Hugo Chavez, the firebrand President of Venezuela, has died at the age of 58. Unlike last week’s erroneous reports of his demise, this time it’s the real deal. Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who reported that Chavez was battling for life earlier this week, confirmed that he lost the battle about 45 minutes ago. Maduro said that Hugo Chavez died at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday . “We must unite now more than ever,” said Maduro, fighting back tears and flanked by cabinet ministers, calling on Venezuelans to remain “peaceful and respectful.” Maduro said plans for Chavez’s state funeral are still TBA. He also did not specify if/when elections would be held. “Our people can count on having a government of men and women committed to protecting them,” Maduro told the South American nation, according to CNN. The announcement came hours after Maduro met with the country’s top political and military leaders about Chavez’s worsening health condition. Chavez had been in Cuba for months seeking medical treatment. Maduro suggested someone may have deliberately infected Chavez with cancer; unlikely as that seems, the politician had been in bad shape for some time. Although not regarded as a national security threat quite on par with other notable global despots, the socialist Chavez was an outspoken critic of the U.S. That’s as mildly as we can put it. Guy was not an America fan. Whatever you might think of Chavez and his legacy, here’s hoping that his passing ushers in a new era of improved relations between the two countries.

I honestly thought I’d never get the chance to write my own Bieber Experience, but I never ever gave up! I’ve been a massive Belieber since around September 2009 and I’ve followed his career ever since. I’ll never ever leave him. It all started when Justin announced his dates for the UK Believe tour. There was a big confusion about tickets and when they were coming out. Luckily I had finished school so that I could stay on my laptop all day and buy them. I had saved up some money for a meet and greet and my parents agreed to pay the rest because they knew how much it had meant to me. On the 24 th February I was going to meet Justin, finally! I’d seen him before in concert but I couldn’t believe I was finally going to meet him and see him perform live from the front row! When it was finally the day of the show, we got to the arena and were given merchandise and other stuff you got with the package. They also give you a raffle ticket and raffled things off like Justin’s shoe and his glove, but I didn’t win anything. After a bit, Justin’s backup singer (@iam_vernonb) came out and hardly anyone knew who he was, I was so shocked. I was like ‘OMG HI!’ Then Kenny came out and everyone went crazy! But finally it was time to start. I was third in the queue to meet Justin. He was really late because he had been doing stuff for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. I gave his presents to the security who promised me so many times he’d get them. As I walked in, Justin was checking the picture he had just took with the 2 girls in front of me. Then when he looked at me, I just threw my arms around him asking for a hug (didn’t give him a choice really haha!) and he put his arms round my waist. I was refusing to let go so we had to walk back in place for the picture still hugging. When I was hugging him I said, “You mean everything to me,” and he looked at me and smiled. Then he spoke to my friend. We got the picture and I was being dragged out but I held onto his hand and told him I loved him. He looked right into my eyes, it was literally a glance but it felt like a life time and winked at me. Like a proper wink with a cheeky smile on his face and said, “Love you too.” Oh my god it was perfect! I was like, “OMG LOVE YOU BYE THANK YOU THANK YOU.” It was really fast. The concert was then amazing. We got right by the runway and got to hold Justin’s hand twice. My name’s Mollie, and I never in a million years thought I would be able to write a MBE. It’s so unreal! I’ve never met Justin before, although I went to see him on the My World tour back in 2011. When I found out Justin was bringing the Believe Tour to the UK I knew I had to go! I knew the tickets would sell out so fast during the general sale so I was so worried I wouldn’t get any tickets. I was on Twitter one day in school and saw a girl had posted that she had got meet and greet tickets. I quickly texted my mum and she told me she would look to see if there was any. When I came home from school my mum told me she could only get the ‘Diamond Package.’ I was really happy, but a bit upset knowing that I would probably never meet Justin now. A few weeks later, after I wouldn’t stop going on about meeting Justin somehow, my mum couldn’t take it anymore and told me she had actually got the meet and greets! I was SO happy. After months of counting down the days, it finally arrived on Wednesday February 27th 2013. We travelled down to Birmingham which was about 3 hours away by train, and arrived at the venue. We stood in line with all the other people who had purchased meet and greets. Then we went and stood in another line. Dan Kanter and Nick DeMoura came out to say hi and ask us all how we were, if we were excited to meet Justin, etc. They took photos with everyone and were so lovely. Finally it was the time to go meet Justin! They took us down some stairs where we stood in three lines and then we saw the black curtain. We were all so excited knowing that Justin was right there! Scrappy and some of the dancers came to say hi from behind the curtain too. We had to leave our gifts for Justin outside but they said they promised us, that our gifts and cards would get to him. The moment I’d been waiting 4 years for was finally here! “Next group,” they said. I walked behind the curtain and there he was. We walked over to Justin and he said “Hi.” I was so speechless, I just looked at him, thinking how perfect and flawless he was. We asked for a hug, and he said, “Yeah, of course you can.” I couldn’t believe it, I just hugged Justin! They took our photo, it was so fast, they really didn’t give us the chance to have a conversation or ask Justin any questions. I was walking out and told Justin that I loved him, and he gave me the cutest smile and nodded his head! I wish we could have had a little longer time with him, but it was the best time of my life. I cried for about an hour afterwards. You could really tell that Justin would of liked to stay longer with us all and talk, but the security were just rushing us all so much. My name’s Megan, and this is my Bieber experience. On the 28th of February 2013 I was lucky enough to meet my idol. Throughout the whole day, all I spoke about was meeting Justin. I had a math exam which I ran out of just so I would be on time to meet him. I travelled to Birmingham, the butterflies were already there. I got to the arena and my mum left. I was on my own, but I got to meet a few fans who were also waiting around. While waiting for the meet and greet they did a raffle of his dancer’s shoe, his dancer’s jacket and Justin’s drum skin, signed by him and he’d used before in concert. They read my numbers out for his drum skin! I didn’t even realize and people had to tell me. I never thought it would have been ME to win something like that. Later, I met Dan Kanter while I was waiting for Justin to be ready for the meet and greets. We spoke for about 5 minutes, I touched his hair and had a photo with him. When I walked inside the tent to see Justin, his face was perfect he was smiling so much. He looked even more perfect in person than in pictures. I don’t even understand how that can be possible but it was. My voice was so croaky and I basically forgot how to speak when I saw him. I said, “Hi” and then stood on the left of him. He grabbed me and moved me to the right of him, I had shivers. We took our picture and he had his arm around my back, I never wanted to let go. He smelt of just gorgeousness and he was just so gorgeous in general. As I was walking away he ran his hand down my back and said, “I love you sweetie, bye.” I will NEVER forget that. I didn’t even get to say “I love you too,” but it was perfection. I know he loves every single belieber , but to hear the words come out of his mouth to me was insane. I’ve loved Justin from the very start and have supported him the whole way. My first ever concert was when Justin Bieber came to Ireland in 2011 and my 2nd concert was when he was in London the next week. I was lucky enough to get two tickets to his concert in London and have a VIP ticket to see him during his sound check. At the sound check, he was asking questions to fans and during this time I was holding up my camera. He must of thought I was holding up my hand up to answer so he looked at me and said, “Do you know the answer?” I was in shock that Justin Bieber spoke to me. I replied saying, “Sorry no..I’m sorry,” and he said “No problem,” and gave me a smile. For months after that I didn’t stop smiling and being happy. When Justin’s tickets came out for Ireland I was on the computer trying to get tickets and I did… but I had a massive surprise on Christmas morning. I opened a envelope to reveal a meet and greet ticket. So I had 2 tickets for his concert on the 17th and one for the 18th. In my town there is a place where women and their children stay if they were abused by their husbands so I decided to make a little girl’s (who would have never got to go to his concert) dream come true and I gave her my spare tickets. It felt great knowing that the little girl and her mum were at his concert, singing along to all his amazing songs. I was nervous about going to the concert by myself but was still super excited to see my idol. When I got to the venue I met loads of friendly people and I didn’t feel so scared anymore. We went in, got our wristbands and a bag with loads of cool Justin Bieber stuff including a signed record sleeve of Believe. One of the crew members came out with tank tops and gloves belonging to Justin for a raffle. With my luck I doubted I would win anything but I was so lucky to win a signed poster of Justin from a pervious concert. It is now in a frame hanging in my room. Also the girl beside me won his shoe and I got a picture with it. Justin was late but was so sweet and didn’t want his fans waiting too long. He asked his dancers and musicians to come out to us and take pictures. That was amazing. I got picture with Dan Karter and his autograph. Then as soon as I walked behind the black curtain I saw Justin. I couldn’t believe it. It was actually him. He didn’t look real because he was so perfect. I slowly walked up to him with a massive smile on my face. He smiled at me and said, “Hi.” I was so amazed that I just looked at him and gave him another massive smile. He put his hand on my shoulder. He was wearing a cap and I was a good height because I fitted under it. He nozzled his head against mine and we got the picture taken. It was all happening so quickly. After I meet him and got my wristband taken off, I broke down crying realizing how fortunate and lucky I was to meet Justin Bieber. I rang my friend crying with joy and told her. I walked to my seat in row 5 which is really close to the stage. The concert was amazing. He performed so well and it was just amazing. I loved it when he sang ‘Be Alright’ because I go to a boarding school, so when I’m ever homesick I listen to that song and well, everything is alright. The 18th of February was/is/will be the best day of life. I really can’t believe I’m writing my own MBE! My name is Paola, I’m from Cyprus (a tiny island near Greece) and I’ve been a huge belieber for the last 3 years. I’ve been listening to Justin’s music from the beginning and they were always like a drug to me. His music inspires me. However the real Bieber fever hit me some months before NSN came out. The fact that my country is so small makes it impossible for Justin to do a concert here, so it was so difficult for me to get to see him. Both my parents believed that it was very complicated for me to see him and they decreased my hopes but I was so determined and dedicated. I worked a lot and raised enough money in order to go against my parents. Last July when I was on vacation in Australia, the tickets for the UK Believe Tour came. I bought some very good floor seats for Manchester. I started to fangirl, screamed and cried so much! I was actually seeing Justin live. I checked out Twitter and saw a tweet from @UKBieberday saying that some more M&G tickets for Dublin were released on Ticketmaster. That was when I started shaking and sobbing. I wasn’t able to make the order so my dad helped me. I soon realized I was going to Dublin to meet Justin – my mind froze. I was the happiest girl alive! All my hard work and determination were finally rewarded. So then two happy months went by and it came to the day I flew to Dublin. We went to the O2 venue and that was when the dream started feeling like reality. I met so many amazing beliebers. I even hugged a crying girl waiting for the standing area. She was so sweet! Then we stood at the queue for the M&G and they were playing Bieber songs and I got SO excited. Justin was so late so Nick Demoura came out and we took a selfie together and I gave him a hug. He was THE CUTEST. Then Dan came out, oh my god, he is the kindest and most friendly person ever! We like talked for 10 minutes and I tried to convince him to come to Greece! Then Justin was ready to start and the queue started moving so fast. It was me and my cousin. I started shaking and couldn’t feel my hands. From that moment everything was a blur. He seemed so unreal! He was so flawless! His smile, his eyes, his voice, his everything. I couldn’t help it and I screamed ‘JUSTIN!’ and he looked at me in the eyes, smiling! I remained there staring at him. He was like, “Come here,” and smiled. I went and gave him a little hug touching the back of his neck. SO HOT. Then my cousin asked for a kiss and he laughed and said, “Woaaah take it slow, take it slow.” He was so cute. I said, “Can I have a big hug?” and he was like, “Yeah, quick though,” but then wasn’t allowed since they were about to take the picture. He was like, “Right here sweetie…” and I shaking and he smiled and said, “Relax,” as I melted. They took the picture and he said thank you. The security guards said that we had to leave but I had not given him a hug yet, so I asked him again and he said yes, but they started pulling me away. I started crying and saying, “Just a hug! I came all the way from Cyprus!” and he was coming towards me smiling and blowing me kisses. He is so amazing! I went out sobbing on the floor. I couldn’t even breathe. Then we went to our seats in the arena and they were AMAZING. We could see all of his gestures and movements. The show was magical. He is so talented and passionate. He is the best idol ever. When he was singing, “Fall,” I was sending him kisses, crying and he saw me and smiled. He made me feel SO SPECIAL. He is the man of my dreams.
