Wyclef Jean Excluded From Haiti Presidential Candidates List

‘He is not on the list,’ an electoral official told Reuters on Thursday. By Kara Warner Wyclef Jean Photo: Michelly Rall/ Getty Images Wyclef Jean’s Haitian Presidential run might be cut short. According to Reuters, Jean is not on the list of approved candidates (released on Thursdaywho were found to have satisfied legal requirements to run in the country’s November 28 presidential election. Since the rapper announced his bid for office on “Larry King Live” earlier this month, his plans have been met largely with enthusiasm from the country’s residents, but he has been challenged on one key presidential requirement: residency. “He is not on the list as I speak,” an electoral official told Reuters, citing legal requirements that Jean does not meet as the reason for his exclusion. However, the official would not reveal which specific requirements the singer has failed to meet. Wyclef, who left Haiti with his family to live in New York at the age of 9, said on CNN that he was running because he felt he was being “drafted by the population,” in the wake of the country’s devastating January earthquake. “After January 12 … being out here with my wife and picking up dead bodies from the ground, I felt that because of the youth of Haiti and the population, that this is not even Wyclef saying that ‘I want to be the president of Haiti.’ I feel like I’m being drafted by the population right now to give them a different face, a different voice,” the singer explained. Wyclef has acknowledged his lack of political experience, but also argued that his position as a political outsider would work to his advantage. “What qualifies me to be president of Haiti, when I look at the past 200 years, with what our people have suffered, Wolf — political instability, coup after coup d’

OUTRAGE OVER PLANS TO BUILD LIBRARY NEXT TO SARAH PALIN

PLANS to build a state-of-the-art library next to Republican catastrophe Sarah Palin are causing outrage across mainstream America. Campaigners have described the project as insensitive and a deliberate act of provocation by people with brains. The issue is forming a dividing line in advance of November's mid-term congressional elections with candidates being forced to declare whether they have ever been to a library or spoken to someone who has books in their home. Meanwhile President Obama has caused unease within his own Democratic party by endorsing the library and claiming that not everyone who reads books is responsible for calling Mrs Palin a fuckwit nutjob nightmare of a human being. But Bill McKay, a leading member of the right-wing Teapot movement, said: “Sarah Palin is a hallowed place for Americans who can't read. “How is she going to feel knowing that every day there are people going inside a building to find things out for themselves and have thoughts, right in the very shadow of her amazing nipples.” He added: “Our founding fathers intended for every building in this country to be a church containing one book, written by Jesus, that would be read out in a strange voice by an orange man in a shiny suit who would also tell you who you were allowed to kill. “Building a library next to Mrs Palin is like Pearl Harbour. Or 9/11.” And Wayne Hayes, a pig masseur from Coontree, Virginia, said: “I is so angry right now. “It's like something is on fire right in the middle of my head. Like I've eaten a real hot chilli, but it's gone up my nose tubes rather than down my ass tubes.” He added: “Would these library lovers allow me to set up a stall next to the Smithsonian Museum and start selling DVDs of bible cartoons as long as it was in accordance with local regulations? “Oh they would? I see. So is that why they're better than me?” Almost 40% of Americans still support the idea of books. added by: toyotabedzrock

J.J. Abrams Developing ‘7 Minutes In Heaven’

‘Lost’ scribe Jack Bender will helm thriller based on teen party game. By Adam Rosenberg J.J. Abrams Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images With his Bad Robot production company, J.J. Abrams has tackled a highly successful “Star Trek” reboot, a genre-flipping giant-monster-invades-city movie, an impossible mission and a handful of the most gripping network television shows of the past 10 years. What’s left to tackle? High school party games! Bad Robot is developing a thriller based on “7 Minutes in Heaven,” The Hollywood Reporter reveals. The name refers to a teenage party game in which two randomly selected participants are stuffed in a closet together for seven minutes, presumably spending their time either making out or staring at each other awkwardly. In the movie pitch, which originated with “Lost” writer/director Jack Bender, the two teens emerge from the closet to find that all of their friends are dead! Bender signed a feature deal with Bad Robot earlier in the summer and the “7 Minutes in Heaven” movie will be his to direct. The next step is to find a writer, and Bad Robot is looking for one now. Bender’s experience as a feature director is limited to little more than “Child’s Play 3,” but he’s got a strong background in television as a writer and director on “The Sopranos,” “Carniv

Usher, Chris Brown Tease Co-Headlining Tour Online

‘What would you guys say if me and Usher went on tour?’ Brown tweeted after producer leaked tour in YouTube video. By James Dinh Chris Brown and Usher Photo: Robert Keshishian/ Newscom With their top-notch dance moves and tunes that make the ladies swoon, an Usher and Chris Brown co-headlining tour sounds like an idea made in R&B heaven. And according to producer Bryan-Michael Cox, it may just happen. This news comes just weeks after Breezy’s surprise onstage appearance during Usher’s set at Reggae SumFest. Speculation began when Cox revealed during Jermaine Dupri’s “Living the Life” YouTube show that the singers are planning to tour together. “Usher and the boy Chris Brown are going on tour, y’all know that, right?” Cox said. Dupri immediately replied, “They might not know that.” But after the cat was let out of the bag, Cox admitted, “I might’ve just gave y’all some exclusive sh–.” Once word spread that that Usher and Breezy might be planning a co-headlining tour, the trio took to Twitter to respond to the hype. Responding to a fellow songwriter, Cox seemed to backpedal his revelation when he tweeted , “@rchonore86 I was drunk. Lol. Talking crazy. I don’t know for a fact that THAT tour is happening. But it would be dope tho. Lol.” But the R&B heartthrobs kept the idea alive as they asked fans what they think of the possibility of an Usher/Brown tour. “What would you guys say if me and Usher went on tour?” Brown tweeted . An hour later, Usher’s Twitter message read, “If you could see Usher perform live with anyone – who would it be?” Reps for Usher and Brown could not be reached for comment at press time. Earlier this year, Brown’s U.K. tour plans were postponed because the singer was denied a work visa on the grounds that he is guilty of a serious criminal offense. Kanye West Confirms Bon Iver Cameo On Upcoming Album

Collaboration, called ‘Lost in the World,’ will appear on MC’s fifth full-length, due in November. By James Montgomery Kanye West Photo: MTV News Kanye West has always been a man of discerning taste — check the roughly 18,000 fashion-related posts on his blog, or his sampling of Daft Punk on his massive hit “Stronger” — but earlier this week, when rumors began circulating that he was working with austere indie auteur Bon Iver (aka Justin Vernon), they seemed, frankly, too discerning to be true. But on Friday (August 13), West confirmed that Vernon will appear on his upcoming new album, which is supposedly due November 16 . “I called [Vernon] and we ended up becoming, like, really good friends, playing basketball together every day, and going into the back studio and just recording his parts,” West told Rolling Stone . “He’s similar to me, like where he just does sh–; so people would be like ‘Oh sh–, how did you do that? How did that happen?’ ” West and Vernon collaborated on a song called “Lost in the World,” which features re-recorded vocals from the Bon Iver track “Woods.” West told Rolling Stone that he became a fan of the song, which features Vernon’s Auto-Tuned vocals, when Ed Banger Records honcho Pedro Winter played him the track and talked about his plans to sample it. West then asked Winter if he could use the song instead, and quickly flew Vernon out to Hawaii. The two quickly bonded (we like to imagine it was the basketball that did it), and West now counts Vernon as one of his friends. “He’s just a really cool guy to be around,” West said. On Friday, Vernon talked about the collaboration, and the pair’s budding friendship, in an interview with Pitchfork . “I think he’s very aware of the person he is, and I applaud him for that,” said Vernon. “It takes a lot of strength just to stay how he is amongst all the sh– that he’s subjected to. But I found him extremely like a bro. You could talk to him about whatever.” It’s been a busy 24 hours for West. On Thursday, he announced that he would appear on the Video Music Awards on September 12; Thursday night, he performed at a secret black-tie show in New York City . ‘American Idol’ Producer Nigel Lythgoe Discusses Show’s Future

‘I’m reading so much baloney,’ Lythgoe says of rumor-filled search for new judges. By James Montgomery Nigel Lythgoe Photo: Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images Earlier this month, it was announced that Nigel Lythgoe would be returning to “American Idol” as an executive producer, ending a two-year absence during which the once-mighty show took a tumble, in terms of both ratings and cultural relevance. His return couldn’t have come during a more tenuous time for “Idol,” which has already seen the departures of iconic judge Simon Cowell , quickly improving Kara DioGuardi and, uh, genuinely nice Ellen DeGeneres . In fact, at the moment, the show has just one judge under contract for next season (that would be Randy Jackson) and has embarked on a lengthy, rumor-filled search to find two new talents to pair him with, with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and, until recently, Jennifer Lopez the reported frontrunners. Obviously, Lythgoe has his work cut out for him. Rumors abound that he’s contemplating a massive overhaul of the show, though in a new interview with Yahoo Music he kept his plans close to the vest while making it very clear that he believes “Idol” ‘s flagging fortunes can be reversed. “Listen, I wouldn’t be going back if I didn’t think the show could be turned around,” he said. “I do think if we put the focus back in the right place, which is on that young talent, [then] why wouldn’t it be successful?” Lythgoe also downplayed reports that J.Lo’s diva-like demands had taken her out of consideration for the “Idol” judges’ table, and cautioned that no one should believe anything they’ve read about just who will be joining Jackson on the show. It’s still very early in the process, after all. “I’m reading so much baloney in everything. There was something in the press saying Jennifer Lopez is a diva. That woman is in no way a diva, they don’t know what divas are if they think Jennifer Lopez is one. … There is so much rubbish going on,” he said. “My feeling is [the selection process] depends on the content of the panel, and the chemistry within it. I don’t care if they’re Romanian, as long as they fit in with the people around them, and we get a feeling that they know what they’re talking about. “All you want [in an “Idol” judge] is somebody who’s going to be honest with their decisions, not somebody who’s going to say things to be nice,” he continued. “And why would a star, in truth, want to come on that show and say, ‘You were crap tonight?’ because that star is going to be booed. … So it’s going to be really difficult. You just want honest people.” To that end, Lythgoe added that “Idol” might just choose a few lesser-known talents to serve as judges. After all, it worked in the past, and Lythgoe sees no reason why it couldn’t happen again. Such a move just might return the focus of the show back towards the contestants. “Don’t forget, when I started ‘American Idol,’ I brought over Simon Cowell, who no one had heard of, and a young man called Randy Jackson … and Paula Abdul, who a lot of people had said, well, her career is over,” he said. “And that was the start of a team that will be revered every time judges are spoken about. So it isn’t just about what you’ve done in your career, it’s about how you fit in with other people around you. And at the end of the day, it’s about the contestants and their talent, and it’s not about the judges.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Justin Bieber Discusses Importance Of Giving Back At Usher’s Charity Event

Teen star also recently signed on as spokesperson for Proactiv acne treatment. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James ‘FLX’ Smith Usher and Justin Bieber at the World Leadership Awards on Friday Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images Justin Bieber currently has a lot on his plate. He’s on tour. He’s working on a book and a movie . He’s prepping the release of his next single, “U Smile.” And he just wrapped shooting his cameo on “CSI.” But that doesn’t mean he isn’t taking time to give back. MTV News caught up with the teen star on Friday night at Usher’s New Look Foundation’s first World Leadership Awards in Atlanta. He was excited to use his celebrity to bring attention to the charity, as well his voice to bring some tunes to the party. “You know, I’m really excited to be here to support Usher, my mentor, and his New Look Foundation. I’m here [and] I’m performing tonight. I’m also helping out another charity,” he shared on the red carpet. “It’s called Pencils of Promise . It’s all about giving back and helping out kids that need education. It’s really important that I’m able to help out other kids. I’m a kid myself, so it means a lot to me.” While he tweeted his intention to release “U Smile” as a single very soon, at the event, he kept his plans rather vague. “Musically, the next thing you’re gonna hear from me is I might be putting out a single in the next couple months,” he said. “I’m always making hits.” Bieber also recently added a new job to his r

NY Times Reporters Hail Mayor Bloomberg’s Weepy Defense of Ground Zero Mosque

The front page of Wednesday’s New York edition of the New York Times featured the news that a controversial plan to build a mosque two bocks from Ground Zero was approved by the city’s landmarks commission: ” Mosque Plan Clears Hurdle In New York — Bloomberg Pleads for Religious Tolerance .” But reporters Michael Barbaro and Javier Hernandez actually led with NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s weepy speech about religious tolerance, falsely asserting that that denying permission to build a 13-story Islamic center topped by a mosque would somehow be “denying the very constitutional rights” that New York City police and firefighters died protecting. And the Times again insinuated that opposition to the mosque is coming mostly from outsiders, while New Yorkers have gotten on with their lives and don’t oppose it — a half-truth at best, as shown by results of a poll of New Yorkers. Times reporters were very impressed with the speech. Both Jodi Kantor and Brian Stelter linked to speech coverage on their Twitter feeds, Kantor calling it a “must-read” and Stelter calling it ” worth reading .” Here’s the Times’s lead: As New York City removed the final hurdle for a controversial mosque near ground zero, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg forcefully defended the project on Tuesday as a symbol of America’s religious tolerance and sought to reframe a fiery national debate over the project. With the Statue of Liberty as his backdrop, the mayor pleaded with New Yorkers to reject suspicions about the planned 13-story complex, to be located two blocks north of the World Trade Center site, saying that “we would betray our values if we were to treat Muslims differently than anyone else.” “To cave to popular sentiment would be to hand a victory to the terrorists — and we should not stand for that,” the mayor said. Grappling with one of the more delicate aspects of the debate, Mr. Bloomberg said that the families of Sept. 11 victims — some of whom have vocally opposed the project — should welcome it. “The attack was an act of war — and our first responders defended not only our city but also our country and our Constitution,” he said, becoming slightly choked up at one point in his speech, which he delivered on Governors Island. “We do not honor their lives by denying the very constitutional rights they died protecting. We honor their lives by defending those rights — and the freedoms the terrorists attacked.” Bloomberg’s idea of freedom is quite selective — he can get blubbery over building a mosque near Ground Zero, but as his mayoralty has shown, his love of liberty doesn’t extend to gun ownership, smoking in bars, or eating food made with hydrogenated vegetable oil. National Republican leaders, like the former House speaker, Newt Gringrich, and Sarah Palin, the 2008 vice presidential nominee, assailed the proposal, calling it offensive. On Friday, the Anti-Defamation League, an influential Jewish civil rights group, declared its opposition, distressing many in the interfaith community. For the second time in recent days, the Times misleadingly implies that it’s mostly a bunch of outsiders opposed to the plan: The disagreement has underscored how differently the World Trade Center site is viewed by those in New York and those outside of it. In the city, the space has returned, haltingly, to the urban grid, sprouting new office towers and train stops. But beyond New York’s borders, it looms as a powerful symbol of the war on terror and the lives lost on that day. A Quinnipiac University poll from early July found that while Manhattanites themselves approved of the project by a 46 margin, the outer boroughs of New York City (Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens and Staten Island) oppose it. DNAInfo reporter Julie Shapiro wrote: ” New Yorkers as a whole weighed in against the mosque, with 52 percent opposing the plans and just 31 percent supporting the project .” The Times again danced around the fact that the funding of the project (Saudi Arabia is rumored to be involved) remains a secret: There were signs that the intense backlash had left moderate American Muslims uneasy about the plan for such a large center near ground zero. “There is some ambivalence within the community,” said Hussein Rashid, a visiting professor of religious studies at Hofstra University who specializes in Islam in America. “We still want to know who is going to be involved in this. So far, we have heard from just a few Muslim voices. If this is meant to be a community center, who in the community will be involved?”

Drake Reveals His Biggest Thank Me Later Regrets

The rapper laments one early leak and two songs he wishes were on the album. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV News One of the most ambitious tracks on Drake ‘s Thank Me Later is The-Dream duet “Shut It Down,” a sweeping number about seduction that clocks in at nearly seven minutes. Unfortunately for Drake, an unfinished version of the song leaked three months before the release of his debut album. The final product is a slow-grinding effort that comes to a climax with a Drake rap after the pair croon throughout their respective verses. A second leak, “Darlin’ ” featuring Lil Wayne, and the “9 AM in Dallas” freestyle, an urgent battle-style rap — both of which were recorded after Thank Me Later ‘s deadline — are pretty much the only faults Drake found with his debut. “The saddest part to me is that I would have made ‘9 AM in Dallas’ the intro for the album, but I did it the day of mastering, which is crazy, so it couldn’t make the album,” Drake told MTV News. “That’s probably my greatest upset, was the fact that it couldn’t be on the physical disc and be a part of that album. ‘Darlin’ ‘ was a loss just because it was never mixed, and every time I hear it in the club, you can never really hear the words. I think the words are the best part of that song. I think Wayne painted such a vivid picture. I tried to come in and add my little two cents at the end. “Most of the music made it,” he continued. “Most of the music we held for a long time, and the stuff that did leak, it was pretty good references. It wasn’t anything I was too upset about. ‘Shut It Down’ leaking early was painful. I think it could have been a bigger record had it not been out there so long. And ‘Fall for Your Type’ I wish was on there, but I have other plans for that record, so it’s gonna be good.” Despite records leaking and the Toronto lyricist’s album arriving online before its June 15 due date, Drake told MTV News on the day of Thank Me Later ‘s release that he never considered changing his plans for putting the project out. “They tried to force me into a situation — I’m not sure if it was the label — [but] somebody tried to force me into a situation and drop the album June 9,” Drake said. “I really was like, ‘June 9 isn’t enough time to let them digest all the leaked music. If they got the music already, let’s let them listen to it. Let’s give them that two weeks to ride around to it and talk to their friends about it.’ ‘Cause that way, when they show up to the store, there’s no pressure — you know what you’re buying. You’re just going to support an artist you love and music you believe in.” What do you think of Drake’s take on his debut album? Tell us in the comments, or tweet @MTVRapFix ! Related Artists Drake
