Larry Johnson Says NBA Players Should Form Black Owned Basketball League Via NYPost Knicks executive and former player Larry Johnson had a decidedly different but still strong reaction to the racially insensitive remarks Clippers owner Donald Sterling is alleged to have made. On Saturday night, Johnson tweeted: “Black people your Focusing on the wrong thing. We should be focusing on having our own, Own team own League! To For Self!!’’ The initial indication was Johnson was calling for an all-African-American league complete with black ownership. It wasn’t the first time Johnson, who is black, concerned himself with the fact the NBA’s ownership is mostly white while its players are mostly black. During the 1999 NBA Finals between the Knicks and Spurs, Johnson caused a stir by saying: “We’ve got a lot of rebellious slaves on this [Knicks] team.” When asked at the time why he referred to his teammates as slaves, Johnson said: “I’ve got to explain that to you? We don’t go with the mainstream.’’ Johnson was hired by the Knicks two years ago and serves many roles as a basketball and business operations representative. Donald Sterling on Black NBA Players: I Give Them Money and Food!

A day after audio of Donald Sterling blasting his girlfriend for publicizing her interactions with African-American hit the Internet, another tape of the Los Angeles Clippers being very racist has gone public. In footage obtained by Deadspin, Sterling continues to talk down to V. Stiviano, saying of the black players on his team: “I support them and give them food, and clothes, and cars, and houses. Who gives it to them? Does someone else give it to them?” Donald Sterling Audio: More Racist Comments! He went on to tell Stiviano he’s not afraid of replacing her with another girlfriend because she doesn’t support his views on race. Hours after his initial comments hit the Internet, Sterling responded in a statement that said what is reflected on the recording is the “antithesis” of what he really believes about minorities. Elsewhere, President Obama has joined the chorus of those castigating this billionaire. “When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don’t really have to do anything. You just let them talk. That’s what happened here,” Obama told reporters during his trip to Malaysia. He added that Sterling’s comments were “incredibly offensive” and are an example of how the “United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race and slavery and segregation.” “That’s still there, the vestiges of discrimination,” the President concluded. “We’ve made enormous strides, but you’re going to continue to see this percolate up every so often.” Meanwhile, TMZ has obtained the photo of Stiviano and Magic Johnson from Instagram, the one that set Sterling off on his racist rant to begin with:

Good news, Cliven Bundy : you have some racist company in the world. Donald Sterling – owner of the Los Angeles Clippers – has been caught on tape in an argument with his girlfriend, going off on her for posting an Instagram photo of Magic Johnson… and for being seen with black people in public in general. It’s truly galling stuff: Donald Sterling Racist Rant Along with telling his girlfriend that she’s “stupid” for thinking skin color doesn’t matter, Sterling has also been caught making the following statements: It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to? I’m just saying, in your lousy f-cking Instagrams, you don’t have to have yourself with, walking with black people. Don’t put [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me.  And don’t bring him to my games. Sterling has been sued twice by the federal government for allegedly refusing to rent apartments to African-Americans and Latinos; and he’s been sued by a former executive for racial discrimination. “It’s a shame that Donald Sterling feels that way about African-Americans,” Magic Johnson said in response to this video. “He has a team full of amazing African-American basketball players that are working to bring a championship to Clippers fans. The Clippers also have a strong minority fan base.” The Clippers are currently up two games to one against the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the NBA playoffs.
