Reuters Editor Shrieks: Tax ‘Lucky Sperm Club’ to Break ‘Landed Gentry’

For Chrystia Freeland, the thought of only taxing wealthy estates 35 percent is “destructive to the fabric of America.” The Reuters global editor-at-large went on a ear-piercing tear this afternoon on MSNBC's “Dylan Ratigan Show,” stoking the flames of class warfare. “[The wealthy] were just born–it's the lucky sperm club, right?” screeched Freeland. “I don't think American wealth should be determined by that.” Politics Daily contributor Matt Lewis, for his part, tried to maintain a civil discourse, but Freeland repeatedly interrupted him to interject her inflammatory rhetoric. “I thought the philosophy was against a landed gentry,” asserted an indignant Freeland. “I thought the philosophy was against an aristocracy. I thought the American way was you build it yourself and everyone was born equal.” [Video embedded after page break.] read more

Time Editor Says Tea Party Not Named ‘Person of the Year’ Because They’re Not a Person

Time's managing editor Richard Stengel appeared on MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports, on Thursday, to promote his magazine's Person of the Year issue and after he cited the reasons for selecting Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, he explained the reason the Tea Party didn't was because they were a group. After host Andrea Mitchell asked him to explain his rationale for not picking the other runners-up, Stengel lamely told her he disqualified the Tea Party because he's “biased in favor of putting a single person on the cover.”

Ed Schultz Accuses Palin of ‘Pathetic Political Grandstanding’ in Haiti Trip — But Has He Ever Gone?

On MSNBC Friday night, Ed Schultz proclaimed on his show that Sarah Palin's a phony for touring Haiti now, that the “earthquake happened 11 months ago” and now she's just doing it to plug her new book and reality show. (Ed seems to have missed the recent cholera outbreak. Who needs the Couric question about what newspapers he reads?) Since liberals usually equate traveling to desperate spots of global poverty with compassion, let's ask this question: When has Ed Schultz been to Haiti? A review of transcripts on Nexis and Google searches provide no shred of evidence that Schultz has cared enough to visit. But there he was in his New York studio — the one he may have threatened to burn down for leaving him out of network promos — trashing Palin as insincere at the top of his show: “The next stop on Sarah Palin’s grandstanding tour is Haiti.

ABC Poll Finds Health Care Law Is Massively Unpopular, Network Offers Scant Coverage

A December 13 ABC News/Washington Post poll found Barack Obama's health law at a new low in popularity, but Monday's World News and Tuesday's Good Morning America offered only meager coverage of the development. Released the same day a Virginia judge ruled part of ObamaCare to be unconstitutional, the only mention on Monday came when Jake Tapper briefly highlighted the findings. At the end of a segment on the court ruling, he explained, “And, Diane, an ABC News/Washington Post poll out today shows the health care law at its lowest level of popularity ever. Just 43 percent support with 52 percent opposition, just weeks away from the Republican House taking office.” read more

Talking Ants-on-Crucifix Art, NYT’s Frank Rich Grieves ‘Homophobia Is at Most a Misdemeanor’ in D.C.

Frank Rich’s Sunday column for the New York Times, “ Gay Bashing at the Smithsonian ,” on the removal of a video from the “Hide/Seek” show of gay artists sponsored by the federally funded museum, was even more melodramatically offended (and offensive to Christian conservatives) than Arts critic Holland Cotter’s Saturday anguish . After a video that included an 11-second clip of ants crawling over a crucifix

Bloomberg News ‘Follows the Money,’ But Only in Direction of Death Tax Opponents

There's little point in “following the money” if you only follow it in one direction. And too often, journalists only follow the money to the right, leaving shady financial dealings from the left unexposed. That's exactly what Bloomberg News reporter Ryan Donmoyer did in a recent article on the death tax provisions of President Obama's tax deal with congressional Republicans. As the Washington Examiner's Tim Carney noticed , Donmoyer dutifully noted the indirect financial stake in the death tax debate of a conservative group that opposes the tax, but ignored a similar conflict on the parts of some of the tax's proponents. read more
