School (go Cougars!) went Apex Predator this week, throwing shade at fellow fella Phillip Phillips and swinging for the fences with Skylar Grey’s “Love the Way You Lie.” With a string section, some smoke and a soaring-for-the-sake-of-soaring bridge, Dixon was clearly in it to win it, though thanks to the arrangement’s languid pacing and CDix’s longing stares into the camera, this one very nearly veered into self-parody. The girls loved it, of course. Oh, and any time Steven and Randy compliment your choice of jacket, well, perhaps it’s time to fire your stylist. C+ Phillip Phillips: “Idol” producers played up his rural roots and pawn-shop past by piping the theme from “Sanford and Sons” into his hometown package. Classy. Phillip refused to take part in Iovine’s Machiavellian scheme to pit him against Colton, which automatically makes me like him 10x more than CDix. His version of Maroon 5’s “Give a Little More” featured all the usual Phillips’ trademarks (grouting, foot shuffling, forehead-veining) though, credit where credit is due: Thanks to the addition of a sax player, he basically turned this into a Dave Matthews Band performance. “I think we’ve seen that a couple times,” Randy said. Yeah, dawg, like on Under the Table and Dreaming. C Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘Looper’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stares down his older self (Bruce Willis) in sneak peek of the time-traveling thriller. By Kara Warner Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “Looper” Photo: Sony Pictures Entertainment We’ve been dying to see the “Looper” trailer for the past few days, and now it’s finally here, in all its time-traveling, gun-fighting, trained assassin-vs.-himself glory. Here are five key scenes from the sneak peek: Loopers Explained Thanks to the expository voice-over from star Joseph Gordon-Levitt , we learn that Loopers are time-traveling assassins hired by Mafioso types to kill other criminals in the past, so they don’t become problems in the future. We see Gordon-Levitt’s character “at work” in several different ways in the teaser — including one in which his assignment turns out to be his older self. A Realistic Futuristic Setting At the beginning of the trailer, it appears as if the film is set in present day. The characters’ style of dress, cars and guns are not exactly current, but they look familiar. All that changes when we see Gordon-Levitt’s character flying through a modern-looking city on a not-of-this-world motorcycle. The brief glimpses at advanced technology are paired with quick shots of what Gordon-Levitt’s character experiences when he travels through time, a sort of mind-bending distorted reality that tells us we’re in a not-too-distant future. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Bruce Willis From the moment it was announced that Gordon-Levitt would be playing a younger version of Bruce Willis , we’ve been very curious to see how that might look onscreen. Thanks to this new teaser, we finally get a glimpse of Gordon-Levitt-as-Willis, via a close-up shot of their bright green eyes and a few hints at their similar body movements — before they start trying to kill each other, that is. Gordon-Levitt admitted that he spent three hours in a makeup chair every morning in order to step into Willis, as it were. Emily Blunt in Action Emily Blunt’s appearance in the trailer is almost of the blink-and-you-miss-it variety. We see Blunt wielding a shotgun, possibly in an attempt to off the young version of Gordon-Levitt and in several states of strife. Her scenes are almost a combination of action from the film’s present settings and its flashbacks. Why is she upset? Is she related to Gordon-Levitt and Willis’ character or romantically linked to them? Maybe she is also a Looper? So many questions that need answering! Gunfights Galore This movie is very much a science-fiction thriller and yet, contrary to what a lot of people believe to be true about gun battles in sci-fi movies, there are no laser beams or space guns in sight. The weapons we see in the trailer look like new versions of handguns and shotguns that are powered by regular bullets. And because this is a movie about time-traveling hitmen who off their assignments with guns, we see a lot of gunfight action in this spot, along with some hand-to-hand combat, that only adds to the gritty, futuristic-yet-realistic feel. ‘American Idol’ Judges Save Jessica Sanchez

On a wild results show, front-runners Sanchez and Joshua Ledet face elimination, with the judges using their save to spare the diva. By James Montgomery Jessica Sanchez, Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol” Photo: Fox A shocking Thursday night on “American Idol” began with an onscreen pledge to “Expect the Unexpected,” and boy, did the show live up to that promise. Because, for the first time in the unusually staid 11th season, there really is no clear-cut front-runner, as perceived favorites were relegated to the bottom three and one potential champion was left to sing for her life — almost. After the final seven sang the songs of this decade on Wednesday night’s telecast, most assumed it would be permanent bottom-dweller Hollie Cavanagh sent packing, especially after the judges were left grasping for compliments following her performance of Pink’s “Perfect.” Instead, Cavanagh was spared elimination (and even a spot in the bottom three), and, after a few tense moments, in which front-runners like Colton Dixon and Skylar Laine were left twisting, it was revealed that, this week, the three on the chopping block were Elise Testone — no real surprise, given that she’s been in this position before — and, amazingly, a pair of championship hopefuls: Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez. The judges were understandably shocked by the reveal — Randy Jackson even called the bottom three “ridiculous” — but the surprises didn’t end there. Host Ryan Seacrest would first announce that Ledet was safe, leaving only Testone and Sanchez clinging for their lives. After ratcheting up the tension to the nth degree, Seacrest announced that Testone was also safe, meaning Sanchez, the prodigiously talented, supremely cocky diva, was the week’s lowest vote-getter. In a way, it was fitting that former “Idol” castoff Jennifer Hudson performed earlier in the telecast, because a potential Sanchez exit would have been the most shocking moment on the show since Hudson was given the boot all the way back in 2004. And as the crowd whistled in disapproval, Sanchez grabbed the microphone to sing for the judges’ save — only to be interrupted by Jennifer Lopez, who shouted “Gimme that mic” and announced, along with Jackson and Steven Tyler, that Sanchez would remain in the competition. “We are saving Jessica without any doubt,” Jackson emphatically said. “This girl is one of the best singers in America ever!” The obviously shell-shocked Sanchez was then allowed to finish her song, and as the show came to a close, the judges urged “Idol” viewers to vote for the best contestant going forward. But after the night’s startling results — and without a judges’ save going forward — the deck has certainly been reshuffled, and the stakes are higher than ever before.
