By Kara Warner Amy Winehouse Photo: Vince Bucci/ Getty Images SAN DIEGO — The news of Amy Winehouse’s tragic death continued to shock the world Saturday (July 23), with many of the 27-year-old’s celebrity fans taking to Twitter and Facebook to express their sadness in learning of the troubled singer’s passing. “Glee” cast members Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz, Harry Shum Jr. and Dot Marie Jones joined in the thousands of Winehouse mourners devastated by the loss. “She’s paved the way for so many artists, so at least every artist can pay homage to her in some way,” Ushkowitz told MTV News at Comic-Con 2011 . “Hopefully they will,” she said, adding, “It’s just so tragic: She was so young and so talented.” Criss said, “She definitely brought back a lot of soul to mainstream, and it’s really unfortunate to see her go, but I think she’ll live on in other artists who will follow [with] the same soul.” Shum Jr. added, “She had a voice that couldn’t be duplicated. It’s a tragedy.” Marie Jones said she hopes more attention is paid to Winehouse’s legacy as an artist than to her personal struggles. “I hope everybody focuses on what she did and did so well and not the tragedy,” she said. “God bless her and her family. She did so much.” “In a short period of time,” Shum Jr. added. “[At age] 27, it’s really sad,” Marie Jones concluded. Though some news outlets are reporting a drug overdose as the suspected cause of Winehouse’s death, autopsy reports aren’t scheduled to be released until Sunday. May she finally find peace.” Nicki Minaj, who is also on the road as part of Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale jaunt, took to Twitter and expressed disbelief at the news of Winehouse’s passing. “Please tell me Amy Winehouse didn’t die,” wrote the Young Money MC, who’s set to hit the stage in Florida on Saturday. “Is this some sick joke?” “I am genuinely heartbroken about this,” wrote Rihanna , who continued to express her shock over multiple tweets on Saturday (July 23). “Dear God have mercy!!! At Comic-Con 2011, ‘Twilight’ star also discusses imprinting scene. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News SAN DIEGO — This year’s San Diego Comic-Con has been akin to celebrating Christmas in July for “Twilight” fans. Those lucky enough to catch the highly anticipated “Breaking Dawn” panel Thursday were treated to roughly seven minutes of footage, as well as the appearance of all of their favorite cast members. MTV News chatted with Taylor Lautner briefly about the Comic-Con experience, as well as how he approached the much-discussed imprinting scene . “It’s tough. I think the best way is to just go off the book,” Lautner said. “People ask me questions all the time about imprinting, and I just want to say, ‘Read the book: It explains it all.’ It’s very complicated,” he added. “I can’t wait for everyone to see it. I think they’ll be pleased.” Lautner also continued to heap praise on his young co-star Mackenzie Foy, who plays Edward and Bella’s daughter, Renesmee. “The great thing with Mackenzie is she is the nicest girl,” he said. “She’s so outgoing. Everybody on that set loved her. She’s really talented. I can’t wait for everyone to see her; she’s not until the second one, though,” he pointed out. In regard to which scene he’s most looking forward to seeing in the finished film, Lautner echoed the sentiments of plenty of fans before him. “I’m excited to see the honeymoon stuff — come on,” he said with a smile. “There’s a lot of good stuff.” He added, “I’m super proud of the movie. I think everybody’s really happy with it. Andrew Garfield describes ‘surreal’ moment: ‘I felt like I was Spider-Man,’ he tells MTV News. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spiderman” Photo: Sony Pictures SAN DIEGO — “The Amazing Spider-Man” swung into San Diego Comic-Con on Friday (July 22), and star Andrew Garfield made sure he came ready to talk about the comic book influences he drew from for his performance. Part of what makes Garfield so endearing in the role is his passion for the character of Spider-Man and his love of the comic books. When he chatted with MTV News, he showed off his nerd cred by dropping comic book names when describing the suit and physicality he used for Peter Parker. “The body time in the Ultimates is what I loved,” he explained. “Because I’m skinny, if you hadn’t noticed; I’m a skinny guy. I love the idea of a skinny guy beating the crap out of big guys just as a personal fantasy fulfillment.” But there was more to his performance than that. Garfield made sure he was very specific with his body movements and his physical appearance because he wanted to make a point of bringing more to the evolution of Peter Parker to Spider-Man than the previous films did. “One of the elements that I was interested in was doing something with his physicality,” Garfield said. “I wanted it to be like the venom, the spider bite, was doing something specific to his DNA … In life, imagine like he has more arms than he does, more legs than he does, and more of a special awareness.” Fans have finally had a chance to take a look at “The Amazing Spider-Man” thanks to a trailer that debuted earlier this week. But, as a huge fan himself, Garfield had a bit of a difficult time rationalizing to himself that he was actually Spider-Man. Garfield said there was only one moment in which he felt like he was Spider-Man instead of going through some strange out-of-body experience that wasn’t really happening. “I was in a changing room on my own, and I could be honest with myself. I was really moved by it because no one else was around,” Garfield said. “It was genuinely very, very emotional, and it felt surreal. Director Bill Condon tells Comic-Con crowd that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson’s real-life growth parallels Bella and Edward. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn” Photo: Summit SAN DIEGO — Bill Condon was tasked with the difficult job of wrapping up the final two installments of “The Twilight Saga.” But judging by the glowing response to two brand-new “Breaking Dawn” clips at San Diego Comic-Con , so far it seems safe to bet he’s done a great job. But for the director, the task was as much about creating a finale that will please fans as it was making something that he could be proud of. During Thursday afternoon’s (July 21) “Breaking Dawn” panel in the Convention Center’s Hall H, Condon called the event “the most incredible test screening I will ever have,” because it was the first time he would be hearing fans’ reactions to part one of the last two “Twilight” movies. “It’s amazing in this movie how much happens,” Condon told the Comic-Con audience. “Bella’s getting married or Bella’s going to make love for the first time. People have been waiting for these moments, and everyone’s imagined them, so you do want to get to the essence of what people might want but you can only do it the way, ultimately, you think is the most beautiful or the most powerful.” “Twilight” fans’ possible reactions to a few scenes in particular have Condon feeling nervous, he admitted. “There are big scenes — the childbirth — that you just want to make sure that it’s as powerful and as complete as it could be,” he said. It helps that his two stars, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, have come into their own as actors over the course of the movies. Condon called Stewart “the real deal,” while revealing that Pattinson was able to bring “more of himself” to the role of Edward Cullen in “Breaking Dawn” then he had in the previous installments. “They’re growing up. There was a year gap between the making of this movie and the last one, [‘Eclipse’], so they’re just a lot more comfortable in themselves,” Condon explained. “I keep saying it’s like ‘Twilight Grows Up.’ It’s adult concerns: they’re married now, it’s like they’re going to have a kid, it’s that kind of stuff. ‘For those who have been so involved and grown up with the series, it feels like a chapter of your life has closed,’ one expert says. Pictures “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” has been in theaters for a week, kicking magical tail at the box office and basking in the glow of rave reviews from critics. All good things, to be sure, except for one not-so-tiny wound: “Harry Potter” is officially over. “Wait … there’s no ‘Part 3’?” joked a wistful Micah Tannenbaum of MuggleNet , commenting to MTV News on the fact that the “Potter” series is finally ending. “It’s a bittersweet feeling. For those who have been so involved and grown up with the series, it feels like a chapter of your life has closed, but at the same time, you’re eager to see what’s next. J.K. Rowling always has something up her sleeve.” MTV’s very own “Potter” expert Terri Schwartz, who was one of our main commentators during the “Harry Potter” World Cup , is one such reader to have grown up alongside the Boy Who Lived, giving her a unique perspective on the cinematic ending of Jo Rowling’s magical franchise. “It is fair to say that I grew up with ‘Harry Potter,’ so now that the movie series is over, there is an overriding sense of finality to the era that wasn’t there when the last book came out,” she said. “I definitely feel like I will never experience another pop-culture phenomenon quite like this again in my lifetime.” Indeed, it’s a popular sentiment. For many fans, the end of “Potter” marks not just the end of a franchise, but the completion of a massive zeitgeist-defining tale the likes of which won’t be repeated anytime soon. There’s a sense of pride among “Potter” fans for having been around to witness such a narrative gift, but it doesn’t come without a bittersweet cost. “I think the fans are experiencing mixed emotions,” Tannenbaum said. “It’s a bit different than when ‘Deathly Hallows’ the book was released in 2007, because you still had several movies to look forward to. Now what?” Thankfully, there is a place to turn: Pottermore , Ms. Rowling’s online haven where muggles across the world can rediscover the majesty of “Potter” all over again. “It’s a good thing [she] decided to announce Pottermore just before the last film hit theaters,” Tannenbaum said. “I have a feeling it will cure any lingering post-Potter depression and provide fans the ultimate online experience. With all the books being re-released over time with new content, fans can experience the series all over again.” Pottermore is still several months away, of course, but fans aren’t without options: “Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ is still in theaters, of course, and judging by last weekend’s record-breaking box-office numbers, it’s a sure bet that many Potterheads will be heading back to Hogwarts this weekend. ” ‘Part 2’ is definitely the strongest of the ‘Potter’ films, so it is exciting to see that this last movie is holding steady to be the strongest of the bunch,” Schwartz said. “It just solidifies the fact that this is the most successful movie franchise in cinematic history, which is a title it well-deserves.” “The box-office results are impressive,” Tannenbaum added. “I think the fact that ‘Part 2′ shattered midnight, opening-day and opening-weekend records here in the U.S. as well as records overseas shows the series’ reach. It’s the fastest film ever to the half-billion mark, and it has only been in theaters for a week! Plus, it just passed ‘Star Wars’ as the highest-grossing franchise of all-time. We’ve been following ‘The First Avenger’ since it was first announced. By Ryan J. Downey Chris Evans in “Captain America: The First Avenger” Photo: Paramount Pictures Captain America will finally throw his mighty shield on the big screen this weekend. And while Cap’s journey from the comics to the megaplex wasn’t quite as arduous as the hero’s transition from World War II to present day (which involved being frozen in a block of ice), there were plenty of twists and turns before Chris Evans put on the costume that will allow him to lead the Avengers. A “Captain America” movie actually appeared back in 1990, but to call it a “B-movie” would be generous. Albert Pyun, the director responsible for action romps like Jean Claude Van Damme’s “Cyborg,” cast actor Matt Salinger in the title role and took several liberties with established continuity. Cap was still named Steve Rogers, still given his abilities by a “super soldier serum” during World War II and still frozen in a block of ice, however, his arch-nemesis switched from German to Italian. This summer’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” returns the Red Skull to his nefarious Nazi origins. Hugo Weaving plays the megalomaniacal fellow experimental “super soldier” who leads Hitler’s deep science division, HYDRA, which eventually breaks away from the Nazis due to the Skull’s world-domination plans. Steve Rogers is a Brooklyn kid whose scrawny size and poor health cause him to be rejected continually as he tries to enlist for the war effort. A professor’s serum gives him a muscular body and super-strength. Thanks to technology, Evans portrays both versions of the character. Jon Favreau considered directing “Captain America” before ultimately choosing “Iron Man” instead. That film’s success established Marvel as a Hollywood studio in its own right (with distribution help, of course), following previous Marvel character flicks like “X-Men,” “Spider-Man” and “Daredevil,” which were handled by other studios. Marvel decided to mix heroes onscreen as they always have in print (at least the ones they still own the rights to) with next summer’s “Avengers” movie building on “Easter eggs” and story connections established across multiple films, like “Cap.” “The Incredible Hulk” director Louis Leterrier was considered for a time before the job ultimately went to Joe Johnston , who had proven his hero prowess and period-movie gloss with “The Rocketeer.” Garrett Hedlund (“Tron: Legacy”), John Krasinski (“The Office'”) and Mike Vogel (“Cloverfield”) were among the actors reportedly considered for the title role. Sebastian Stan (“Gossip Girl”) was considered as well before ultimately being cast as Captain America’s sidekick, “Bucky” Barnes. Chris Evans actually turned the role down . He had played a Marvel hero before, appearing as the Human Torch in two “Fantastic Four” films. Evans and Weaving were the first cast announcements. “I got a call, and they said they want me to audition, and I said, ‘Great!’ And then I thought about it and I said, ‘No thanks,’ ” Evans told MTV News. “And then they called back and they said, ‘Well, they want you to test,’ and testing is basically they’ll draw up a contract, and if you’re testing then you’re only testing with a couple other guys and the odds of walking away with it drastically increase. And again I just said, ‘I think I’m good. This isn’t really what I’m looking for.’ “It just seemed like the more I walked away, the more they pursued,” he explained. At Comic-Con last year, where he appeared onstage with the rest of the Avengers, Evans told us about all the research he did to bone up on Captain America lore after he accepted the role. “Personally, when I was going through the comic books, the ones that were most intriguing were the origin stories. I just wanted to get as many different takes on how this guy started out.” Fans were thrilled to learn more information about the Captain America movie as it trickled out online: The Howling Commandos would appear; the Cosmic Cube figured into the story; Tony “Iron Man” Stark’s father, Howard Stark, would be a central supporting character, and so forth. But as it turned out, Evans was still questioning his decision to play the role even at Comic-Con. “I remember the first time I went to a fitting and I put on the suit, and I just was so terrified, so focused on the negatives, still,” he told us a few months later. “I bet when I was at that Comic-Con, I was probably still terrified, probably still apprehensive about whether or not this was right. “I can’t believe I almost didn’t do it!” he told us emphatically. “For better or worse, no matter what happens with the film, whether it’s a good film or not, it was the right thing to do and I’m glad I did it.” Audiences will have a chance to make up their own minds about “Captain America: The First Avenger” this weekend. Critics have been positive thus far. At press time, the film stood at 73 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which collects reviews from major critics. “It’s paced and designed for people who won’t shrivel up and die if two or three characters take 45 seconds between combat sequences to have a conversation about world domination, or a dame,” wrote The Chicago Tribune. Rolling Stone praised the film’s star in particular. “Evans, who played the Human Torch in two less-than-fantastic Fantastic Four films, brings such humor, heart and vigor to virtuous Steve that our rooting interest holds even when the action gets to be standard-issue,” Peter Travers wrote. ‘I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up,’ he jokes to MTV News. Every time the subject comes up, he starts running his fingers through his hair and making jokes at his own expense. At the “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” press conference before the film’s San Diego Comic-Con panel on Thursday (July 21), Pattinson was asked what scene gave him the most anxiety during the “Dawn” shoot. Pattinson was forced to endure a double-dose of nerves in talking about himself and having to address the amount of shirtlessness fans will see in the film. “The thing I was most nervous about was taking my shirt off,” Pattinson admitted. “At least he’s honest!” Kristen Stewart chimed in. “That’s cool.” Pattinson went on to say that even though the Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer’s books is frequently without a shirt, he kept trying to keep himself clothed in the films. “I’ve managed to have my shirt on the whole series,” he said. “In the book, [Edward is shirtless] almost every three pages. [I kept thinking,] ‘How can I wear a T-shirt in the sea? Producer Verse Simmonds opens up to MTV News about WTT track ‘Who Gon Stop Me.’ By Rob Markman Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Jay-Z and Kanye West ‘s collaborative Watch the Throne LP is shaping up to be the year’s most anticipated release. So far, fans have heard the Southern-fried, Lex Luger-produced “H.A.M.” and the soul-drenched “Otis,” which premiered Wednesday night on New York radio. While the two records both feature hard-nosed lyrics from Hov and ‘Ye, their sounds couldn’t be more different. Well, the sonic versatility doesn’t stop there. Singer/songwriter Verse Simmonds revealed to MTV News that the multiplatinum rap tandem will also be experimenting with dubstep on the new album. After getting a call from Bu Thiam, Def Jam’s VP of A&R, to submit tracks for WTT, Simmonds and his production partner, Sham “Sak Pase” Joseph, immediately went to work. “What we did is, we locked in a week, we just went crazy on everything Jay and Kanye,” Simmonds told MTV News. “I remember telling Sham, I was like, ‘Yo, I think this dubstep stuff is going to be the next new flavor that everybody gotta be on. It gotta have a hip-hop feel to it still.’ ” The result is “Who Gon Stop Me,” a track that, according to the “Buy You a Round” singer, is influenced by the U.K. style of electronic dance music. Together, Verse and Sak Pase make up the Jugganauts, and for “Who Gon Stop Me,” Joseph made the beat and Simmonds wrote and referenced the chorus. “We started creating the track, and it just started to come crazy, so we came up with the concept,” Simmonds said before reciting a loose rendition of the song’s lyrics. “It was like, ‘Who gon stop me, huh? Black cards, Black cars, whole lot of money.’ ” To pen the hook on the track, Verse said he first imagined himself in Jigga and Yeezy’s shoes. “When I recorded it, everybody was like, ‘Yo, you sound just like Kanye, you sound just like Jay-Z,’ ” he remembered. “It’s just crazy, because I felt like, at that moment in time, I was them. I got into that mode of: ‘What would these guys say? How would they say it?’ I think they heard it the first time and loved it.” Hopefully, the fans will too. But the moment star Taylor Lautner most dreaded came after all of them and involved him finding his soulmate in the body of a newborn baby — but not in a weird way, if that’s possible. At least, not entirely. And since the birthing scene is going to require a lot of CGI before the product is finished, Lautner wasn’t even able to act off another person while he “imprinted.” “I was given an X on a wall,” Lautner explained at San Diego Comic-Con . “I don’t know what I would have wanted [instead]; there isn’t any ideal situation here.” In the book, Lautner’s character, Jacob Black, plans on killing the child that nearly killed his best friend and major crush, Bella (played by Kristen Stewart). But upon seeing the baby in front of him, he imprints on the little girl and discovers that she is the woman he will spend the rest of his life loving, and his murderous purpose disappears. Lautner explained his experience filming the scene, saying, “I had to walk into the room with the intention of killing this baby and then stop, twist and imprint on it, whatever that means.” Co-star Robert Pattinson, laughing out loud, exclaimed, “That sounds amazing!
