Jay Leno: ‘Obama Is 49, Which Is Eight Points Higher Than His Approval Rating’

Comedian Jay Leno on Wednesday wished President Obama a Happy Birthday by making fun of him in the opening monologue of NBC’s “Tonight Show.”  “We want to start off by saying Happy Birthday to President Barack Obama,” Leno teased. “He is 49, which is eight points higher than his approval rating.” As “Tonight Show” viewers know, these jokes always come in threes (video follows with transcript): JAY LENO: Welcome to the “Tonight Show,” and we want to start off by saying Happy Birthday to President Barack Obama. He is… [Cheers and applause] LENO: He is 49, which is eight points higher than his approval rating. Wow. [Laughter] LENO: If you would like to get him a a gift, he’s registered at Bed, Bath and Blame it on Bush. That’s the store. [Laughter and applause] LENO: What, did you see the cake they had for him? They had a huge cake. A little different than most birthday parties. What he did was he didn’t blow out the candles, he just taxed them until they finally gave up and went out on their own. Delicious! Absolutely delicious.

CNN’s Rick Sanchez: Obsessed With Fox News, Beck, and Limbaugh

CNN anchor Rick Sanchez revisited his vendetta against Fox News, Glenn Beck, and Rush Limbaugh on Thursday’s Rick’s List. Sanchez brought on outgoing Representative Bob Inglis, who lost a primary challenge to a Tea Party-backed Republican candidate, and when he harped about “flamethrowers” on TV and radio, the anchor pressed him on whether he meant the two radio hosts and his network’s competitor . Sanchez interviewed Rep. Inglis just before the top of the 4 pm Eastern hour. He introduced the politician by emphasizing the South Carolina Republican’s overall conservative record and his recent defeat in the primary: ” My next guest is a conservative firebrand . He is a veteran conservative congressman. In fact, he’s maintained a 93 percent conservative voting record….Pro-choice liberals have called him a ‘zero.’… He was a Ronald Reagan Republican, if there ever one was, and suddenly, he wakes up one day, and he simply is not conservative enough, not for South Carolina Republicans . He lost the recent primary. No- he got killed in the recent primary, 29-71 [percent].” However, what the CNN anchor left out is how Inglis was one of the few House Republicans who voted for a 2007 Democratic-sponsored resolution opposing the troop surge in Iraq , and has criticized skeptics of man-made global warming, as well as opposed offshore drilling . Most prominently, he voted for the 2008 bailout of the financial system . The Republican’s primary opponent used these votes and stances to defeat him. Sanchez first asked the outgoing congressman about an excerpt from his recent interview with the left-wing magazine Mother Jones, where he highlighted a constituent’s conspiracy theory about President Obama: SANCHEZ: [reading from the constituent’s letter] ‘Bob, what don’t you get? Barack Obama is a socialist, communist, Marxist, who wants to destroy the American economy so that he can take over as dictator. Health care is part of that, and he wants to open up the Mexican border and turn the U.S. into a Muslim nation .’…When I read that, I was just struck by the language. You vouch for that, right? That- who was telling you that? Later in the interview, Rep. Inglis criticized “this scapegoating that’s keeping us from the solutions” to issues like Social Security and Medicare. The anchor asked him to explain what he meant and borrowed from a recent argument by CNN contributor John Avlon , that the Tea Party would reject former President Reagan: “What do you mean, ‘scapegoating’? Where is this coming from? Because I said this or asked this of one of my guests yesterday- you know, if Ronald Reagan were running today, he would likely be in the same boat you’re in .” Sanchez pounced when the South Carolina congressman placed the blame on conservative media and grassroots activists, specifically ” Beck, Limbaugh, and the Tea Party wing ,” and took the opportunity to ask about his other favorite target, Fox News: INGLIS: I think that’s true, really. I mean, Reagan would have had a hard time on Tuesday, the 22nd of June, in the Fourth District of South Carolina, because he’s too optimistic. You know, he’s always- morning in America, the best days are still ahead. Way too many of these hot microphones on TV and radio are telling us that- no, our- the best days are behind us. It’s all going to pot. We’re done for, and way too many people are believing that stuff. I mean, the people that sell that are making millions off their books . SANCHEZ: Well, that’s interesting…. Here’s another quote. This is you on outside influences in the Republican Party. It’s what you were just getting at. You say, ‘It’s hard for Republicans in Congress to summon the courage to say no to Beck, Limbaugh, and the Tea Party wing.’ Amplify that thought process, if you would, for us, sir. INGLIS: Well, it’s very important that we basically say to these hot microphones, put down those flame-throwers. Stop running people- forcing people to this cliff that you want us to go over like lemmings. What we need to do to is say to them, stop- America’s best days are not behind us. They are in front of us, if we realize that we’re in this together, and we can solve these challenges of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security. That’s where the big dollars are. That’s the crisis we’re facing. But, if we come together, we can actually solve that. It won’t be a 100 percent Republican solution. It won’t be a 100 percent Democrat solution, but it’s got to be an American solution that gets us to balance. So, but what we’re wasting time with is scapegoats. SANCHEZ: It almost you sounds like you’re saying that honorable people in the Republican Party are allowing themselves to be led, rather than leading. INGLIS: Well, I think there’s a big fear of these people with the hot microphones, because they have got powerful flamethrowers, and they throw that flame at you, and they say, get moving, and they get the crowd moving, and, meanwhile, you stop- SANCHEZ: You’re talking about Beck and Limbaugh and people like that? INGLIS: The people that make millions by selling soap and by selling books- SANCHEZ: Fox News? INGLIS: And by selling fear. SANCHEZ: Fox News? INGLIS: Well, they’re the competitor for you. But the idea here is to- SANCHEZ: Well, no. Look, I don’t care . I- I’m asking. I mean, you’re- I don’t know what it’s like to be a Republican congressman getting so much heat from what I believed was my side of the aisle, that it makes me start to wonder if people are pushing me in a direction I don’t want to go to. You’re in a unique position to tell his story to Americans, so I- you know, I’m not putting words in your mouth. I just know who are the people who drive that message out there, and I know that it’s Beck, and I know that it’s Limbaugh, and I know, that in many ways, you could argue it’s Fox News. Is it- do you feel it’s that way? INGLIS: Well, I think that there are a lot of people that are making a lot of money off of selling fear at this point. And there are networks that do that. There are individual talk show hosts that do that, and the sad thing is that an awful lot of Americans are running in fear in front of those folks, and especially, politicians are running in fear in front of those folks. But, really, if you’re going to lead, you need to face those hot microphones, and you need to say, put down the flame-throwers. We’re going to talk facts. The fact is, the President was born in America. The fact is, he is not a socialist. Now, let’s get rid of those non-sensical kind of commentaries and get to the real issues, which are, how do you cope with Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid? How do you put those on solid footing? On August 2, the CNN anchor hinted that Fox News wasn’t a legitimate news organization after the outlet received a front-row seat at White House press briefings. He did the same on the September 21, 2009 edition of his program.  Earlier that year, on April 8, Sanchez blamed Fox News and “right-wing radio” for the murder of three police officers in Pittsburgh. The anchor has also specifically targeted Beck and Limbaugh on a few occasions. Three weeks earlier, on July 14, Sanchez and CNN contributor Roland Martin slammed the two and their listeners : ” Well, unfortunately, there’s a lot of people in this country that look at legitimate news organizations like The Washington Post and scoff, and actually think that Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are legitimate news organizations .” Five days before that, the CNN personality belittled conservative talks show hosts as he made a plausible reference to Limbaugh and Sean Hannity: ” The people who are really leading the charge in this country are the guys on the radio and- many of which don’t even have a college degree .” Most egregiously, he had to apologize in October 2009 after reading a dubious quote attributed to Limbaugh.

Keith Olbermann Out At Sunday Night Football

How many Americans refused to watch Sunday Night Football in recent years as a result of Keith Olbermann’s involvement? That’s certainly a question the folks at NBC likely have asked themselves since inviting the highly partisan and divisive “Countdown” host to be a part of the festivities associated with NFL football on Sunday evenings. With this in mind, a highly respected sports website announced Thursday that Olbermann will no longer be involved in NBC’s “Football Night in America.”  As reported by SportsByBrooks.com (h/t Hot Air headlines ): I’m told that NBC News officials requested the move, citing Olbermann’s weekday commitment to MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann. During the 2009 NFL season, Olbermann periodically did not appear on Friday editions of Countdown. Network television sources confirmed to me that Olbermann’s departure from FNIA was not due to any conflict with cast or production crew members. I was also given no indication that Olbermann’s politics had anything to do with the move. Exit questions:  Do you believe that Olbermann’s departure from this program had nothing to do with his politics?  Are you more likely to watch Sunday night football now that Olbermann is no longer involved? Yes, those were both rhetorical questions, but I couldn’t resist.

George Stephanopoulos’s Wife On CNN: ‘Is Monogamy Killing Your Marriage?’

“Tonight – is monogamy killing marriage? If you let your spouse stray, will they stay? Rethinking wedded bliss in the 21st century.” Believe it or not, that’s how “Larry King Live” began on CNN Tuesday. Filling in for King was Ali Wentworth, comedienne, actress, and wife of ABC’s George Stephanopoulos who in February did a striptease on the set of “Good Morning America” for her husband’s 49th birthday. The topic of discussion Tuesday: “Should couples have open relationships and disclose affairs? Could letting your man sleep with another woman actually help your relationship?” In case you were wondering, the following aired at 9PM EDT (video follows with transcript and commentary): ALI WENTWORTH, GUEST HOST: Tonight – is monogamy killing marriage? If you let your spouse stray, will they stay? Rethinking wedded bliss in the 21st century. Then sharks in the water. One attacks and shreds the arm of a swimmer in Florida. Great whites are spotted off the coast of Cape Cod. They’re lurking, look out. Next, on LARRY KING LIVE. Good evening, I’m Ali Wentworth sitting in for Larry. He’s on vacation. I’m very excited about this show tonight because it’s two of my biggest fears. A great white shark attacking me or my husband cheating. Now if you’ve ever been in a relationship you’ll want to stay right here because we are talking about monogamy. It’s been a hot topic on CNN.com all day. Should couples have open relationships and disclose affairs? Could letting your man sleep with another woman actually help your relationship? Well, that’s what we’re going to ask our guests tonight. Bethenny Frankel is here. She’s a star of Bravo’s “Bethenny Getting Married.” She tied the knot in March. Congratulations. BETHENNY FRANKEL, ACTRESS, BRAVO’S “BETHENNY GETTING MARRIED”: Thank you. WENTWORTH: Holly Hill is the author of “Sugarbabe.” She says women should negotiate infidelity with their husbands. And Sarah Symonds is an author and infidelity analyst. Hello, women, and welcome to a hot topic. Infidelity. I want to — I want to first ask, have any of you been cheated on? FRANKEL: Yes. I was cheated on. His — he had a girlfriend while he was — well, he was actually sleeping with her. I was his girlfriend. And she called me in the middle of the night at about 2:00 in the morning and said, can I speak to Michael? I guess he’s going to be listening. Hi, Michael. Hi, can I speak to Michael, and I said, who is this? And she said, I’m his girlfriend. And we hung up the phone and I waited two hours and I star 69’d her so I can call her back and get all the details. WENTWORTH: And she gave you all the details? FRANKEL: And she gave me the details. You need the details. WENTWORTH: Well, you always need the details. Now, Holly — Holly Hill author of “Sugarbabe,” you actually think that’s OK. You think that if you negotiate fidelity with your spouse or lover that actually makes for a long and successful relationship. Am I right? HOLLY HILL, SAYS WOMEN SHOULD LET MEN CHEAT: Yes. Absolutely. And those details that we talk about, if you’re meeting the women that your partner is being with, you’re not building her up to be some kind of supermodel in your head. And we always want to know the details. And the best way to get the details is ask her out for coffee and be adult about what is a very educated and natural thing to be doing. FRANKEL: See, I think that was a low point in my relationship, in my life to be talking to that girl. It really had nothing to do with her. I was in the wrong relationship because I was with someone who was cheating. And I think that negotiating within your relationship about being allowed to cheat is absurd. WENTWORTH: You know, Holly, it’s one of the things that I — I’m married. And one of the things that I think of in my marriage is that, you know, I can go to my girlfriends for emotional support or my shrink, and there are other venues where I can sort of get what I want. But I feel that marriage, the one thing I have with my husband, which is sacred, is a sexual physical relationship. Otherwise, why be married? HILL: I guess the only reason it’s sacred is because it’s — there’s old-fashioned rules that we’re obeying. And if you want to have a lifetime relationship with someone — which is what we all want — it’s about negotiating things within their nature and their biology. WENTWORTH: Now, Sarah, you say that — you started a fantastic Web site, MistressesAnonymous. But you’re not saying that that’s a good thing. This is really a support group for a lot of women that have been brokenhearted because they had an affair with a married man or wanted to be with a married man. Am I right? SARAH SYMONDS, AUTHOR & INFIDELITY ANALYST: Absolutely. And first of all, hi, Ali, thanks for having me on. Hi, ladies. I can absolutely resonate with Holly, I’ve been through certain, you know, similar experiences that she has. But I have to say, if you are negotiating with somebody you probably are in the wrong relationship. Anything that needs that much negotiation probably isn’t right and you should get out of it. And that’s who my Web site is about, that’s what my support group is about. It’s called MistressesAnonymous, which is like Alcoholics Anonymous. But in my group we can drink, and trust me, you need to. It’s, you know, a 12-step program. And literally I help women get out of their toxic affairs with married men, with unavailable men, with bad boys. It’s a phenomenon that’s going over America. You know women are attracting to these wrong guys. And I hear from women every single day. It’s unbelievable. WENTWORTH: Now I want to sort of open this debate up to all three of you, which is that a lot of people say, men and women clearly are different, and we have different needs and men really biologically, physically, their urge is to spread their seed throughout the land, and ours is to kind of, you know, incubate. And when you put that in its very kind of specific scientific DNA kind of way, do we allow men because it is their physical urge to go out and have at it? FRANKEL: I think women — first of all, men are sleeping with the women. And I mean, speaking of the sharks that are going to be on the show tonight, there are a lot of women going out and preying on men. So I think it’s equal. I think a lot of women have a big sexual appetite. So, beyond the television shows, movies, music, trash novels, and magazines encouraging infidelity, a cable news network not only feels this is an appropriate subject, but also at 9PM. With all this publicizing of extra-marital relationships, how do couples manage to stay together AND raise children that honor commitment and vows? Seems to be more and more impossible, doesn’t it?  If you can take more of this, the full transcript is available here .

Bill Press Mocks Southern Senator with Banjo Music; Suggests ‘Taking Citizenship Away from People Born in Alabama’

Ah yes – liberalism, or as its recent branding has labeled it, progressivism, is the most open-minded and culturally sensitive place to be on the ideological spectrum. Those who subscribe to those beliefs are far more enlightened and far more able to respect those from all over the globe, or least all over the United States, right? Not the case with liberal talk show host Bill Press. On his Aug. 4 program, Press launched into a long-winded rant about a handful of U.S. Senators who question the interpretation of the 14 th Amendment , which allows for so-called “anchor babies” to provide a way for some illegal immigrants to achieve legal status, despite having broken the law by entering the United States. Press took issue with Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who suggested the 14 th Amendment is being abused and wasn’t what was intended by the original authors of it. But he didn’t just disagree with him for his stance. Instead, he took to mocking his southern accent, playing to a stereotype of people from the South. “You know the only thing we’re missing with that are the banjos, you know,” Press said. “I mean – yeah, Jeff Sessions. I mean give me a freaking break. [ In faux southern accent with banjo music playing ] You know our founding fathers didn’t know them jet skis – they got them jet skis in Tijuana. They do, they just zip up the coast and have their baby on the beach in La Hoya, La Joya, La Jolla and then they back to Tijuana with a little baby American. God darn if Thomas Jefferson had only know’d that we would have been different.” Press went on to show his audacity was boundless and called critics of the way the 14 th Amendment has been used as “mean-spirited.” Press framed the entire debate in a manner that made it seem like legislators were taking their concerns over illegal immigration out on children. “Where do we get these people from?” Press continued. “You know, unfreaking believable. Look this is such a stupid thing. Number one, it’s just – look, it’s so mean-spirited, right? Yeah, OK – we’re going to take it out on the kids. Yeah, we’re going to get even with those illegal immigrants. We’re going to get even with anybody that came here to try to improve their life and do better for their family. Yeah, we’re going to take it out on their kids and throw those little buggers back across the boarder.” But he didn’t stop there with the mocking Sessions. Later in his broadcast, Press launched into another anti-Sessions screed with the same theatrics. [ With faux southern accent with banjo music playing ] “Ah yeah, did Thomas Jefferson know ‘bout dem UFOs?” Press said. “Man, those aliens coming here from outer space, popping out a baby and then hopping in their spaceship and goin’ home. What’s this world coming to? I’m tellin’ ya, if James Madison know’d that he would’ve done different.” And to end his bizarre high-minded, left-of-center condescending anti-Alabama rant, this wizard of smart suggested maybe we should revoke citizenship from Alabamians. “You know, how about we just take citizenship away from people born in Alabama ?” Press said. “That’d be a good start. Just kidding, Alabamans – well, yeah maybe [laughter]. Alright, there we go, yes indeed.” One can only ask what is next for Press. Will he mock someone of another ethnicity which he disagrees with a stereotype? It is hard to imagine a conservative talker pulling such a feat off without some sort of pushback from Press and his ilk.

Tribune Co. Chief Innovation Officer Develops Newscast Sans Anchors or Reporters

Remember Lee Abrams , the eccentric (some would say nutty) Chief Innovation Officer of the Tribune Company best known for writing bizarre stream of conciousness memos that sound like the author is on an acid trip? Well, he and his memos are back to promote the launch of a new newscast at KIAH Channel 39 in Houston which will be notable for its lack of anchors or reporters. This development comes on the heels of the utter failure of another Abrams project launched with much enthusiasm last year at WSFL-TV in South Florida, The Morning Show. The sad fate of that show was described in a memo yesterday sent out to the staff by publisher Howard Greenberg of the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel which runs that station: Earlier this morning, WSFL-TV announced the cancellation of The Morning Show, with today being the last broadcast. Launched on April 13, 2009, the program was designed to provide the competitive South Florida market with a fresh take on morning news. We had high hopes for the program, and significant effort from throughout the company went into developing the show. While we’re proud of what we accomplished in a short period of time, the audience didn’t build the way we had anticipated, and we had to make the difficult decision to end production. Every effort is being made to help affected employees with this transition, including assisting them in exploring placement within our organization and at other Tribune properties. We’re also helping facilitate the production of resume tapes and other material for departing staff members. Bob Norman of the Daily Pulp makes an observation about what the real problem with that show was: The problem, of course, was that there wasn’t really anything new about it all — it was a traditional morning show at its core, only with younger hosts and an emphasis on the show’s website that never really created any buzz or took off.  However, at the time of the launch of The Morning Show, Abrams waxed enthusiastic about it in this memo : Very blown away by the morning show! Not only the show, but the spirit and attitude of EVERYONE involved. If we can get 10 percent of this level of afdi, energy and willingness to reinvent at our other stations, we’ll truly revolutionize TV. There were quite a few nitpiks that I’ll review today with the group, but overall, they are soooo local and soooo refreshingly and NOTICEABLY different from EVERYone else. The other stations look disconnected, TOO professional and slick and “nationalized” in comparison, and I think this show is on track to hit its psychographic head on. Watched the competition and it was hilariously dated–Stiff, evil looking Ivory Tower news people wearing 1987 Reagan era suits, taking “news speak” with blue and silver everywhere. As organic and real as a chunk of linoleum. The CONTENT was generally fine, but undermined by a dated-playbook presentation. They know their place on the intellectual/culture scale—and nail it well. Undettered by that massive flop, Abrams has gone on to apply his Chief Innovation Officer skills to a new project in Houston as described by David Barron of the Houston Chronicle: Channel 39 will end its traditional newscasts by this fall to launch a new format called NewsFix, which discards on-camera anchors and reporters and focuses on natural sound and video to tell stories. KIAH employees were informed Thursday about the changes, which apparently involve reassigning anchors and reporters to new, off-camera duties and signal a sharp reversal from the station’s recent advertising campaign focusing on its lead anchor, Mia Gradney. Somehow I don’t think that idea of ditching on-air anchors and reporters was exactly popular with the staff. One can only imagine the mood in the KIAH newsroom when that announcement was made.  Roger Bare, Channel 39’s general manager, said KIAH will be the pilot program for Tribune Broadcasting’s NewsFix, which is expected to launch in late September or early October. “The core concept is to focus more on storytelling by allowing those in the story to tell the story and to place video and audio at the center of all that we do,” Bare said, repeating a sentence included in a memo given to employees. One Channel 39 employee, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak on the station’s behalf, said employees were told that the newscast would feature fast-paced stories, added special effects and a minimum of on-camera appearances by reporters or anchors. “It’s not going to be as much of a newscast as a collection of stories that will roll into each other,” the employee said. “There will be natural sound, and you won’t see the reporters. “It will be news for people who don’t watch news, which sounds a lot like opening a bar for people who don’t drink.” And who was the “genius” behind this innovation? None other than the Chief Innovation Officer: NewsFix is the brainchild of Lee Abrams , the former radio executive who is Tribune Co.’s chief innovation officer. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Abrams said the company wants to “bring us into the 21st century in terms of what (viewers) see and hear. It’s elevating us and escaping the grip of the 1970s television playbook that seems to be what every station in America is addicted to.” So having failed with a newscast in Florida, Abrams is rewarded by being allowed to apply his “innovative” ideas to another newscast in Texas. Perhaps with his next project, Abrams will launch a newscast without news. Oops! That’s already been done. I think it is called MSNBC. Looking forward to more entertaining Lee Abrams memos!

Maddow Tells Letterman ‘Scaring White People Is Good Politics’ For Conservatives

Rachel Maddow on Tuesday told David Letterman that scaring white people is good politics for conservatives. After the host of CBS’s “Late Show” asked his perilously biased guest about the Andrew Breitbart-Shirley Sherrod affair, the MSNBCer predictably pointed her accusatory finger at Fox News and everybody on the right.  “The idea is you sort of rile up the white base to be afraid of an other, to be afraid of the scary immigrants or scary black people,” Maddow said. “Somebody coming to take what is white people’s rightful property,” she continued. “And you get them riled up so they feel like they need to vote in self-defense, and they vote for conservative candidates because of that fear” (video follows with partial transcript and commentary, h/t TVNewser ): RACHEL MADDOW: They I think bear a lot of responsibility, and I think that with Fox in particular it’s part of a pattern. They keep running these stories about for lack of a better phrase scary black people, about scary black people at the USDA discriminating against white farmers and scary black people stopping white people from voting and scary black people getting like stealing the election the whole ACORN scandal. There’s this theme… DAVID LETTERMAN: Oh, that’s right. This guy has done it before. MADDOW: It was the ACORN like guy supposedly dressed up as a pimp who wasn’t dressed up as a pimp. LETTERMAN: So, in, in, in the collective ideology of Fox and others, to what end? What is the objective of this sort of nonsense? MADDOW: Scaring white people is good politics on the conservative side of the spectrum, and it always has been. The idea is you sort of rile up the white base to be afraid of an other, to be afraid of the scary immigrants or scary black people. Somebody coming to take what is white people’s rightful property. Or rights. And you get them riled up so they feel like they need to vote in self-defense, and they vote for conservative candidates because of that fear. I mean we’ve been doing it for decades. LETTERMAN: Right, decades. I keep thinking that okay it started 100 years ago and maybe a thousand years ago when each ensuing decade, it should be a little less, a little less, a little less. We should be smarter. Our kids should be smarter. Their kids should be smarter. But yet, these people are continuing to fan this flame and excuse me for mixing metaphors here that is cancer. I mean leave it alone. Let it go away. It’s not right. Why, there are other problems now that need to be addressed. ( Applause ) MADDOW: I think that, I mean, I think you’re totally right. It should get better. And the way it’s going to get better is not by slime balls being less slimy. There’s always going to be Breitbarts and Fox Newses. That’s going to happen. What’s different now is actually CNN, CNN spent the whole day the day that day broke debunking it. They got Shirley Sherrod on the air. They talked about what she was really saying. They showed how it was edited together wrongly. MSNBC did the same thing. But it was one of these things where actually I think Breitbart and Fox came off worse for having done that. And so maybe that’s the best, that’s the best antidote is just by sheer mockery of the people who do it. LETTERMAN: And then in response, Bill O’Reilly, who has been on this show many times and I have a theory about Bill O’Reilly, smart guy. And I think he knows better than what he’s doing, but he’s just found a place to, you know, make a living. And if, if you needed a, he’d be a weatherman if the money was right or he’d do sports if the money was right. He’s just doing this because that’s where the money is. I don’t think you can be as smart as he is and actually believe what he believes. Isn’t it wonderful that America has people like Maddow and Letterman around to propagandize the public?  What would we do without them?

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough Ridicules ‘My Party,’ Lectures GOP on Immigration

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough on Wednesday again decided to slam the Republican Party (Scarborough is a former-GOP Congressman). He chided, “My party. What happened to my party?” Democrat Co-host Mika Brzezinski made sure to notify Scarborough that, “Your party is over!” Scarborough was astounded that some Senate Republicans are calling for hearings on the 14th Amendment regarding birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants. Instead of examining the indictment or even giving a conservative viewpoint, Scarborough denounced his colleagues saying, “Instead of tearing up the Constitution of the United States, why don’t we just enforce the immigration laws that are on the books right now?” Scarborough based his reaction on a false conclusion that the Republicans’ intention is to repeal the 14th Amendment, which is not even possible for them to do on their own. Yet, Scarborough screamed, “They are going to hold hearings on getting rid of the 14th Amendment.” Scarborough seemed to be ignoring the stated goals of the GOP senators, examining the amendment and determining its intent. Laying out this question: Whether or not someone who happens to be born in this country to parents who are not citizens, or in this country legally, should be automatically granted citizenship and all the benefits that come with citizenship? Nevertheless, Scarborough mocked the idea alleging, “We are going to ban Santa Claus next.” Scarborough is developing an appetite for attacking Republicans. For example, the time he blamed Republicans for the continued war in Afghanistan , or the time he called Republicans “Genuinely Stupid” for criticizing Obama’s oil spill response or perhaps the time he cited that Arizona’s immigration law was “Un-American.” This attempt is just another example of Scarborough, the show’s “voice of the right,” taking every opportunity to belittle his “party.”

MSNBC’s Cenk Uygur Assails Hateful Conservatives Who Opposed Women and Blacks

MSNBC News Live guest host Cenk Uygur on Wednesday railed against opposition to gay marriage, asserting that conservatives ” fought against women’s rights and they lost. They fought against civil rights for blacks and they lost .” He also touted the supposed moral superiority of liberals, lecturing, “This country is fundamentally progressive.” [ MP3 audio here.] To bolster this case, Uygur quoted Marting Luther King: “‘Cause as a very smart man once said in the middle of another civil rights battle, ‘The arc of history bends towards justice.'” Yet, liberals hardly have a spotless record when it comes to human rights. In 1972, Jane Fonda famously parroted communist propaganda while sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. Many progressives have also fawned over the communist murderer Che Guevara . Uygur derided, “And at some point, some conservatives will pretend they were never against [gay marriage] and that they’ve always been for equality for all…We know better. But, all of that will be irrelevant, because in the end there’s only one thing this country does with conservative ideas when they fight against progress, they throw them in the trash bin of history.” Here, Uygur, the host of the liberal radio show The Young Turks , was just being historically sloppy. Ronald Reagan made Martin Luther King’s birthday a holiday. When the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act came up for a vote, a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats supported the bill. (Republicans were in favor 138 to 34. Democrats supported it 152-96.) Finally, it was Lincoln and later the Radical Republicans who made the progress for civil rights in the 19 th century. A transcript of the August 4 segment, which aired at 3:07pm EDT, follows: CENK UYGUR: Now, look, let’s go to “My Take.” Will there be gay marriage all across the country one day? Of course there will. Hear me now. Quote me later. It is inevitable. ‘Cause as a very smart man once said in the middle of another civil rights battle, “The arc of history bends towards justice.” This country is fundamentally progressive. When our founding fathers started a revolution for the idea of self-rule and democracy, it was arguably the single most progressive act in history. Conservatives fought against women’s rights and they lost. They fought against civil rights for blacks and they lost . They’re fighting against gay rights and they will lose, because this country believes in progress and human rights. That is what it’s absolutely based on. So, we will go through this drama for some time more, but the final act is clear. And then looking back many years from now, Americans will shake their heads and say how could people have possibly thought that? As they say now about people who fought against integration and a woman’s right to vote. How could they have possibly thought that? And at some point, some conservatives will pretend they were never against it and that they’ve always been for equality for all. And some of them might even pretend to be fans of famous gay rights crusaders like Harvey Milk as some now pretend to be big fans of Martin Luther King. We know better, but all of that will be irrelevant, because in the end there’s only one thing that this country does with conservative ideas when they fight against progress, they throw them in the trash bin of history .
