This was extreme. According to Raw Story: Relatives say police officers used a stun gun repeatedly on a Missouri man to prevent him from going into his burning home to save his 3-year-old son. Firefighters were called just after midnight Thursday to the fire in Louisiana, Missouri, after Ryan and Cathy Miller awoke to find smoke in the recreation room where they’d fallen asleep watching television. They were able to escape through a rear door and call 911, but the boy, Riley Miller, was still in his bedroom. Ryan Miller tried to go back into the burning building to rescue his stepson, but police officers shocked him with a taser three times to keep him from going inside. The boy was later pronounced dead from injuries he suffered in the fire, which investigators said was sparked by a faulty electrical circuit. Family members said they were outraged by the officers’ actions. “It’s just heartless. How could they be so heartless? And while they all just stood around and waited for the fire department, what kind of police officer wouldn’t try and save a 3-year-old burning in a house?” said sister-in-law Emily Miller. Authorities said a firefighter in full protective gear tried to go inside, but the flames were too hot. The boy was found near the doorway from his bedroom to the front living room, investigators said. Another son was not home at the time of the fire. This is so sad. A Chicago woman charged with DUI and obstructing a peace officer back in March says in a lawsuit that a Skokie, Ill., Police officer used excessive force. In her civil rights lawsuit filed Tuesday, Cassandra Feuerstein, 47, claims Skokie Police Officer Michael Hart used excessive force when she was arrested. Video of the event made headlines and Hart was charged with brutality. Police Officer Charged with Brutality After Shocking Video “At the door of the open jail cell, defendant Hart gave plaintiff a violent shove in the back, using both of his hands,” according the lawsuit she filed. “Defendant Hart used so much force in doing this that the plaintiff was flung across the cell head first into a cement bench at the far side of the cell.” The suit states that Feuerstein’s face was “split open” and that she began to bleed profusely. She broke several bones in her face, her lawyer said. The lawsuit also claims that Hart made false statements to others at the department, erroneously accusing her of resisting efforts to be escorted into a jail cell. Feuerstein’s lawyer, Torreya Hamilton, subpoenaed footage that shows a man in uniform pushing her into a cell and then her head striking a concrete bench: “He whips her through the door and into the cell. There was no threat to any of the police officers. It’s clear on the video that the [behavior] was indefensible.” Feuerstein underwent facial reconstruction surgery and now has a titanium plate in her face. All of the teeth on the right side of her mouth are loose. The full extent of the damage is not yet known, she said. The lawsuit doesn’t ask for a specific amount in damages. The suit states Feuerstein is seeking “a fair and just amount sufficient to compensate her.” The Skokie police report of Feuerstein’s arrest states she was parked at an intersection with her right foot resting on the brake pedal, police said. Feuerstein pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, Hamilton said Wednesday. The charge of obstructing a police officer was dismissed. Judge Jeffrey L. Warnick sentenced her to one year of court-ordered supervision and ordered her to pay a roughly $1,600 fine, according to court records. The resisting arrest charge against and three other traffic citations were dropped, records show. Hamilton said her client had no previous charges.

Via AJC A Newton County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested Thursday by federal police on accusations he sold Mary Jane, often from his marked county patrol car. Darrell Mathis, 40, was charged with distributing Mary Jane and carrying a firearm in the furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, authorities said. “This is an embarrassment to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, as well as law enforcement in general,” Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown said in a statement Friday. U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said the case was a reminder that no one is above the law. “This defendant used his position as a police officer to openly violate the very laws that he was sworn to uphold,” Yates said. “Selling Mary Jane out of his police car while wearing a badge and uniform is outrageous.” “Outrageous” is one way to put it, we were thinkin’ more like “Effing stupid”, but ok. According to the federal criminal complaint, the FBI learned in April that Mathis kept large amounts of the illicit drug out in the open at his Lithonia apartment and even bragged that he sold Mary Jane and didn’t worry because he “drives safely and flashes his police credentials to get out of tickets if he is stopped.” He also admitted to selling between 10 and 15 pounds of Mary Jane a week, according to the federal criminal complaint. Between May and September, federal authorities said Mathis sold Mary Jane to a confidential source working for the FBI and to an undercover FBI agent. On August 8, FBI officials said Mathis sold a pound of Mary Jane to an undercover agent, then went with the agent to discuss selling more drugs to another undercover agent whom he believed was a drug dealer, according to the federal criminal complaint. He took his deputy badge and gun to the meeting, and showed them to the undercover agents, saying, “Don’t worry, I’m on your side,” according to the criminal complaint. Attorney Says Not Enough Money For Bombing Victims According to The NY Daily News The administrator of a fund created to help Boston Marathon bombing victims has a blunt message for them: Lower your expectations. Attorney Kenneth Feinberg said at a public meeting Tuesday that the $28 million One Fund Boston won’t pay out nearly enough to fully compensate the families of the three killed or the more than 260 injured, and may not pay much of anything to those with less serious injuries. “There isn’t enough money to pay everybody who justifiably expects it or needs it,” he said. Feinberg’s draft plan for distributing the money reserves the highest payments for the families of the three killed in the bombings – Martin Richard, Krystle Campbell, Lu Lingzi – and for the family of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, who was shot to death by the bombers as they attempted to flee. Feinberg’s warning to lower expectations wasn’t lost on Dan Loring, whose daughter, Brittany, was so badly hurt by shrapnel from the first blast that she was in the hospital for 11 days. But the severity of her injuries still means she won’t qualify for the largest payments, leaving her father wondering about money for her care, including out-of-pocket expenses associated with her three surgeries and rehabilitation. Loring, who lives in Lancaster, Mass., said he walked two miles to his Cambridge hotel “just to clear my head” after a similar meeting with Feinberg on Monday night that drew about 100 people. A few dozen were at Tuesday’s session, which Loring also attended. “After leaving last night, I’m not so confident now we’ll see much, if anything,” he said. Hopefully things will work out. AP
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has admitted that he and his brother were behind the Boston Marathon bombings, a law enforcement official said this afternoon. Tsarnaev made his admissions to FBI agents who questioned him at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Boston Globe reported on Tuesday. He is still hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect had been given a Miranda warning at the time of the confession. Tsarnaev was charged with using a weapon of mass destruction Monday. Attorneys for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (left, above) are certain to challenge the legality of those admissions, and claims that he and his brother acted alone . The 19-year-old, who was captured after a massive manhunt Fiday night, reportedly said his older brother was radicalized in an extreme form of Islam. But in an interview with the Globe, a senior police official said authorities are not worried about the initial admission to authorities being thrown out. This is due in part to the fact that they reportedly have a strong witness: the man who was abducted by the Tsarnaev brothers last Thursday night. Police sources told the Globe that the carjacking victim has told police that Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother pointed guns at him that evening. At that point, Tamerlan reportedly told him, “We just killed a cop. We blew up the marathon. And now we’re going to New York. Don’t [expletive] with us.” The carjacking took place in Allston shortly after, police say, the Tsarnaevs ambushed and murdered an MIT Police Officer in his cruiser in Cambridge. Boston Police, State Police, Watertown Police, Transit Police and other officers confronted the Tsarnaevs early Friday after the stolen SUV was spotted. “We already knew these guys had admitted to killing three civilians and a police officer, and that they were prepared to kill many others,” the senior official said. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died in a shootout with police, while Dzhokhar escaped on foot and somehow managed to avoid capture for nearly 24 hours. According to the official, the bombers told the carjack victim that they were going to New York and used his ATM card at various locations for cash. Investigators are trying to determine if the two had either friends or co-conspirators in New York, where they said they were headed more than once. But the haphazard, ill-planned escape has many investigators skeptical that there were other any radical Islamists involved in the brothers’ attack. “If they had accomplices in New York, you’d think they would have had an established contingency plan to get there, and wouldn’t be shooting cops and stealing cars,” the official said. “That said, we haven’t ruled out anything in New York. We’re looking into who they knew down there and was anyone in New York prepared to hide them.”

Her first step in that endeavor was helping to provide prom dresses for about 100 underprivileged girls in her current home of Miami and her hometown of Akron, Ohio, doing so at a pair of events in recent days. “I can’t imagine being in their situation and not have somebody help,” said Brinson, whose wedding is scheduled for this summer. “I really care. It’s really in my soul to help people, and this is the first baby to come from it. Juan A. DeJesus, 19, of the 1700 block of Meade Avenue, was charged Monday with one count of misdemeanor possession of wildlife, police said. A state Department of Natural Resources police officer responded to an advertisement that was posted on Craigslist and went to DeJesus’ home Monday afternoon under the pretenses he was going to purchase the alligator, police said. The ad, which has since been pulled from Craigslist, stated: “Baby gator for sale, id consider a trade for a leachie gecko. Sale price is 300 obo asap.” DeJesus came out of his home with the alligator and said he would like to have $300 for it, but the officer identified himself and told DeJesus of the violation, police said.
