Christopher Nolan Unveils ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Prologue

A lucky audience got a glimpse at director’s nearly seven-minute clip, in which Bane proves as fearsome as Batman fans have hoped. By Kara Warner “The Dark Knight Rises” movie poster Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures LOS ANGELES — If you happened to be in or around the IMAX theater at Universal City Walk Thursday night, there’s a decent chance you may have been privy to the collective fangasm (some shock and awe) generated by the lucky audience invited to screen the prologue for Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises.” Nolan was on hand himself to introduce the nearly seven-minute clip, which he described as, basically, the opening sequence, with a few out-of-order bonus shots thrown in at the end. The director also emphasized his love for IMAX technology, explaining that even though it was probably developed before he was born, it is “far and away the best imaging format created,” and it’s one that allows fans to experience the grandeur of old Hollywood films, which Nolan said is “slowly being chipped away.” At the special screening, he encouraged fans to seek out official IMAX screens for a fully immersive experience when “Rises” opens next summer, but not to inquire about the plot of the film. “I’ve barely started to edit, so don’t ask me about the ending,” he joked just before the lights in the theater dimmed. In the interest of preserving the mystery of the movie, Warner Bros. politely asked journalists in attendance to refrain from giving blow-by-blow reactions, a request MTV News is happy to heed. What we can say is that the action in the opening sequence occurs mostly on a plane and that it features several high-flying, mind-blowing special effects of the practical, not the CG, variety. The sequence seems to pick up right where “The Dark Knight” leaves off — Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent’s funeral — and, most important, features one of the more memorable character introductions we’ve seen of late as viewers got the first look at Tom Hardy in action as Bane, complete with creepy leather face mask. There are government agents, military personnel and civilians involved in the setup, but it’s all eyes on Bane. And if what we see him say and do in the first few minutes is representative of his villainous arc in the full-length feature, it’s clear that Nolan is venturing into more ominous territory in “Rises.” Where Heath Ledger’s unforgettable Joker was dark, twisted and almost whimsically crazy, Hardy’s Bane is a horrific, maniacal force. That’s apparent whenever the camera locks onto his eyes or when he speaks for the first time, revealing a garbled, aggressive German accent. Bane will no doubt prove a formidable force to be reckoned with, and we can’t help but anticipate his first meeting with Batman. Speaking of Batman, the caped crusader, played of course by Christian Bale, makes his first appearance in a few quick clips at the very end, along with new additions Catwoman/Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) and cop John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Snooki Sneaks Into Our Top 10 TV Characters Of 2011

‘Parks and Recreation’ antihero Ron Swanson lands at #1, with ‘Breaking Bad’ meth cook Walter and the ‘Jersey Shore’ guidette behind him. By MTV News staff Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi in “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV It’s all come down to this: Only 10 remain in our countdown of the Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, and the results might surprise you. It goes without saying that one of our favorite “Jersey Shore” stars found her way toward the top of our list, but it’s a certain “Parks and Rec” administrator who took home all the bacon (and all the eggs while he was at it). Combine those characters with two nods for “Breaking Bad,” an Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” actor and one comedian who risked his very life to bring some of the biggest laughs the small screen has ever enjoyed, and you’ll find yourself looking at our Top 10 TV Characters of 2011. Stay tuned to MTV News for interviews with several of our top honorees. See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 50 to 41, including a masked bachelor and dashing novelist/crime-fighter. 10. Gus Fring, “Breaking Bad” I’ve never smoked meth, but my guess is the effects are similar to the feeling shooting through my body when the crank kingpin — SPOILER ALERT! — exited the smoky scene of a suicide bombing, straightened his tie and revealed that in place of his face was a steaming mass of Fring-like goo. He was in death as he was in life: debonair, a spiller of blood and totally goddamn frightening. Contemplating a “Breaking Bad” without Gus makes us want to reach for the pipe. -Eric Ditzian 9. Constance Langdon, “American Horror Story” Both television and the horror genre are no strangers to terrible mothers, but Jessica Lange’s deliciously dark Constance on “American Horror Story” truly takes the cake. How many moms have you known to allow their children to die in a house that keeps the dead’s spirits locked in our mortal realm for all eternity? The two-time Oscar winner marks her first regular television gig with “AHS,” and it’s a phenomenal debut. As awful as Constance can be, as mean and nasty as she gets, she’s impossible to look away from. And, so help us, you actually feel bad for this woman and her cursed womb. Only an actress of Lange’s caliber could make the ruthless Constance into someone you can root for despite yourself — and with only one season under her belt, we can only imagine the “Horror” Lange will bring in the future. -Josh Wigler 8. Fat Mac, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Remember Robert De Niro’s turn in “Raging Bull,” when he gained 60 pounds to play Jake La Motta? Of course you don’t; there weren’t any sparkling vampires in “Raging Bull.” Long story short, De Niro packed on the lb’s and subsequently won every award on the planet. Rob McElhenney, on the other hand, added a solid 50 pounds of fat to play Mac on the current season of “Sunny,” and he’ll be lucky to be nominated for a Blockbuster Entertainment Award. So let’s honor him here — not only for ruining his body for the sake of comedy, but for spoiling one of TV’s oldest tropes: As shows go on, characters don’t age, they get better looking. On the seventh season of “Sunny,” Mac looks worse than ever, yet his best moments — carrying around a trash bag filled with chimichangas, insisting he’s just “cultivating mass” — steal the show. Whether it’s method acting or some sociological experiment, you’ve got to appreciate McElhenney’s willingness to bust boundaries — and waistbands. -James Montgomery See our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 40 to 31, including a “hootie hoo!”-hollering chef and funnyman talk-show host. 7. Milania Giudice, “Real Housewives of New Jersey “You have such muscular legs when you do gymnastics, sometimes you gotta rest your toes,” Gia sang to little sister Milania — both daughters of “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice — on her fifth birthday. The song is irrelevant to all the adorable little Milania represents, but I just love that line. Milania remained blissfully unaware of the drama her mother and castmates stirred up on “RHONJ” and instead delivered such irreverent pearls as “give me pizza, you old troll” to her father and climbed onto couches, into supermarket freezer displays and, most importantly, into our hearts. -Rya Backer 6. Phil Dunphy, “Modern Family” In the sea of characters on “Modern Family,” the biggest one of all just might be Phil Dunphy, played by Emmy winner Ty Burrell . Prime time’s most well-meaning husband, dad and son-in-law, Phil lives his life with his own joie de vivre, blind to the fact that sometimes (when he lets his feet get off the ground) he borders on the ridiculous. He’s over-the-top and underappreciated, but at the end of the day, it’s his love for life, shenanigans and family that keeps audiences, and the Dunphy clan, coming back for more. -Jocelyn Vena 5. Eric Northman, “True Blood” There are plenty of badass bloodsuckers littering vampire canon, so what makes Eric Northman (played by Alexander Skarsg

Jay-Z Hints At Solo, Kanye And Throne Albums In 2012

‘We’re really in a great place creatively,’ he tells MTV News of three possible projects. By Rob Markman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Are you ready to Watch the Throne again? With Jay-Z and Kanye West still riding high off the success of their summer masterpiece, the duo just may get back in the studio and give fans another dose, Hov revealed to MTV News. “It depends on how this thing finishes up,” Jay said in reference to his and Kanye’s current Watch the Throne Tour. “We — I say ‘we’ because I’m in Throne mode — we’re in a great place creatively. You might see a Jay, then Kanye and a Throne album next year. You know, we’re really in a great place creatively. We really found our zone.” Back in July, during an intimate listening session for the then-unreleased WTT, Jay revealed to a room of reporters that he had two songs already recorded for his yet-untitled 11th solo album but hasn’t talked about it very much since. It’s been two years since Jigga dropped his last LP, The Blueprint 3. Kanye, on the other hand, released his last solo album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, in 2010. It was both a commercial and critical success, but was noticeably absent from the Album of the Year category when Grammy nominations were announced last month. During a December 1 Throne concert in his hometown of Chicago, Yeezy addressed the snub , surprisingly blaming himself for releasing Fantasy and Watch the Throne in the same year. “Don’t worry, because me and Hov are gonna keep on making sh–,” he told the crowd. Jay, who on Thursday announced a pair of charity concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall , didn’t give official word about when fans can expect any of the three projects, but he is definitely in his zone! Zac Efron, Jessica Biel, More Hit ‘New Year’s Eve’ Debut

‘You’re hungry, you’re like, ‘My back’s sore,’ ‘ Biel jokes to MTV News of symptoms of wearing a baby bump in Gary Marshall flick. By Christina Garibaldi Zac Efron Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, the cast of “New Year’s Eve,” Gary Marshall’s latest ensemble flick, gathered at New York City’s Ziegfeld Theatre for a Tribeca Film Institute benefit in celebration of the star-studded film’s release. The follow-up to the director’s box-office hit “Valentine’s Day” has a similar theme: multiple plotlines told in a series of vignettes. MTV News hit the black carpet, where we caught up with castmembers, including Zac Efron, who revealed to us that veteran actress Michelle Pfeiffer had a lot to do with convincing him to take on the part. “It was great,” Efron told MTV News of working with Pfeiffer. “I remember the first time I met her was on ‘Hairspray,’ and she’s Michelle Pfeiffer — she had that aura, star aura — so I was always very nervous around her; [she’s] very beautiful. “We never really got the chance to connect on that movie,” he explained of the 2007 musical. “So on this film, I remember I got a voicemail from her, and she said, ‘Look, I would love to do this if you want to do it, and I want to take it to the next level.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m in 1,000 percent, and I love you so much, thank you so much for that voicemail. I can’t wait, let’s do it!’ And here we are. It was a dream come true.” And Marshall seems to have made another dream come true for young actor Jake T. Austin, who has his first big-screen kiss in the flick with co-star Abigail Breslin. “We met each other hours before,” Austin told us. “It was more like, ‘Hi, nice to meet you, you ready?’ But it was not that awkward, it was cool.” “It wasn’t that awkward because we kinda didn’t treat it like a big deal,” Breslin added. “He was very sweet, he was a gentleman. It all went well. We just kinda treated it like it was no big deal.” Jessica Biel also hit the black carpet in a stunning, shimmery Valentino gown, a far different look than what she sports in the movie. “I actually kind of enjoyed it,” Biel said of wearing a baby bump for her pregnant character. “It was a strange thing. I didn’t think I was going to feel as comfortable as I did with it. When you put that thing on, you start to rock with it: You’re rubbing it. You’re like, ‘Wow this is not so bad after all.’ You’re hungry, you’re like, ‘My back’s sore’ — no, its not, you’re faking it — but you still feel that these symptoms are happening to you, it just felt really natural.” Will you see “New Year’s Eve”? Jay-Z Marvels At Playing Carnegie Hall Charity Shows

‘Any time I get a chance to expand and broaden the reach of hip-hop is a great thing,’ Jay says of February 6 and 7 shows. By Rob Markman Jay-Z attends the United Way Of New York & Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation Press Conference on Thursday Photo: Ilya S. Savenok/ FilmMagic First he went from Marcy to Madison Square; now Jay-Z is going from Crooklyn to Carnegie Hall. On February 6 and 7, Hov will play the famed Carnegie Hall — and it’s all for a great cause. “Any time I get a chance to expand and broaden the reach of hip-hop is a great thing for me on a personal level,” Jay said after announcing the shows Thursday (December 8). “When we were looking at hip-hop, we were just happy to play club dates,” Jay told MTV News. “And then Run-DMC started doing arenas, and you’re like, ‘Man, this is possible,’ and it just keeps going further and further.” With the pair of shows — which will be held at Carnegie’s Stern Auditorium — Jay aims to raise millions of dollars for the United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation in an effort to put low-income NYC students in a position to attend college. Shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, Hov — as well as top brass from Carnegie Hall, the United Way and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation — gathered in Carnegie to announce the concert and talk about their fundraising efforts. Tickets for the dates will be sold privately and priced at a premium rate, fetching anywhere from $500 to $2,500 to raise a significant pot of money for the charity. Regular fans aren’t completely shut out, though. On January 30, a number of reasonably priced tickets will go on sale to the public. The publicly sold seats are being released so close to the concert date in hopes of curtailing scalping. After the press conference, Jigga sat down with MTV News to explain his motivation. “We’re not just doing a show for the sake of it,” Hov said. “For all these years, [the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation has] been really grassroots. My mom has been getting on the bus herself and taking kids to orientation and doing this work by herself. Now … we’re building this thing out.” Jay hasn’t determined how his Carnegie set will look, if he will bring out any guests during his shows or how many times he will perform “N—as in Paris,” but all those questions will be eventually be answered. “We have to do a rendition of ‘N—as in Paris’ in Carnegie Hall; it just has to go down,” Jay said, laughing after being posed the question. “I ain’t think about that. That’ll be great.” Related Photos Kanye, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj Let Loose At 2011 Victoria’s Secret Show Related Artists Jay-Z

Lindsay Lohan’s Playboy Cover Leaks

Actress was set to debut the cover of January/February issue on ‘Ellen’ next week. By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan Photo: Toby Canham/Getty Images Just a month after posing for Playboy, Lindsay Lohan’s cover has hit the Net. On the cover, posted by “The Insider,” Lohan appears fully nude in front of a red backdrop, her assets strategically covered by a chair in the shape of the magazine’s iconic bunny ears, leaving mostly everything to the imagination. The cover is definitely a throwback to the vintage shoots from the magazine’s early days. Photos: The highs and lows of Lindsay Lohan. Lohan, who faced a number of legal battles this year, will sit down with Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show December 15 to open up about the headline-making photo shoot for the January/February issue. According to the magazine rep, the “Ellen” stop is the only interview Lohan will give to promote the issue. During her chat, she will reveal another image from the magazine. She was originally slated to debut the cover on the show as well before it leaked online. In an interview with “The Insider” in November, Lindsay’s mom, Dina, opened up about her daughter’s decision to pose for the magazine. “It will be tastefully done,” Dina explained. “She’s been working in front of the camera with Ford Models since she was a little girl, so she kinda knows how to work that.” E! News reported at the time of the November photo shoot that Lohan had to pose a second time for the magazine after her first shoot didn’t get the seal of approval from Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. The source added that while the photos needed to be reshot, Lohan would be keeping one thing the same: She wouldn’t appear fully nude in the issue. A rep for the magazine had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment about the leaked cover by press time. Related Photos The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan
