Rihanna And Chris Brown Collaboration ‘Not Surprising’

One domestic-violence expert talks to MTV News about the former couple’s new songs. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Brown and Rihanna in 2009 Photo: Getty Images When Rihanna and Chris Brown dropped not one, but two tracks together Monday night, the songs were met with mixed reactions. Some fans thought it was time for everyone to move on and embrace the former couple’s next chapter, while others argued that given Brown’s 2009 assault on Rihanna, it was inappropriate for them to record together. In the years since that assault, Rihanna has been open about her abusive relationship with the R&B singer, saying, “I don’t want to be the big domestic-violence spokesperson, because that doesn’t define who I am. But if I can help young women in any way, and that being one of the things they need help with, then I’ll do that.” Since that late 2009 interview with MTV News, Rihanna certainly hasn’t backed down in her career, releasing chart-topping singles, winning awards, going on tour and using videos and Twitter to show the world just how fierce she can be. After the release of the “Birthday Cake” and “Turn up the Music” remixes , Rita Smith, the executive director for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, talked to MTV News about what the collaborations mean. “I guess I’m not particularly surprised given the rumors that had gone on around this, and it’s also not surprising because many victims get back with their abusers, even after an assault. They love them, they think they change, and abusers are particularly good at convincing you they’ve changed,” she said. “I don’t know what their relationship is at this point, but I’m not surprised that she’s staying connected. “I’m still concerned because his reaction to people’s criticism of him being on the Grammys was fairly belligerent, and that didn’t give me much of a message or sense of hope that he had made changes since that assault,” she said, referring to the barrage of tweets Brown sent out after negative feedback about his Grammy appearance . “I hope he’s changed. I hope that he will never choose to use violence again no matter what kind of relationship he has with her or anybody else,” she continued. “I think, for me, it would be much more powerful if they could publicly state what’s different for them so that it doesn’t just leave us wondering if anything has changed and if they have learned anything in the process, because it was so public. We’re all wondering, because they’re not saying anything. That would leave us with a different message that it all doesn’t matter and they’re just going to do what they do.” Smith said that, given their history, “I think the message she’s sending is that the feelings of being in love are more important than your personal safety.” “The thing that matters most is whether you’re safe and whether you feel respected — that’s what matters most in a relationship and that’s what we should all be focusing on,” Smith added. “That has to be the primary goal of any relationship.” In the end, Smith hopes the two pop stars have grown since the very public assault. “I don’t know what the message is. I would like the message to be: People can change, and I will never be treated that way again and I will never treat anyone that way again. If they had released a song saying this is what this represents for us, that would be such a much more fabulous, powerful story than not saying a word,” she said. “The content of the songs seems to be more in-your-face than something about ‘we’re collaborating on something because we care about the way people treat each other.’ That would have been the message that would have been nice to come out of this very public and tragic incident.” What do you think of Chris Brown and Rihanna working together in light of their history? NewJersey.com reports that Whitney Elizabeth Houston has been laid to rest beside her father, John Russell Houston: A gold hearse carrying Whitney Houston’s casket this morning pulled out of Whigham Funeral Home in Newark to head to the star’s burial in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey. Just after 11:10 a.m. today, Houston’s hearse followed behind a black Chevy pickup truck with a bed brimming with flowers — light purple roses, pink carnations and white lilies among the arrangement. “We love you, Whitney!” fans called out trotting next to the hearse for about a block as it slowly pulled away. A backseat window displayed a black and white headshot photo of the star. The driver of the hearse appeared to be crying as she played “I will always love you.” Read the full story here. Family, friends and celebrities packed into the Newark church where Whitney Houston grew up and remembered the late singer’s voice, love and — most of all — faith at her homegoing service Saturday. The nearly four-hour service featured performances from Alicia Keys, R. Kelly, the Winans family, Stevie Wonder and others. Many of the performers adapted lyrics in tribute to Houston, including Kim Burrell and Stevie Wonder, who altered his version of one of Houston’s favorite songs, “Ribbon in the Sky.” Houston died a week ago at age 48 in Los Angeles. Many of the speakers spoke about Whitney Houston’s Baptist background and her strong faith in God, including an emotional Tyler Perry, who received a standing ovation. “I am completely thankful to God for all he has done her life,” Perry said. “There is a grace that kept on carrying her. … Whitney Houston loved the Lord.” Actor Kevin Costner also received a standing ovation after he spoke of Houston’s courage when she tried out for a starring role with him in the 1992 movie “The Bodyguard.” Oprah Winfrey, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Spike Lee, Roberta Flack, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton and Houston’s former husband, Bobby Brown, were among those in attendance. Brown and his entourage later left the church during the service, but there are conflicting reports as to why he left. More:

Whitney Houston was remembered with a joyous homegoing service today in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey, but some controversy erupted over Bobby Brown’s appearance at his ex-wife’s funeral. For some reason Bobby left during the service, and he has released a statement explaining why. CNN reported that Bobby Brown along with his other children and family members and were not able to be seated in the church because of the size of his entourage. After being asked several times by security to move, Bobby and his family exited the funeral. Bobby released the following statement explaining the situation: “My children and I were invited to the funeral of my ex-wife Whitney Houston. We were seated by security and then subsequently asked to move on three separate occasions. “I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continue to ask us and no one else to move. Security then prevented me from attempting to see my daughter Bobbi-Kristina. In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene. My children are completely distraught over the events. This was a day to honor Whitney. I doubt Whitney would have wanted this to occur. I will continue to pay my respects to my ex-wife the best way I know how.” In the video below, Bobby Brown could be seen comforting one of his sons while waiting for their escort from the funeral. Keys, dressed in a dark suit, first happily recalled Houston as a “beautiful human being, [who would] call you for no reason at all but to say, ‘Hi.’ ” Keys, who co-wrote “Bill” with husband Swizz Beatz, said Houston also made it a habit to nurture the female singers who were following in her superstar footsteps. “She reached back to so many people; she reached back to me, to Monica and Brandy … all these beautiful young artists, and just made us feel strong and capable and loved.” “So she’s an angel to us, and has been an angel to us,” Keys added before performing a moving “Send Me an Angel.” Keys wasn’t the only singer to pay soulful tribute to the “How Will I Know” star. Whitney Houston’s Funeral: Watch It Here

Fans line streets near New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where funeral service is under way today. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Raynold D. Fabre-Jeune Whitney Houston Photo: Vince Bucci/Getty Images NEWARK, New Jersey — With her music, Whitney Houston brought joy to the lives of her family, friends and fans, so it is only right that exactly one week after her death, on the day of her funeral, all the love Whitney gave is given right back. Live video by Ustream Fans lined the streets of Newark, New Jersey, in hopes of getting as close as they could to the New Hope Baptist Church, where the funeral for Houston, who was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel on February 11, is being held. It is the same church the pop diva grew up attending and where she built a loving fanbase even as a youngster with her powerful church choir vocals. “Everybody, I want them to know that God sent us an angel, and now his angel has gone back home to rest and sing in heaven,” Patricia Copeland Williams, a Houston family friend, told MTV News on Friday upon leaving the pop star’s wake at New Hope Baptist. “We will always love her and we’ll always remember, and we’re never going to forgot Cissy, the woman that birthed her.” The Houston funeral is a private affair and only invited guests are allowed into the church and the surrounding city blocks. Before the ceremony, fans gathered outside of police barricades on the corner of Orange and Nesbitt streets, about four blocks from the church, singing Houston’s hits including “Greatest Love of All” and “I Will Always Love You.” Media outlets lined the block on the corner of Lock Street and Essex Avenue, but without an invite, that was about as close as anybody would get. Musical luminaries and close friends Clive Davis, Stevie Wonder and CeCe Winans are all expected to attend. Kevin Costner, who starred with Houston in the 1992 hit film “The Bodyguard” and ex-husband Bobby Brown are also among the expected attendees. Aretha Franklin, who is Whitney’s close family friend, had been scheduled to sing “I Will Always Love You” at the service but canceled due to illness, according to CNN . Franklin performed in Whitney’s honor Friday night at Radio City Music Hall. Stay with MTVNews.com all day Saturday for continuing coverage of Whitney Houston’s funeral services. ‘This Means War’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics aren’t buying into the love triangle between Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. By Kara Warner Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in “This Means War” Photo: 20th Century Fox “This Means War” has all the makings of a perfect romantic comedy/ action flick, including the very attractive and high-caliber stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, the capable direction of McG, comic relief from Chelsea Handler and a script from the guys whose combined talents have brought us “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “Sherlock Holmes,” “Role Models” and “Just Go With It.” The story revolves around two best friends and highly skilled CIA agents who fall in love with the same woman and go to war with each other in an effort to win her heart. We imagine the filmmakers set out to make a fun, if only slightly farfetched, popcorn flick, but the critical masses couldn’t seem to suspend their disbelief. The film has a 30 percent Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes . Read on as we fight through the “This Means War” reviews! The Story “Having great-looking stars who have the added bonus of actually being able to act makes the noisy romp “This Means War” more tolerable that it ought to be. It’s essentially a love-triangle version of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” rendered even more bombastic in the hands of “Charlie’s Angels” director McG. (Simon Kinberg, who wrote the 2005 film that spawned Brangelina, shares script credit here with Timothy Dowling.) So you’ve got your sport utility vehicles tumbling in slow motion, your gravity-defying shootouts and your obligatory explosions galore. Naturally, the premise is the most high-concept, contrived confection: Two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) who happen to be best friends also happen to fall in love with the same woman (Reese Witherspoon), who has no idea these guys know each other. They promise their shared pursuit won’t ruin their friendship, but good luck with all that.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press The Bromance Factor “The relationship that truly sizzles — from the sentiment to the satire — is the one between FDR (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy), with Pine and Hardy pulling off one of the better bromances in recent memory. … Hardy (“Inception”) and Pine (“Star Trek”) are the heart of the film — proving to be excellent opposing sides of the same coin. Both balance their characters’ cynicism with a certain sweetness, their chemistry fairly crackling, electrifying the screen almost any time they’re sharing it, whether taking down a bad guy or squabbling about who is more lovable (it’s a tossup). With Lauren, on the other hand, they are basically gentlemen, so not electrifying.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times The Suspension of Disbelief Factor, or Lack Therof “And in the film’s opening minutes, it feels as if that might be the desired effect: It’s loaded with overblown action chestnuts like from-the-hip gunplay, people dangling from the sides of skyscrapers and a gruff commanding officer. (That would be Angela Bassett, who shows up periodically to growl at her charges in a role that might have been hilarious had anyone thought to write anything legitimately funny for her.) But a good parody takes a finesse that isn’t in the vocabulary of McG, a bargain-basement Michael Bay more concerned with cool than coherence. Instead we get utter nonsense like a video store with a database that conveniently includes customer photos for the CIA to tap into. (Related: These characters are, in 2012, going to a video store?) In another scene, FDR wrestles on the floor with a small dog that has just attacked him, as Lauren stands 5 feet away, oblivious. The Farrelly brothers should sue the producers not for stealing the scene outright from ‘There’s Something About Mary,’ but for imitating it so badly.” — Ian Buckwalter, NPR The Final Word “Part spy caper, part buddy picture, part romantic comedy, part raunchy-girl-talk sex farce, This Means War has been assembled with all the haphazardness of an amateur science experiment. The project was directed by the amped-up industry go-getter McG (Charlie’s Angels), and it’s had a long trial-and-error history. The initial script dates back a century — or at least about a decade — and the string of famous guys who didn’t take the dual lead male roles reportedly includes Bradley Cooper, Seth Rogen, Sam Worthington, and, stretching even further back, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence. All this fiddling and fumbling shows on the screen. And yet, and yet … I confess I enjoyed everything that’s all over the place about the finished product. ‘This Means War’ may have been hammered together by brute Hollywood force, but there’s this going for it: It’s game to throw in anything that’ll keep the motor running.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly Check out everything we’ve got on “This Means War.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
