‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’: The Reviews Are In!

One critic hails a ‘more heroic’ portrayal by star Michael Cera, while another calls the comic book flick ‘one long, sneering in-joke.’ By Eric Ditzian Michael Cera in “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” Depending on who you hang out with and what websites you frequent, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is either the most authentic coming-of-age love story that’s ever been told about kids who grew up with 8-bit video games or a movie that will leave you screaming, “Death to hipsters!” What else is there to say? To read through reviews of Edgar Wright’s film is to understand how fully a critic’s biography and aesthetic vision influence his or her writing. We bring our own personal baggage to the cinema, even if we all feed from the same bin of stale popcorn. We’ve gathered together a few of these wildly divergent reviews. Before making up your mind about whether you’re a “Scott Pilgrim” fan or hater, you can check out what the critics are saying. Or better yet, see the movie yourself, and then make up your mind. The Story “Over-explaining Scott Pilgrim’s plot would take away from the Pop Rocks-exploding fun. Scott (Michael Cera) is the 22-year-old bassist for a mediocre Toronto punk band called Sex Bob-Omb. (Their songs, which I found a bit too realistically mediocre, were written by Beck.) Scott has a sassy gay roommate (Kieran Culkin), a meddling sister (Anna Kendrick), and a girlfriend, Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), a Sex Bob-Omb superfan who’s still in high school. But Scott falls hard when the purple-haired, poker-faced Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) moves to town. To win her, he must not only summon the courage to break up with Knives; he must defeat an evil legion of Ramona’s seven exes, who include a vegan rock star (Brandon Routh), a Bollywood-dancing Goth (Satya Bhabha), and twin Japanese DJs (Shota and Keita Saito).” — Dana Stevens, Slate . The Visuals “The movie does everything its makers can dream up to imitate a manga: Screens split in half and then in half again. Action speeds up or slows down. Comic book word sounds — ‘whoosh,’ ‘r-i-i-i-i-n-g,’ ‘thud’ and the like — pepper the screen. Backstories about exes are told in rudimentary sketches. The movie frame becomes a graffiti zone where the filmmakers can insert all sorts of written commentary including the fact that a character has to pee.” — Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter. Michael Cera “As Pilgrim, Cera is more assertive and, yes, heroic than he has been in most of his work (though there is ‘Youth in Revolt’ to bear in mind). He’s gone past the stammering gawkiness of his early work into something less adolescent, if not fully mature. The transformation hasn’t reached a conclusion yet, but it’s interesting to watch.” — Shawn Levy, The Oregonian. The Director “Much of the movie’s whacked-out humor is the work of the director. Wright’s facility with eccentric ornamentation — bursts of canned laugh-track laughter, proudly cartoonish graphics, dreamscape enchantments and sudden split-screenery — is irresistibly endearing; and his whiz-bang editing is a marvel throughout. (He’s always one step ahead of the viewer, suddenly taking us places we didn’t realize we were ready to go to yet.) And the script, which he co-wrote, is a feast of deadpan throwaways. (‘I’ve dabbled with being a bitch,’ says Ramona. ‘My brother is permanently enfeebled,’ notes Stacey.)” — Kurt Loder, MTV News . The Dissenters “The story and characters of ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,’ then, are negligible. But fans of the novel aren’t likely to care, reserving their most passionate interest for how director Edgar Wright has brought their precious antihero to the screen … He dials ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ up to 11 within minutes, leaving him nowhere to take the narrative energy. Trippy onscreen titles (‘Riiiing!’ when a telephone rings, ‘Dddddd’ when someone plays the bass), Super Mario Bros. graphics, light saber duels, jump cuts, screen wipes, zingers, quips and doggerel — it’s all played with the same emphasis and knowing insularity. Unless you can hear its particular whistle, ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ is a grind, as monotonous and enervating as one long, sneering in-joke.” — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post. The Final Word “There is plenty of [visual wit] in ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ — fast cuts, off-kilter puns, sight gags and sound effects in such profusion that you may want to see it again as soon as it’s over. But underneath is a disarming sincerity and a remarkable willingness to acknowledge ambivalence, self-doubt, hurt feelings and all the other complications of youth. At the end, the movie comes home to the well-known territory of the coming-of-age story, with an account of lessons learned and conflicts resolved. But you’ll swear you’ve never seen anything like it before.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times. What did you think of Michael Cera’s latest flick? Share your reviews in the comments! Is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World the Same Movie as Twilight?

Sure, both Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The Twilight Saga are page-to-screen adaptations with ardent fanbases, but the boys in Scott Pilgrim’s corner wouldn’t be caught dead seeing a Twilight movie of their own volition. The irony? Underneath Scott Pilgrim’s geeky exterior and Twilight’s swoony romance novel trappings, they may actually be the same movie.

How Much Will Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Make This Weekend, Anyway?

Unless watching nubile young co-eds get torn to shreds is your idea of a good time, this weekend marks the end of the summer from a box-office relevance standpoint. Though at least things will probably go out with a bang: It has been widely predicted that The Expendables and Eat, Pray, Love will each open to around $30 million in ticket sales, but what of the third major release hitting theaters on Friday, Universal’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World ? Good question! Ahead, Movieline handicaps its box-office bonafides.

Hayden Panettiere Doesn’t Actually Hate Scream 4

It’s probably a good thing that Scream 4 hasn’t been in the news lately, since the last time it was, director Wes Craven and star co-star Hayden Panettiere were not-so-subtly complaining about the production . But what a difference a few weeks makes! Or, at least that’s what Panettiere would have you believe. Warning: Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Michael Cera faces off against Chris Evans in the scene, which premiered during the MTV Movie Awards pre-show. By Todd Gilchrist Michael Cera in “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” Photo: Universal Studios Squaring off against seven evil exes is no small task, even if it’s in the service of securing your place next to the girl of your dreams. But there’s a reason Michael Cera’s new film is called “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” — namely, that the sum total of his opposition adds up to more or less the equivalent of an armada of adversaries and, more than likely, a world of hurt. And one of the fiercest foes Cera’s Scott Pilgrim scuffles with is Lucas Lee, whose punches are packed with the panache of actor Chris Evans, who will soon be seen donning Captain America’s red, white and blue cowl. Audiences around the world just saw the premiere of an exclusive clip from Scott Pilgrim during the MTV Movie Awards pre-show, but check it out again right here. Following an introduction by director Edgar Wright, who brings the breakneck cinematography and brilliant sense of humor from “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” to the comic book adaptation, the clip begins with poor Scott being introduced — via a detour to the asphalt — to his beloved Ramona Flowers’ (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) ex-boyfriend Lucas (Evans). Lucas decks him with one blow, pausing momentarily afterward for a studio flunky to polish his clenched fist, but Scott is surprisingly resilient; getting back to his feet, he makes a beeline to let Lucas know he’s not yet finished with him. Instead of standing up to Lucas, however, Scott finds himself face to face with one of Lucas’ stunt doubles, one of the guys he lets act in wide shots “when [he] feels like betting blazed in his Winnie,” as Lucas puts it. The double summarily also lays Scott out, and as the love-struck pugilist stands up again, Lucas reveals that he doesn’t just have one stuntman, but several. A spectacular battle erupts as skateboards and swinging punches fly through the air, with Scott more than holding his own until he gets a particularly powerful shot to the face. Of course, you’ll have to see if Scott survives when the movie arrives in theaters August 13.
