Hilton Botha, Oscar Pistorius Case Detective, Charged With Attempted Murder

The Oscar Pistorius case took a strange twist after it was revealed that Hilton Botha, the lead investigator, was charged with seven counts of attempted murder. Prosecutors said they didn’t know Botha faces seven charges of attempted murder in connection with the October 2011 shooting of a minibus in South Africa. Hilton Botha, a 24-year police veteran with 16 years as a detective, is slated to appear in court this May along with two other police officers in the incident. The bus shooting charges were initially dropped in the wake of the incident, but officials said the Director of Public Prosecutions had reinstated the charges. The country’s National Prosecuting Authority said the detective should be taken off the Oscar Pistorius case, but it’s a decision only police can make. The revelation came one day after Botha testified that authorities recovered two boxes of testosterone, along with needles, from Pistorius’ bedroom. This raised speculation that Pistorius was on steroids when he fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last week at his home in Pretoria, South Africa. In the bail hearing, Botha testified that contrary to Pistorius’ claims, he knew Steenkamp “was in the bathroom, and he shot four shots through the door.” Pistorius has claimed that he thought she was an intruder when he fired and the whole thing was a tragic accident; police and prosecutors say otherwise. Botha and Pistorius actually crossed paths before in 2009, when the detective investigated accusations of assault against the Olympic track superstar. Pistorius won global acclaim as the first-ever double-amputee runner in Olympic competition last year, holding his own against able-bodied athletes.

Oscar Pistorius in Court: Olympian Cries, Does Not Enter Plea on Murder Charge

Oscar Pistorius broke down in tears in a South African courtroom Friday after being charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp . The Olympic sprinter’s attorneys requested to postpone the bail hearing, as did the prosecution. He did not enter a plea and will remain in custody. In his first public response , Pistorius’s family and management team said in a statement that “the alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms.” The statement also said Pistorius “would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family” of Reeva Steenkamp, who died at his home at age 30. Though authorities initially believed that Oscar Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder, they have since downplayed that possibility. “There is no other suspect involved,” police spokeswoman Brigadier Denise Beukes told the AP, noting that several witnesses are being interviewed. Oscar Pistorius was charged with murder early Thursday. The 26-year-old athlete, a double amputee, became the first Paralymic star to run with able-bodied athletes in an Olympic games last summer in London. Reeva Steenkamp, a model and advocate for women, appeared to be in good spirits before her tragic death, tweeting about Valentine’s Day just hours earlier. “It should be a day of love for everyone,” the model wrote. Police found Steenkamp’s body in a pool of blood in Pistorius’ home in Pretoria on Valentine’s Day. She was reportedly shot four times by Pistorius. Oscar Pistorius News Report

Oscar Pistorius, Double Amputee, Advances to 400 Meter Semifinals

SPOILER ALERT: Oscar Pistorius made history today at the London Olympics. History that it’s hard to believe will ever be duplicated. The South African sprinter, who was born without fibulas and had hid legs amputated below the knee at 11 months old, qualified for the 400 meter semifinals today with a season-best time of 45.44 seconds. Known as The Blade Runner, Pistorius became the first amputee to ever compete in Olympic track. “I’ve worked for six years … to get my chance,” said the 25-year old, who will run again tomorrow night. “I found myself smiling in the starting block. Which is very rare in the 400 meters.” It took many years for Pistorius to receive permission to compete here. Many doctors and experts believe his prosthesis actually give him an advantage because they enable him to do less work as he runs. But many hearings later and Pistorius was given his chance. As you can see, he’s making the most of it.
