Drake And The Weeknd Work Like ‘Family’

Producer 40 says Drake’s ‘Crew Love’ was ‘an important record for him to make, and the Weeknd was someone that he wanted to include on that.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts The Weeknd and Drake Photo: Getty Images To his fans, the Weeknd is quite mysterious. Though the Toronto singer/songwriter stayed plenty busy putting out three free albums online last year, he has shied away from the spotlight, making very few public appearances and doing only a small number of interviews. While he remains an enigma to fans, to Drake, Noah “40” Shebib and the entire October’s Very Own team, the Weeknd (real name: Abel Tesfaye) is family. “Weeknd is obviously someone very close to us and our family. He’s from Toronto and someone we’ve been associated with and working with for quite some time,” Shebib told MTV News when we visited Toronto in December. “So that’s close to home, that’s easy. He’s in and out of the studio whatever the case is — that’s family.” Weeknd released his first album House of Balloons in March, then its follow-up Thursday in August and then completed the trilogy with Echoes of Silence in December. His music has no doubt caused a stir, and he was most recently tapped to perform at the upcoming Coachella music festival. Two key appearances on Drake’s Take Care also did a lot to raise the Weeknd’s musical profile. His soulful wails drive Drizzy’s pulsating hometown dedication “Crew Love.” Even to the unfamiliar, it’s impossible not to notice Tesfaye’s key contribution. ” ‘Crew Love’ was just a moment for Drake, as far as the content of the record and what was going on around him in his life and his people and his team and how much he cares for them,” 40 explained. “That was just an important record for him to make, and the Weeknd was someone that he wanted to include on that, and that made sense.” On “The Ride,” the Weeknd contributes in a different way, blending his vocals into the background of the track while Drake raps throughout. It’s almost as if the emerging vocalist is an instrument, rather than a guest on the track. ” ‘The Ride’ was really just a vibe, it was a vibe that the Weeknd caught, and it was just so crazy that Drake wanted to rap on it,” Shebib said. “On ‘The Ride,’ he’s definitely an instrument, and he’s singing all through Drake’s vocals.” It is all a great introduction for an artist with a ton of potential, but as for what the Weeknd has planned next, no one really knows. “He’s not interested in playing the game right now,” Shebib said. “He wants to put out his music, and I think when he’s finished putting out his music, he’ll reassess his feelings on the game.” After our interview with 40, the Weeknd released the third mixtape in his trilogy ( Echoes of Silence ), and now we wait to see what’s next. ‘Jersey Shore’ Advice: What Not To Do During A Hookup

‘If her name is Sheila, don’t call her Tawana,’ the Situation suggests. By Christina Garibaldi “Jersey Shore” stars Vinny, Ronnie and Pauly D Photo: MTV The fifth season of “Jersey Shore” is heating up with the second episode airing tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. During the premiere, we were introduced to the Situation’s best friend, “The Unit,” who managed to stir up some drama between Sitch, Snooki and her boyfriend, Jionni. We also witnessed the first (and certainly not the last) hookup of the season, between Pauly D and Snooki’s friend Ryder. Over the past few seasons, the cast of “Jersey Shore” have become sort of experts on the art of wooing the opposite sex, so when MTV News caught up with them recently, we had to ask them to lend us their valuable expertise on hooking up. Of course, they couldn’t share all the tricks of the trade, but they did agree to tell us what not to do when. “You should never text-message during hooking up,” Pauly D said. “Put your phone away.” The Situation added, “You should never call another name. If her name is Sheila, don’t call her Tawana.” The ladies of the house have some more sage advice for what you need to stay away from when putting the moves on someone new. “[Don’t] throw it all out there,” JWoww said. ” ‘I got kids, I was married, I was this, I’m bankrupt, I killed my mom’ — you don’t do that stuff.” According to Deena, one might want to keep their bodily functions to a minimum. “[Don’t] fart or burp in their face,” Deena said. JWoww added, “[Don’t] pick your nose. Don’t do anything that’s disgusting.” Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. Exclusive! ‘Hunger Games’ Cast Answers Your Questions

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth talk on-set pranks and meeting Suzanne Collins. By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by MTV UK Liam Hemsworth, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate This week has been a real treat for “Hunger Games” fans. The highly anticipated film continues to be a serious competitor in our Movies Brawl 2012 , we’ve featured three of the castmembers as part of our select group of Ones to Watch this year, and now we’re rolling out the first part of three lengthy interviews with Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. All questions were submitted via Twitter by you, the fans. The first batch features talk of hilarious on-set pranks, injuries and some details about the arena. Minor spoilers ahead for those who haven’t read the books! Be sure to check back here next week for part two of our interviews. @jjusan : I’ve heard a lot about pranking on the set… tell us one of the things that happened! Josh Hutcherson : They had a full life-sized dummy of one of our tributes that had gotten killed by a Tracker Jacker, and basically it’s all swollen and gnarly-looking and mangled, and Jennifer was out of her trailer so I took the dummy and put it inside her bathroom in her trailer. I wasn’t there for the big moment when she saw it, which I can’t believe I missed, but I’ve been told that she actually peed her pants in reaction to it. So, I was pretty proud of myself and amazed that someone actually peed their pants in fear, because I didn’t know that happened. Jennifer Lawrence : Pranks. Oh yeah, Josh, he took the dummy from one of the tributes that dies from the Tracker Jackers’ sting that is completely deformed and put it on my toilet, shut the door and [had it] holding a toilet paper roll, just for added effect. I’m in my trailer and open the bathroom door and scream and my friend grabs me and had to say “It’s fake, it’s fake, it’s fake!” I hate him. I still haven’t gotten him back for that, actually. I don’t know what to do to get him back for something like that. I’d have to find a real dead body. Liam Hemsworth : Jennifer would often try and make you laugh just before “Action.” She’d say something funny. She’d get you and really surprise you, though, because you’d be rolling up, ready for them to say “Action,” and she’d ask you some silly question about something. You’d hear it and be like, “Wait, what?” And then “Action” and you’d be like “OK. Thanks for that.” It’s funny to her, I guess. @PRIMdelenaTVD : What can you tell us about the arena? What was it like? Hutcherson : The arena is a giant. It’s a forest, pretty much. We shot it in the mountains of North Carolina, just outside of Asheville, and it’s pretty cool. The terrain we had to get through to get our cameras and equipment there was impressive that we even got it made in time. It looks amazing on film, too. @OttoRivera : Have you met Suzanne Collins? Lawrence : I have, she’s wonderful. That was, I think, the most nervous I’ve ever been meeting a person because I kept thinking, “What if she doesn’t like me?” But I did meet her, and she’s fantastic. @HGTribute_Manda :What’s the most difficult scene to shoot? Hutcherson :The cave scene for me, where Katniss and Peeta are in the cave after Katniss has rescued Peeta more or less, was tough to shoot, also my favorite scene to shoot because we didn’t have a lot of time. We had a lot of scene to get through and a lot of character arc to get through, so for me that was really fun but also a really big challenge. @eringabin : Did you get any injuries during filming? Lawrence : Yeah. There was the trees, there was tree climbing, getting scratched up by trees. My back started getting weird, I think from all the running downhill, so I had to go to the chiropractor once a week, which is terrifying . I’ve never been to a chiropractor before and it just feels like they’re going to snap your neck at any moment. There were some ankle and knee [injuries] but you don’t have time to be injured. The look on the producer’s face if I say “ow” is awful, so I tried to just kind of stay quiet about it. All month long, the stars of “The Hunger Games” will be answering your Twitter questions, exclusively for MTV News. Check back every Thursday in January for more answers from Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. Justin Bieber’s Next Album Is ‘Ridiculous’

Manager Scooter Braun tweets from studio where singer is working on Believe. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel / WireImage With Justin Bieber in full-on album recording mode, his longtime manager, Scooter Braun, has heard just what the teen star is up to and wants everyone to know that Believe is a game-changer for the singer. “Wow!! In the studio with @justinbieber and #Believe is going to be ridiculous!!!” he tweeted about the 17-year-old’s 2012 release. Braun’s message came the same day that Bieber announced that he’s officially working on the project. “Start recording full time for #BELIEVE today. let the fun begin! #newMusic,” he tweeted on Tuesday, hours later adding, “#studio.” But it seems that he’ll take a break to hit up the Consumer Electronics Show, which is currently under way in Las Vegas. “Gonna see what is coming next. #gadgetNERD,” he proclaimed. While Bieber has said that he wants his next release to recall Justin Timberlake’s Future Sex/Love Sounds sonically, in a recent interview with V magazine, he noted that what he’ll be singing is a bit more PG than the topics Timberlake covered on that album. “I’m not going to try to conform to what people want me to be or go out there and start partying, have people see me with alcohol. I want to do it at my own pace,” Bieber says in the issue. “I don’t want to start singing about things like sex, drugs and swearing. I’m into love, and maybe I’ll get more into making love when I’m older. But I want to be someone who is respected by everybody.” Bieber may not want to get too graphic on this album, but vocal producer Kuk Harrell did note to MTV News that he will be maturing on it in his own way. “The only conversation we’ve had about Justin’s album that we’re about to do is it’s really important that it’s the proper transition because we’ve seen him [with] ‘Baby,’ now we’re watching him grow up,” said Harrell, who also worked with the singer on Under the Mistletoe. “And we can’t just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There’s a record in between.” Are you looking forward to Justin’s next album? Tell us on our Facebook page! Richard Armitage’s Journey To ‘The Hobbit’ Best ‘By Far’

The U.K. actor is Middle-earth’s most badass dwarf and One to Watch in 2012. By Kevin P. Sullivan Richard Armitage in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Photo: New Line Productions This winter, director Peter Jackson will deliver the long-awaited return to Middle-earth. “The Hobbit,” which will unfold across two films, begins with “An Unexpected Journey,” as Bilbo Baggins leaves to win back gold stolen from his companions. But these are not just any friends. Bilbo is accompanied by 13 dwarves, each with a larger-than-life personality. The leader of these adventurers, Thorin, will be played by Richard Armitage , who made a brief appearance in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” but will get his biggest Stateside break in “The Hobbit.” The British actor played a key role in last month’s trailer and will soon join the illustrious ranks of Tolkien alumni, alongside Viggo Mortensen, Sean Bean and Orlando Bloom. We spoke with Armitage about traveling to Middle-earth, the difficulty of working under pounds of makeup and leading a band of treasure-seeking dwarves. MTV : Congratulations on being named to MTV’s Ones to Watch! Richard Armitage : Thank you very much! MTV : Where are you currently in the filming schedule? Armitage : We just finished up our second block, so we start again at the end of January, and then we go — we think it’s the end of July. Then there’s a bit more in 2013, we reckon. MTV : What’s it like being on a single project for so long? Armitage : It’s really weird because when we started it was just this enormous mountain to climb, but actually, it’s going so fast. I think we’ve gotten to the halfway point now. It’s been really intense but so exciting. We literally just finished our location shoot that we’ve been out on the road seeing most of New Zealand. It’s been the best thing I’ve ever worked on in my life, by far. MTV : Is it easy to forget you’re acting? Do you get lost in the world the production creates? Armitage : The soundstages they made in Wellington, [New Zealand], most of the time it doesn’t feel like we’ve been working on a set. Even when there’s a green screen there, Peter’s vision of it is so clear and his description of it is so clear. The pre-production CGI that they’ve already created really fires up your imagination. That was the shoot we started with. On location, it’s just theirs to program these amazing images into your head, so we can now take them back into the studio. MTV : Will it be hard to leave behind once you’ve wrapped? Armitage : It don’t think it will be possible to leave it behind me. I think this is one of those characters that always stay with you because you spend so much time with him and it’s such a transformation. I’m in the character every day, and I’ve become so familiar with him. I sort of know how he thinks. I feel really close to the character, and he will continue beyond this job , [ spoiler ahead ] even though, he dies at the end of the movie. I think he is a fascinating character. I will probably wake up in six years’ time and be inspired to think about him again. It’s really exciting. MTV : How did your previous knowledge of the story change how you approached Thorin? Armitage : I read it quite a few times when I was young. I think going back to it as an adult is really interesting because it is a book that was, I think, was written for Tolkien’s children, but when you’re creating a piece on this scale, you have to really visualize it for a much broader audience. I think that’s the beauty of Tolkien. He does create very well-rounded, quite dangerous characters to play his protagonists. He risks scaring kids. He’s the original fantasy creator, and I think you have to invest those characters with the same gravity as if you were making a piece for adults. It was interesting coming back to it as an adult, re-reading it again, because it did have a simplicity to it, which I really like. I felt we could take those characters and really develop them beyond the book. MTV : You ended up with middle ground in terms of the amount of makeup. Did you feel lucky? Armitage : It did evolve. We all started with quite an extreme version of ourselves. I think because my character does spend a lot of time onscreen and you really have to understand what he’s going through emotionally, it became clear that if we started make the prosthetic as close to my features as possible but still make him a dwarf, it would be much easier to read the character. He has to go on such a journey, it was really important to do that. I grew my own beard after the first block because I felt that it was restricting my face. The jaw is so connected to emotion that I wanted to have that free. It made such a huge difference. It’s really weird now because I can’t play the character when I haven’t gotten everything on. It’s very hard to rehearse when you’re not in costume, when you haven’t gotten the prosthetics on, but I look in the mirror when it’s all finished and I don’t see it. I can’t see where it starts and where it ends. I just see the character. I’ve never had that before. It’s such a unique experience. It’s a face that doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to WETA workshop and the people that created it. MTV : How was it on set with so many actors playing the dwarves? Armitage : I love it. I absolutely love working as an ensemble member, and we really are an ensemble. There’s great camaraderie among all the guys. There is such a diversity of culture and background. We’re working with a lot of Kiwis, and there’s real mixture of British actors who come from television and theater and film. It’s exactly as the dwarves are. When Thorin assembles the quest, he pulls dwarves from all different places to go on this quest. That’s mirrored in who we are as actors. What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It’s time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012 ! Jennifer Hudson: “I Did Not Turn Down ‘Precious’ Because Of Weight Gain”

Read this article:

Jennifer Hudson is backtracking on her recent explanation as to why she did not take the role in “Precious.” J Hud told TMZ that her weight was NOT a factor when she turned down the title role of “Precious.” She says she turned it down because she felt it was too graphic for her at that time. The Weight Watcher spokeswoman contradicts what she told “Dateline” in a recent interview that aired earlier this week, when Jennifer said she passed because, “I would have had to be the big girl again.” When Lester Holt asked if her decision to turn down “Precious” was motivated by fear of being typecast as a heavy actress … Hudson said, “I don’t like the idea of being boxed into anything.” So what’s the real story Jen?? Kim Kardashian Kampaigns for Lamar Odom, Is a Moron

The intern who writes Kim Kardashian’s blog Kim Kardashian is an idiot. In a new website post , the reality star asks her drones “dolls” to vote brother-in-law Lamar Odom into the All-Star Game this year. There are just two problems with this request: Odom is averaging a paltry 6.7 points and five rebounds per game this season, down from career numbers of 14.5 and 8.8, respectively. Someone might wanna tell Kim that Lamar no longer plays for the Lakers, following an immature trade demand because his feelings were hurt that Los Angeles wanted to upgrade its roster. Notice the photos Kim included with her plea: To vote Odom on to the All-Star roster would be an insult to professional basketball. It would take away a spot from a player who actually deserves it. Seriously, Kim, for someone who spends so much time underneath with athletes, we’d think you’d have more respect for the world of sports.

‘Caged’ Star Wes Reflects On Series Premiere

‘In a cage fight it’s only two people. You’ve just got to live with what happens,’ Wes tells MTV News. By Tami Katzoff Wes in the series premiere of “Caged” Photo: MTV MTV’s new docu-series “Caged” premiered Monday night, and after seeing it, the first reaction of castmember Wes had little to do with his performance in the cage. “Damn, I was fat and out of shape,” the amateur mixed martial arts fighter told MTV News via Skype. “I guess because I hadn’t trained and fought in so long [before] the first episode, and then me getting back into it I was just like, wow, I didn’t really realize how big I was, and then the camera, it adds, like, 10 pounds.” “Caged” follows Wes and two fellow cage fighters, Daniel and Danger, as they try to better their lives in their small town of Minden, Louisiana. A revealing (and somewhat revolting) subplot in the premiere involved Wes trying to cut weight before a fight. He needed to shed several pounds in a short period of time. “We don’t have a sauna to go to in Minden, and I had three or four hours to make weight. And if you don’t make weight, you don’t fight,” Wes said. He decided to use the brutal Louisiana heat to his advantage. “I was like, the inside of my car’s leather, it will be like a sauna in there. So we get our sauna suit and I get in there and I’m just like, ‘Oh my God, I’m dying.’ You do what you got to do, I guess,” Wes said. The episode’s climax, fittingly, was the big night during which Wes, Danger and Daniel all had fights. Wes recalled that the time leading up to him stepping into the cage was filled with his usual pre-fight jitters. “Can you just imagine being somewhere, and then a guy comes running up at you and he’s like, ‘I’m about to fight you right now.’ And you take that little split second that you’re so scared, and then magnify it times a hundred and then stretch it out for about two weeks long,” he said. “Because two weeks before a fight you’re like, ‘Oh, sh–, I’ve got to fight a guy in a cage. And he’s going to try to kick me in the face, and he’s going to try to hurt me.'” During the final moments before the fight, the second-guessing comes. “You’re just sitting there and you’re waiting on them to call your name. You’re just like, ‘What am I doing here? I just want the electricity to go out, or some kind of natural disaster to happen so I don’t have to fight,’ ” Wes said. “And then they start playing your walk out music and you’re just like, ‘OK, this is what I’m here for, this is why I do this. I love this.’ And you go out there and it’s such an adrenaline rush, you really can’t explain it. It just takes over your body.” After Wes won his fight, he watched Daniel struggle in the cage. “Daniel, I’ve known him for a long time,” Wes said. “He’s unsociable and he looks like Justin Bieber, but he’s a cool cat.” It was clear that Daniel was having trouble. “I’m stressed out watching him,” Wes recalled. “And then he gets hit and I’m just like, ‘Oh my God.’ ” Daniel was down, and all Wes could do was watch. “You can’t do anything because in a cage fight it’s only two people,” he said. “You’ve just got to live with what happens.” Did you catch the premiere of “Caged”?
