Baton Rouge Shooting: 3 Cops Dead, 3 Other Officers Wounded

Tragedy has once again struck Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A trio of police officers are dead and a handful more injured after a gunman opened fire at a shopping center in the southern city, according to the Baton Rouge mayor’s office and many other outlets. CNN confirms that cops have shot one suspect, but an investigation is underway to determine whether others were involved. “This is still an active scene,” Kip Holden, the mayor of East Baton Rouge Parish, told network, adding: “They are investigating. Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything. It’s just been one thing after another.” Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola says three officers are injured, though it’s unknown at this time whether those injuries are life-threatening. The shooting took place around 9 a.m. Sunday’s horrific event took place fewer than two weeks after the shooting death of Alton Sterling. The 37-year-old father was killed by Baton Rouge cops outside a store where he was selling homemade CDs and DVDs. Alton Sterling: New Video Emerges of Deadly Louisiana Shooting As depicted above, Sterling’s death was captured on video, with the clip stirring up feelings of outrage and sadness around the country and Internet. In the disturbing piece of footage, Sterling is tackled to the ground by two officers and later held down while one of these officers shoots him multiple times, killing him on the spot. Just one day later, 32-year-old Philando Castile was pulled over for a seemingly routine traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. However, he was also shot and killed in the car while his girlfriend filmed the tragedy on camera; the couple’s young daughter sat in the backseat. Philando Castile: Minnesota Man Shot and Killed By Police, Death Caught on Video These controversial deaths were followed by a shooting in Dallas last week that left five police officers dead and seven officers and two civilians wounded. It took place on Thursday, July 7 at a gathering of Black Lives Matter protesters. Dallas Shooting Kills Multiple Police Officers The victims in today’s awful case were from Baton Rouge Police Department, as well as East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office. “This is an unspeakable and unjustified attack on all of us at a time when we need unity and healing,” Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards says. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones of the victims today. View Slideshow: 18 Celebrities Who Think #BlackLivesMatter

Sloth Selfie Proves There is Good in the World After All

#RealTalk: This can be a challenging time to be a human being. There’s racial tension across the United States. There are unspeakable tragedies taking place on a nearly weekly basis. It can all be very depressing. The photo featured here isn’t about to change any of that. We know this. But it should put a smile on anyone who looks at it… and that can go a long way. The image was snapped by Marcelo Sueth, an adventure tour guide who was on a trail near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last month. And it was on this trail when he happened upon a sloth. Yes, the kind of animal that would make Kristen Bell lose her gorgeous mind . Kristen Bell LOVES Sloths! Sueth snapped some photos of the animal from afar before deciding the sloth seemed pretty comfortable with him. Enter a selfie stick and some good timing and good luck and… presto! Is that not the cutest selfie you’ve ever seen in your entire life?!? ”It was an amazing moment of interaction and exchange of good energy,” Sueth told ABC. To date, the picture has over 2 million views on Instagram, Facebook and Imgur. Sueth told the network that he hopes all this attention to the picture will help spread a love of nature around the world. And we could all use a bit more love in our lives, couldn’t we? Rayne Burse: Black Model Accosted By Racist Neighbor, Records Everything

Rayne Burse is my new favorite person. The aspiring model was taking her dog, Mojito for a walk near her fiance's home, when a woman in a striped shirt with a towel wrapped around her waist started approaching. ” I saw her coming out of her back door,” Burse told Huffington Post . “I was talking with my mom on my phone but her on hold to tell the woman, ‘I’m sorry if I’m trespassing,’ and then move away.” Burse had just moved into the neighborhood, and had never seen Dorrbecker before.   “I think she was pretty racist and she was just mad that I was in her area,” she said of Maria Dorrbecker, 63. “But at the same time, I worried that she might have been just some old woman with dementia or schizophrenia or something.”   The woman started pointing her finger in Burse's face, to the point where Burse had to end the call with her mom and record what was happening. Burse managed to keep her composure while asking Dorrbecker why she was so offended by Burse walking her dog, when she wasn't even on private property. “Because you’re part of south Miami,” Dorrbecker said, threatening to “report” Burse. When Dorrbecker reached for Burse's phone, Burse reacted. “I was taught to respect your elders, but I was trying to deescalate the situation before I turned on the camera, but she shut that down,” she said A scuffle ensued, and Burse gave her dog the command, “Move Mojito” (which is now a trending hashtag) before both women went their separate ways and called 911. When the police arrived, Burse showed the video, it was decided that she was simply defending herself. ““One [cop] asked if I wanted to press charges. At first, I said no, because I wanted to be rid of it. They were like, ‘Are you sure?’” Dorrbecker was ultimately charged with simple battery. “I defended myself,” Burse told Miami New Times . “Don’t try to put your hands on somebody and expect them to react cordially, especially if you were aggressive before that and they were trying constantly to resolve the situation… You’re asking for it at that point.”

President Obama Speaks On Police Killings Of Philando Castile And Alton Sterling [Video]

Barack Obama took a moment after landing in Warsaw, Poland to speak out on the senseless killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile this afternoon…and let American citizens know that killings like these should concern all of us, not just the Black Lives they directly affect: “We have seen tragedies like these too many times. When incidents like this occur, there’s a big chunk of our fellow citizenry that feels as if – because of the color of their skin – they are not being treated the same. And that hurts. And that should trouble all of us. This is not just a black issue. It’s not just a Hispanic issue. It’s an American issue. All fair-minded people should be concerned.” TIME

11 Police Officers Reportedly Shot By Unknown Snipers During Dallas Protests, Resulting In 3 Deaths

11 Police Shot, 4 Dead After Dallas Protests Protesters have taken to the streets in various cities across the US to demonstrate against police brutality, excessive force, and senseless killings in the wake of the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, less than 24 hours apart from one another. Now, just as a protest in Dallas came to a close tonight, rapid-succession gunfire filled the streets and resulted in the injury of 11 officers, causing fatalities for four. Via NBCDFW : Three officers are dead, and at least seven others are injured in downtown Dallas Thursday, Dallas Police Chief David Brown says. The entire statement follows: Tonight it appears that two snipers shot ten police officers from elevated positions during the protest/rally. Three officers are deceased, two are in surgery and three are in critical condition. An intensive search for suspects is currently underway. No suspects are in custody at this time. We ask that any citizen with information regarding the shootings tonight call 214-671-3482. We will provide more information once it is available. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers tonight. DART says one of its officers has been killed, and three others have non-life threatening injuries. The gunshots rang out about 9 p.m. following a protest and rally held over two people killed in police shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota this week. The shootings took place as the rally and march were ending. Scores of police officers arrived downtown following the shooting, which took place near Main and Market streets and a block from the Old Red Courthouse building. Since that was printed, the number shot rose to 11 and death toll rose to 4. The Dallas Police Chief has blamed the incident on two snipers aiming at police, however live Twitter accounts of the action from people on the ground are giving totally different accounts of what is going on. INTERESTING. Twitter has also reportedly dispelled rumors that a protester spotted on the scene with a firearm he has the legal right to carry with him was one of the alleged snipers responsible for the attack. The man in the photos turned himself in, and the status of his apprehension is unknown. However, reports from 24-hour news networks are saying that Dallas authorities are still reporting that they have no suspects in custody. No word on the race or gender of said snipers or any proof/word if they were at all affiliated with the protest. But we know it’s getting VERY real out here… WFAA
