‘I didn’t know what I was doing,’ she says of first foray into acting. But in “Battleship,” her fatigues are anything but high-end. In a chat with UGO.com , the singer opens up about her butt-kicking role as Raikes, saying that her character knows nothing about the glamorous things in life, only the dangerous things. “It’s really cool, it’s easy. You don’t have to think about what you want to put on, or how cute you look,” she says of wearing the uniform in the Peter Berg-directed action flick. “She doesn’t like boys. She doesn’t like girls either. She’s just about her weapons and her work.” Rihanna has always had a tough-girl persona, so when it came time to make her film debut, she knew that this girl was the right one to play. And she made sure she did her research. “We worked with real military people, you know, people in the Navy, people who have fought in Iraq before. They pretty much came and drilled me. This one man, Donald, he pretty much drilled me, yelled at me, cursed me, ‘Ow!’ Made me do pushups. Everything,” she recalled. “Like, my best friend was there the second time we worked together, and I said to her, ‘OK, I’m about to do acting class, but you’re going to want to kill this man, so just stay in the bedroom. Don’t listen to anything he’s saying to me right now, just don’t kill him, Melissa, just stay in the bedroom.’ “And I remember she just kept walking around, and she would just glance at me, ‘Are you OK? Did he just say ‘f— you’ to you?’ But I mean, it really got you in the mentality, that’s the things they really go through, you know, when they first sign up,” she continued. “It’s not a walk in the park.” Her first encounter with Berg was equally jarring — Rihanna describes the sequence of events as “weird.” “And [Peter Berg] just walked out and said, ‘Hi, come in,’ and I’m like, ‘Where is Christa, my manager? Where is my manager?’ She wasn’t there, and I walked in and all I saw were these little alien mock-ups, these little dolls. And he just started saying, ‘Yeah, these are the thugs, he’s a thug,’ ” she said of the meeting. “I laughed and then I realized that he wasn’t laughing, and I was like, ‘This is weird. A four-man collective that should be in the discussion is Slaughterhouse, consisting of Crooked I, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and recent MTV “RapFix Live” guest Royce Da 5’9″ . Royce revealed on RapFix that the next Slaughterhouse album — their eponymous debut dropped in 2009 — may arrive by year’s end. “Very soon, very soon,” Royce said when asked about the next Slaughterhouse project’s status. “We’re working on the project right now. We’re actually going to Atlanta on Thursday [August 11]. All the guys, we’re all getting together and going in with some heavy-hitting producers. Hopefully, we’ll have a single out by the end of the year, if not the album.” At the top of the year, the supergroup of veteran MCs signed a recording deal with Eminem’s Shady Records . Four distinct personalities and voices could mean inevitable dissension, but Nickel Nine insists that is far from the case. He detailed how one particular difference of opinion among the group was mediated. “Never that,” Royce said. “The last discussion we had where people didn’t agree — it wasn’t an argument, but it was just us talking — was where we were going to record at because the last two times was in Detroit. I never want to make them feel like they have to come to Detroit just because me and Marshall [Eminem] are there. So I’m always willing to compromise in that way. Crooked wanted to go and take advantage of having Marshall in our corner. Joey wanted a change of environment — he wants to go to Atlanta. Joell was just in the middle. That’s what happens when you have four different people. We just got on the phone and it ended up being Atlanta. We take votes, we do everything fair.” Finally, Royce assured fans that new music is definitely on the way, saying, “It’ll at least be a single, I guarantee you that,” by December. “Because we got one right now that I think can go. MTV News crashed Jay-Z and Kanye’s pop-up store in NYC to speak to Throne fans. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImageGetty Images/ NEW YORK — “We were at our office and one of my colleagues said, ‘I just saw on Twitter that there is a new pop-up shop that’s selling Watch the Throne, ” said a man identified only by his Twitter handle @hiprobbie. “So we ran down here to check it out.” And just like that, fans scurried down to 201 Mulberry Street, in the SoHo section of Manhattan, to celebrate the physical retail release of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s combo album . Things started off slowly at first. MTV News was on the scene at approximately 11:30 a.m. ET and the storefront, which was wrapped in a gold Riccardo Tisci-designed print, was barren out front. It wasn’t until noon, when MTV broke the news and folks from Kanye’s camp began to tweet about the surprise retail space, that fans started to show up. At about 1 p.m. ET, fans were let in to the surprise store, where the Throne album was sold and the album’s art was displayed. The biggest attraction: the chopped-and-screwed Maybach from Hov and Yeezy’s “Otis” video , which premiered on MTV on Thursday. “That’s the first thing you see when you get in the store is the Maybach, and it’s all tore up,” hip-hop fan Max Lockie said. “The engine’s exposed, the doors are ripped off, the trunk’s split open so you can see the inside of it.” Dorian Talker was equally excited to see the tricked-out whip, which will eventually be auctioned off for charity, though he did express just a bit of disappointment. “I would’ve liked it better if Jay-Z and Kanye had been in the car, but, you know, you get what you get,” he said. See what car expert Myles Kovacs estimates the Maybach’s work cost. The pop-up store caps off an exciting week in which fans waited until Monday’s early morning hours to purchase the album on iTunes. Then on Thursday, Throne fanatics got to see WTT first visual component when the “Otis” video debuted. On Friday, folks were still buzzing. “It was dope. What I liked about the video most was it seemed like they were having a good time,” Jonas Guerrero said. “They were stuntin’ on a whole ‘nother level. Queen Latifah has been tapped to show off her dancing skills in “Dancing With The Stars.” According to TMZ, Queen Latifah and “Jersey Shore” cast member Snooki have signed on to do the next season of “Dancing With The Stars.” Producers for the franchise said they wanted to upgrade the contestants for the new season, which begins next month. When I first thought of ‘going natural’ in January 2011, I quickly decided against it; I opted to continue my regular relaxer regimen. After all, it worked for ten years. But during my past three years in college, I have found it difficult, frustrating and nearly impossible to grow and maintain a healthy head of relaxed hair. I did my research by reading natural hair blogs and watching lots of natural hair videos on YouTube. The women on these websites were quite knowledgeable and encouraging; I felt I was finally ready to embark on my natural hair journey. Although initially, I thought I couldn’t bare to cut all of my relaxed hair off, managing my two hair textures (new growth and relaxed ends) proved too aggravating!
