For the past several years, we’ve heard the doom-and-gloom prognostications coming from perma-bear Peter Schiff: The Federal Reserve is the root of all evil. Inflation will be the United States’ undoing. Invest in gold and overseas because the American stock market is toast. Perhaps that’s a legitimate view, but Schiff argues a more libertarian approach to prevent these supposed calamities. He argues for a different way of handling monetary policy , less spending by the federal government and a rethinking of how regulation is handled . Yet, when a political campaign is waged in the halls of Congress by a partisan member against one of his competitors , he turns a blind-eye to the abuses of government power. “You know, I have my own gold company and it bothers me what they’re going to do,” Schiff said to CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report” fill-in host Michelle Caruso-Cabrera on the Sept. 24 broadcast. “I think that companies like, you know, like Goldline, you know that are basically marking up their gold coins 67 percent or whatever – it’s outrageous. I mean, most companies mark-up 2 or 3 percent, which is what I do. These type of companies give the whole industry a bad name. What I’m afraid of is we’re going to have a lot of regulation.” Caruso-Cabrera asked Schiff in these circumstances if it was a case of buyer beware. However, Schiff suggested it was fraudulent for coin companies to charge these prices for what by any measure of the law would be a legal transaction if a consumer chose to purchase coins from such a company. “If there’s fraud, it’s not buyer beware,” he continued. “But what I’m afraid of is I don’t want government regulating the coin industry so that people like me have to raise our prices to cover all the extra cost of regulation.” But assuming Schiff’s assumption were correct, wouldn’t he has a competitor be able to move in on the market and offer the same product for a lower price? Isn’t that how the free market operates? Schiff conceded that point, but complained he was getting beat because he couldn’t afford the advertising. “I mean, I think the free market should ferret out these companies that are grossly overcharging people who don’t know any better. You know, that’s the problem. People haven’t bought gold in so long and see how well it’s doing and get conned by these commercials that are all over television. But most gold companies like mine, we can’t afford to run commercials because we’re not charging that much.” Schiff makes regular appearances on all the cable news networks, with his firm’s logo Euro Pacific Capital on the backdrop and raised more than $3 million for his failed effort to win the Connecticut Republican U.S. Senate nomination. So is it fair to complain about his firm’s inability to market its products, if indeed they’re at lower prices than the competition’s products.

Jonathan Klein’s ‘Pajamas Moment’ Accelerated Alternative Media’s Growth

News consumers of America owe a debt of gratitude to Jonathan Klein. Really. Yesterday, NB’s Noel Sheppard  noted the ignominious end of Klein’s nearly six-year term as head of CNN/US. If there is an example of anyone who has overseen a bigger audience decline and loss of competitive position and survived so long, I don’t know who he or she is. Fox News, which first passed CNN in total viewers in January 2002 (interesting how this basic factoid is not at Fox’s Wiki entry ), now routinely trounces CNN and CNN Headline combined by a factor of 1.5 to 1 or more. On Thursday , Fox’s primetime audience of 574,000 was 75% greater than the CNN pair’s combined total of 329,000. But before he arrived at CNN to do his damage, Klein inadvertently did the nation a service. Klein’s accidental good deed took place during the Rathergate controversy in 2004. The “story” was that President George W. Bush had somehow received favorable treatment as a member of the Texas Air National Guard in the 1970s. A commenter at FreeRepublic questioned the legitimacy of story-related documents he was seeing on a CBS “60 Minutes” segment, and it snowballed from there. Ultimately, Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs reproduced exact replicas of the documents involved in Microsoft Word using technology that could not conceivably have been accessible to the controversy’s players on typewriters existing at the time, proving beyond any reasonable doubt that the crew at “60 Minutes,” including producer Mary Mapes and host Dan Rather, had either been duped or were knowingly promoting falsehoods. In the meantime, a swarm of center-right blogs found a wide range of other evidence poking other holes in the story and questioning the motivations of many who were pushing it. The episode quickly ended the CBS career of Mapes, and eventually led to Rather’s departure from the network. In the midst of all of this, Klein, who worked for CBS from 1982 to 1999 , appeared on Fox’s O’Reilly Factor as a “Former CBS News Executive.” He defended his former employer’s work thusly: It’s an important moment, because you couldn’t have a starker contrast between the multiple layers of checks and balances, and a guy sitting in his living room in his pajamas writing what he thinks. Klein was right of course, but not in the way he thought. The guys in pajamas were right, and CBS, despite its “multiple layers of checks and balances,” was wrong. Klein’s appearance brought further visibility to an already-growing blogosphere, helping to spur further interest in alternative media, thus accelerating its growth. To name just one example: In August 2005, the Media Research Center started NewsBusters.org with the help of Matt Sheffield, who had been running RatherBiased.com. Without doubt, something like NewsBusters would have eventually appeared, but it’s pretty clear that the Rathergate episode, Klein’s arrogant and embarrassing statement, and other blogospheric debunkings of establishment media stories during the 2004 presidential campaign hastened NB’s arrival. There’s also little doubt that what happened in the fall of 2004 inspired thousands of others to try their hands at blogging. Many of them, to Jonathan Klein’s sure chagrin, have since become key alternative media contributors. That’s why today, as I blog (in street clothes), I say to Mr. Klein: “Thanks, big guy. His poll numbers over here may be falling, but the New York Times found a place where Barack Obama is still very popular and bringing the hope: The slum-like “banlieues”outside Paris dominated by Muslim immigrants, in Thursday’s “ Feeling Slighted by France, And Respected by the U.S. ” by France-based reporter Scott Sayare. The residents of this poor, multiracial Paris suburb say they have been abandoned. For 30 years, they say, the French authorities have written off Bondy and neighborhoods like it, treating their inhabitants as terminal delinquents and ignoring their potential. Obama evidently has the French slum vote locked up: Begun in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks as part of an effort to bolster the image of the United States within Muslim communities across the globe, American outreach in these hard neighborhoods — often referred to collectively as the “banlieues,” or suburbs — has grown in scale and visibility since the election of Barack Obama. France is home to five million to six million Muslims, Europe’s largest Muslim population, and the banlieues have long been considered potential incubators for religious extremism. But anti-American sentiment, once pervasive in these neighborhoods, seems to have been all but erased since the election of Mr. Obama, who has proved to be a powerful symbol of hope here and a powerful diplomatic tool. Many suggest the Americans’ warm reception is a measure of these communities’ sense of abandonment. Others say it is the presence of Mr. Obama in the White House. Whatever the case, the United States is now more popular in the banlieues than at any other time in recent memory, say French and American officials. And as the banlieues go, so go the banlieues! In contrast, Times reporters had extremely harsh words for tough-on-crime French President Nicholas Sarkozy , who dared to criticize the violent behavior of the slum residents: Mr. Sarkozy has often taken a ruthless us-against-them attitude…He also struck a conciliatory note, reaching out to the huge swath of French people who seem to fear him, especially in the country’s ethnically and racially mixed suburbs, where he is accused of fueling tensions with his provocative language and an aggressive police presence.

While discussing sex allegations against Bishop Eddie Long on Friday, MSNBC host and gay rights activist Contessa Brewer asked Bishop James Dean Adams: “Long has taken a very strong anti-homosexual stand….Is there always a danger, if you’re taking that sort of stand, that you’re living in a glass house and people are going to be encouraged to throw stones?” Brewer described how “the Southern Poverty Law Center calls Bishop Eddie Long ‘one of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay moment. Long reportedly told his congregation about homosexuals, he said, God says you deserve death.'” The left-wing organization spliced together that comment and other clips of Long’s Sermons on its website . Brewer used Long’s comments to go after Bishop Adams: “I mean, you can’t support that, do you? The saying that homosexuals deserve death?” Adams replied: “No. I don’t say that homosexuals or anybody, for that matter, deserves death.” Brewer continued: “Do you think, in any way, Bishop, this will change the way black churches deal with the issue of homosexuality?” Adams explained: “I disagree with the viewpoint that the church is somehow been purposefully anti-gay. It’s not about anti-gay. It’s just simply anti-sin.” On Tuesday, Brewer warned of “consequences” for senators who opposed the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” In addition to her frequent on-air advocacy for gay rights issues, Brewer was the featured speaker at a Kentucky LGBT fundraiser in July. Here is a full transcript of Brewer’s September 24 interview with Bishop Adams: 12:37PM ET CONTESSA BREWER: Megachurch pastor, Bishop Eddie Long, has promised to use this Sunday’s sermon to explain to his 25,000-member congregation what’s going on with that lurid sex scandal that’s rocked his church this week. Three young men have now accused Long of using jewelry, cars, and cash, and his position as their minister, to lure them into sexual relationships. In a written statement, though, Long denies everything, he says, ‘the charges against me and New Birth,’ the church, ‘are false, but my faith is strong and the truth will emerge.’ I’m joined by Bishop James Dean Adams of St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church in Miami. Whenever there’s a scandal about the shepherd of a flock, it definitely rocks the trust that people have, but what can they do at this point without any kind of proof with his denial of the accusations? JAMES DEAN ADAMS: Well, Contessa, I think that the best thing that all of us can do is allow the process to unfold and the truth to be revealed. It would be a tremendous tragedy if these things were true, but our Christian faith requires us that we are to hope for the best and to look for the best and so that’s the posture that the Christian community is taking. BREWER: What do you make of the fact that he has – Bishop Long has taken a very strong anti-homosexual stand? BREWER: But – but – but in this case, I mean, he is – he’s taking such a strong stand. I mean, you can’t support that, do you? The saying that homosexuals deserve death? ADAMS: No. I don’t say that homosexuals or anybody, for that matter, deserves death. BREWER: Right. Just wanted to be clear about that. ADAMS: That’s the reason Jesus Christ came, not to destroy lives but to save them. BREWER: Okay, so do you think, in any way, Bishop, this will change the way black churches deal with the issue of homosexuality? Rep. Weiner’s Anti-Goldline/Beckophobia Crusade Falls Flat

An organization once headed by former Obama administration official Van Jones tried it. Other so-called grassroots organizations have given it a shot. Now Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., with the power of Congress in tow, has taken his best shot to shut Glenn Beck down. But so far it isn’t really working. On Sept. 23, Weiner called a representative from Santa Monica, Calif.-based Goldline to testify before the Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee about what he deemed to be the firm’s unfair business practices. However, it just so happens that Goldline sponsors Beck and other conservative media personalities. With congressional hearings, you’d expect the media to be all over this, right? Not exactly, at least thus far. The most attention Weiner’s charade could muster was a segment at the end of MSNBC’s bomb-thrower show, “Countdown with Keith Olbermann.” Olbermann asked Weiner on his Sept. 23 broadcast if Goldline was in cahoots with “willing partners like Glenn Beck,” since anyone who suggests gold be a part of someone’s portfolio is up to no good. “The scare, lie, rip-off cycle that you outlined in your opening remarks – is it any wonder that Goldline seeks and finds willing partners in people like Glenn Beck?” Olbermann asked. According to a spokesman from Goldline, out of the 30 to 40 television advertisements the company runs on a daily basis, only one runs during Glenn Beck’s Fox News Channel programming. In fact, Goldline runs regular advertising on CNBC, the sister network to Olbermann’s MSNBC. But Weiner faulted Beck and others, including “angry radio hosts” for suggesting gold should be a part of someone’s financial portfolio. “You know this is where the angry radio host works hand-in-glove with these sellers,” Weiner said. “You know, you see Glenn Beck say, be careful, the economy’s a mess. Deficits, debts, you better invest in gold. Now let’s go to a word from our sponsor.” But Goldline offers a product that even media financial experts advise people to have in their portfolio. Take CNBC’s Jim Cramer, who on his May 17 program explained why gold is important, not necessarily as an investment to make money, but as a hedge against inflation – a point Weiner refuses to concede. “First off, gold hedges you against the eve-of-destruction pessimists,” Cramer said. “It’s a safe haven that tends to go up when everything else goes down. Second, as the commercial says, ‘Central banks are printing money like mad.’ That’s a great reason to own gold. Third no, matter what happens in keeping with the pessimistic zeitgeist, people are going to say what central banks around world are doing is inflationary. Doesn’t matter that it’s done to counter deflation – gold’s the antidote to the chatter. Fourth, there’s not a lot of gold being found.” Nonetheless, Weiner took a few more shots at Beck, which has been a pattern for the New York congressman on the gold issue . He argued that Beck was abusing the public’s trust, even though Beck was conveying a perfectly legitimate view and speaking on the behalf of a legitimate sponsor. “It got so bad that even Fox News said to Glenn Beck, you can’t be a paid sponsor for these guys anymore, because it was just — the line was getting blurred,” Weiner continued. “Now, that’s Fox News’ problem. That’s Glenn Beck’s problem. I think he does have some responsibility to his viewers. You know, it’s odd of me to be saying this, but I want to stand up for Glenn Beck’s viewers in this case.” And Weiner maintained that the laws he is proposing, which are motivating his witch-hunt, wouldn’t even be applicable to Fox News or Beck. “But the laws that we’re proposing obviously don’t impact Fox News,” he continued. “And Glenn Beck can say and do whatever he wants. But I would hope he takes a step back and looks at our study and looks at the testimony today, and realize that his viewers are middle class people who are struggling. He should not be aiding and abetting a rip off.” That begs the question – why is Weiner bringing up Beck in the first place?

Good Morning America’s Jim Sciutto on Friday suggested Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as an example of a human rights “advocate” opposed to the execution of a woman in Virginia. The odd aside came from just one day after the Iranian leader blamed the United States for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Sciutto related the details of Teresa Lewis, who was executed on Thursday for plotting to kill her husband and stepson. The ABC reporter then asserted, ” But advocates, from crime novelist John Grisham, to Supreme Court justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, even to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, questioned whether she deserved the death penalty .” [MP3 audio here .] A transcript of the September 24 segment, which aired at 7:05am, follow: ROBIN ROBERTS: The state of Virginia carried out the death penalty last night in the state’s first execution of a woman in nearly a century. Now, executions aren’t terribly uncommon in Virginia. This is the third one in 2010. But, this particular case is re-igniting the debate over crime and punishment. Jim Sciutto is in Jarrett, Virginia with more on this. Good morning, Jim. JIM SCIUTTO: Robin, good morning. We’re hearing of an harrowing scene inside L block just behind me last night. Eyewitnesses described Lewis as terrified and trembling as she entered the chamber. She turned down a sedative offered to death row inmates. A guard tapping her on the shoulder to calm her as she was put to death. It’s here, inside this cramped death chamber, where Teresa Lewis became the first woman executed in Virginia in 98 years. LARRY TRAYLOR (Virginia Department of Corrections): The execution of Teresa Lewis has been carried out in the manner as described by the laws in the commonwealth of Virginia. SCIUTTO: Just outside, supporters, including her minister of seven years, kept a sad vigil. When you met with her for a final time, did you have a sense that she was ready for this? REVEREND LYNN LITCHFIELD (Lewis’ minister): She resigned herself to this. And she knew for seven years that this was a good possibility. But she didn’t want it. SCIUTTO: Teresa Lewis confessed to a horrible crime. Plotting with her lover and a friend to kill her husband and stepson, to collect on a $250,000 life insurance policy. TERESA LEWIS: I just wish I could take it back. And I’m sorry for all the people I’ve hurt. JIM SCIUTTO: But advocates from crime novelist John Grisham to Supreme Court justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, even to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, questioned whether she deserved the death penalty. She did not pull the trigger. The men who did got life in prison. And, crucially, court-appointed doctors found she has an IQ of just 72, with the moral judgment of a 12 to 14-year-old. RICK WILSON (American University Law School): The practice of the death penalty in the United States is incredibly sporadic. One justice of the Supreme Court said, it’s almost like being hit by lightning. SCIUTTO: For the victims’ families, it is not random at all. But just punishment for murder. CATHY LEWIS (victim’s daughter): A lot of people are not taking into consideration that it was my father and my brother that paid the ultimate price.

An Open Letter to President Obama

Mr. President, I write this letter as a patriot, a taxpayer, a lifelong resident and as concerned citizen of what I consider to be the greatest nation ever known to man, the United States of America. I am Caucasian, so let’s get the racial aspect out of the way to start with.  This letter has nothing to do with your race. I lived through the cruelty of Jim Crow and segregation and learned early on in my life that the color of my skin does not make me better or worse than any other man. We all remember Martin Luther King, Jr.’s statement about judging people, not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character, and I believe that with all my heart. I believe that America is an exceptional country.  We have been liberator, benefactor and leader of the free world for centuries.  America is an example of what can be achieved by free people living under the free enterprise system. We have led the world in technology, industry, science and medicine for a long time. Our capitalist system guarantees that those who explore new worlds and bring us new products and better techniques are amply rewarded for their efforts, and this is as it should be. A person who is the first one to get there and the last one to leave, who burns the midnight oil and never gives up until they realize their goals, are a boon to humankind.  They’re the ones who discover new cures, start new industries and create jobs. These people deserve to be rewarded for their hard work and for the products and services they bring to make life better for all mankind. Mr. President, it is my personal opinion that you want to take the well-earned rewards of these people and give it to those who have done nothing to deserve them. It’s really redistribution of wealth, and it’s nothing new. It’s been tried many places before and it has miserably failed in every one of them.  It’s called socialism. Am I calling you a socialist?  Yes, I am.  I firmly believe that you are a socialist and a globalist, and that you think America should have a comeuppance and have our playing field leveled to match those of other countries not as industrious or as innovative as we are. Mr. President, how can you support the building of a mosque in the very same area where Islamic radicals murdered so many Americans? Just who’s side are you on? Am I accusing you of being a Muslim?  No I’m not, but the jury is still out a little bit on that subject in my mind, because many times your sympathies seem to lean in that direction.  You need to watch who you bow to Mr. President. You have betrayed a whole generation of African-Americans who voted for you because they really believed all that junk about “hope and change,” they really thought you were going to do something great and the only thing you’ve done is to make their jobs disappear and their health insurance go up. You and your party have corrupted duly elected officials in an effort to get your legislative agenda passed.  Remember the “Louisiana Purchase” and the “Cornhusker Kickback,” and that’s just a couple we know about, but you bought off a bunch of congressmen and senators, knowing that you were going against the will of the majority of Americans, because you think that you and your arrogant friends know more about what’s good for America than the citizens your disastrous actions effect. Am I accusing you of being an elitist?  You bet. I don’t believe you take the Islamic threat to America nearly as seriously as you should. You use semantics like “Overseas Contingency Operation” and “Man Caused Disasters” to soften your rhetoric toward people who would like nothing better than decapitate the entire population of America. And Mr. President, if you’d really like to know the kind of warriors who are fighting the “Overseas Contingency Operation,” and you would like to really know about what kind of enemies they’re fighting, you should read a book called Lone Survivor by a brave, young Navy Seal named Marcus Lutrell who went to hell and back for his country, and is still a dedicated patriot.  I think you’d find it enlightening, Mr. President and after you finish it would you pass it on to Janet Napolitano?  And by the way, tell her that my invitation to take her to Iraq and show her some “Man Caused Disasters” is still open. Am I calling you naïve?  Absolutely. You seem to think that America has an endless supply of tax dollars for you to waste and give away, and the debt you’ve piled up could well bankrupt the greatest nation on earth. Am I calling you a failure, Mr. President? With all due respect that’s exactly what I’m doing.
