Exclusive: Paramore React To Josh Farro’s ‘Exit Statement’

Band opens up to about Farro brothers’ departure during ‘Paramore: The Last Word,’ live on MTV.com Friday at 4.p.m. ET. By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: MTV News FRANKLIN, Tennessee — Hayley Williams isn’t going to deny any of it. Not the anger, the sense of betrayal she felt two weeks ago when reading Josh Farro’s “Exit Statement,” or the bewilderment over the bizarre set of circumstances that led to that statement. But more than anything, she’s not going to deny her overwhelming desire to put the whole incident behind her … which is why MTV News flew to Tennessee last Thursday to talk to Williams and her Paramore bandmates Taylor York and Jeremy Davis about the split with the Farro brothers, and their plans to move forward without them. Because as they told us, once 2010 came to a close, they had no intention of addressing the topic anymore. “There’s been a lot of things said online, especially in the past week, and it sucks … it sucks to read it, and it also sucks to know that responding isn’t really going to help, online, because things travel so terribly on the Internet,” Williams said. “So we really wanted the opportunity to show our fans that we’re OK, you know? The three of us are still here, we’re not going anywhere. A lot of kids are still asking if the band is breaking up, and that just goes to show how broken the communication online can be, when rumors start traveling. So this is our way of showing that there’s a future and we’re stoked for it.” MTV News will examine the band’s past and future in “Paramore: The Last Word,” a live stream on MTV.com on Friday, December 7 at 4 p.m. Because unlike any other band of their stature and status, Paramore just can’t seem to escape the past. To this day, questions exist about their formation, talk of Williams’ initial pseudo-career as a solo artist and about the group’s early days as an indie-label act with major-label backing. And if, by some bizarre circumstance, you weren’t aware of any of that, well then Josh Farros’ statement probably brought you up to speed. A large portion of our interview last week dealt specifically with Josh’s central points — points the band deemed “irrelevant” — and, on Wednesday, we’ll publish Paramore’s responses to them. But we figured the best place to start with a situation this complex is at the beginning: with the band’s first reactions to Farro’s statement, which turned what had been a rather amicable split into something else entirely. “I don’t know if I got a phone call or an e-mail, but I woke up to it, basically, and that sucked, and I was not happy,” Williams said. “And yeah, it hurts, because what we were told was that they weren’t happy, they didn’t want to do this, and you can’t be mad at someone for not feeling something. … But then when it really became about all these other things, I was very surprised and kind of felt led on, almost. We’ve been doing this for six, seven years now. I don’t think any of this has been in vain, for any of us … and I don’t think anyone should discredit it.” “It was a drag. … Once we released our statement , we all knew they would probably release something,” guitarist Taylor York added. “So I think we were all kind of bracing ourselves. You know, breakups are hard, and there’s a lot of feelings so we kind of, in a way, we expected there to be something weird. So, yeah, it was really hard to read, just because it seemed like a lot of the stuff was pretty irrelevant to what happened. I think that was the weird thing, ’cause it just didn’t seem really necessary.” Of course, Williams and York said all of this in carefully measured, downright diplomatic tones. You get the feeling, had we sat down with them on the morning of December 22, immediately following Farros’ statement, their reactions would’ve been slightly different. But Paramore made it clear that are trying very hard not to get angry, if not for the sake of the band, then for the sake of their fans. “You feel every single type of emotion possible when something like this happens with someone that either was — or is — very close to you, you just feel everything, all at once,” Williams smiled. “I’ve never felt so … I don’t know, I couldn’t even figure out how I felt. But after realizing, like Taylor said, that it was kind of going to happen this way, you’ve just got to know that what’s important is the three of us are still here, and that we want to do this, and that’s the positive part about this.” MTV News will be unveiling our exclusive interview with Paramore on Friday at 4 p.m. ET with “Paramore: The Last Word,” a live stream on MTV.com that will feature in-depth analysis of the band’s future, real-time discussion with their biggest fans and exclusive footage of the band, past and present. Chris Brown, Raz-B In Bitter Twitter Feud Over Rihanna

Former B2K member and Brown trade angry comments about homophobia and domestic violence. By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Chris Brown recently posted proof that he had completed a year-long domestic violence course as part of his sentence for assaulting Rihanna. But despite getting glowing reviews from the judge in his case, Brown proved this week that he can still get a bit hot under the collar when it comes to certain subjects. According to reports, on Wednesday, the “Deuces” singer got charged up when former B2K singer Raz-B tweeted a comment critical of Brown. After posting a dozen messages declaring his admiration of Rihanna, he wrote of her ex, “I’m just sittin here thinking how can n—as like [Eric Benet] and [Chris Brown] disrespect women as intelligent as Halle Berry, Rihanna.” Brown quickly shot back, tweeting , “N—a you want attention! Grow up n—a!!! Di– in da booty ass lil boy.” The harsh comments were an apparent allusion to allegations Raz-B made — and later retracted — that B2K manager Brian Stokes had molested him. Several other homophobia-tinged responses followed, but, unlike in the past when Brown went into Internet silence after making heated statements, he vowed that this time he would not delete his Twitter account. “I was minding my damn business and Peter pan decides to pop off!!!” Brown wrote. “I’m not mad though!!! I’m just not silent nor am i one of these scary R&B cats!!” In light of the harsh statements, Brown followed up by writing, “I’m not homophobic! He’s just disrespectful!!!” Raz didn’t hold his fire, either, responding, “When I need tips on how to demolish my career I’ll call ya!!!!” He then following up with several more jabs at Brown’s career, which took a hit in the wake of the Rihanna assault. “I love how u resort 2 disrespectful low brow tactics when u clearly sabotaged ur own career by beating women.” The ugly back-and-forth continued, with Brown assuring his gay fans that he loves them, saying that “this immature act is not targeted at you!!!!” Brown continued to try and change the tenor of the talk, posting early Thursday morning, “LOVE ALL MY SUPPORTERS and people who know my heart. HOMOPHOBE? c’mon, find a better tactic. that’s pure ignorance and stupidity. i love everyone.” Brown was sentenced to a domestic violence course in August 2009 after he reached a plea deal with Beverly Hills prosecutors in the wake of his felony conviction on charges of assault against then girlfriend Rihanna. The singer was required to take the once-a-week class for one year, sentenced to 180 days of community labor, placed on five years of probation and issued a stay-away order from Rihanna. “I have enough self-respect and decency to be proud of accomplishing this DV class,” Brown tweeted last week about the end of his domestic violence classes. “Boyz run from their mistakes. Men learn from them!!! thx.” The singer is due back in court on January 28 for his next status hearing. Lindsay Lohan Accuser Drops Charges

Police say they will look into the incident further. By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan Photo: Marsaili McGrath/ Getty Images After speaking out about a December 12 incident with Lindsay Lohan at the Betty Ford rehab facility, Dawn Holland has dropped her charges against the embattled starlet. The former rehab worker released a statement to TMZ noting that she wouldn’t pursue a case against Lohan. “Dawn will not continue to press charges against Lindsay, nor will she be assisting any further in the investigation or prosecution,” her lawyer, Kevin Davidson, said. Davidson continued that “a crime has quite simply not been committed by Ms. Lohan.” Holland is reportedly a recovering addict herself and does not want “in any way, shape or form to do anything that would violate Lindsay’s probation or cause an arrest.” E! News reports that while Holland may not be pursuing charges, the Palm Desert Police Department is keeping an investigation into the incident open. “We are continuing our investigation,” the spokeswoman said. “We hope to be done sometime in January.” When asked how Holland would respond if subpoenaed by the police department, her lawyer simply responded “she won’t.” Holland was a technician at the Betty Ford Center and was fired shortly after she gave a video interview in which she discussed the alleged altercation. “She was the only patient out of the three who was being very uncooperative and out of control,” Holland said in the video, explaining that Lohan had been acting defiant at the rehab center. “I did not touch the woman! I am not willing to risk my job over any patient.” Related Videos Lindsay Lohan: Crime And Punishment Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Lady Gaga To Make Born This Way Announcement New Year’s Eve

‘My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE,’ she writes in a Christmas tweet. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Lady Gaga is kicking 2011 off with a bang. The singer shared with her little monsters that, come New Year’s Eve, she will have a special announcement for her loyal fans about her upcoming album, Born This Way. She tweeted over the weekend: “Merry Christmas little monsters! I love you with all my heart. My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE. -MM.” The Mother Monster didn’t reveal anything else about the announcement but did react to a fan-made video sending Christmas love to the superstar. “This is so darling!” she wrote . “You make me so happy, Im sending you monster kisses!” Gaga had always planned to end 2010 on a high note. She shared with Rolling Stone back in June that she had every intention of making an announcement on New Year’s Eve, even if what she had planned to announce was pre-empted. “I think I’m gonna get the album title tattooed on me and put out the photo,” she said of her plans six months ago. “I’ve been working on it for months now, and I feel very strongly that it’s finished right now. It came so quickly. Some artists take years; I don’t. I write music every day.” Since she already revealed her album title at the VMAs , what she plans to announce on New Year’s Eve is a mystery, but we’re sure her fans are counting down the moments. Gaga recently shared that the album will be her “most innovative.” A single is expected in February , and the album will follow shortly thereafter. “[The album is] a marriage of electronic music with major, epic, dare I even say, metal or rock and roll, pop, anthemic style melodies with really sledge-hammering dance beats,” Gaga said. “I think that lyrically this album is more poetic … It’s really written by the fans, they really wrote it for me because every night they’re funneling so much into me. So I wrote it for them. Born This Way is all about my little monsters and me, mother monster.” What do you think Gaga will unveil on New Year’s Eve? Share your guesses in the comments! Fish Thought to Be Extinct for 70 Years Rediscovered

Photo credit: skyseeker / Creative Commons In 1940, a hydroelectric dam was constructed in northern Akita Prefecture, Japan. The project, it was known at the time, would destroy the only native habitat of the black kokanee salmon by making the waters too acidic for the fish to survive. Still, developers went ahead with their plans. A concession was made to protect the species: 100,000 eggs were transported to nearby Lake Saiko. Unfortunately, the transplanted eggs did not hatch and the

Enrique Iglesias To Perform ‘Raunchier’ New Single At AMAs

The pop star says ‘Tonight’ is ‘a little bit dirtier’ than his previous songs. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Enrique Iglesias rehearses for the AMAs on Thursday in Los Angeles Photo: Kevin Winter/ AMA2010/ Getty Images Enrique Iglesias will be making quite the statement when he takes the stage to perform at the American Music Awards on Sunday. The Spanish pop star will not only be singing his “Jersey Shore”-approved hit single, “I Like It,” but also his much naughtier new tune, “Tonight.” For those not familiar with the club jam, “Tonight” finds Iglesias making a very interesting offer to a lady, as he sings, “Please excuse me/ I don’t mean to be rude/ But tonight I’m f—ing you.” There’s really no subtext in the tune. “I’m singing my new single, which is called ‘Tonight,’ and it features Ludacris,” the singer explained to MTV News at his AMA rehearsal on Thursday. “It’s a little bit dirtier and raunchier than the things I’ve done in the past, but I like it. That’s what I feel. I felt good about it.” Most certainly, Iglesias will change the song’s catchphrase to the radio-approved “Tonight I’m loving you.” Regardless of the edit, he explained that the tune’s risqu

Lollapalooza To Go International With Chile Shows

The alternative-rock festival’s first-ever overseas dates to take place on April 2 and 3 in Chilean capital of Santiago. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Lollapalooza Perry Farrell is a dreamer. And for the longest time, the Lollapalooza co-founder and Jane’s Addiction singer has had a vision of packing up his iconic alternative-rock festival and taking it overseas. In April, for the first time in the event’s nearly 20-year history, he will finally get his wish when Lollapalooza touches down for two days in Santiago, Chile . Though a lineup has not yet been announced for the April 2 and 3 gigs, Farrell promises that the Lollapalooza International shows at the downtown O’Higgins Park will live up to the platinum standard of the now-destination fest, which has taken place on the Chicago lakefront since 2005. “There are a series of prerequisites when selecting a destination. Number one is space. It must be open and lovely; scalable up to 100,000 patrons,” Farrell said in a release announcing the gigs, which will feature a mix of international talent and homegrown Chilean artists. “Second is the proximity to the city. We provide the entertainment. The city provides the culture, hotels, restaurants and clubs. Then, most important are the people. The people of Santiago have a passion for contemporary music and lead international lifestyles. Perfect.” Farrell described O’Higgins as a scenic location with a gentle-sloping grass viewing area that has a view of the Andes Mountains in the distance, as well as a “large round discotheque that houses up to 10,000 people.” The recreational area is also adjacent to an amusement park with a roller coaster. Working with a local promoter, Farrell said he intends to not only include indigenous Chilean artists, but to also explore a “musical foreign exchange” by bringing in some acts from Chicago as well. As for how he’s going to draw a large audience to the first-ever Lolla outside of the U.S., Farrell said he expects it will be no problem. “We are confident a massive music audience is awaiting us in Santiago,” he maintained. “What we are very interested to learn is how widely spread the demographic will be. In Chicago we have hipsters as well as young parents with children in attendance. It is one of the few places in the world where a generation gap doesn’t exist.” In the meantime, fans of the domestic version of the festival can start making their plans for the 2011 edition, which will take place August 5-7 in Chicago. It will be a challenge to top the list of stars from the 2010 Lollapalooza , which included Lady Gaga, Green Day, Soundgarden, Arcade Fire, MGMT, Phoenix, the Strokes and the Black Keys. UK Press Finds Possible ‘Muslim,’ ‘Islamic’ Plot to Kill Pope; AP Finds ‘Street Cleaners’

Check out the following headlines in the British press about the arrest of six men who may have been planning to kill the Pope during his visit to England: “Muslim Plot to Kill Pope” (Daily Express) “Pope visit: Five suspected Islamist terrorists arrested over assassination plot” (Telegraph) “Police question six street cleaners held over plot to attack the Pope” (Daily Mail) (2nd paragraph: “Armed officers detained the men, all believed to be Muslims of North African origin, as they prepared to go on shift at a cleaning depot in Central London.”) Yet in neither of two separate articles by the Associated Press ( Nicole Winfield and David Stringer/Victor L. Simpson ) do the writers mention a possible extremist Muslim/Islamic connection. The writers simply identified the suspects as “London street cleaners.” Why is the mention of at least a possible Muslim connection warranted? Because if these men are indeed Muslims who had a lethal plan, it would not mark the first time that Islamic extremists have sought to kill the Pope. Only by sheer luck did Philippine police thwart a terrorist plot to kill Pope John Paul II during a visit to Manila in 1995 . If Ramzi Yousef did not accidently set some explosives on fire in a Manila apartment, the deadly plan, which was less than a week away , likely would have gone forward undiscovered. In addition, the Daily Express reported that the “alleged plot is believed to be the second planned assassination on the Pope recently . In April, Moroccan students Mohamed Hlal, 26, and Ahmed Errahmouni, 22, were deported from Italy, strengthening fears that Al Qaeda were seeking recruits there.” (This also refutes Stringer’s and Simpson’s claim in their article that “there have been no known plots against Benedict in his five-year papacy.”) Like other media outlets, the AP has downplayed the seriousness of the plot. However, the Daily Express quoted a Vatican source , “Publicly the incident is being played down but privately the arrests verge towards the serious side and came as a result of intelligence work .” The two articles by the AP follow dreadful coverage by the AP’s Nicole Winfield earlier this week. In an error-ridden and slanted piece on Monday (9/13/10), she falsely claimed that Pope Benedict XVI had “broken his own rule” in his plans to beatify 19th century Anglican convert John Henry Newman. (Read more about that here .) — Dave Pierre is the author of the heralded new book, Double Standard: Abuse Scandals and the Attack on the Catholic Church .

‘Devil’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

After a long wait, M. Night Shyamalan’s first installment in the ‘Night Chronicles’ trilogy arrives on Friday (September 17). By Kara Warner Bojana Novakovic in “Devil” Photo: Universal Pictures Looking to be creeped out or develop a sudden, irrational fear of elevators? Well, you’re in luck, as the first chapter of the M. Night Shyamalan-produced “Night Chronicles” trilogy, “Devil,” arrives in theaters on Friday (September 17). The film centers on five strangers trapped in an elevator who, through a series of unforeseen circumstances and incidents, slowly realize one of their fellow passengers might be the Prince of Darkness himself. We’ve been following all the gory, sometimes gossipy, details on the film from start to finish. Here’s everything you need to know about “Devil.” Back in 2008, Shyamalan announced his plans for a supernatural trilogy, and in October the official news release went out for film #1: “Devil,” to be written by Brian Nelson and directed by brothers Drew and John Erick Dowdle. One full year later, the casting announcements trickled in, first with star Chris Messina , then the rest of the crew . Again, after a sizable chunk of time passed and the release date was moved up, the first trailer and poster arrived online. Days later, the thought of Shyamalan attached to the film sparked laughter from moviegoers. All chuckling aside, the buzz for the film continued to build when we got our hands on an exclusive clip in late August, along with a very enlightening sit-down interview with Shyamalan himself. MTV News’ recent chat with the filmmaker covered numerous hot topics, including the origins of “Devil,” how 3-D “enhanced” “The Last Airbender,” his plans for “Airbender” sequels, how his idea for “Unbreakable 2” will now be part of “Night Chronicles,” and how he feels like he’ll always be the “uncool kid” . The filmmaker also participated in a spoof trailer for the horror flick called “Escalation.” A second “Devil” clip arrived in early September, a little more than one week out from the film’s release, and it begged the questions: Would you be able to maintain your civility if you were trapped in an elevator with a group of strangers? How about if weird, possibly supernatural things started happening? And what if someone gets bitten in the dark by an unseen being? Finally, after the rumors swirled for months, it was announced that “The Last Exorcism” director Daniel Stamm will take on the second chapter in the “Night Chronicles” trilogy, “Reincarnate” — a change from the originally released title, “Twelve Strangers.” That film is set to begin production in 2011. Check out everything we’ve got on “Devil.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
