Larry King Officially Quits

It’s finally happened. Larry King — a suspendered person famous for marrying ladies and interviewing people in a gruff, oft-confused haze — has announced that he will be ending his CNN show Larry King Live this fall. “With this chapter closing I’m looking forward to the future and what my next chapter will bring,” he said in a statement , “but for now it’s time to hang up my nightly suspenders.” Yes, and those suspenders? Try all you want, but they don’t fit you, Piers Morgan . [ CNN ]

Larry King To Be Replaced By ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ Judge?

A number of reports claim CNN’s longtime host Larry King is about to be replaced by Piers Morgan, one of the judges on “Britain’s Got Talent” and its U.S. version “America’s Got Talent.” According to the British Telegraph, “The Britain’s Got Talent judge and former newspaper editor is on the verge of signing a four-year contract to take over King’s primetime show in the autumn.” “King, 76, has reigned over American television for decades, with the Larry King Show first airing in 1985. However, his ratings for the first three months of this year fell to an all-time low of just 771,000 viewers, down 43 per cent in the last year.” Yet other reports say Morgan could be replacing Campbell Brown. Here’s the New York Post’s take : The Time Warner-owned cable network has hemorrhaged viewers to Fox News Channel and even lost some to its own sibling service, HLN. There’s a talent drain as well: CNN recently lost Christiane Amanpour to ABC’s “This Week” and Gerri Willis to Fox Business Network. CNN currently has Campbell Brown’s 8 p.m. slot open — although a source said the network is also sounding out possible replacements for “Larry King Live.”   Regardless of who Morgan might replace, wouldn’t this throw a wrinkle into CNN’s “ambition” to be the “straight news” option on cable? On the other hand, as King recently celebrated his 25th anniversary on CNN with half the audience he had when he began a quarter century ago, there is a delicious irony in Larry being replaced by someone from “Britain’s Got Talent.” Think about it.

Actual Talent Sneaks onto America’s Got Talent Premiere

America’s Got Talent , which kicked off its fifth season last night, is usually associated with the Cirque du Freak school of showmanship, the kind of magic, mayhem and fire-hocking you might see in traveling carnival or an embarrassing Pink video. Maybe the addition of Howie Mandel to the judges’ panel has added a new layer of, ahem, cleanliness to ATG , because an actual talent launched off our screens like a feisty farmhand leaping off a hay loft. Thirty-year-old Michael Grimm is a guitar-clasping folkie with a Hurricane Katrina back-story and a tip can full of earnestness. But even better, he’s a superior singer to Lee DeWyze and he resembles a post- Knight’s Tale Heath Ledger. Read: Chilling perfection.

What’s On: Talent or No Talent

Howie Mandel replaces David Hasselhoff on the panel of America’s Got Talent tonight alongside Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne. If Howie’s air-fistpumps to a fire-juggling troupe isn’t your thing, more traditional choreography and slapstick awaits you in the rest of tonight’s lineup.

Simon Cowell: Totally Smitten with Mezhgan Hussainy

As evidenced by his response to Ryan Seacrest’s question during a live broadcast of American Idol last week ( Who are you winking at? My girlfriend. ), Simon Cowell is in proudly in love with Mezhgan Hussainy . Whether or not these two are engaged is still a question , but Simon’s feelings for the make-up artist are not. “You just know when you’ve found somebody special and I feel very, very happy,” Cowell tells Piers Morgan in an interview that will air Saturday in England. The judge, of course, will leave American Idol after this season. What else does his future hold? Possibly children. “The thing about kids, it’s like marriage, you know you have to believe you’re in something that you’re in for the long term, a hundred percent,” Simon said, not dismissing the possibility of procreation. The Afghanistan-born Hussainy has been seen sporting a huge diamond ring, but neither she nor Cowell will confirm if a proposal has taken place.
