WonderCon Preview: Aliens And Spiders And Zombies, Oh My!

Annual convention welcomes talent from ‘Prometheus,’ ‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ and more. By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: Universal Pictures Although summer blockbuster season is still a few months away, the lucky fans making the trek to WonderCon this weekend in Anaheim, California, will be getting a very special sneak preview of a few of the summer’s most-anticipated films. The annual comic book, sci-fi and fantasy fest kicked off Friday (March 16) and continues through the weekend with an action-packed schedule of events that include panel discussions, artist meet-and-greets, costume competitions and, of course, movie previews. MTV News will be making the trek down to the Con for a full day of preview presentations and interviews with some very special guests. Here’s a quick preview of what to expect from the studios and films scheduled to appear at the Anaheim Convention Center on Saturday: 20th Century Fox : “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” and “Prometheus” Fox will debut exclusive new footage and the stars and filmmakers from two of the most buzzed-about films this year at the Con. “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” is the tale of one of America’s most beloved historical figures reinvented as a vampire-killer, and star Benjamin Walker, director Timur Bekmambetov and writer Seth Grahame-Smith will be on hand to discuss it. “Prometheus” marks the highly anticipated return of director Ridley Scott to his “Aliens” origins, although the extent of which we are unsure because the film is shrouded in secrecy. Sir Scott will be joined by screenwriter Damon Lindelof and stars Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron. Universal : “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Battleship” First-time feature director Rupert Sanders will present a never-before-seen reel of footage from “Huntsman” alongside star Charlize Theron. “I’m going to present a piece that I’ve cut specifically for WonderCon, a five-minute piece that is very different from anything else that’s been seen,” Sanders told MTV News recently. “We made our announcements at Comic-Con and just over a year later, it’s been a quick turnaround on this project, so it’s going to be nice to go back to WonderCon this time and show them an original piece, tailored specifically for them.” Fans will also get an exclusive look at new footage from “Battleship,” presented by director Peter Berg, Brooklyn Decker and Alexander Skarsgard. Sony : “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Looper,” and “Resident Evil: Retribution” Sony is set to get your Spidey sense tingling with a sneak peek at new footage from director Marc Webb’s interpretation of the web slinger’s origins as portrayed by Andrew Garfield. Webb will be joined by star and current “it” girl Emma Stone. Fans will also receive a first look at the intriguing sci-fi thriller “Looper,” in which time travel is utilized by hired killers. Writer/director Rian Johnson will make an appearance with star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays a young version of Bruce Willis’ character in the film. Sony is also sending up a sneak peek of the latest installment in the “Resident Evil” franchise, “Resident Evil: Retribution,” with director Paul W.S. Anderson and star Milla Jovovich. Fun. Call ‘We Are Young’ Success ‘Weird Icing’ On Cake

Band talks to MTV News backstage at SXSW about their breakout single, which sits at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. By James Montgomery Fun. performs at the 8th Annual MtvU Woodie Festival Photo: C Flanigan/ FilmMagic AUSTIN, Texas — Last week, Fun. became the first rock act in nearly four years to ascend to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, as their breakout hit “We Are Young” overtook Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” as the #1 song in the country. And while that was certainly shocking, this week Fun. proved that their success was no fluke, as “Young” remains atop the charts for a second consecutive week. And when MTV News caught up with the guys backstage at the mtvU Woodie Awards (where they’d subsequently play the song to rapturous applause), they let us in on a little secret: They can’t believe any of this is happening either. “It’s weird. It’s amazing. Actually, the last year, ever since we started making the album Some Nights, has been a daydream that has come true,” frontman Nate Ruess said. “I mean, in 10 years of us doing this, collectively, we never thought we’d have a #1 song. Probably since we were 14 years old, we realized those type of things were impossible.” “We thought we were too old, like, a decade ago,” guitarist Jack Antonoff laughed. And yet, here they are, with the #1 song in the country and an album that only continues to pick up speed. And though it’s certainly a dream come true, Fun. are trying very hard to keep their heads to the ground, and push on to bigger and better things. While still remaining humble, of course. “We’re used to being the bridesmaids, and we always wanted to be the bridesmaids, and I hope we can still continue to be the bridesmaids, it’s who we are,” Ruess said. “Any of this stuff is just some sort of weird icing on a very weird-ass cake.” Then again, there are some definite perks to being #1 … like no longer having to engage in awkward conversations with family members. Because after a decade spent slogging it out in different bands, Fun. have finally earned the approval of the most important of critics: their parents. “The weirdest part is our extended family now feels like we’re doing OK,” Antonoff said. “Forever our entire extended family has been like ‘Are you OK? Maybe there’s a career in management.'” The best of the 2012 Woodie Awards will air Sunday, March 18 at 8 p.m. ET on MTV and mtvU. Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons On Upset Alert In Musical March Madness

With first-round voting open until Sunday at midnight, a host of MMM favorites appear headed for an early exit … unless you vote them through. By James Montgomery Marcus Mumford Photo: Getty Images It’s been a wild opening week in the 2012 Musical March Madness tournament, with plenty of potential upsets in the works and even more allegations of voter fraud levied by angry Tokio Hotel fans (a yearly MMM tradition!) And while there’s still time to vote in all first-round matchups — polls close Sunday at midnight ET — as the week wraps up, we figured it was a good time to recap all the action: the shocking results, the 4chan-inspired chicanery and all the fierce, fan-driven mania that makes Musical March Madness tick. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! But first, let’s address the allegations lobbed by Tokio Hotel’s fervent fanbase. After jumping out to a huge lead over fifth-seeded Arcade Fire in their first-round matchup (something like 140,000 votes), TH’s supporters watched in abject horror as the Fire quickly closed the gap and eventually took the lead. Gains of this size don’t happen every day, so we started getting a lot of feedback from Tokio fans, most claiming that there was something fishy happening with the votes (of course, others just said we were part of a massive conspiracy against their beloved Kaulitz brothers). Since the integrity of MMM is our top priority, we investigated, and it turns out those fans were right. It seems some overzealous, web-savvy fans were helping swing things in Arcade Fire’s favor, writing scripts that repeatedly voted for AF … and we mean repeatedly (like 90,000 times each). And while that level of cheating was definitely inspired, well, it’s still cheating, so we scrubbed all the votes in question, and returned Tokio Hotel to their rightful lead. They’re up by some 200,000 votes at the moment, and appear a lock to advance to the second round. We’ll be monitoring things much closer from here on out, but, for the moment, all is right with the world. And please, let’s keep it clean, folks. Cheaters never win. Of course, there are still plenty of other eye-opening (and legitimate) results to discuss as the first round wraps up, perhaps none more shocking than the upset brewing in the East region, where top-seeded Mumford & Sons are on the verge of getting booted from the tourney by Canadian crushers F—ed Up (we see you, Damian!) Right now, it’s the underdogs in the lead by nearly 11,000 votes, and we’ll be watching to see if they can hold on to the lead. Mumford fans, you’ve got your work cut out for you if you want to keep your favorite band in the tourney, so get cracking. Things are looking equally grim for the West’s #1 seed, the Foo Fighters, who are getting absolutely blasted by #16 James Durbin. The “American Idol” bandanna enthusiast surged to the lead early in the week, and has yet to wilt beneath the Foos’ full-court press. Can he keep it up through Sunday? We’ll just have to wait and see, but it appears like Durbin may be bound for round two. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! And while both of those matchups are verging on blowouts, others are too close to call, and probably will remain that way until the last vote is counted. The West’s #3 seed, Blink-182, are getting all they can handle from #14 Korn, and the East’s #3, Florence and the Machine, are on the brink of getting booted by reunited Swedish vets Refused, who hold a slim (like 2,000 votes) lead. Also in the East, #6 Fun. fell behind #11 Semi Precious Weapons early, but have rallied, and now lead by roughly 1,000 votes. Oh, and there’s quite a battle brewing between Maroon 5 and upset-minded Lana Del Rey, who have been locked in a fierce back-and-forth all week. Right now, it’s Del Rey by less than 2,000 votes. Can she shock the world? We’ll be watching closely. And speaking of shocking the world, there’s a potential game-changer taking place in the East’s Coldplay/Arctic Monkeys tilt, where the Monkeys lead Chris Martin and company by just 200 votes. These two have been going back and forth all week, and this one seems destined to go down to the wire. And that’s fitting … like we said, it’s been a wild ride already. Is your favorite band on the ropes? Get voting. And check back Monday, when we reveal the 32 bands that will move one step closer to hoisting the big gold trophy on April 3. MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament is under way! Voting in the first round runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 18, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it’s gonna be a war! Related Videos Musical March Madness Returns! Jennifer Lawrence Preparing Her ‘Bradley Cooper Box Set’

‘I’m an actor digging through Angelina Jolie’s garbage,’ ‘Hunger Games’ star jokes to MTV News about replacing the actress in Cooper’s next flick. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News “The Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence has admitted she’s not sure when she’ll be on set for the next film in the franchise, “Catching Fire,” but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have plenty of projects to keep her busy until then. “I just wrapped a movie called ‘The Silver Linings Playbook,’ and that’ll be out at some point, I don’t know when,” Lawrence told MTV News recently. “And then I’m going to go shoot another Bradley Cooper movie. It’s not a Bradley Cooper movie — Bradley Cooper’s in the movie — it’s a Jennifer Lawrence movie with Bradley in it,” she joked. “Bradley Cooper and I are going to come out with a Jennifer Lawrence/ Bradley Cooper box set.” That box set, should it ever get made, would focus on two very different films starring Lawrence and Cooper: “Silver Linings,” due in November, revolves around a man who tries to put his life back together after spending years in a mental institution, while “Serena” is about a Depression-era couple who face personal complications when they learn the wife cannot bear children, possibly destroying the future of their lumber company. Lawrence will play Cooper’s wife in “Serena,” a part originally intended for Angelina Jolie. “I’m not at the status where I have her roles. I have her leftovers, let’s be clear,” she joked of Jolie. “She left it for me. I have her garbage. No, that’s a wonderful place to be. I’m an actor digging through Angelina Jolie’s garbage. I’ve made it.” Shooting on “Serena” has yet to start. Although Lawrence has several films on her production docket, she wouldn’t rule out getting back into the “X-Men” mindset as Mystique if given the chance. “I would love to do another one. I’m hearing the same as everyone else, there’s mumblings,” she said of her “First Class” role. “I can’t wait to get painted again.” If fans can’t wait that long to see Lawrence’s on the big screen, they can head to theaters on March 23 when the highly anticipated “Hunger Games” hits theaters. Pauly D Reflects On ‘Jersey Shore’ Finale

‘This season, we kind of appreciated Jersey more,’ he tells MTV News of season five. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sway and Pauly D Photo: MTV News In a sea of laughs (courtesy of Vinny trying to hook up with two lesbians) and drama (including the Situation gossiping about Deena’s sister’s bedtime activities with his brother) on the “Jersey Shore” season finale, perhaps the biggest drama of all was caused by a prank pulled by Pauly D and Vinny. After the crew returned from a camping trip, they found that their pals had pulled the ultimate practical joke, putting all their belongings and the house’s furnishings outside. While almost everyone laughed it off, their pal the Situation didn’t find it as amusing, complaining ad nauseam about the joke. “The finale’s crazy because we go all out with the pranks,” Pauly told MTV News about the season ender. “So me and Vinny, we’re like prank-war champions. The whole house [suffers]. They appreciate it, but they get mad.” It capped off a season that was full of fun, drunken nights, as well as some real emotion, especially when Vinny left the house for a minute to deal with his anxiety issues . In the end, Pauly recalled all the laughs he shared with his roomies. “Well, this season, we kind of appreciated Jersey more,” he said. “So we took advantage of it and everything it has to offer. We were in Italy for so long [last season] that we never were away from the country for that amount of time, so you realize how much you miss gym, tan, laundry. There was no tanning beds in Italy. “Something that surprised me? When Vinny left,” he added about his buddy’s short break from the house. “I never thought he would ever leave me. So he left me, but good thing we brought him back.” With season five over, it’s not clear if the show will come back for a sixth season . If it does happen, Pauly D is down to hit Seaside again. “Absolutely! I’m there! I love summers on the Jersey Shore,” he said. “I love it as a show, and I love it with my roommates. I wouldn’t do it without [them]. I gotta do it with them. I want all of them, and I want the Jersey Shore.” Until then, fans can get their DJ Pauly D fix with his spin-off, “The Pauly D Project,” kicking off on March 29, the same day as the premiere of “Punk’d.” And of course, the “Shore” spin-off featuring mom-to-be Snooki and JWoww is currently in production. Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. For continuing “Shore” coverage, be sure to check in with MTV’s Remote Control blog. Lil Wayne Brings His YMCMB Family To SXSW

Mystikal, Birdman, Cory Gunz and others help Weezy kick off his Mountain Dew partnership in Austin. By Nadeska Alexis Lil Wayne performs at SXSW on Thursday Photo: Hutton Supancic/ Getty Images YMCMB. Trukfit. DeWeezy. And repeat. When Lil Wayne took over the Austin Music Hall for his SXSW show in Texas on Thursday night, the rapper-turned-skateboarder had the venue draped in banners upon banners, shouting out his team, his new clothing line and his new partnership with Mountain Dew. Earlier in the day, Wayne invited his pro skateboard friends — including Paul Rodriguez and Theotis Beasley — to get their grind on on the top floor of the venue while the Mountain Dew-sponsored show was being prepped. By showtime later that night, the boys were all freshly prepped for their closing appearance at the concert. (For photos from the concert, click here.) And while Wayne saved his skateboard family to wrap the night, his YMCMB family members came out to open the show and made brief appearances throughout his set. U.K. singer Jay Sean hit the stage early, along with Lil Chuckee and recent Cash Money signee Mystikal, who gave the crowd a taste of his hits including “Here I Go” and “Shake Ya Ass.” Wayne finally hit the stage around 12:30 a.m., decked out in his Trukfit gear, with skateboard in hand, bringing a burst of energy for fans who’d already started a few “Weezy” chants in anticipation of his performance. He kicked things off with “I’m Goin’ In,” and “A Milli,” with head banging and dreads flying everywhere. During his one-hour set, Wayne gave the crowd some words of inspiration on falling and getting back up. “Life is like skateboarding,” he said. He later dropped another one-liner, “It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it,” admitting to the crowd that they’d just participated in a commercial shoot for his new DeWeezy campaign with Mountain Dew. With that out of the way, there were still plenty of hits left to go around, including “She Will” and “Blunt Blowin’,” plus a few more guest appearances. Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga were all noticeably absent from the show, but after giving them a shout-out, Wayne brought out a few more YMCMB members including Shanell, Bow Wow, Gudda Gudda, Mack Maine and Birdman, who performed his single “Y.U. Mad.” Despite Drake’s absence, Wayne delivered his verse on “The Motto” and saved Tha Carter IV single “6 Foot, 7 Foot” for the finale. Maybe the most surprising cameo of the night came from rapper Cory Gunz, who was recently arrested for gun possession. The young Gunz joined Wayne and his crew of pro skateboarders onstage to assist on the track before calling it a night.
