Pau Gasol: Denying Entry Passes, Lindsay Lohan

L.A. Lakers star Pau Gasol is a defensive force, flummoxing foes nightly with his long arms, basketball IQ and surprising quickness for a big man. The man routinely denies NBA centers, so you can imagine how easily he dispatched another star trying to step into his house: Lindsay Lohan. The troubled actress made a late night dash over to the Sunset Marquis in hopes of partying at Gasol’s NBA soiree Friday, but was swiftly rejected. GET THAT OUT : Pau Gasol smartly defended his position . “The guest list was pretty specific, so there wasn’t much leniency,” said a source.” But if I’m being honest here, Lindsay is seen as too much trouble.” “That’s the reason she wasn’t allowed in. If it had been someone else with a better reputation there is no doubt they would have made an exception.” Hard to blame Pau for not wanting expensive stuff stolen . You know NBA players and bling. It’d be like letting Lindsay Lohan loose in a jewelry store. Or something. Lohan did not put up a fight, according to reports, but became unsettled at being turned away and began wandering aimlessly through the lobby. “She could have just gone to the Bar 1200 which was right there in the lobby. But she began acting a little strangely instead,” said the insider. “We thought perhaps she had a room there – or that one of the friends with her did – because she headed for the elevators, rode them up and down for about 10 minutes before going down to the parking garage and heading out that way. Ah, the classic “pretend you’re busy with somewhere to be” bit. Nice one. For someone taking her sobriety seriously (or so she claims), the alleged necklace bandit has been awfully active on the nightlife scene lately. The previous night, she stopped by Teddy’s nightclub at the Roosevelt Hotel. All we know is that she ended up in bed with Samantha Ronson .

Poor Thang: Breezy Hosts A Pity Party In L.A. (25+ Photos)

Poor Breezy probably didn’t make it on too many A-List guest lists this All-Star Weekend , what with Illuminati Hov and his pop princess pawn Rih Rih running the town. So he threw his own party! With a guest list that included Tila Tequila, Lil Mama, Jordin Sparks – who we’re sure had something better to do, our Twitter buddy Wesley Jonathan and our in-real-life homie DJ Drama – who will probably both get on us for making fun of Breezy’s party, and football players Marcedes Lewis and Lonyae Miller and “actor” Jensen Atwood. As if the lack luster guest list wasn’t enough to make you laugh, Breezy gave some of the best-dancer-face-by-a-Grammy-nominated-artist ever. Like this. Flip through for more of Breezy’s dancer face and laughable moves, and shots from the red carpet.

Some Sunday Controversy: David Aldridge Labels NBA All-Star Weekend As The “Black Thanksgiving”

Here’s what CNN writer David Aldridge feels about NBA All-Star Weekend (which caused quite the stir in the sports world) …Via CNN : So, you want to know about Black Thanksgiving? That’s what sports writer Mike Wilbon calls NBA All-Star Weekend. First of all, what you need to know about Wilbon, whom I love, is that he has been known to exaggerate just a touch on occasion. But on this one, he’s on point. For those of us who cover the NBA for a living, like me and Wilbon — now an ESPN yakker and writer, formerly a Washington Post yakker and writer, and my friend –All-Star Weekend is a long four days of work. But for most of the people who descend into town — this year it’s Los Angeles, with its still sparkling Staples Center and the surrounding “L.A. Live” area — it’s an opportunity to go wild (sometimes a little too wild, as happened in Las Vegas a few years ago) and get together. Other folks have Tweetups. Black people have All-Star Weekend, or ASW. It’s a national holiday, sort of. ASW is the only time of the year that people call me. I don’t say that to be maudlin, ’cause most of the time, I don’t want people to call me. (Dirty little secret: I don’t really like talking on the phone.) But they come out of the woodwork this time of year, because NBA players are royalty in Black America, and everyone wants to be near them. The old saying is that ballers want to be rappers, and rappers want to be ballers. That’s really, really true. Basketball is a culture. It isn’t for everyone, though the game is loved by people of all colors. There is a rhythm to it, just as if McCoy Tyner was dribbling a ball instead of playing piano. “Considering that the culture of basketball in a predominantly black league like the NBA is so strongly connected to African American culture, the NBA All-Star weekend has turned into a celebration of African American culture by extension,” says Todd Boyd, professor of critical studies at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. The season begins just as baseball’s ends, when the days grow short and the weather turns windy and cold. The tempo is slow at first, like the beginning strains of John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme,” but then, just as with Coltrane, it picks up steam. Rookies like the Clippers’ Blake Griffin find their voice, and their game blossoms, as the calendar turns to a new year. While older, wiser veteran players and teams tinker here and there, not much interested in the daily standings, knowing that the important games come in the spring. They can wait. Does this offend you???

Justin Bieber Named MVP Of 2011 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game

‘We’re just here having a good time,’ Bieber says after winning the coveted title. By James Dinh Justin Bieber at the 2011 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game on Feb. 18 Photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic As his quest for world domination continues, Justin Bieber took to the basketball court on Friday evening to co-headline the 2011 BBVA NBA All-Star Celebrity Game in Los Angeles. And even though his team lost, the teen sensation won the coveted title of MVP at the end of the star-studded game. Bieber did his best to play alongside fellow celebrity participants including Romeo, Common, Rob Kardashian, Trey Songz, actor Michael Rapaport and Nick Cannon. Basketball stars Scottie Pippen, Bill Walton, Rick Fox, Jalen Rose, Mitch Richmond, Chris Mullin and Swin Cash rounded out the game players. While NBA luminary Bill Walton coached the Eastern Conference, Magic Johnson served as instructor for the Western Conference. With the star talent covering the court, the East and West teams delivered steady competition against one another. But once the third quarter kicked in, the East Conference began dominating the scoreboard with a 41-33 lead. Bieber proved his basketball skills to his West team with a stat line that included eight points, two rebounds and four assists. But in the end, the Eastern Conference took the game by storm with a final score of 54-49 (Western). Despite his team’s loss, the Biebster won over the play-by-play sports commentators, who praised the teen star when he scored. “Justin Bieber! He could be thinking about that MVP award. He has game,” one announcer said. And as predicted, the celebrity all-star showdown ended with ESPN’s Heather Cox awarding the Most Valuable Player trophy to the teen sensation. “We’re just here. We’re having a good time. We went out there and beat them,” Bieber joked. “It was all because of my boy Magic over here.” Earlier in the game, Bieber rounded up his legion of Twitter followers to vote for him as Most Valuable Player during the star-studded game, tweeting , “Everyone text ‘bieber’ to 69622 for me to be MVP in the all-star celeb game. I’m going in!!! Haha.” Not only were his Beliebers able to snatch the title for the pop star, they also showed their support for the 16-year-old singer by creating yet another trending topic on Twitter called “BIEBER ALERT.” Did you watch Justin play during the 2011 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game? R.I.P.: Former Chicago Bears Player Dave Duerson Dead At 50

Dave Duerson, a key player on the 1985 Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears, was found dead Thursday night in his Miami home at the age of 50. The Miami Dade County coroner did not state a cause of death. News of Duerson’s passing sent shock waves through the 1985 team. When newly elected Hall of Famer Richard Dent woke up Friday morning, his voice mail was full of messages from former teammates calling to talk about Duerson. Several teammates said they had spoken with Duerson in recent weeks. “When we spoke recently, he sounded great,” former Bears defensive back Shaun Gayle said. “It’s a real shock to all of the guys.” Duerson was selected by the Bears out of Notre Dame in the third round of the 1983 draft. He became a starter in 1985 and played in the first of four consecutive Pro Bowls that year. In 1987, he was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. He also was the one of the Bears’ NFLPA representatives, and he was a leader through the 1987 strike. “He was a hell of a football player,” former Bears coach Mike Ditka said Friday. “He came in at the right time for us because that’s when Todd Bell held out. He fit right in, became a starter. We liked everything about him at Notre Dame. He rounded out that defense. He fit in perfectly with Gary Fencik back there and was one of the leaders of our team.” The Bears released Duerson after the 1989 season. He signed with the Giants and won a Super Bowl in his only season with the team. He finished out his career playing three seasons for the Phoenix Cardinals. After growing up in Muncie, Ind., he was a four-year starter at Notre Dame and a two-time All American. In 1982, he was a Fighting Irish captain. He was named first-team All-America pick as a senior by the Football Writers Association of America, Football News and College & Pro Football Newsweekly. As a junior in ’81 he earned third-team All-America honors from Football News. “Our hearts go out to the Duerson family and to all those who knew Dave,” Notre Dame vice president and athletics director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement. “In addition to being a great football player, Dave represented himself and the University in so many other ways as a team captain, as well as through his work with the Monogram Club and the Board of Trustees. You couldn’t help but be impressed by him when you met Dave Duerson, and I think that was thereaction from anyone who was ever around him.” After his football career ended, Duerson’s life took some harsh turns. He became owner of Brooks Sausage Company, which later changed its name to Fair Oaks Farms. The company supplied sausage to Burger King and other fast food chains. Under Duerson’s leadership, Fair Oaks grew its annual sales to $63.5 million from $24 million. He sold his stake in the company in 2002, and started Duerson Foods. That company was forced into receivership in 2006, and most of its assets were auctioned off. Duerson had his Highland Park home foreclosed in 2007. In retirement, he also butted heads with Ditka about disability benefits for former NFL players. In 2007, Duerson filed for divorce from his wife of 24 years. The year before, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. Duerson subsequently lost his position as a University of Notre Dame trustee. His former wife Alicia Duerson told NBCChicago, “Our family asks that you please remember Dave as a good, kind and caring man. He loved and cherished his family and friends and was extremely proud of his beloved Notre Dame and … Chicago Bears. Please keep Dave and our family in your prayers.” Duerson was a consultant in Florida, and was hosting an Internet radio show called “Double Time with Double D,” on VoiceAmerica.com. He broadcast his final show Thursday. He is survived by four children. R.I.P. Source

Liam Neeson’s ‘Unknown’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics give high marks to Neeson, but are divided on neo-Hitchcockian thriller. By Shawn Adler January Jones and Liam Neeson in “Unknown” Photo: Warner Bros. With apologies to the groundhog, Liam Neeson is quickly becoming February’s biggest star. Two years after the action-thriller “Taken” made him perhaps Hollywood’s unlikeliest action star, the Oscar-nominated man who played Oskar Schindler is back to kick butt and take names in “Unknown,” a neo-Hitchcockian thriller about a man who awakens after a car accident to discover the life he thought he had has been taken away, possibly just an after-effect of amnesia. Is the movie itself worth forgetting? Here’s what the critics are saying: The Twist “As much as ‘Unknown’ tries to be an intelligent thriller for grown-ups, the premise is pretty silly and normally, when that’s the case, you know it’s going to lead to an equally silly twist. Dark Castle regular Jaume Collet-Serra’s previous movie ‘Orphan’ had one of the funniest twist endings possibly ever, though this doesn’t quite achieve that extreme of insanity because the plot is so based in thriller clich

‘X-Men: First Class’: Everything We’ve Seen So Far

Before the hotly anticipated trailer debuts, we thumb through our first peeks at Magneto, Charles Xavier, Emma Frost and more. By Eric Ditzian Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr in “X-Men: First Class” Photo: Murray Close The first trailer for “X-Men: First Class” is only hours away from going live on the film’s Facebook page, giving us our first look at footage from the upcoming superhero flick. It’s been a long time coming, considering that Fox first gave a go-ahead for the script back in 2008. Since then, we’ve gleaned all sorts of insight into the project, from interviews with behind-the-scenes players to production rumors to casting confirmations. And since filming began late last summer, we’ve been gifted with a slew of set photos and official production shots. Before the trailer arrives, let’s review everything we’ve seen so far. First Look at January Jones Our initial peek at “X-Men” came early last September, when photos of the “Mad Men” star — in full, fur-hatted costume as telepathic Emma Frost — popped up online. The aesthetic for the outfit seemed to be retro-futuristic, at once in keeping with the film’s ’60s-era setting and the mutants’ ahead-of-the-human-curve outlook. The photos also indicated — based on the presence of a red-starred jeep and helicopter — that the military will somehow factor into the story line. Meet James McAvoy Weeks later, we got our first look at McAvoy as Charles Xavier . Although taken at night and a little blurry, the photos once again showcased the film’s retro vibe. According to a report from an onlooker on the Oxford, England, set, the scene in question features Xavier “getting doctorates in theology and philosophy from Oxford University in the 1960s, his manipulation of student uprisings using his psychic powers and the way he meets best friend-turned-archrival Magneto.” The Fallen Blackbird By December, the production had shifted Stateside and we got a tantalizing look at Xavier’s Blackbird ship. The aerial shots seemed to indicate the ship had crashed on a beach. The actual location of the shoot was an island off the coast of Georgia, but speculation suggested the in-film setting would be Muir Island, Scotland, where Xavier conducts experiments to better understand the mutant gene. Weeks later, a supposed “X-Men” storyboard indicated that a mutant may be responsible for a Blackbird crash. Look at All Those Mutants! In January, a photo popped up showing a bunch of mutants together, including Jones, McAvoy, Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Rose Byrne (Moira MacTaggert) and Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique). It turned out the photo was an early leak , and director Matthew Vaughn was not pleased. “When I found out, I said, ‘What the f— is this sh–?’ and Fox is running around trying to figure out what happened as well,” he said. “I agree. It’s like a bad Photoshop, which maybe it was by someone. It didn’t reflect the movie. I was shocked when I saw it.” Official photos soon arrived: Kevin Bacon as Hellfire Club baddie Sebastian Shaw, rocking an ascot and talking business with Jones; Fassbender and James McAvoy looking stylish and concerned alongside some of their mutant students; a helmet-clad Fassbender as Magneto ; and McAvoy employing Xavier’s gift of telepathy. Most recently, looks at Magento from behind and the full X-Men logo were published on Wednesday, ahead of the trailer premiere. “I’m a fan of X-Men. We’re not bastardizing X-Men, I’m trying to get them back to being whole again,” Vaughn said. “It’s definitely more serious and more realistic, and I think that’s something that had to happen. That’s my feeling about the world we live in right now. I think the glossy colorful superhero film sorta had its day.” Check out everything we’ve got on “X-Men: First Class.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
