LL Cool J’s Journey From ‘Krush Groove’ To The Grammys

LL Cool J will become the second hip-hop artist to host the Grammy Awards on Sunday. By Rob Markman LL Cool J in the mid-1980s Photo: Paul Natkin/ WireImage Box. All it took was a simple three-letter word to jumpstart the illustrious career of a hip-hop legend. LL Cool J was unknown when he made a cameo in the 1985 film “Krush Groove” but it wouldn’t be long before the rap world began buzzing about the 16-year old boy in the baby-blue Kangol. In the flick, which was based off the formative years of seminal hip-hop record label Def Jam, LL walked into an office to showcase his talents for label brass and top talent Run-DMC. After he was denied an audition, the Hollis, Queens MC simply said, “Box,” signaling his entourage to cue the oversized boombox and start the music. It was then that LL began rapping his debut single “I Can’t Live Without My Radio,” an ode to the ghetto blasters that ruled the 1980s. Fast forward 27 years and that cocky kid in the baby-blue bucket hat has conquered every avenue in music, set new benchmarks in Hollywood and is now hosting the 54th Annual Grammy Awards . But LL Cool J (born James Todd Smith) isn’t the first hip-hop artist to host the Grammys. Queen Latifah had the honor before him, but the Grammys didn’t officially start recognizing hip-hop as a legitimate genre until 1989, when DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand” won for the untelevised Best Rap Performance. Hip-hop has certainly come a long way. “When we first started the music, they didn’t even play it on the radio in the daytime,” LL told MTV News in October when he walked the carpet at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards , acknowledging the network for dedicating an entire show to rap music. “Hip-hop was two hours at night or an hour at night on the weekends, and that was it. So to go from an hour or two hours at night to entire award shows and whole generations of people whose lives have been changed just because they’re involved with the music, that’s a big thing.” Just as hip-hop has grown, so has Smith. Back in the 1980s, when he first started his career, many considered rap to only be a passing fad. (MCs who clocked more than three albums in their discographies were thought to be anomalies.) LL has put out 14 albums if you include his two greatest hits LPs, 1996’s All World and 2009’s All World 2. There was his classic 1985 debut Radio and his critically acclaimed 1990 album Mama Said Knock You Out, which spawned the Grammy Award-winning single of the same name. In the mid-1990s, he once again proved his dominance with Mr. Smith and took his hit-making skills into the new millennium with his 2002 single “Luv U Better” off of his 10 album. Check out photos of LL throughout his career! If Uncle L’s music accolades aren’t enough, his strides in Hollywood have surely made him not just a hip-hop icon, but a permanent fixture in American pop culture. He started in “Krush Groove” with a brief cameo playing himself, but quickly followed up with an appearance in Goldie Hawn’s “Wildcats” the next year. Since then, he has starred in major motion pictures like “Deep Blue Sea” with Samuel L. Jackson, “Any Given Sunday” alongside Al Pacino and “S.W.A.T.” with Colin Farrell. LL also held it down in his own television series, “In the House,” and now stars as Special Agent Sam Hanna in the police drama “NCIS: Los Angeles.” It’s been quite a ride for LL Cool J, and when music fans watch him Sunday night at the Grammys, they will surely see a well-accomplished musician, actor and business man, while those who have followed since day one will see that 16-year-old kid in the baby-blue Kangol and say, “Wow, he’s come a long way.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss our Grammy red-carpet live stream this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. What The Hell??? Man Stabbed Girlfriend In The Forehead, Sliced Her Neck, And Slashed Her Fingers Over The Taste Of The Steak She Cooked For Him

Wow this isht right here is crazy!!!!! A Belmont man woke his girlfriend early Monday morning and demanded to know why his steak tasted different than hers before stabbing her with his steak knife, police said. According to a report from The Gaston Gazette, 32-year-old Jennifer Elizabeth Wear told police her 37-year-old boyfriend, Michael William Nivens, drank five 24-ounce beers Sunday night and repeatedly told her he loved her. Wear told police she went to bed, but woke up to Nivens holding a steak knife and repeating that he loved her, the Gazette reported. The police warrant said Nivens asked Wear why she wanted him to die. Then he asked why her steak tasted different than hers, started pulling her hair and stabbed her with the knife he had used at dinner, police said. According to the Gazette, Wear had cut marks on her forehead and the back of her neck. He also sliced open her right ring finger and stabbed through her left pinky finger, the newspaper said the warrant indicated. The Gazette reported that according to police, Nivens later called police to tell them he had been in a fight with his girlfriend. He later told the officer who arrived at the 13th Street home, “I did it. I beat her up,” the police said. He must have thought she was trying to poison him, but all that stabbing and slashing was a tad bit extreme. They need to lock his nutty a$$ up. Source

Tony Cornelius Recounts Final Phone Call with Father

A few hours before Don Cornelius committed suicide, he talked to his son. So said Tony Cornelius himself today in an interview on CBS, telling Gayle King that his famous father – who founded Soul Train in 1970 and ended his life via a gun shot to the head – called him just hours before pulling the trigger. Tony described the chat as a “call of urgency.” He was “unhappy about some things” in life, Tony added, expounding: “You have to be in a person’s shoes really to understand. Obviously, me being extremely close to him, I could tell that he was uncomfortable.” Still, Tony says no one in the family had any idea that Don’s state had grown so dire, nor that he would take this extreme, final step. In a strange twist, the music icon’s suicide will likely lead to a major payout to his ex-wife , due to Don’s life insurance policies, despite a bitter divorce between the two in 2009.

Leslie Carter Cause of Death Was Drug Overdose, According to Police Report

New details have emerged in the “mysterious” death of Leslie Carter , and it appears the 25-year-old sister of Nick and Aaron Carter died as a result of an overdose. Three prescription drugs found near her body, according to the police report . The report was taken by officials who responded to the 911 call. The three prescription bottles found were Olanzapine, used to treat schizophrenia and/or bipolar disorder, the muscle relaxant Cyclobenzaprine, and the anxiety medication Xanax. Official autopsy results have yet to be released pending toxicology tests, but a source tells E! News that family members believe Leslie overdosed on pills. Per the police report, Leslie’s stepmother Ginger found Leslie Carter’s unresponsive body around 4:10 p.m. on January 31 and immediately dialed 911. Leslie and her daughter (she was estranged from her on-again, off-again husband) were living with her father, Robert, in Buffalo and, a source says. There, she had been trying to wean herself off her medication. After her body was found, Robert performed CPR, though Leslie was ultimately pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:59 p.m. According to Ginger, Leslie “seemed okay in the morning but at times seemed depressed just by the way she was talking.” Earlier that day, Ginger said Leslie had fallen in the shower and proceeded to sleep through the afternoon while she cared for the 10-month-old baby. Robert came home later that afternoon and found Leslie not breathing or responding. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly after. Incidentally, it was also noted in the police report that Ginger, while detailing these events, was also getting “progressively worse,” with slurred speech and that authorities noted that she, too, appeared to “be overdosing on her medication.” She said she took an extra Xanax in the wake of her stepdaughter’s death.

Sh*t Is Real: Hundreds Of #OccupyOakland Protesters Break Into City Hall And Get Locked Up

The Occupy movement is showing no signs of stopping any time soon … About 300 people were arrested Saturday during a chaotic day of Occupy protests that saw demonstrators break into City Hall and burn an American flag, as police earlier fired tear gas and bean bags to disperse hundreds of people after some threw rocks and bottles and tore down fencing outside a nearby convention center. Dozens of police officers stood guard outside City Hall late Saturday following the most turbulent day of protests since November, when Oakland police forcefully dismantled an Occupy encampment. An exasperated Mayor Jean Quan, who faced heavy criticism for the police action last fall, called on the Occupy movement to “stop using Oakland as its playground.” “People in the community and people in the Occupy movement have to stop making excuses for this behavior,” Quan said. Protesters clashed with police throughout the day, at times throwing rocks, bottles and other objects at officers. And police responded by deploying smoke, tear gas and bean bag rounds, City Adminstrator Deanna Santanta said. “These demonstrators stated their intention was to provoke officers and engage in illegal activity and that’s exactly what has occurred today,” Santana said. Jerry Sandusky Issues Statement on Joe Paterno

Jerry Sandusky – the disgraced former Penn State assistant whose alleged, despicable actions led to a cover-up that will forever tarnish Joe Paterno’s legacy – has issued a statement on the passing of the iconic football coach. “This is a sad day!” Sandusky said, exclamation mark included. “Our family, Dottie [Sandusky’s wife] and I would like to convey our deepest sympathy to Sue [Paterno] and her family. Nobody will be able to take away the memories we all shared of a great man, his family, and all the wonderful people who were a part of his life. “He maintained a high standard in a very difficult profession. Joe preached toughness, hard work and clean competition. Most importantly, he had the courage to practice what he preached.” Sandusky, of course, faces over 40 counts of child sex charges ; while the inability of Paterno and other Penn State officials to report their knowledge of Sandusky’s actions to the police has led to the biggest scandal in the history of college athletics.
